Giraffes
Only 1 kind of giraffe? A 2011
study described eight species of
living giraffes. The eight species
are: G. angolensis, G.
antiquorum, G. camelopardalis,
G. giraffa, G. peralta, G.
reticulata, G. thornicrofti, and G.
tippelskirchi.
There are also seven extinct
species of giraffe, listed as the
following:
†Giraffa gracilis †Giraffa jumae
†Giraffa priscilla †Giraffa
punjabiensis †Giraffa pygmaea
†Giraffa sivalensis †Giraffa
stillei
A 2016 study concluded that
living giraffes consist of a multiple
of only four species. Those
four species are the northern giraffe
(G. camelopardalis), southern
giraffe (G. giraffa), reticulated
giraffe (G. reticulata), and
Masai giraffe (G. tippelskirchi).
Since then, a response to this
study has been published, highlighting
seven problems in data
interpretation, and concludes
