Greenpark B downed Southbridge A 51-44 at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday, making them the first team to confirm a semi-final spot with two games to go in round three. Broadfield A also won their grand-final rematch against Greenpark A by the surprisingly high margin of 26. The 66-40 triumph gave Broadfield A a strong chance of finishing in top spot if they can maintain their form. Lincoln A were able to keep their semi-final chances alive with a 59-46 win over Prebbleton A. Greenpark B player/coach Mechelle Barltrop said her team made hard work of the win, only leading by two goals heading into the fourth quarter before eventually pulling away. “Southbridge came to make it hard for us and they certainly managed that,” she said. “We battled to build a lead. Every time we’d get ahead by a few we’d get pulled back in. “It was good that we held on to a tight lead because often we’d lose it when in that position.” Barltrop praised the return of Leah Zygmont, who provided a strong option in the shooting circle and cover for players nursing injuries. Southbridge coach Sarah Ormandy was disappointed to let a winnable game slip away and not pick up a bonus point for losing within five goals. Broadfield A coach Yvonne Crichton-Hill said she was delighted with her team’s progression after they raced out to a 14-goal first quarter advantage and never looked back against defending champions Greenpark A. The 20-6 advantage proved too much for an out-of-sorts Greenpark A and they never recovered. Broadfield A shooter Maia Hill will be one to watch if her Yvonne Crichton-Hill team makes the semi-finals next month. “We are just trying to be better each week,” Crichton-Hill said. “The whole team stood out and impressed me.” Greenpark A coach Zaylie Sullivan said her team were well below their best. “When one of us goes off the boil, we all have a bad game,” she said. “Our first five goal attempts didn’t even touch the hoop.” Lincoln A coach Dawn Dalley said her team did what they needed to do to keep their season alive. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday August 21 2019 15 Darfield set for surprise return to top division • By Jacob Page DARFIELD PRESIDENT Dave Beatty was shocked to find out his team have been reinstated to the Canterbury Country premier cricket competition. The decision to include them was made last week after Kaiapoi were forced to withdraw from the competition – which starts in October – due to a lack of numbers Darfield finished at the bottom of the table last year and were relegated from the eight-team premier grade. They unsuccessfully tried to overturn their demotion Dave Beatty in June. But after Kaiapoi’s annual meeting on August 12, the club told the Canterbury Country Cricket Association it would not be in a position to enter a premier team in the 2019/20 season. “I was quite shocked to get the news that we were back,” Beatty said. “After we missed out trying to make it a nine-team competition in June, I’d pretty much got over it.” Darfield reformed last season after a seven-year absence. Beatty said while he accepted the promotion/relegation rules, he felt his team were unlucky to end up the cellardwellers of the competition. “We had four or five rained out games and a couple of tight losses, so it was not an ideal situation. PHOTO: KAREN CASEY go down and try to get us back to the top grade. “After Christmas, we’ll have New Zealand age-group rep Jesse Frew available and two or three players who play first XI cricket in town.” Beatty said the club’s close relationship with Kirwee, Sheffield, Malvern and Greendale means there is now a pathway into premier cricket for players from those areas. Lincoln have earned promotion to the premier grade after they won the secondtier senior competition. There will now be four Ellesmere teams – Darfield, Lincoln, Weedons and Leeston-Southbridge – in the premier competition when the season starts on October 5. Cheviot, Southbrook, Sefton and Oxford will also play in the competition.
