From
The
Editor
Tom Tyler
I think about why I listen to some
of the music I listen to and what
influenced me... Thinking of when I
was young and I used to sit in my
dad’s car and listen to 8 tracks of
The Statler Brothers, Hank Snow,
Fats Domino and Johnny Cash. My
dad had told me once that when he
was younger, he had heard that Fats
Domino was at Renfro Valley, (don’t
know if he was performing or passing
through) but my dad said he
got there only in time to see him
Answer on page 22.
leaving in the back of a Cadillac. I
think about songs my dad played
on his guitar often on the porch. I
can remember the songs my uncle
and sister played on their record
players, and my uncle had me singing
on a portable reel to reel when I
still had “baby talk.” I still have that
recording. I had gotten a ukulele
when I was young and learned
chords from a “Mel Bay” chord
book and could play it pretty well
and then I must have lost interest.
I don’t remember what even happened
to that ukulele. I remember
Charlie Napier as a 5th grade
teacher, entertaining us with his
guitar playing when we had time.
The rules are simple. A quick look reveals that the
puzzle is a 9-by-9 grid of squares divided into nine 3-
by-3 square blocks, with some of the squares filled
in for you. The object is to fill in the blank squares in
such a way that each of the numbers 1 to 9 appears
exactly once in each row, column, and block.
If the puzzle has been constructed properly, there
should be only one way to complete the diagram
within the rules of the game.
Thank you Charlie. As a teen I
picked up a guitar and learned
chords again from a “Mel Bay”
book. I remember playing guitar on
Roundstone teacher Harry
Holland’s porch as a teen. Although
we knew almost everyone
on our street, I don’t know how we
had started playing together, I
guess I was riding my bike and saw
him playing on the porch and struck
up a conversation? Doesn’t sound
like me at the time because I was
terribly shy and quite as a kid. In
high school I took guitar class
which taught me about the notes,
root notes, keys etc. Thank You
Mrs. Margie Wilcop. My dad got
my first electric guitar for me, but
before I could drive, I bought a
Stratocaster copy (a Global brand)
which I paid for by laying it away
and paying $5 or $10 at a time. I still
have that guitar. Later I was in a
start up band and someone I knew
from school, Marvin Bowling was
playing barre chords which I had
not discovered yet, (he had went
to California, I guess to seek his fortune?
I thought at the time he
learned cool guitar stuff there). I
then think about the English teacher
that played The Beatle’s Eleanor
Rigby to get the class to think about
the lyrics. Mrs Young? Mrs. Allen?
I can’t remember which. Then there
was Mrs. Betty Jo McKinney that
taught English, but also started a
creative writing club. I learned in
that club how to arrange words or
• “I like the cut of your jib”, refers
to one's general appearance
or personality. In the 17th century
the shape of the front-most
jib sail often identified a vessel's
nationality, and hence whether it
was hostile or friendly. The term
was being used figuratively by
the early 1800s, often to express
like or dislike for someone.
The Worlds Fair
What happened to the World’s
Fair? How did the global cultural
events that inaugurated broadcast
television (New York 1939),
built the Eiffel Tower (Paris
1889), and introduced the world
to the Ferris Wheel (Chicago
1893) disappear?
Actually, they haven’t: World’s
Fairs haven’t gone anywhere, it’s
just America that has moved on.
The next World’s Fair is scheduled
for 2020 in Dubai, United
Arab Emirates, but expo-goers
who are looking to catch the latest
glimpse at the “world of tomorrow,”
will be disappointed.
“A lot of Americans imagine
World’s Fairs as they were in
the 1930s and the 1960s, but the
medium has changed. Whereas
the focus was on progress or the
space age and things like that at
one time, the themes tend to be
more environmental now.
But while the U.S hasn’t
hosted a Fair in decades, it’s still
participating in them. And U.S.
cities are already bidding to host
ones much further out. Minneapolis
is looking to host the
Worlds Fair in 2023, San Francisco
and Houston are looking
at 2025, so we may soon see a
World’s Fair in North America.
To avoid slipping from “the
world of tomorrow” to “the
world of the past,” the new U.S.
Fairs will have to harken back
to the old New York Fairs’ sense
of wonder and aspiration.
We need power.
Correct creed is no substitute
for spiritual power. “Be filled
with the Spirit” is an urgent
command.
Lukewarm, lifeless orthodoxy
will never do. As we
appropriate God’s promised
power, we can become
powerful preachers of our
powerful Gospel. It is sad to see
so many powerless preachers
standing in the pulpit.
Christianity is vitality. There is
no need for timid, tongue-tied
Christians. The fire of the Holy
Ghost makes us bold, flaming
witnesses.
The book of Acts was a
pageantry of power. It is a
Bible Persecutions #4
Elijah
(1) The Persecuted - Elijah
(2) The Persecutors - Ahab and
Jezebel
(3) Why The Persecution - Elijah
Confronted Their Sins
(4) Result - Elijah Had To Flee
For His Life.
Reference - I Kings 19:1-8 1 And
Ahab told Jezebel all that
Elijah had done, and withal
how he had slain all the
prophets with the sword.
2
Then Jezebel sent a messenger
unto Elijah, saying, So let
the gods do to me, and more
also, if I make not thy life as
the life of one of them by to
morrow about this time.
3
And when he saw that, he
arose, and went for his life,
and came to Beersheba, which
belongeth to Judah, and left
his servant there.
divine blueprint to be followed
today. The power of Pentecost
has not been exhausted. The
purpose of Pentecost has not
changed. There is no substitute
for soul-winning power.
Formalism can never take the
place of fire. The incoming and
empowering of the Holy Spirit
is still necessary for the outgoing
of the Gospel and the ingathering
of souls.
It is not enough to own Christ
as Saviour. We must obey Him
as Lord. Christ is more than a
figurehead to be supported. He
is a Lord to be worshipped and
served. Too many call Him,
“Lord, Lord,” but do not the
4
But he himself went a day's
journey into the wilderness,
and came and sat down under
a juniper tree: and he requested
for himself that he
might die; and said, It is
enough; now, O LORD, take
away my life; for I am not better
than my fathers.
5
And as he lay and slept under
a juniper tree, behold,
then an angel touched him,
and said unto him, Arise and
eat.
6
And he looked, and, behold,
there was a cake baken on the
coals, and a cruse of water at
his head. And he did eat and
drink, and laid him down
again.
7
And the angel of the LORD
came again the second time,
and touched him, and said,
Arise and eat; because the
journey is too great for thee.
things which He says.
We are living in the
Loadicean age and in a
lukewarm atmosphere. Many
worship the god of
convenience, rather than the
God of the Bible. Today Jesus
has little authority over those
who call themselves by His
Name. Saving faith should
include repentance and
surrender.
The only time many people
go to Christ is when they are
in trouble. They treat him like
we do a lawyer. We seek his
help, but not his interference.
We accept the benefits of the
Gospel without assuming any
of the responsibilities of the
Gospel. We must return to our
victorious Lord and realize
afresh the vigor and vitality of
His Gospel. The mighty God
of the early church must be
our God today.
8
And he arose, and did eat and
drink, and went in the strength
of that meat forty days and
forty nights unto Horeb the
mount of God.
God Speaks to Elijah in I Kings
19:9-18 In Verse 11-12.. 11 And he
said, Go forth, and stand upon
the mount before the LORD.
And, behold, the LORD passed
by, and a great and strong wind
rent the mountains, and brake
in pieces the rocks before the
LORD; but the LORD was not
in the wind: and after the wind
an earthquake; but the LORD
was not in the earthquake: 12
And after the earthquake a fire;
but the LORD was not in the
fire: and after the fire a still
small voice.
Elijah knew that the still small
voice was God’s. He realized that
God doesn’t reveal himself only
in powerful miraculous ways. To
Dr. William F. Holland Jr.
LIVING ON PURPOSE
LAYING DOWN OUR OLD WILL
Our will and carnal nature is
directly associated with our old
lost way of thinking. However,
when our minds have been renewed
in Christ, our will must
take its rightful place in submission
to Jesus. We can demand,
confess, and command
all we want, but until this
structure of divine order has
been established within us, this
spiritual process will not function
properly. This basic principal
is the heart of the Christian
life but sadly many
churches are avoiding to teach
it. If a church is not instructing
the people about this revelation,
they are actually hurting
and hindering the advancement
of God’s people.
Where is the seeking out our
own salvation with fear and
trembling? All the rituals, programs,
and traditions that have
become a comfortable part of
our church experiences will
only amount to a comfortable
social gathering unless we embrace
the revelation of yielding
our will. We are reminded
how strong this religious spirit
can be because we saw a
glimpse of it when Jesus personally
came against it. Remember,
the people cried give
us Barabbas and our will is
constantly crying the same
thing. Our depraved nature is
a rebellious and defiant baby
that demands and dares anything
or anyone (including God)
to disrupt its pleasures and desires.
Very few individuals including
most of the religious
world have ever made the decision
to fight and resist this
deceptive bondage. When the
“will” controls the person there
is NO way that Jesus can rule
and control the heart as Lord.
“There’s no shortage of
writings on the subject of
leadership,” said the author of
an article in a business
magazine. Perhaps it is because
we are facing so much
economic and financial
insecurity. Everyone is looking
for a way to reorganize their
Facing the rapid rate of change
in world markets is causing
uncertainty and fear and people
don’t know what to believe.”
“People need something that
will give them safety and
answer their questions about
what is going to happen next,”
said a professor of economics.
“Leaders and managers are
looking for the ‘silver bullet’ to
solve their problems, but there
is none available,” said a
was talking about.
and a parent, he had discovered
The Missing Plague
Between the first modern Europeans
arriving in 1492 and the Victorian
age, the indigenous population
of the new world dropped by at least
90%.
The cause?
Not the conquistadores and company
-- they killed lots of people
but their death count is nothing
compared to what they brought
with them: small pox, typhus, tuberculosis,
influenza, bubonic plague,
cholera, mumps, measles and more
leapt from those first explorers to
the costal tribes, then onward the
microscopic invaders spread
through a hemisphere of people
with no defenses against them. Tens
of millions died.
These germs decided the fate of
these battles long before the fighting
started.
Why didn't Europeans get sick?
If new-worlders were vulnerable
to old-world diseases, then surely
old-worlders would be vulnerable
to new world diseases.
Yet, there were no diseases spreading
eastward infecting Europe and
cutting the population from 90 million
to 9. If the Americans disease
had existed it would have rather
dampened European ability for
transatlantic expansion.
To answer why this didn't happen:
we need first to distinguish regular
diseases -- like the common cold --
from what we'll call plagues.
Plagues ..1) Spread quickly between
people. Sneezes spread
plagues faster than handshakes
which are faster than… closeness.
(Plagues use spreading “by
sneezes” faster than “by sex”.)
2) They kill you quickly or you become
immune. Catch a plague and
your dead within seven to thirty
days. Survive and you'll never get
it again. Your body has learned to
fight it, you might still carry it -- the
plague lives in you, you can still
spread it, but it can't hurt you.
The surface answer to this question
isn't that Europeans had better
immune systems to fight off new
world plages -- it's that new world
didn't have plagues for them to
catch. They had regular diseases
but there was no plague to carry.
History's biggest killers all come
from the old world.
But why?
Let's talk Cholera, a plague that
spreads if your civilization does a
bad job of separating drinking water
from pooping water. London
was terrible at this, making it the
cholera capital of the world. Cholera
can rip through dense neighborhoods
killing swaths of the
population, before moving onward.
But that's the key: it has to
move on.
In a small, isolated group, a
plague like cholera cannot survive
-- it kills all available victims, leaving
only the immune and then
there’s nowhere to go -- it's a fire
that burns through its fuel.
But a city to which rural migrants
flock, where hundreds of babies
are born a day: this is sanctuary
for the fire of plague; fresh kindling
comes to it. The plague
flares and smolders and flares and
smolders again -- impossible to extinguish.
Historically in city borders
plagues killed faster than people
could breed. Cities grew because
more people moved to them than
died inside of them. Cities only
started growing from their own
population in the 1900s when
medicine finally left its leaches
and bloodletting phase and entered
its soap and soup phase --
giving humans some tools to slow
death.
But before that a city was an unintentional
playground for
plagues and a grim machine to
sort the immune from the rest.
So The New World didn't have
plagues because the new world
didn't have big, dense, terribly
sanitized deeply interconnected
cities for plages to thrive.
OK, but The New World wasn't
completely barren of cities. And
tribes weren't completely isolated,
otherwise the newly-arrived
smallpox in the 1400s couldn't
have spread.
Cities are only part of the puzzle:
THE BANNER OCTOBER 1, 2019
21
they're required for plagues, but cities
don't make the germs that start
the plagues -- those germs come
from the missing piece.
Now, most germs don't want to kill
you for the same reason you don't
want to burn down your house:
germs live in you. Chronic diseases
like leprosy are terrible because
they're very good at not killing you.
Plague lethality is an accident, a
misunderstanding, because the
germs that cause them don't know
they're in humans, they're germs
that think they're in animals.
Plagues come from animals.
Whooping cough comes from
pigs, as does flu, as well as from
birds. Our friend the cow alone is
responsible for measles, tuberculosis,
and smallpox.
For the cow these diseases are no
big deal -- like colds for us. But
when cow germs get in humans,
things they do to make the cow a
little sick, makes humans very sick.
Deadly sick.
Germs jumping species like this is
extraordinarily rare. That's why generations
of humans can spend time
around animals just fine. Being the
first person to get a new animal-tohuman
plague is winning a terrible
lottery.
But a colonial-age city raises the
odds: there used to be animals everywhere,
horses, herds of livestock
in the streets, open slaughterhouses,
meat markets pre-refrigeration,
and a river of literal human
and animal excrement running
through it all.
A more perfect environment for
diseases to jump species could
hardly be imagined.
So plagues come from animals, but
so rarely you have as many
chances for infection and give the
newborn plague a fertile environment
to grow as the old world. They
had the necessary pieces in abundance.
But, why was a city like London
filled with sheep and pigs and cows
and Tenochtitlan wasn't?
This brings us to the final level.
Some animals can be put to human
use -- this is what domestica-
tion means, animals you can breed,
not just hunt.
Forget at the moment the modern
world: go back to 10,000BC when
tribes of humans reached just
about everywhere. If you were in
one of these tribes what local animals
could you capture, alive, and
successfully pen to breed?
Maybe you're in North Dakota
and thinking about catching a Buffalo:
an unpredictable, violent tank
on hooves, that can outrun you
across the planes, leap over your
head and travels in herds thousands
strong. Oh, and you have
no horses to help you -- because
there are no horses on the continent.
Horses don’t live here -- and
won't be brought over until it’s too
late. It's just you, a couple buddies,
and stone-based tools.
American Indians didn't fail to domesticate
buffalo because they
couldn't figure it out. They failed
because it's a buffalo. No one could
do it -- buffalo would have been
amazing creature to put to human
work back in BC, but it's not going
to happen -- humans have only
barely domesticated buffalo with
all our modern tools.
The New World didn't have good
animal candidates for domestication.
Almost everything big
enough to be useful is also was to
too dangerous, or too agile.
Meanwhile the fertile crescent to
central Europe had: cows and pigs
and sheep and goats, easy pest
animals comparatively begging to
be domesticated. A wild boar is
something to contend with if you
only have stone tools but it's possible
to catch and pen and bread
and feed to eat -- because pigs can't
leap to the sky or crush all resistance
beneath their hooves.
In The New World the only native
domestication contestant was:
llamas. They're better than nothing,
which is probably why the biggest
cities existed in South America
-- but they're no cow. Ever try to
manage a heard of llamas in the
mountains of Peru? Yeah, you can
do it, but it's not fun.
These might seem, cherry-picked
examples, because aren't there hundreds
of thousands of species of
animals? Yes, but when you're stuck
at the bottom of the technology
tree, almost none of them can be
domesticated. From the dawn of
man until this fateful meeting, humans
domesticated maybe a baker's
dozen of unique species the world
over, and even to get that high a
number you need to stretch it to
include honeybees and silkworms.
Nice to have, but you can't build a
civilization on a foundation of
honey alone.
These early tribes weren't smarter,
or better at domestication. The old
world had more valuable and easy
animals. With dogs, herding sheep
and cattle is easier. Now humans
have a buddy to keep an eye on the
clothing factory, and the milk and
cheeseburger machine, and the
plow-puller. Now farming is easier,
which means there's more benefit
to staying put, which means more
domestication, which means more
food which means more people and
more density and oh look where
we're going. Cities, population,
bring your animals, plagues welcome.
That is the full answer: The lack of
new world animals to domesticate,
limited not only exposure to germs
sources but also limited food production,
which limited population
growth, which limited cities, which
made plagues in The New World
almost an impossibility. In the old,
exactly the reverse. And thus a continent
full of plague and a continent
devoid of it.
So when ships landed in the new
world there was no American
plague to bring back.
A biological hazard, or biohazard,
is a biological substance that poses
a threat to the health of living organisms,
primarily
humans. This could
include a sample of
a microorganism,
virus or toxin that
can affect human
health. A biohazard could also be a
substance harmful to other animals.

Giraffes
Only 1 kind of giraffe? A 2011
study described eight species of
living giraffes. The eight species
are: G. angolensis, G.
antiquorum, G. camelopardalis,
G. giraffa, G. peralta, G.
reticulata, G. thornicrofti, and G.
tippelskirchi.
There are also seven extinct
species of giraffe, listed as the
following:
†Giraffa gracilis †Giraffa jumae
†Giraffa priscilla †Giraffa
punjabiensis †Giraffa pygmaea
†Giraffa sivalensis †Giraffa
stillei
A 2016 study concluded that
living giraffes consist of a multiple
of only four species. Those
four species are the northern giraffe
(G. camelopardalis), southern
giraffe (G. giraffa), reticulated
giraffe (G. reticulata), and
Masai giraffe (G. tippelskirchi).
Since then, a response to this
study has been published, highlighting
seven problems in data
