A quick look reveals that the puzzle is a 9-by-9 grid of squares divided into nine 3- by-3 square blocks, with some of the squares filled in for you. The object is to fill in the blank squares in such a way that each of the numbers 1 to 9 appears exactly once in each row, column, and block. One of the bands that was mentioned in that piece was Boston. I had not known until recently that when that band was signed to Epic records in 1975 that there wasn’t even a band at all. The guitarist Tom Scholz and original singer Brad Delp were the only two that signed the deal. In a PBS television show “Nova” the-secret-life-of-scientists-and-engineers-there is an in depth interview with Scholz. He is an MIT-trained engineer and inventor. He explained that had done most all the recording of the tracks that record executives had listened to in the demos on the first Boston album. The record company was unaware that what they had heard was almost all performed by Scholz. They wanted the band to re-record the demos but Scholz convinced them that it would have to be done on the equipment that he had in his basement in order to get the correct sound. He had invented a lot of the equipment that was used himself. It was all analog, this was before digital came along. The record company requested that the finished tapes be sent to California to be mixed and for a live performance, so Scholz had to gather musicians to perform for the executives. Only one song was recorded by the group which does have a different sound than the rest of the album. The record producer was in on the secret and worked with Scholz on having the final mix done in California. Brad Delp added vocals in California and the band was named Boston at that time. When Scholz made it big as a musician, he was still working as an engineer. Scholz stated that his father asked him why he was wasting time with the engineering, that he should be putting a new album together. He eventually started an electronics company selling pocket sized guitar amps “The Rockman” that had the unique sound that he had created. This also turned out to be a very successful venture. Scholz said then his father didn’t know what to tell him.
