It was one of several performances Margot made with Sky Dogs at the annual animal party known as Wag! Fest, which took place on Aug. 17 at Prairie Oaks Metro Park. Emma is a 4-monthold kitten. She was born to a feral mother and has spent time in a foster home learning to trust humans. She is a little shy at fist but once she feels comfortable with you, she will demand attention. www.columbusmessenger.com SOUTHWEST MESSENGER - August 25, 2019 - PAGE 15 As someone with a limited interest in Bruce Springsteen, I had no pressing desire to see “Blinded by the Light,” a film often referred to as an ode to the music and power of ‘The Boss. I do not dislike the man nor am I diminishing his talent, but the prospect of sitting through a two-hour movie dominated by his music did not whip me into a frenzy. As I sat in the theater before the show began, listening to someone singing a Springsteen song, I told myself it wouldn’t be that bad, that it had other positive attributes such as being co-written and directed by Gurinder Chadha (of “Bend it Like Beckham” fame) and having a plot revolving around the experiences of a first and second generation immigrant family. And you know what? It wasn’t bad. It was great. The film, loosely based on the memoir ‘Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll’ by journalist Sarfraz Manzoor, takes place in the 1980s where work shortages, economic hardships and In Entertainment e Boss brings light and power to the big screen The Reel Deal - By Dedra Cordle white nationalist groups reign supreme in the UK. Feeling the weight in this triangle of awful is Javed Khan (Viveik Kalra), a British-Pakistani teen who longs to leave his hometown of Luton and become a writer who makes a difference. His is a dream unexpressed as he knows his more traditional parents will not be supportive. To escape from high familial expectations and the sting of insults from strangers, Javed sinks into the world of poetry and songwriting, finding an escape in his original words even though he has no confidence in their worth. While walking and daydreaming in the halls at school, Javed runs into a fellow student named Roops (Aaron Phagura) who is upset at the potential damage to a beloved cassette tape. When Javed asks him who the musician is, the teen replies that it is “The Boss of us all,” which leaves him dumbfounded. The following day at lunch, Roops slides two cassette tapes over to Javed, both by the artist Bruce Springsteen. He tells Javed that Bruce is a “direct line to all that is true” and bequeaths his prized possessions to his new friend. At first, Javed has no interest in listening to this Bruce fellow, but when he gets into an argument with his father (Kulvinder Ghir) and throws out all of his poems, he slips on some head phones, pops in the tape and presses play. When he hears ‘Dancing in the Dark,’ and then ‘The Promised Land,’ his mind transforms, bringing to life the lyrics on screen as they percolate in his brain. It was like Bruce was singing directly to him when he sang of wanting change and feeling so weak that he just wants to explode. These scenes could have come across as cheesy but they are shot and acted so earnestly that it was touching. With a message about the transformative power of music, “Blinded by the Light” toes the line between endearing and cloying though it never strays completely into the latter; it just skims the surface from time to time. What brings this film back, however, is the emotional core of Javed and his father and the push and pull they have between tradition and modernity. I did not expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did. The acting, especially by newcomer Kalra, is top notch and the secondary character have decent, albeit slightly underdeveloped arcs too. But what really makes this film is its connectivity with Springsteen’s music, particularly those of the classic masters. It taps into those times of uncertainty, anger, hope, love and all those emotions that music can express: though cheesy, it really is an ode to the power of music, especially that of Springsteen’s.
