DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of cold
callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong with the
service, or product, they may prove difficult to trace. Some traders will quote a
price but then ask for substantially more money when the job has been
completed. Some work can be carried out and completed to a poor, or even unsafe standard. Some cold
callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity. Police are asking for residents to be
vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any suspicious persons or activity
to them as soon as possible. They are also asking for residents to pass this information on to older, or
more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted. Reputable, local traders can be found via North
Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With Confidence’ Scheme https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
There have been reports of cold callers in the Northop area last weekend. A smartly dressed male went to a
property and apologised ‘for the noise’ claiming they had been carrying out work next door. The caller
claimed that they had noticed that the resident needed work doing on their chimney and guttering, whilst
they had been working at the neighbouring property. The resident hadn't heard any work being carried out
and asked how much would the work cost. They replied it would be three hundred pounds. The resident
stated they didn't have that amount of money in the house. The cold caller offered to take the resident to
the bank. Please see advice as above.
TELEPHONE COLD CALLERS
A business (convenience store/garage) has received a telephone call on their landline relating to a mobile
phone recently. The caller was stating that the mobile phone needed to be topped up. Thankfully, no details
were provided by the business. The caller said they would make contact again, which they have not done, to
date. It is thought that this was possibly an attempt to obtain card/bank details. This serves as a useful
reminder not to provide details to a telephone cold caller.
Residents continue to report having received telephone calls claiming to be from their internet service
provider, claiming that the internet was being cut off within the next 24/48 hours. Another resident is
receiving numerous telephone calls a day, threatening to turn off the internet
As a reminder, this is an attempt to gain remote access to your computer to steal from
you.
