OWL Cymru 19100448037— Distraction Burglary in Llay
Police are appealing for information following a distraction burglary in the First Avenue area of Llay
recently. The incident occurred at around 14.30 hrs on 12th August.
The resident answered the door to a male who stated that the pointing on the chimney needed attention.
He said he had carried out work on the neighbours property and had noticed it while he was up there. The
resident allowed the male to get a ladder set up with two other males. After around 10 minutes one male
asked the residents husband to go and look at the work, the other male wanted to see the coving and to
check there were no leaks. He then asked the resident to turn the thermostat up and turn the cold water
tap on in the kitchen. The resident went downstairs and did as requested. The male then came downstairs
and said everything was fine. The resident then paid over two hundred pounds for the ‘work’ they had
carried out, and waited for a receipt. When they didn't return with a receipt the resident went outside and
found the van had gone. The resident then checked with the neighbour and discovered that they had NOT
had any work carried out. The resident then checked upstairs and found that an amount of money had been
taken and a cash tin.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of cold
callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong with the service, or product, they may
prove difficult to trace.
Some traders will quote a price but then ask for substantially more money when the job has been
completed. Some work can be carried out and completed to a poor, or even unsafe standard. Some cold
callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity, as in this incident. Police are asking for
residents to be vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any suspicious
persons or activity to them as soon as possible. They are also asking for residents to pass this information
on to older, or more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted. Reputable, local traders can be
Public warned over 'Safe Account' scams
North Wales Police are warning the public to be alert to ‘safe account’ scams after an increase in reports
from members of the public. Residents have reported receiving phone calls from scammers claiming to be
calling from their bank, or police fraud investigators. The caller will state that there is an issue with the
victims bank account and advise them to move their money to a ‘safe account’. The victim will often be told
that bank staff are suspected of being involved in a fraud which deters the public from seeking advice in
their local branch. In some cases victims have been played an automated message stating £600 had been
taken from their account and requesting the victims press ‘1’ to continue.
Police have issued the following advice to residents.
If you receive a telephone call from ANYONE asking you to move your money into a different account
END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY.
DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL DETAILS, including banking details, to anyone you do not know either in the
street, on the doorstep, over the telephone or internet as these details can be used to steal your
identity.
Beware of cold calls even when the caller appears to have personal information such as your address,
date of birth or bank account details.
Your bank and the police will NEVER ask you to transfer your money into a ‘safe account’.
If you receive unexpected contact from persons claiming to be from your bank take time to think. DO
NOT BE RUSHED. If you have concerns about your money wait 10 minutes and call your bank on a
trusted number to check the validity of the call.
DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of cold
callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong with the
service, or product, they may prove difficult to trace. Some traders will quote a
price but then ask for substantially more money when the job has been
completed. Some work can be carried out and completed to a poor, or even unsafe standard. Some cold
callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity. Police are asking for residents to be
vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any suspicious persons or activity
to them as soon as possible. They are also asking for residents to pass this information on to older, or
more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted. Reputable, local traders can be found via North
Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With Confidence’ Scheme https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
There have been reports of cold callers in the Northop area last weekend. A smartly dressed male went to a
property and apologised ‘for the noise’ claiming they had been carrying out work next door. The caller
claimed that they had noticed that the resident needed work doing on their chimney and guttering, whilst
they had been working at the neighbouring property. The resident hadn't heard any work being carried out
and asked how much would the work cost. They replied it would be three hundred pounds. The resident
stated they didn't have that amount of money in the house. The cold caller offered to take the resident to
the bank. Please see advice as above.
TELEPHONE COLD CALLERS
A business (convenience store/garage) has received a telephone call on their landline relating to a mobile
phone recently. The caller was stating that the mobile phone needed to be topped up. Thankfully, no details
were provided by the business. The caller said they would make contact again, which they have not done, to
date. It is thought that this was possibly an attempt to obtain card/bank details. This serves as a useful
reminder not to provide details to a telephone cold caller.
Residents continue to report having received telephone calls claiming to be from their internet service
provider, claiming that the internet was being cut off within the next 24/48 hours. Another resident is
receiving numerous telephone calls a day, threatening to turn off the internet
As a reminder, this is an attempt to gain remote access to your computer to steal from
you.
