Back in the day, (oh here we go,

another back in the day story) when

we had a Christmas Stocking, it had

a banana, orange, an apple, a bag

of mixed nuts (still in the shell),

maybe a bag of the hard Christmas

candy, and sometimes I got a small

bag of chocolate covered peanuts.

They were a favorite of mine growing

up. The first Christmas tree I

remember was an aluminum one that

had the color wheel spotlight that

spun with 4 different colors. My

parents allowed my 5th grade

class to use that tree as it wasn’t

allowed for classrooms to use a

tree with corded lights on it. I

guess the school was afraid of a

fire starting. Ironically, the furnace

at school had caught the 3 fifth

grade classrooms on fire one night

so we were allowed to use a building

that belonged to the Catholic

Church just across the street from

the school for the rest of the fifth

grade school year. I think about all

the Christmas stuff that is out now,

and how back then for window

“clings” my sister colored, cut out,

and taped Santa & the reindeer to

the window.

• Although John David Marks was

a Jewish songwriter, he specialized

in Christmas songs and wrote many

(Brenda Lee), "A Holly Jolly

• President Theodore Roosevelt

was a bit of a scrooge when it came

to Christmas trees. As a conservationist

he banned Christmas trees

in the White House. Some say his

kids would sneak Christmas trees

into their rooms, against his wishes.

• Germany made the first artificial

Christmas Plum

Desserts Without

The Plum?

Christmas Pudding has its

origins in medieval England,

and is sometimes

known as plum pudding or

just "pud", though this can

also refer to other kinds of

boiled pudding involving

dried fruit. Despite the

name "plum pudding", the

pudding contains no actual

plums due to the pre-Victorian

use of the word

"plums" as a term for raisins.

In the same vein as plumless

plum pudding, plum

pies which are known

throughout Britain today

as mince pies, (also

known as Christmas pies -

Little Jack Horner, Sat in

a corner, eating a Christmas

Pie, He stuck in his

thumb, and pulled out a

plum), no longer contain

dried prunes or indeed

mince, but instead are

filled with a mixture of

dried fruits and spices...

Mincemeat originally

meant simply 'grinded or

chopped meat', so the

Christmas mince pie was

savoury, much like a meat

pot pie, rather than a sweet

pie.

Sugar plums -The term

dates to 1626 to describe "a

small candy in the shape of

a ball or disk." ... The famous

sugar plums spoken

about in Clement Clark

Moore's beloved poem,

"'Twas the Night Before

Christmas" were actually

sugar-coated coriander.

Later the recipe changed

and included other spices

and dried fruit.

See our recipe for Sugar

Plums using Maraschino

Cherries on page 18.

It is time to repent and pray. It

is time to fight through to the

finish on our knees. There will

be no revival until we fast and

pray. It is not great preaching,

but great praying that will

bring down the power that we

so desperately need. Only the

spirit of prayer will drive out

the spirit of the world. We

must return to Christ before

the return of Christ. The

power of God is available for

the people of God. Let us pay

the price and appropriate

God’s promised power today.

Numbers of professing

Christians have increased,

fleshly activities have been

The Temptation

(1) Make Bread

(2) Dare God to rescue you

based on misapplied scripture

Psalm 91:11-12 11 For he shall

give his angels charge over

thee, to keep thee in all thy

ways. 12 They shall bear thee

up in their hands, lest thou

dash thy foot against a stone.

(3) Worship Satan (Satan said

worship me) Real needs used

as a basis for temptation.

(1) Physical need - Hunger.

(2) Emotional need - Security.

(3) Psychological need -

Significance.Power,

Achievement,Possible Doubts

that make the temptations real.

(1) Would God provide food?

(2) Would God protect?

(3)Would God rule?

Potential weakness Satan

multiplied, but spiritual power

has waned. Why? Because there

is a grieved and quenched Holy

Spirit in our midst. While His

blessing is withheld there can be

no improvement.

WHAT IS NEEDED TODAY

IS FOR THE SAINTS TO GET

DOWN ON THEIR FACES

BEFORE GOD, CRY UNTO

HIM IN THE NAME OF

CHRIST TO SO WORK

AGAIN, THAT WHAT HAS

GRIEVED HIS SPIRIT MAY

BE PUT AWAY, AND THE

CHANNEL OF BLESSING

ONCE MORE BE OPENED.

Until the Holy Spirit is again

given His rightful place in our

sought to exploit.

(1) Hunger Impatience need to

“Prove his sonship” (2) Pride/

Insecurity need to test God. (3)

Desire for quick power, easy

solutions, need to prove equality

with God.

Jesus Answer

(1) Deuteronomy 8:3 And he

humbled thee, and suffered

thee to hunger, and fed thee

with manna, which thou

knewest not, neither did thy

fathers know; that he might

make thee know that man doth

not live by bread only, but by

every word that proceedeth out

of the mouth of the LORD doth

man live.

(Don’t test God - Focus: God’s

Plan. “Depend on God” Focus:

God’s purpose.

(2) Deuteronomy 6:16 Ye shall

hearts, thoughts, and activities,

there can be no improvement.

Until it be recognized that we

are entirely dependent upon His

operations for all spiritual

blessing, the root of the trouble

cannot be reached. Until it be

recognized that it is “Not by

might, (of trained workers), nor

by power (of intellectual

argument or persuasive appeal),

but by MY SPIRIT, saith the

Lord” (Zech. 4:6) there will be

no deliverance from the fleshly

zeal which is not according to

knowledge, and which is now

paralyzing Christendom. Until

the Holy Spirit is honored,

sought, and counted upon, the

present spiritual drought must

continue.

“That your faith should

not stand in the wisdom

of men, but in the power

of God”

I Cor.2:5

Dr. William F. Holland Jr.

LIVING ON PURPOSE

EVERYBODY IS SERVING SOMEBODY

One of the greatest mysteries

and deceptions of life is not

realizing that our will is very

sneaky. Humans believe they

control themselves but actually,

they are being controlled.

When we hear about there being

room for only one throne

in everyone’s heart, most of

the time this statement goes in

one ear and out the other.

Why? Because this truth is so

powerful that the human

“will” realizes how this revelation

can destroy its stronghold

to control an individual. The

natural human attitude is so

manipulative that only a remnant

will comprehend they are

in a war with their own fallen

nature. When a person makes

the decision to invite Christ to

govern their life, the will is

defeated and must submit to

the Lordship of Jesus. This

life-changing miracle opens

the door for the mind to be re-

newed and transformed

which allows us to sincerely

walk in the presence and

power of the Holy Spirit.

Two kings CANNOT rule

the same kingdom. Romans

chapter 6 is one of those

chapters the human will

tries to avoid at all cost. No

matter how many games we

play, we can never escape

the responsibility of being

accountable. We are never

doing it “our way” no matter

how rebellious Frank

Sinatra thought he was.

Verse 16 blows the trumpet

loud and clear warning us of

our foolishness, “Do you

not comprehend that if you

present yourselves to anyone

as obedient slaves, you

become a slave of the one

you obey, either of sin which

leads to death, or of obedience

which leads to righteousness?”

not tempt the LORD your God,

as ye tempted him in Massah.

(3) Deuteronomy 6:13 Thou

shalt fear the LORD thy God,

and serve him, and shalt swear

by his name. “No compromise

with evil” Focus God’s Person.

As if going through a final test

of preparation, Jesus was

tempted of Satan in the wilderness.

Matthew 4:10 Then saith

Jesus unto him, Get thee

hence, Satan: for it is written,

Thou shalt worship the Lord

thy God, and him only shalt

thou serve.

Three specific parts of the

temptations are visited by St.

Matthew.

Jesus demonstrates both the

importance and effectiveness

of knowing and applying

scripture to combat temptation.

Satan offered all the

world to Jesus if he would

kneel and worship him. Today

Satan offers us all the world

by trying to entice us with

materialism and power. We

can resist temptation the same

way Jesus did if you find yourself

craving something that the

world offers, quote Jesus’

words to Satan, thou shalt worship

the Lord thy God, and him

only shalt thou serve. God

bless you all until next month

when we will be writing about

And while they were there,

the time came for her baby to

be born. She gave birth to her

first child, a son. She wrapped

him snugly in strips of cloth and

laid him in a manger, because

there was no lodging available

for them.

That night there were

shepherds staying in the fields

nearby, guarding their flocks

of sheep. Suddenly, an angel

of the Lord appeared among

them, and the radiance of the

Lord’s glory surrounded them.

They were terrified, but the

angel reassured them. “Don’t

be afraid!” he said. “I bring

you good news that will bring

great joy to all people. The

Savior-yes, the Messiah, the

Lord-has been born today in

Bethlehem, the city of David!

And you will recognize him by

this sign: You will find a baby

wrapped snugly in strips of

cloth, lying in a manger.”

Suddenly, the angel was

joined by a vast host of othersthe

armies of heaven-praising

God and saying,

“Glory to God in highest

heaven, and peace on earth to

those with whom God is

pleased.”

When the angels had

returned to heaven, the

shepherds said to each other,

“Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s

see this thing that has

happened, which the Lord has

told us about.”

They hurried to the village

and found Mary and Joseph.

And there was the baby, lying

in the manger.

BIBLE TRIVA ANSWERS

NOTE: What is a “Holy Kiss?”

The kiss of peace is an ancient traditional

Christian greeting, sometimes

also called the "holy kiss",

"brother kiss" (among men), or

"sister kiss" (among women).

Such greetings signify a wish and

blessing that peace be with the

recipient, and besides their spontaneous

uses they have certain

ritualized or formalized uses long

established in liturgy. Many denominations

use other forms of

greeting (besides literal kisses) to

serve equivalent purposes; they

include handshakes, gestures,

and hugs, any of which may be

called a sign of peace.

Godfather of Hair

As a young man in Chicago, Jheri

Redding, an Illinois farm boy, was

teaching chemistry and working as

a hair stylist using beauty products

that did not perform to his expectations.

He began experimenting with

chemicals and other ingredients he

found in his kitchen, such as mayonnaise

and vinegar, to make his

own shampoos, rinses and hairdressing

solutions to improve the

hair of his clients. From his research

grew the treatments, styling creams

and gels that became known as

Jheri Redding Products.

Redding eventually founded four

hair-care products companies, revolutionized

the economics of the hair

salon industry and changed the way

much larger companies market

shampoos. Mr. Redding was a

founder of Jheri Redding Products

in 1956, Redken in 1960, Jhirmack

in 1968 and Nexxus Products in

1979. The Jheri curl is a permanent

wave hairstyle that was popular

among African Americans during

the 1980s and was invented by

Redding.

Hard Times

Mr. Redding was the first to make

"ph-balanced" shampoos that

match the mild acidity of human

skin, to put vitamins in hair-care

products and to market added minerals,

pitching their supposed benefits

with evangelistic fervor at conventions.

Before Mr. Redding came

along, hair salons sold few if any

products to customers.

Redding was born in Rantoul, Ill.,

the son of Irish immigrant farmers,

in 1907. He became one of the first

men licensed in Illinois as a cosmetologist

because during the Depression

he saw that hairdressers

made more money than farmers and

many other people.

Redding also raced Thoroughbred

horses under the Jhayare Stables

name. Rhedding died in 1998.
