The rules are simple. A quick look reveals that the
puzzle is a 9-by-9 grid of squares divided into nine 3-
by-3 square blocks, with some of the squares filled
in for you. The object is to fill in the blank squares in
such a way that each of the numbers 1 to 9 appears
exactly once in each row, column, and block.
If the puzzle has been constructed properly, there
should be only one way to complete the diagram
within the rules of the game.

Last month I had talked about a
Civil Defense candy that I thought
had Iodine in it. I have since found
an old on-line auction that listed the
candy - Civil Defense carbohydrate
supplement candy made in
the 1960’s. There appears to be 2
flavors of candy: wild cherry and
pineapple. Can is marked with the
following information- Civil Defense
Candy, Carbohydrate
Supplement, Date of pack-November
1964. Contents-35lbs and 99
pieces per lbs. Ingredients-sugar,
corn syrup, artificial flavor, U.S.
certified food colors. Manufactured
by Tasty Candy Products, Inc
New York, N.Y.
So the candy was a carbohydrate
supplement. The only information
I could find on the “Tasty Candy
Products of NY” was a legal document
where they had to sue an insurance
company for a claim on 2
fires, one on November 25, 1965 and
the one on December 5, 1965. They
must have closed after that. It has

been suggested that Red dye No. 2
that was later banned, was used in
this candy.
I thought because the red dye was
banned, was why in M&M candies
there was a tan instead of red when
I was a kid. But actually the red
wasn’t replace by the tan, but by
the orange.
In 1954, Peanut M&Ms were introduced.
Initially made only in tan
color. Tan was added to the plain
M&Ms until 1975, and every bag
contained brown, yellow, green, red
and tan candies. Orange M&Ms
were added in 1976 to replace red.
Red M&Ms; were discontinued in
1976 because of "confusion and
concern" over Red Dye No. 2, which
was banned by federal regulators
as a health risk. Red M&Ms; contained
Red Dye Nos. 3 and 40, which
are considered safe. Red returned
in 1987. In 1995, the company decided
that having two shades of
brown M&Ms were unnecessary,
so they did away with the tan ones.
They ran a promotion in which
consumers were invited to vote on
which --blue, pink, or purple would
replace the tan M&M's. Blue was
the winner with 54% of the votes. It
replaced tan in late 1995. There is a
ratio of how many colors you
should get in a pack although it’s
not exact. M&M's Milk Chocolate:
30% brown, 20% yellow, 20% red,
10% orange, 10% green, and 10%
blue. M&M's Peanut: 20% brown,
20% yellow, 20% blue, and 20% red,
10% orange, and 10% green. More
brown 30% & a little less blue 10%
in the plain, than in the peanut 20%
brown, 20% blue.

some of which are in Easter Pastel
colors & some that may be special
ordered from “myM&M’s” site including
Dark Pink, White, Red, Pink,
Orange, Gold, Yellow, Electric Green,
Green, Dark Green, Platinum, Pearl,
Cream, Aqua, Teal, Blue, Light Blue,
Light Purple, Purple, Silver, Dark
Blue, Black, Brown, Maroon. Most
of these colors can have a custom
image printed on them if you’d like.

6 Roma or garden tomatoes
(about 1lb if not Roma), cut
into quarters
1 jalapeño, seeded and
roughly chopped
1/2 large yellow or red onion
(not sweet), peeled and
roughly chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped or
crushed
juice of 1 lemon or lime
1 cup loosely packed fresh
cilantro leaves (you may want
to use only 1/4 cup and then
season to taste.)
pinch of cumin (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 (1/4 cup)Servings Per Serving: Calories: 13
INSTRUCTIONS
Chop all ingredients until just
chunky. Taste and adjust seasonings
if needed. Refrigerate
at least an hour to let the fla-
vors meld. The salsa may be
lighter red than store-bought
salsa because fresh tomatoes
are usually lighter in color than
canned.

Cattle Production is a Major Contributor to Kentucky Agriculture
LOUISVILLE, K.Y. – Cattle
dot the hillsides all across the
Commonwealth, in fact more
than two million of them, according
to the 2017 Census of Agriculture.
Cattle are raised on
38,657 farms in the state, which
is just more than half of all
farms. Cattle and calf sales totaled
$1.0 billion in the state, or
17 percent of all agricultural
sales, making it the commodity
with the second largest value of
sales.
“Raising cattle is both a way of
life and a business in the Commonwealth,”
said David Knopf,
Director, Eastern Mountain Region.
“Rural economies and
communities are supported by
livestock production and the
Census data shows cattle production
continues to be a strong
economic driver.”
In Kentucky there were 38,657
cattle operations, with 2,155,894
head of cattle and calves. Both
the number of farms and number
of cattle have decreased
since the last Census of Agriculture
in 2012. The number of
farms fell by four percent, while
the number of cattle and calves
was down five percent.
Barren County had the largest
inventory of cattle and calves
with 85,544 head. Madison had
the second largest inventory, followed
by Pulaski, Lincoln and
Bourbon.
Forty-seven of the counties had
inventory increases from 2012.
Allen county increased by 7,630
head, while Wayne County
dropped by 14,344.
Breckinridge County had the
largest increase in the number
of farms, 92 farms, while the
largest decrease was 124 farms
in Lincoln County.
Other cattle facts for Kentucky
include:

• Average cattle sales per farm
was $31, 218. Allen County had
the largest average sales per
farm, $104,044.
• Average number of head per
farm was 56. Boyle County had
the highest average, 121 head
per farm.
• Operations with 1 – 9 head, 24
percent; 10 – 19 head, 18
percent; 20 – 49 head, 28
percent; 50 - 99 head 16 percent;
100 – 499 head 13 percent; 500
or more head, 1 percent.

Our hearts are amazing! The average
adult heart beats 72 times a minute;
100,000 times a day; 3,600,000 times
a year; and 2.5 billion times during a
life time.
Although the adult heart only weighs
about 11 ounces on average, a healthy
heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood
through 60,000 miles of blood vessels
each day. If laid out end to end it would
circle the globe two times. It pumps
blood to almost all of the body’s 75
trillion cells. Only our cornea receives
no blood. During an average lifetime,
the heart will pump nearly 1.5 billion
barrels of blood - enough to fill 200
train tank cars. And every day the heart
creates enough energy to drive a truck
20 miles. In a lifetime, it will create
enough energy to drive it to the moon
and back.
When we consider all that our hearts
do for us, its importance cannot be
measured. Without its constant
beating we could not live. It sustains
our lives. Its every beat is a gift from
God but we rarely think about it unless
we have “heart-problems.” Yet,
physical-heart problems are not as
serious as spiritual-heart problems.
Only God can do miracles with “both”
hearts.
The word “heart” occurs six times in
Psalm 73 . But in verse one it speaks
of “those who are pure in heart” - those
whose heart is completely committed
to God and place Him first in their
lives and love Him unconditionally.
Over this God-centered heart is the
heart that Jeremiah describes: “a heart
that is deceitful and beyond cure.” A
heart in this condition needs the Great
Physician to cleanse it, restore it, live
in it and fill it with His love.

Genuine happiness and joy are
in short supply. The prevailing
sentiment of our time is one of
uneasiness punctuated with
hollow, nervous laughter.
Comedians on television crack
their jokes about energy
shortages and other crises and
everyone laughs. Deep down,
however; there is no
spontaneous joy.
Recognizing that it is a rare
and desirable commodity, our
age has an endless array of
short-cuts that promise to give
joy. Drugs . . . liquor ... and
moral anarchy. That dreary
company has left hollow,
unfulfilled people and wrecked
lives in its wake.
The latest fad is to follow some
guru or exotic person, who, for
a price, promises that elusive
serenity.

Real Joy Is Not a Mask!
Yet long ago Jesus Christ
promised those who were united
to him in loving trust that he
would freely give them a joy
which could not be disturbed. In
his own words--” ... you will be
filled with my joy. Yes, your cup
of joy will overflow!” (John
15.11).
Actually joy is one of the key
words of the good news of
Jesus Christ. Jesus’ coming into
the world was described as “the
most joyful news ever
announced” (Luke 2:10).
In spite of the hardships and
persecutions to which they were
subjected, the early Christians
were described as joyful.
Genuine Christian joy is not
some mask. It’s the expression
of the deep inner contentment
in the heart of someone who is
at peace with God, with himself,
and with others. Long ago the
psalmist expressed it this way:
“You have let me experience the
joys of life and the exquisite
pleasures of your own eternal
presence” (Psalm 16:11).
The one route to genuine joy is
Jesus Christ. He came to reveal
LORD, and said, Skin for skin,
yea, all that a man hath will he
give for his life.

But put forth thine hand now,
and touch his bone and his flesh,
and he will curse thee to thy
face.

And the LORD said unto Satan,
Behold, he is in thine hand;
but save his life.

So went Satan forth from the
presence of the LORD, and
God and to deal with our sin
which robs us of joy.
You can know that real joy
when you open your life to him
and personally trust him as your
Savior. Drugs, liquor, and other
substitutes are futile endeavors
to put sin under the rug. The only
path to real joy is to open up,
admit your sin and need to God
and trust his Son, Jesus Christ,
as your Savior.
Then you can rejoice in your
wonderful new relationship with
God - all because of what our
Lord Jesus Christ has done in
dying for your sins - making you
a friend of God (from Rom.
5:11).
“For God loved the world so
much that he gave his only
begotten Son so that anyone
who believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life”
(John 3:16).
Despair is such a waste of
time when you can have joy,
and worry is an unnecessary
burden when there is God.
It isn’t the number of
members a church has on
its roll that counts, it is how
many it has on it knees
“That your faith should not
stand in the wisdom of men,
but in the power of God”
I Cor.2:5

Oh, the humanity!
On May 6, 1937, while landing
in Lakehurst, NJ after a transatlantic
flight, the airship
Hindenburg burst into flames,
killing 35 of the 97 people on
board and 1 member of the
ground crew. “Oh, the humanity!”
was the cry from radio announcer
Herbert Morrison. Recordings
that were made (because
he couldn’t do a live
broadcast) went out but were
sped up which gave Morrison
a more dramatic and distressed
voice. Despite the apparent
danger, there remained
a list of 400 people who still
wanted to fly as Zeppelin passengers
and had paid for the
trip. Their money was refunded
in 1940.

donors to continue their
much-needed donations
during the summer months
by offering a chance to win a
2019 Toyota Tacoma. Every
donor, age 18 and up, who
donates from June 1 -
September 6 will be entered
to win the brand new truck.
Donors can donate every 56
days, giving them up to two
opportunities to be entered
this summer.
KBC, which began in 1968

area’s blood-banking efforts,
