PAGE 4 - MADISON MESSENGER - September 1, 2019 www.madisonmessengernews.com Midway and South Solon projects need to be rebid By Kristy Zurbrick Madison Editor Improvement projects for two Madison County villages are on hold following bid openings at the Aug. 27 county commissioners meeting. The village of Midway is looking to install a tornado siren and two new cisterns for fire protection. No bids were submitted for the project, which is estimated to cost $100,000. Midway received Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds last year to help pay for the siren, cisterns and several other projects. CDBG funds are administered through the Ohio Office of Community Development and go toward improvements that benefit low- to moderate-income populations. Whitaker Wright of CDC of Ohio, the county’s CDBG coordinator, said he will talk to the engineering firm that set the specs for the siren and cisterns project to figure out what to do next. The work will go back out to bid in some form, he said. Midway’s other CDBG projects include drainage improvements on State Route 38 and installation of a walking path and handicap-compliant parking at the village park. Those projects should go out to bid in January, Wright said. Originally, they were supposed to go out to bid this summer, but the Ohio Department of Transportation is doing work on Route 38 that will alter the sidewalk project. Wright added that the drainage and walking path projects “simply take longer the design.” Also on hold is a project in the village of South Solon. The county received CDBG funding to tear down two vacant houses— one on High Street where a fire caused the second floor to collapse and one on Main Street that has been vandalized and presents a safety concern with an old cistern on the property. Engineers estimated the cost to tear down the houses to be $19,700. The county received one bid for the project. A company out of Urbana quoted $21,722. The county cannot accept a bid that is more than 10 percent over the estimate. The Urbana company’s bid overshot that limit by $52. Tony Reeder and his son, Cody, both born and raised in Mansfield, are the featured artists at Gallery on High in London in September. Tony is a self-taught photography buff who moved to London in 2011. After taking a couple of drawing and stained-glass classes, he joined the London Visual Arts Guild. Excelling in both mediums, Tony soon became the LVAG secretary in 2012 and president in 2014-15. Cody still resides in Mansfield, where he studied graphic arts and photography at North Central State College. He works for Buckeye Education Systems in Lexington as marketing director and specializes in catalogue layout and banner creation. He also trains educators to use tech equipment in art and STEM classes. Their “Like Father, Like Son” exhibit has something interesting for everyone to see. The opening reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 5 and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 6. The gallery is located at 5 E. High St., London. Regular hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Open studio space available to area artists The London Visual Arts Guild offers free open studio space from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at 7 E. High St., London, for anyone who wants a space to create, paint or draw. Guild artists are there to inspire and help with projects if needed.
