The rules are simple. A quick look reveals that the
puzzle is a 9-by-9 grid of squares divided into nine 3-
by-3 square blocks, with some of the squares filled
in for you. The object is to fill in the blank squares in
such a way that each of the numbers 1 to 9 appears
exactly once in each row, column, and block.
If the puzzle has been constructed properly, there
should be only one way to complete the diagram
within the rules of the game.
THE BANNER NOVEMBER 1, 2019 3
From
The
Editor
Tom Tyler
When I was young, I remember my
mother “when she had heard children
cursing”, she would say “listen
to them blackguarding”, to
which I always thought she was
talking about cursing itself.
Blackguarding actually means to
talk about or address in abusive
terms. (Why do you come to my
shop to blackguard my goods?) So
curse words do not have to be involved
for it to be blackguarding. I
don’t know that have ever heard
anyone else, in real life, even use
the word “blackguarding”. Apparently
the term “Blackguard” was
used in the 1964 film “My Fair Lady”
but I had always thought they were
saying “Blaggard” which means
scoundrel. Blackguard is English
in origin and dates to at least 1532.
By 1535, blackguard was being
used to refer to the lowest servants
in a household and by 1560, it was
being used to refer to attendants,
dressed in black and often attending
some villainous character. In the
1680’s it referred to the vagabond
or criminal class and by the 1730’s
for a scoundrel.
Blackguard = Blaggard?
Another similar word ‘blagger’. One
meaning of ‘to blag’ is to use clever
talk or deceit to obtain something.
• The word “Panic” comes from the
name of the ancient Greek god Pan,
People eat more on Thanksgiving
than on any other day of the year.
Ham is often served alongside the
Thanksgiving turkey in many
non-traditional households.
Benjamin Franklin thought the
wild turkey-not the bald eaglewas
the best choice for the
national bird.
Turkeys will sometimes
spend the night in trees.
The fleshlike appendage that
hangs off of a turkey's neck is
called the wattle.

We need power. Pt2
For I am not ashamed of the
gospel of Christ: for it is the power
of God unto salvation to every one
that believeth (Romans 1 :16). The
Gospel must come unto us not in
“word only, but also in power and
in the Holy Ghost” (I Thess. 1 :5).
God has given us the spirit “of
power” (I Tim. 1 :7). The early
Christians were men of “power”
and “holiness” (Acts 3 :12). “And
with great power gave the apostles
witness of the resurrection of the
Lord Jesus” (Acts 6 ;8). Truly it is
“not by might, nor by power, but
by My Spirit saith the Lord of
hosts” (Zech. 4 :6).
Today we have too many quasi-
Christians following a quasi-
Bible Persecutions #5
Moses
(1) The Persecuted - Moses
(2) The Persecutors - The Israelites
(3) Why The Persecution -
The Israelites Wanted Water
(4) Result - God Provided
Water in Answer to Moses
Prayer
Reference - Exodus 17:1-7 1
And all the congregation of
the children of Israel journeyed
from the wilderness of
Sin, after their journeys, according
to the commandment
of the LORD, and pitched in
Rephidim: and there was no
water for the people to drink.
2
Wherefore the people did
chide with Moses, and said,
Give us water that we may
drink. And Moses said unto
Christ. We have so many weak
Christians that the church has
become a dormitory instead of an
armory; the world a playground
instead of a battleground. Too
many folks have been inoculated
with a mild form of Christianity
and are immune to the real thing.
We need more men of faith and
fire, conviction and vision, men
with their feet on the ground and
their hearts in heaven.
Spiritual apathy and mediocrity
must go.. There is no place for
passive Christians. It is either
revival or revolution. It is either
Christ or chaos. Things cannot go
on as they are. Too long the devil
has tried to camouflage the issue.
It is time for the people of God to
claim the power of God. The issue
them, Why chide ye with me?
wherefore do ye tempt the
LORD?
3
And the people thirsted there
for water; and the people
murmured against Moses,
and said, Wherefore is this
that thou hast brought us up
out of Egypt, to kill us and
our children and our cattle
with thirst?
4
And Moses cried unto the
LORD, saying, What shall I
do unto this people? they be
almost ready to stone me.
5
And the LORD said unto
Moses, Go on before the
people, and take with thee of
the elders of Israel; and thy
rod, wherewith thou smotest
the river, take in thine hand,
and go.
6
Behold, I will stand before
is surrender and obedience. We
must not only read the Word, but
heed the Word; not only search the
Bible, but search our hearts. Too
many have lost their power, lost
their faith and lost their first love.
No wonder that men suspect that
God is dead. The glory of God has
departed from the people of God.
May God shake us out of our
senseless, sinful sleep and spiritual
stupor.
How feeble is the flame of
evangelism! It is time to get right
with God and busy for God. God’s
second best is not enough.
Negative acquiescence to the
Great Commission will never do.
The great disproportion between
our lips and our lives, our creed and
our conduct, our opportunity and
our endeavor must die. We dare not
be satisfied, selfish or still. It is
time for us to say good-bye to the
playthings of this world. We must
have the marks of the cross upon
us. We must put our hands to the
plow. We must go outside the camp
bearing His reproach.
thee there upon the rock in
Horeb; and thou shalt smite
the rock, and there shall come
water out of it, that the people
may drink. And Moses did so
in the sight of the elders of
Israel.
7
And he called the name of
the place Massah, and
Meribah, because of the chiding
of the children of Israel,
and because they tempted the
LORD, saying, Is the LORD
among us, or not?
Again the people complained
about their problems instead
of praying. Some problems
can be solved by careful
thought or by rearranging our
priorities. Some can be
solved by discussion and
good counsel. But some
problems can be solved by
This is such a serious subject
and yet many churches have
made the decision to feed the
beast instead of destroying it.
We must die in order to live
but the “will” is not only
controlling lukewarm
Christians but also many
pulpits. Most people do not
want to hear about dying to
the flesh! They want to hear
about how wonderful they
are and how God wants to
give them their hearts
desires. Religious people will
fight and kill you over their
traditions because their
views are more important
than having a personal
relationship with God. If all
attendees were truly filled
with the Holy Spirit, they
would demonstrate the
character of Christ and turn
prayer. We should make a
determined effort to pray
when we feel like complaining
because complaining
only raises our feelings to
stress. Prayer quites our
thoughts and emotions and
prepares us to listen.
the world upside down for
Jesus. Sadly, I’m convinced
that many religious people
are living in the false security
of a lazy spiritual lifestyle and
have never taken or desired
to take the step of faith into
the Holy of Holies. This
explains why the religious
world is HUGE and will
continue following the
message of comfort and
pleasure while the remnant
bride may be tiny in number
but dedicated to walking the
narrow path of truth no
matter how painful. When we
have a genuine passion to
yield our will and grow
deeper in our spiritual
intimacy with Jesus, our
perspective on everything
(including church and
religion) completely changes.
May God Bless You All, until
next month when we will
be writing about The Temptations.
Where does wax
come from?
Paraffin wax, which is classified
as a natural wax, is the most common
wax used in candlemaking,
and can be said to ultimately come
from plant life.
In order to protect themselves from
adverse weather conditions plants
produce a layer of wax on their
leaves and stems. Material from
dead plants 100-700 million years
ago accumulated in large quantities
and eventually became buried
beneath the surface of the earth.
After a long period of time, forces
of heat and pressure turned the
slowly decaying plant material into
crude oil, otherwise known as petroleum.
Because of the nature of
waxes, being inert and water repellent,
they were unaffected by the
decomposition of the plant material
and remained intact, suspended
within the crude oil.
Petroleum companies "harvest"
the crude oil and process it. They
refine the oil, separating the different
properties into Gasoline,
Kerosene, Lubrication oil, and
many other products. In many
cases, the wax in the petroleum is
considered undesirable and is refined
out. The refinery will process
the wax into a clean, clear liquid,
or as a solid milky white block, and
make it available to companies who
may have a use for it.
The refined wax is called paraffin,
which comes from the Latin "parum
= few or without" and "affinis =
connection or attraction (affinity)".
Basically there are few substances
that will chemically react with or
bind to this type of wax.
There are two types of companies
which process the paraffin wax
used in candle making, the Petroleum
Refinery and the Specialty
Wax Processor.
Beeswax
A less common but more highly
renowned wax for candlemaking is
beeswax. Classified as a natural
wax, it is produced by the honeybee
for use in the manufacture of
honeycombs.
Beeswax is actually a refinement of
honey. A female worker bee eats
honey, and her body converts the
sugar in the honey into wax. The
wax is expelled from the bee's body
in the form of scales beneath her
abdomen. The bee will remove a
wax scale and chew it up, mixing it
with saliva, to soften it and make it
pliable enough to work with, then
attach it to the comb which is being
constructed. Usually another
bee will take the piece of wax which
has just been attached to the comb,
chew it some more, adding more saliva
to it, and deposit it on another
section of the comb. The combs are
built up, honey is deposited inside,
and then the combs are capped
with more wax. Since several
worker bees construct the comb
at the same time, and the hive is
constantly active with other bees
flying around and walking on the
combs, depositing foreign matter
onto the combs, the composition
of the wax becomes very complex.
As is the case with paraffin, collecting
beeswax is also the
byproduct of a process. The beekeepers
main interest is in the collection
of honey. The capping wax
must be removed in order to extract
the honey; they save the
capping wax until they've collected
enough to make it available
to market.
Because beeswax is harvested in
relatively small quantities it does
not boast the same availability as
paraffin and is therefore more expensive.
It is used extensively in
cosmetics and candlemaking.
Candles made from 100% beeswax
are generally held in high regard,
when burning they glow beautifully
and impart a very pleasant
honey like aroma.

Easy Country Cornbread Dressing
• 2/3 cup chopped onion
• 2 cups chopped celery
• 2 quarts of day old, grated corn bread
• 1 quart of day old, grated biscuits
