THE BANNER SEPTEMBER 1, 2019 3
The rules are simple. A quick look reveals that the
puzzle is a 9-by-9 grid of squares divided into nine 3-
by-3 square blocks, with some of the squares filled
in for you. The object is to fill in the blank squares in
such a way that each of the numbers 1 to 9 appears
exactly once in each row, column, and block.
If the puzzle has been constructed properly, there
should be only one way to complete the diagram
within the rules of the game.
CRAB ORCHARD
606-355-2730
Last month I did a story about
the music industry and a fire that
had destroyed countless music
master tapes. One of the bands
that was mentioned in that piece
was Boston. I had not known
until recently that when that band
was signed to Epic records in
1975 that there wasn’t even a
band at all. The guitarist Tom
Scholz and original singer Brad
Delp were the only two that
signed the deal.
In a PBS television show
“Nova” the-secret-life-of-scientists-and-engineers-there
is an in
depth interview with Scholz. He
is an MIT-trained engineer and
inventor.
He explained that had done
most all the recording of the
tracks that record executives had
listened to in the demos on the
first Boston album. The record
company was unaware that what
they had heard was almost all performed
by Scholz. They wanted
the band to re-record the demos
but Scholz convinced them that
it would have to be done on the
equipment that he had in his basement
in order to get the correct
sound. He had invented a lot of
the equipment that was used himself.
It was all analog, this was before
digital came along. The record
company requested that the finished
tapes be sent to California to be
mixed and for a live performance, so
Scholz had to gather musicians to
perform for the executives. Only one
song was recorded by the group
which does have a different sound
than the rest of the album. The record
producer was in on the secret and
worked with Scholz on having the
final mix done in California. Brad Delp
added vocals in California and the
band was named Boston at that time.
When Scholz made it big as a
musician, he was still working as
an engineer. Scholz stated that his
father asked him why he was wasting
time with the engineering, that
he should be putting a new album
together. He eventually started an
electronics company selling
pocket sized guitar amps “The
Rockman” that had the unique
sound that he had created. This
also turned out to be a very successful
venture. Scholz said then
his father didn’t know what to tell
him.
If you want to guard against loss from a
storm or accident, it helps to be insured by a
company who’s on your team. Kentucky Farm
which means there’s an agent in every county
KENTUCKY FARM BUREAU
DID YOU KNOW?
• X-rays were discovered by
accident. While experimenting
with cathode rays covered by
thick cardboard in 1895,
Wilhelm Rontgen noticed a light
being cast on a fluorescent board
across the room. The first X-ray
was of the hand of his wife, who
saw the image of her bones and
exclaimed ‘I have seen my
death!” so he named them X-
rays, using an “x” to represent
their mysterious nature.
• Kit Kats are made of Kit Kats.
The manufacturers leave no Kit
Kat uneaten, so every reject is
mashed into a paste that’s used
to fill the wafers. Because every
imperfect Kit Kat was already
filled with other imperfect
Kit Kats, and some of the Kit
Kats they fill will also be rejected,
every time you eat a Kit
Kat, you’re basically eating layers
of Kit Kats within Kit Kats
within Kit Kats.
• Ravens can spot a cheater and
will shun one another for being
unfair. The birds work together
to get equal amounts of food -
but if they notice another raven
taking more than its fair share,
they immediately lose trust and
won’t cooperate with them in
the future.
The missing ingredient is the power of God.
If there ever was a time when The church today needs what
These are days of diluted doctrine,
a new touch from God can Biblical Christianity and contemporary
Christianity is vast
sadly lacking is that irresistible indeed. There is a conspicuous
power that sent the early contrast between the magnificent
triumphs of the early church
with the Gospel. They went out and the meager results of our
(2) The Persecutors - Religious
Leaders
(3) Why The Persecution - Jesus
Exposed Their Sinful Motives
(4) Result - Jesus Was Crucified
But Rose Again From The
Dead To Show His Authority
Over All Evil.
Reference - Luke 22:63-65
65
And the men that held Jesus
mocked him, and smote him.
64
And when they had blindfolded
him, they struck him on
the face, and asked him, saying,
Prophesy, who is it that
smote thee?
65
And many other things blasphemously
spake they against
him.Luke 24:7 Saying, The Son
of man must be delivered into
the hands of sinful men, and
be crucified, and the third day
rise again. Why is the resurrection
so important? (1) Because
Christ was raised from the
dead, we know that the kingdom
of heaven has broken into Earth!
History - God’s Mighty Power
is at work destroying sin, creating
new lives and preparing us
for Jesus’ second coming. (2)
Because of the resurrection we
know that death has been conquered
and we too will be raised
from the dead to live forever with
Christ. (3) The Resurrection
gives authority to the church’s
witness in the world. (4) The
resurrection helps us find meaning
even in great tragedy no matter
what happens to us as we
walk with the Lord. The
ressurection gives us hope for
the future. Sinner friend, Jesus
was crucified for you and me.
He died and rose again for you
and me. Please don’t turn Jesus
away. Come to him today. God
century will be religion without
without Christ, forgiveness
without regeneration, politics
without God, heaven without
hell."
There is something great and
essentially lacking in our lives:
The missing ingredient is the
power of God. It is not enough
to have pardon. We also need
power. God's plan is always
to use His power to propagate
the Gospel. We must not
only be born of the Spirit, but
filled with the Spirit. It is not
enough to have truth.
not stand in the wisdom
of men, but in the power
of God”
Dr. William F. Holland Jr.
LIVING ON PURPOSE
LEARNING HOW TO ENCOURAGE OURSELVES
So many today are dependent
on other people but we
must learn how to walk by
ourselves with only holding
on to His hand. We must
learn how to hear God’s
voice for ourselves. We must
develop a spiritual confidence
in God and not be
afraid to make decisions
based solely on His voice
even if everyone we know
turns away from His truth. If
we do not start learning today,
it will be too late to develop
an understanding when
the world begins to shake. Of
course, the devil wants to
keep these revelations a secret
because he realizes they
are military strategies that can
tear down his spiritual strongholds
and defeat his powers
of darkness. Remember the
story found in I Samuel chapter
30 about David and his
army when they returned
home to Ziklag and found the
city had been burned and all
of their families had been
taken captive by the
Amalekites. Verse 4 says,
“Then David and all the
people that were with him
lifted up their voice and wept
until they had no more power
to weep.” But notice in the last
part of verse 6, “but David
encouraged (strengthened)
himself in the Lord his God.”
You may not always feel like
standing strong or being electrified
with an overflowing
current of excitement. But,
these are the times when you
need to have a private consultation
in front of the mirror
and lay down God’s law to
your will! We are being called
to listen to King Jesus as He
inspires us to confess out loud
HIS TRUTH over ourselves
and our situations and then
make the decision to live it!
A Greek philosopher
asked his attendant to prepare
a dinner for his closest
friends. He advised him
to "prepare your best meal
for my distinguished
guests."
On the day before the banquet
he asked, "What are
you going to serve my
friends?"
"Tongue," he replied .
With curiosity he asked,
"Why tongue?"
"Well, my lord, tongue is
my best meal. With it we
may bring happiness, dispel
sorrow, remove despair
and inspire others," he said
quietly.
A few days later the philosopher
went again to his
attendant and said, "I want
you to prepare your worst
meal for my guests next
week."
On the day before the banquet,
he asked the same
question, "What are you
going to serve my guests?"
"Tongue," was the reply.
"Tongue?" he asked in
amazement. "You said that
tongue was your best meal.
Now it's your worst."
"Yes ," said the attendant.
"With the tongue we break
hearts, destroy reputations,
promote discord and begin
wars."
David said, "The righteous
will 'use their
tongues' to rejoice in the
Lord and take refuge in
Him. All the upright in
heart will glory in Him."
James said, "No human
being can tame the tongue.
It is a restless evil, full of
deadly poison ."
The tongue: It can be a
blessing or a curse.
Paws Off Xylitol; It's
Dangerous for Dogs
This sugar substitute, found in
some human foods and dental
products, can be poisonous to
your dog.
If your dog sticks his nose in
your handbag and eats a pack
of sugarless chewing gum, the
consequences could be deadly.
Sugarless gum may contain xylitol,
a class of sweetener
known as sugar alcohol. Xylitol
is present in many products
and foods for human use, but
can have devastating effects on
your pet.
Gum isn’t the only product containing
xylitol. Slightly lower in
calories than sugar, this sugar
substitute is also often used to
sweeten sugar-free candy, such
as mints and chocolate bars, as
well as sugar-free chewing
gum.
Other products that may contain
xylitol include: breath mints
• baked goods • cough syrup •
children’s and adult chewable
vitamins • mouthwash • toothpaste
• some peanut and nut
butters • over-the-counter
medicines • dietary supplements
• sugar-free desserts, including
"skinny" ice cream.
Xylitol can be used in baked
goods, too, such as cakes, muffins,
and pies — often because
the baker is substituting another
sweetener for sugar, as in products
for people with diabetes.
Why is Xylitol Dangerous
to Dogs, but Not People?
In both people and dogs, the
level of blood sugar is controlled
by the release of insulin from the
pancreas. In people, xylitol does
not stimulate the release of insulin
from the pancreas. However,
it’s different in canines:
When dogs eat something containing
xylitol, the xylitol is more
quickly absorbed into the
bloodstream, and may result in
A note to cat and ferret owners:
Xylitol does not seem to be
as dangerous for cats and other
pets. Cats appear to be spared,
at least in part, by their disdain
for sweets. Ferret owners, however,
should be careful, as ferrets
have been known to develop
low blood sugar and seizures,
like dogs, after eating
products containing xylitol.
Symptoms of xylitol poisoning
in dogs include vomiting, followed
by symptoms associated
with the sudden lowering of
your dog’s blood sugar, such as
decreased activity, weakness,
staggering, incoordination, collapse
and seizures.
If you think your dog has eaten
xylitol, take him to your vet or
an emergency animal hospital
immediately. Because hypoglycemia
and other serious adverse
effects may not occur in some
cases for up to 12 to 24 hours,
your dog may need to be hospitalized
for medical monitoring.
In a large nonstick Dutch oven, heat the oil over medium heat. Add chicken; cook until lightly browned, turning once,
about 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate and keep warm. Add bell pepper, onion, and jalapeno pepper to pan. Cook for 5
minutes. Stir in rice; saute for 1 minute. Add the broth, water, and tomatoes with liquid; break up tomatoes with a
spoon. Return chicken to pan. Increase heat and bring to boil. Reduce heat to low. Cover; simmer until rice is tender and
liquid is absorbed, about 20 minutes. Stir in the olives. Place in a serving dish and serve.
