What better way to celebrate the
new season than with the type
of spring clean that lifts the spirits –
not the dust mites?
Yes, as we come down from the
highs that were aplenty at New
Zealand Fashion Week, it’s time to
take a long, hard look at the wardrobe
and consider with which on-trend
heel you’ll step into the new season.
Fortunately, we’ve fully immersed
ourselves in the world of fashion to
put our favourites on show for you.
From the well-travelled and inspiring
Jane Daniels to the family network
behind Ruby and Liam, we have
connected with some brilliant fashion
minds to see what goes on behind the
scenes. We also dipped into what’s
drawing fashion designers to Bali.
In our fashion shoots, Jessica Amor
brought to life the floaty, floral trend
that’s making itself known this spring,
as well as adding the pops of colour
that will see you shaking off the last
the winter’s hold. And don’t worry,
we have an update for men too.
Fashion flows seamlessly into the
home, prompting Gaynor Stanley to
focus her attention on dressing the
bedroom. School up on the dos and
don’ts for the ideal bed ensemble and
you’re destined to keen on top of that
beauty sleep.
Enjoy the latest Style – it’s most
definitely in fashion.
Heart of the City
Vero Moda
IN FASHION
New Zealand Fashion Week has come and gone,
ensuring we know with which heel to step into the new
season. Right in the thick of it was our very own Jessica
Amor of Alchemy Styling, the stylist for our fashion
shoots. Winner of the ‘Get Stylie with Kylie’ competition,
Jess assisted Kylie Cooke, whose credentials include
being lead stylist for New Zealand’s Next Top Model and
dressing Orlando Bloom, in creating the Heart of the City
runway show. We already knew she was a superstar!
Fashion For a Cure is back for another year, bringing
together big names and high fashion to raise funds for
Breast Cancer Cure – New Zealand’s only not-for-profit
organisation dedicated to funding scientific research into
curing this prevalent disease. The Christchurch event will
take place at The Great Hall in the Arts Centre on 19
September, with guests enjoying a three-course dinner,
arrival cocktail, flowing wine, as well as the latest looks
from Trelise Cooper, Moochi, Carlson, Ruby, Storm,
Nom*D, and many more.
SPEND
Danish fashion label Vero Moda has been dressing
women in on-trend, accessible styles since 1975, yet,
it’s only been a month since it landed in a store in New
Zealand. Farmers has added the brand to its stable, as
well as its Aware by Vero Moda collections – seasonal
offerings where sustainability is at the heart of the
production process.
August was also the month in which Westfield Riccarton
gained the South Island’s first Lorna Jane. Started by
Australian fitness instructor Lorna Jane Clarkson in 1989,
the activewear brand now fills the shelves of more than
200 stores in 17 countries. Look good, feel good, right?
Have you been to Oxford recently? Our Style tip is to
stop into nzulu (next to Cruisy Days Diner on Main
Street). With the likes of Sabatini, Stella+Gemma, and
Mor, you might find a trip to the country is just what your
wardrobe ordered.

Kiki Health
RESET
Needing a new season reboot? Kiki Health has just
landed in New Zealand at Nicola Quinn Beauty &
Day Spa. The supplement range includes superfoods,
probiotics, collagen, plant-based nutrients and more.
Unlike most on the market, all of the products are
natural, organic, GMO-free and non-irradiated, without
any fillers or synthetics.
Also in Christchurch, Balance Pilates has put the zen
back into the old masonic lodge in Cashmere (corner
of Dyers Pass and Hackthorne roads). Expect reformer
machines, Booty Barre, pre- and post-natal classes, and
more. For those further south, September sees the arrival
of Fierce Grace Yoga in Queenstown. The heated studio
will open its doors in Queenstown Central (19 Grant
Road, Frankton) as the first in Australasia and tenth in the
world, joining others in London, New York and Italy. The
UK’s fastest growing yoga brand incorporates a mix of
yoga styles – from ashtanga to yin – with 12 classes based
on the same core poses and principles.
INDULGE
Turn your spring clean into a styling session and take
your living room to the next level with the IKEA PS
2014. Boasting an award-winning design that was inspired
by science fiction movies, pull the strings to change the
shape and the level of light coming from this statementmaking
shade. Find yours at Nordic Chill (The Colombo,
Christchurch).
If you’re tired of looking at your own living room, make a
date at someone else’s. Aosta is a new restaurant on the
Arrowtown foodie scene that is creating quite the stir.
Named after a small town in the Italian Alps, Aosta takes
over from where Saffron and Rosie B’s left off, though
with a newly designed décor thanks to Anna-Marie Chen
– who designed The Hills’ lodge. Co-owned by Sir Michael
Hill, the head chef is another big name, Ben Bayly, hailing
from Auckland’s fine-dining restaurant The Grove.
want to immediately jump on a
plane to go on a round-the-world trip.
The Britain-born fashion designer has
a distinct passion for the world and its
beauty and you can see this clearly in
her collections. It is travel that helps
define her and the fashion label she
created back in 1986.
Daniels travelled back to London at
20 years old to study design, pattern
making and tailoring and now travels
extensively every year. There’s no
question that Daniel’s designs are handcurated
depictions of the places she
goes. “Anything can inspire me. A detail
on a building, a costume in a museum,
a colour combination in a painting.” She
moves about the world inhaling the
sights, smells and colours all around.
“Like in Egypt, the indigo water against
the chartreuse reeds on the Nile.” Add
to this the lapis, turquoise and carnelian
stones in Tutankhamen’s jewellery and
she has herself an exciting collection.
Daniels says her philosophy is to
design ‘want-to-have’ rather than
‘need-to-have’ garments. Every one
of her collections is a careful curation
of contemporary, versatile, easy-towear
pieces that range from casual
to corporate to cocktail. Her starting
point for all her ranges is the creation
of her own colour palette. She then has
her European fabrics bespoke-dyed in
Europe. Her designs, she says, have a
backbone of good tailoring with elegant
simple lines. “I like to incorporate
innovative and unusual detailing,
bending the rules somewhat for the
more imaginative pieces.”
The Auckland-based designer has
become well known for always using
high-quality fabrics. She heads to the
Paris textile fair twice a year to get the
latest prints, textures and technical
fabrics, most often from Italy. Because
of the seasonal differences she can have
them in-store in New Zealand before
Europe and America. Her travels have
mostly taken her to Europe for her
fashion inspiration but more recently
to more exotic destinations as brand
ambassador for the Christchurch-based
Innovative Travel Company. She’s been
to Egypt, Iran, India, Oman, Morocco
and Sri Lanka. It’s this exposure to new
places, new cultures and new colours
that inspires her ideas.
One of her favourite destinations
for work has been the Silk Road in
Uzbekistan. “What will always remain
with me is being surrounded by walls of
intricate tiles of brilliant blue, turquoise
and saffron in the Shah-i-Zinda (sacred
street) in Samarkand.” She also loved
India for its vibrancy, Kyoto for is
serenity and Inner Mongolia for its
unique and natural landforms.
Her upcoming summer collection is
inspired by the tropical island locations
in the Caribbean, with fresh white

STYLE | profile 21
The colours of Samarkand, in intricate tiles and peony pink yarn, make it a favourite destination.
linens and ice. “Cream pastels and a
palette of strong tropical colours – redorange,
Galliano yellow, spring green,
turquoise and hot pink linens.”
If Daniels could choose any country
to live in, after New Zealand it would
be Italy. She loves the food, the history
recorded in the architecture and arts
and the fascinating regionalism. “Every
town in Italy seems to have a specialty
in terms of food or an artisan tradition
that has been maintained.” She’s made
leather-bound books with a master
bookbinder in Fabriano, a town famous
for paper for over 1000 years.
“And furthermore, France is just
across the border, I adore France and
love its wine!”
She also loves Italian food. Once in
Bologna she found a little restaurant,
De Cesar, which opened in 1955. “I
love their dish of ravioli pumpkin, butter
and crispy sage.” But her favourite was
a hole in the wall in Florence – Vini E
Vecci Sapori. “A Mama-, Papa- and sonoperation
with the best zucchini flower
pasta.” But, she says, a New Zealand
pinot noir or an outdoor summer
lunch with a dry rosé is rather
unbeatable, too.
Daniels sees the biggest challenge
of the fashion industry as waste. This
is compounded by the fixation of the
world to share their lives online and
having a visible status. “A narcissistic
cult of celebrity-by-degree exists.
Ultimately the result is an accelerating
need that pressures the fashion
industry to produce ‘the new’ more
often.” Daniels says this model is not
sustainable for the planet. “Every few
months a news story breaks about
millions of dollars of new unsold
clothing being incinerated or going into
landfills to protect a brand.”
But the Jane Daniels label is proudly
New Zealand made and has its own
high standards. They pay fair wages
and the construction costs are well
governed by New Zealand labour
laws and the company’s own ethical
standards. “We know the people who
make our garments and have good
first-name friendships with our sewers
and cutters.”
The same can be said of Jane Daniels
clients, who she says are fashionforward
and discerning and know
that her high quality, mostly natural
European fabrics and quality tailoring
are not inexpensive. “I think, most
importantly, they are engaged, in that
they tell me how much they enjoy the
back story and travel/history research
that I bring to my collections.” Two of
her clients loved the brand so much
that a few years ago, they joined the
Jane Daniels team.
She personally loves the simple yet
detailed Japanese aesthetic, citing her
favourite designer as Yohji Yamamoto.
“His draping, asymmetrical cutting,
origami folding and architectural
detailing.” Early on she was influenced
by the sleek, tailored looks of Italian
designers like Giorgio Armani and also
Donna Karan. But she says now there’s
a much greater demand for less rigid
clothing and for fabrics that stretch and
move with you. Her original collections
were built around suiting as there was
always a strong delineation between
work attire and leisure. But that’s no
longer the way.

Jane Daniels indigo dyeing in Japan.
The ancient Japanese document below inspired this silk print.
“There is an ever-increasing demand for
trans-seasonal and travel-friendly clothing.
This is how my collections have evolved.”
Never sitting still long, Daniels is about
to head off to Greece. One of her
colleagues in the Christchurch store is
getting married on Santorini and, much
to Daniel’s delight, has invited the boss.
She’s going to head to Meteora to see
the clifftop monasteries, to Athens and to
some of the islands she’s researched. “I
hope to do some painting and to gather
some ideas for jewellery design.” She
advises this for anyone travelling. Daniels
takes hundreds of photos but also travels
with a pen, a watercolour notebook and
a bijou paint box to record what she sees.
“It makes you observe more closely and a
just a few coloured marks on a page can
be a fabulous souvenir of your trip.”
While her trips are all busy soaking up
the sights, smells and sounds Daniels also
recommends a pool day every so often.
“A chance to reflect on what you have
done so far and perhaps edit your photos
and write a few postcards.”
When not designing garments or
travelling the world, you’ll find Daniels
on the beach, or at home with her
four cats reading a historical novel or a
biography on a pioneering woman. She
also loves to paint. “I love the looseness
of what I would call happy accidents that
watercolour can provide.”
Drawing inspiration from an everchanging
world ensures Jane Daniels, the
person and the brand, stays very on-trend.

DESIGNED IN NZ,
MADE IN BALI
Vanessa Ortynsky speaks with Kiwi brands connecting with Balinese
artisans to produce the latest fashions.

26 STYLE | report
Rosie Shelton in Luna
& Rose’s Bali studio.
During a trip to Bali with some friends in 2012, Rosie
Shelton couldn’t help but admire the beautiful
culture and way of life of the Balinese. She was also
impressed by their craftsmanship, especially their
silverwork, and soon realised there was no better place
to start her label.
Prior to launching Luna & Rose, Shelton was working
for a large global surfwear brand and was always
disappointed when the actual makers behind each piece
weren’t properly acknowledged. With Luna & Rose, she
says, “It’s so important that our artisans’ stories are told
and their crafts are maintained and upheld.”
By choosing to work hands-on with local artisans,
Shelton is able to maintain and showcase that connection
in an authentic way.
Unlike Chinese factories where clothing and jewellery
is produced in high volume, sometimes thousands of
each item, Bali attracts boutique labels and designers who
are looking for smaller orders – which was part of the
appeal for Jyoti Morningstar, founder of New Zealand
yoga wear and accessories brand WE-AR.
“The people are connected to their traditional village
culture and [in Bali] it was possible to sample small run
sizes and gain access to creative workshops that specialise

STYLE | report 27
in printing and traditional plant dying.”
The island’s manufacturing boom has
attracted a handful of Australian and, more
recently, New Zealand designers; many
who have now set up their manufacturing
base on the island.
Not only are Balinese artisans incredibly
skilled, their craftsmanship comes from
generations of passed-downknowledge.
“As you travel around Bali, each village
specialises in a different craft form whether
it’s painting, silversmithing, wood carving,
stone carving... you name it and there is
guaranteed to be a specialist here in Bali,”
says Shelton.
For New Zealand company Rhye
Intimates, it was actually by crosselimination
that owner Chantal Myers
discovered the right manufacturer for her
business.
“I did a lot of research to source a
local manufacturer in New Zealand.
However, with low MOQs [Minimum
Order Quantity] and materials required to
produce underwear garments, I couldn’t
find anyone locally who was able to
accommodate my needs, particularly as a
start-up on a budget.”
The right materials and low minimum orders drove Rhye Intimates’ decision to launch in Bali.
Yoga wear and accessories by WE-AR are made in B-CORP-certified
production houses in Bali.
The ability to work directly with local artisans was a big factor in
Rosie Shelton’s decision to base Luna & Rose in Bali.
For Myers, it’s important that their manufacturer values
their employees and provides good working conditions.
Operating ethically, through fair wages and safe working
conditions, is at the company’s core values. Fortunately,
they managed to find the right manufacturer in Bali, who
specialises in lingerie and works primarily with start-ups and
small businesses.
Is it more affordable to manufacture clothing and
jewellery in Bali? Says Morningstar, “For those whose main
measure of success is financial, it would be unlikely to be a
good fit because, no, it is not more affordable.
“Honestly, in many ways this is a good thing. In our
supply chain, we know that the people doing the work are
being paid well so they can live well. This is often not the
case in scenarios where production costs less.”
Myers would eventually like to bring production back to
New Zealand, but appreciates that Bali is only a short flight
away. She also finds Bali business culture and etiquette
is similar to New Zealand with so much Australasian
influence in Bali already. For start-ups, she notes that it’s
certainly worth exploring for business opportunities.
Shelton finds that doing business in Bali is different
than in New Zealand and the artisans she works with are
creatives rather than business people. Balinese people work
They choose to work hours that
best suit them and live a more
balanced and relaxed lifestyle
than many of us in New Zealand.
in their home industries and factories are few and far
between, unlike in other parts of Asia and the rest of the
world. “My silversmiths don’t own computers, nor are
they driven by huge business development.”
With a direct flight from Auckland, more and more
Kiwis are both visiting and moving to Bali. It’s definitely
becoming more common to manufacture from here
and open businesses. And while the New Zealand
fashion industry might be less than impressed with the
increase in offshore manufacturing, many Bali-based Kiwi
designers are making valuable contributions to Balinese
communities and operating under ethical working
conditions that might otherwise have been out of reach.

FILLING THE GAP
As unmet need for medical treatments through the public health system grows, the
Canterbury Charity Hospital performs a vital role. We speak to Philip Bagshaw,
co-founder, chairman and volunteer surgeon, about its amazing services.
What led to the development of a charity hospital in
Canterbury?
It was in response to Canterbury District Health Board slashing
elective surgery places by many thousands. Many were for
conditions like hernias and haemorrhoids, which can have a
big effect on people’s lives if not treated. My colleagues and
I started out working from a mobile surgical bus and then
opened our doors in Harewood Road, Bishopdale, in 2007
providing day surgery two or three days a week.
How does the charity hospital operate?
With the help of 300 volunteer surgeons, dentists, anaesthetists,
counsellors, nurses, technicians and support staff we provide
free medical, surgical, dental and counselling services to the
people of Canterbury. Our range of services has increased
significantly since 2007 and we now have three buildings
including a day surgery, endoscopy theatre and counselling
offices and an oral surgery clinic with a community room.
Who is eligible to access these services?
For the majority of our services, our patients have to be turned
down for their treatment by the Canterbury District Health
Board. They do not have medical insurance and cannot afford
to be seen privately. They also need a referral from their family
doctor or dentist, depending on the treatment.
It’s about even more than elective day surgery and medical
outpatient services, right?
Our services constantly change to meet the need and currently
include colonoscopy (acute and screening), gynaecology
and women’s health, general surgery (abdominal, rectal),
urology, oral surgery and dentistry, counselling (self-referral),
orthopaedics (upper limb) and cataract surgery. At our busy
endoscopy clinic we see people aged under 50 with rectal
bleeding and, unfortunately, our screening has identified patients
with symptoms of bowel cancer that wouldn’t have otherwise
been detected.
How does the Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust enable this
non-government-funded medical service to continue?
We rely on the generosity of the local community as volunteers
and for donations and bequests, along with fundraising
applications, to raise the $800,000 a year we need to run
our free services. Because we have only three paid staff and
low overheads, a large percentage of the money we do raise
goes directly towards patient care. We also host an annual
fundraising function, our Charity Hospital Christmas Gala at
the Air Force Museum on Friday 29 November.
As we head into spring
you’ve probably already had
people telling you that ‘now
is the perfect time to sell
your home’. The thing is, it’s
true, and here’s why.
The most obvious reason is that homes
look great at this time of the year. When
the sun’s out and the garden’s in bloom,
it’s that much easier to paint a picture that
will truly inspire prospective purchasers.
Of course, there are other contributing
factors too. With the start of a fresh year
just a few months away, there will be
plenty of families scrambling to secure
properties in desirable school zones,
while new job opportunities in 2020
mean professionals will also be looking
to relocate.
And don’t forget the role Christmas
plays! The summer holidays are a huge
marker in the sand for us Kiwis, and many
buyers will be fuelled by a desire to be
ensconced in their new home by mid-
December. This could help expedite the
negotiation process. Last, but certainly
not least, there’s the fact that we’re simply
conditioned to buy at this time of the year.
Spring brings with it an air of optimism;
a willingness to embrace change which
sees buyers enter the market with a real
sense of commitment and resolve.
If you’re thinking about buying or selling,
or are just after some friendly advice, then
please don’t hesitate to get in touch – the
NZFW WRAP
The most exciting week of the year for the New Zealand fashion industry celebrated
familiar favourites and emerging new talent. The fashion-filled week saw us running
from venue to venue to soak up the talent and creativity of our clever community.
Words Vanessa Ortynsky
New Zealand Fashion Week kicked off on Monday night
(26 August) with Kate Sylvester’s truly romantic A/W
2020 collection. As love letters inspired by her parents during
the 1950s flooded the runway, a squad of models in fiercely
feminine silk and lace dresses as well as polished suiting
took over the catwalk. Our favourite look was the feminineyet-powerful
lilac skirt suit, which was paired with Barbour
wellingtons, a nod to Kate’s outdoorsy side.
Just days before her show, Kate Sylvester announced her
new online marketplace for pre-loved pieces, aligning herself
with the growing focus on sustainability. Reloved is a forum for
customers to re-sell their used KS pieces and shop for the best
vintage gems, preventing them from becoming landfill.
On day two, Maggie Marilyn’s debut NZFW show took
place offsite at Morningside’s Glasshouse with citrus trees and
floral installations galore. Instead of goodie bags, guests were
invited to take home fresh fruit and flowers. Maggie’s collection
featured a range of ethereal silks and pastels, which she’s
become known for over the years, but also a few black pieces
that will seamlessly fit into our Kiwi wardrobes.
Next up, we cheered through Jockey’s lively Tokyo show
at Q Theatre, where All Blacks and Silver Ferns modelled

the latest range. As is customary at Jockey shows, it was
lighthearted and fun, getting everyone excited for the
upcoming Rugby World Cup in Japan (from 20 September).
A definite highlight of the week was Paris Georgia’s first ever
NZFW show. Their sophisticated collection was everything
we’d hope for, with immaculate tailoring and timeless staples.
It featured plenty of sculpted silhouettes made with firm,
luxurious fabrics and body-hugging skirts, sleeveless dresses
and voluminous sleeves. Standout pieces included a glossy
sage coat, worn with a pleated skirt; a dramatic red dress with
a low back and the massively oversized (and sunsmart) beach
hat with white shirt and sheer biker shorts. We also fell in love
with their yellow silk dress.
Day three started bright and early with the immensely
talented Benjamin Alexander’s intimate morning presentation
just above Amano at The Quay Project. The impossibly chic
collection was consistent with the aesthetic we’ve come to
expect from the designer, who won season one of Project
Runway New Zealand. We couldn’t get enough of the
dramatic gowns and billowing silhouettes, which were paired
with shoes from his new collaboration with Mi Piaci. The
collection (named after the important women in his life) is
already available to shop via his website.
Later on, we ventured to Morningside for a peaceful
presentation where Juliette Hogan’s workroom was
transformed into a natural oasis. Pianist Gabrielle Peake
created and performed an original piece to reflect the
collection and we immediately felt a sense of calm wash over
us. Ten models walked around as we sipped on refreshing
elderflower, cucumber and rosemary drinks, allowing us to
admire their elegant, streamlined looks in a muted, pastel
palette. It’s easy to imagine a capsule wardrobe consisting only
of silk separates and floor-length dresses.
The highlight of every fashion week is the Stolen Girlfriends
Club show, which took place outdoors at the Avondale
Racecourse this year. Transformed into a Berlin nightclub with
a techno soundtrack, an army of brooding models and fire
barrels being lit one-by-one in front of our seats, it proved to
be a gamechanger yet again. The outdoor show began in a
blaze of glory, with studded leather pieces and a full-on red
leather ensemble.
All in all, it was a fabulous and exhausting week, meeting
new faces and examining the ever-changing industry. Our
fashion choices need to be more considered and it’s reassuring
to see Kiwi designers taking a step back to create collections
that include recycled and sustainable materials.

INTERNATIONAL TRENDS,
LOCAL FASHION
Indulge in the latest international fashion trends and the
local designers who are nailing them.
Words Brittany Pooley
Fun and ultra-femme, this season sees us in florals,
frills, pastels, embellished trainers and pearls. Let’s
look at who’s doing them well and how to wear them.
FUN FLORALS
Take your pick of florals this season
Floral is in bloom for 2019. This budding international
trend may be a signifier for spring fashion, but frankly,
with such great prints hitting the market, we’re getting
impatient for warmer temps. Seek out floral pieces
with contemporary silhouettes in dresses, blouses,
pants, jumpsuits and co-ords. Whatever your style,
a floral print will make any wallflower stand out. For
now, opt for more trans-seasonal pieces that can
be layered on colder days. Pair with your favourite
brogues, loafers or trainers until we warm into sandalwearing
weather. Escape your winter blues and step
into early spring with a fresh and fun floral print.
Peace Jumper in
Hamlyn.
Glenmore Dress in
Navy Vivid Floral by
twentyseven names.
SORBET SHADES
Coat your wardrobe in a palette of pastel
This year’s trending palette is pastel. Think mint greens, soft pinks, baby
blues and everything lavender. The ‘it’ piece for this palette is a chunky
knit. Style over your favourite shirt dress with just a peak of collar showing,
or go bold and colourblock a head to toe pastel co-ord. If you’re a loyal
wearer of black, as many of us southerners are, introducing pastel to your
wardrobe can be a bit daunting. This trend can be honoured with just a
hint of colour through your accessories. Anything in lavender leather will
do. With hoards of options available, this trend is a creamy and sweet
addition to your seasonal wardrobe.

STYLE | fashion 35
FEMME FRILLS
Feature frills for the upcoming
season
Frills are back as a trending detail
this fashion season. While 2018
was the year of the elasticated
off-shoulder bardot, it seems this
year we have traded in milkmaids
for prairie girls with much more
conservative necklines. Seek
out tiers of fabric with printed
dresses, midi-skirts, blouses and
prairie dresses. Go for pieces
with generous folds of fabric
around the sleeves, cuffs, neck or
with tiers through the garment.
This trend is best worn in sheer
textiles. Reach for soft colours
such as cream, lavender, light
pink and baby blue.
Whether they create big
volume or a subtle feature, frills
are a delicate detailing that can
add a touch of vintage romance
to any outfit this season.
EMBELLISHED TRAINERS
Embellish your trainers for workouts,
work and weekends
Trending last year, embellished trainers
are back for another season. With endless
styling options, a great pair of sneakers
is a staple for every wardrobe. Not to
mention they are a reliable source of
comfort for a busy, active day. This season,
we say go big or go home. Play with
pastels, glitter, jewels, leopard prints, studs,
cut-outs and embroidery. If worn with a
pair of long pants or skirt, make sure to
break up your pieces with a peak of skin.
Experiment with shape, colour, print and
height to find your go-to pair. Pair with a
barely-there anklet sock or a statement
crew sock, nothing in-between.
Set the pace with your own style of
EDGY PEARLS
Give a timeless classic some modern-day edge
Valentine Trainer by Kathryn Wilson,
available for pre-order.
A polished string of pearls has long been a key accessory
for the conservative dresser. This year, pearls are back in
fashion in a big way, but this time with a little edge. To
get amongst this 2019 accessory, look beyond your classic
white set. Seek out imperfect pearled pieces with differing
surfaces, sizes and shades. With pearl-studded sunglasses,
oversized earrings, layers of bracelets, chokers, anklets, hair
clips and closures on garments – the options are endless.
Mix it up and pair with both silver and gold. We’re in
favour of necklaces with just a touch of pearl worn over an
in-season turtleneck or with an unbuttoned button-up.
TRENDING APPROACHES TO
SUSTAINABLE FASHION
New Zealand can’t stop talking about sustainable fashion, literally.
The Sustainability Conversation launched New Zealand Fashion Week.
Here, we help you contribute to the conversation with our top five trending
approaches to sustainable fashion.
Words Brittany Pooley
GO SLOW
Slow Fashion is a fashion philosophy. It focuses on
the ethics behind the processes and resources used
to make clothing. There are many approaches to
slow fashion, so seek out brands that are transparent
about theirs. Start easy by keeping an eye out for
labels with smaller runs and made-to-order garments.
Beba Top in Natural by Ellis and Friends.
SHOP LOCAL
Buying locally-made fashion pieces
is a sustainable approach to fashion
consumption. Not only are you supporting
your local economy, you’re also backing the
designers and makers of your local fashion
community. With a high expectation for
social responsibility, New Zealand-made
goods ensure the quality of your product
and the wellbeing of the people behind it.
Vintage Blush Linen Fabric
DIY
DIY fashion gives your
wardrobe more meaning
and purpose. Start small,
and have fun pairing
contemporary sewing
patterns with seasonal
fabrics. Need help? Plan a
fun evening session with
friends to swap skills and
ideas or seek out existing
communities online with
the hashtag #diyfashion
Lend the Label.
RENT IT
Renting fashion is an innovative approach to sustainable
fashion. Have a big event coming up? Instead of
splurging for an expensive piece you’re likely to wear
once, rent a designer dress online. It’s high-end fashion
at a low-end cost, all the while reducing your impact
on the environment.
Velvet Heartbeat.
SEEK ALTERNATIVES
A key part of fashion’s sustainability issue revolves around
the textiles used. Be conscious of your textile choices and
seek out more sustainable alternatives. Have you ever
considered plant-based textiles with a minimal footprint?
For fashion that won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth,
check out your local designers using Piñatex, a natural
leather made from pineapple.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
Play together, stay together. Curious whether the same applies to work
together, Ella James put some questions to Ruby’s Sharma sisters about
being colleagues in the fashion business the family bought in 2008.
Image: Michael Rooke @ Fashion Quarterly
EMILY MILLER-SHARMA
RUBY GENERAL MANAGER &
LIAM DESIGNER
As a family, what has been your proudest ‘Ruby’
moment?
To be honest, it’s not one single moment, it’s that
every morning we get back up, get back in to the
workroom and still love making clothes and the
industry that we are lucky enough to be part of.
Which family member is always there to diffuse any
hostile situations that may arise?
Mum is probably the most consistent, however we
all take turns at this role!
If you weren’t working at Ruby, what career path
would you have chosen?
I have made my own clothes since I was 13
(although back then they were more like “clothes”)
so clothing has always been a part of who I am. If
I wasn’t in the clothing industry I would still be in
a creative industry of some description – it is just
natural for me to make things, and that is where I get
my energy from.
How do you spend your free time as a family?
Mum and Dad have a house at Whiritoa on the
Coromandel so that’s the best time for us to
properly connect as family members rather than
work colleagues. However, we truly love food so
sitting together around the dining table has always
been an important part of our family dynamic.
How do you spend your weekend?
My primetime starts at 4.20pm Friday and goes until
4.20pm Saturday. I love this time because I feel so
free. I listen to Kim Hill every Saturday morning, go
out for dinner or to a concert with friends, read,
paint, cook.
How would you describe your home’s style? Is it
similar to that of your fashion style?
I’m quite a sentimental person and I live in a onebedroom
apartment with my husband so a word to
describe my place is “full”! I am drawn to pieces that
have strong colours, materials and shapes, or have an
element of craft.
What music would you find playing in the Ruby
office? Do you all agree on it?
It’s such a mix! Myself and our marketing executive,
Ima, curate the office playlist.
ANNA-LISE SHARMA
RUBY HEAD OF MARKETING &
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Do you all work from the same office?
We sure do – we work from our head
office in Grey Lynn, Auckland, and all live
very close by, which makes our morning
commute dreamy!
How would you describe working so
closely with family?
Equal parts amazing mixed with interesting!
Did you all fall into your individual roles
naturally?
It has been a natural evolution into our
current roles. Emily has always had a passion
for making clothes whilst I’ve always had
more of a love for the forward-facing side
of the fashion industry.
What challenges have you faced in New
Zealand fashion retail?
The fashion industry is ever evolving so
every day we are adapting as a business,
which makes it an incredibly exciting
industry to be a part of.
We bought Ruby 11 years ago, at a time
where online retail was in its infancy and
conversations about sustainability were not
being had – the industry that we know and
love is one of the world’s most polluting
industries so as a fashion business we are
on a journey to understand the social and
environmental impacts of our business
practices and products. This is something
we are passionate about – there is no
overnight fix, however, we are committed
to transitioning to a more sustainable reality.
What brand would you most like to
collaborate with?
There are so many beauty brands doing
amazing things, such as Drunk Elephant,
Summer Fridays and Glossier, who we
always have our eyes on.
Where has been your favourite family
holiday destination?
As well as the family beach house in
Whiritoa, we have had a few special trips to
India as a family that I will cherish forever!
What is your favourite meal to cook
together?
Our father was born and raised in New
Delhi, India, with British/Indian parents, so
we are definitely known for Sharma curry
nights in our house!
Where would you all choose to dine out?
Why?
Prego in Auckland’s Ponsonby is a firm
favourite – they always get it so right.

REINVENTING THE HEEL
The cyclical world of fashion loves to revisit old favourites. Such is the
case with the New Beginnings range from ECCO Shoes, which reinvents
iconic sneakers from the past for spring/summer 19.
Sneak a spring in your step
Spring is a season of new beginnings for nature and a time
when we look afresh at the world around us. Nature, and
its many colours, tones, shapes and textures, has always
been a driving force at ECCO. But the inspiration is not
just superficial. Late founder Karl Toosbuy knew the foot
should always come first, so he created anatomical lasts that
follow its natural curves, and offer the best possible wearing
experience. Spare a glance at your feet as your step into
the new season and ask yourself ‘could they be happier’? If
the answer is ‘yes’, it‘s time to refresh and renew your shoe
wardrobe.
How do you improve on best-selling sneakers?
Essentially, ECCO’s designers have come up with fresh takes
on classic silhouettes in its New Beginnings range, introducing
new styles and colourways to have both men and women
walking into spring in style.
Men can look forward to an upgrade of one of ECCO’s
most beloved sneakers. The new Collin 2.0 model is slimmer
than the original, with a more relaxed and modern last shape.
The heel height has been raised 3mm to eliminate any feeling
of ‘sinking’ back into the shoe. Contemporary handcrafted
details and new, rich premium leather with suede and nubuck
panels complete the makeover of Collin into the perfect
relaxed, yet refined shoe choice. For a more formal style, opt
for the version decorated with perforations in the style of a
classic brogue.
What colours are in for the new season?
Collin 2.0 for men features a fresh, yet timeless colour palate
of black and coffee, navy and marine, warm grey and cognac
or classic white.
While for women, the greys of winter are emphatically
shaken off in the bright new colour palette of the sporty
ECCO Vibration 1.0 range. Transform your mood and your
look, striding out in the soft red of the Petal lace-up sneaker
or zingy Retro Blue ballet flat. For those not so bold, yet still
after a youthful look go Concrete or Shadow White. Good
vibrations are promised across the range thanks to the ultramodern
and astoundingly light, shock absorbent and flexible
sole. Combined with quality leather and suede construction
that’s naturally soft, light and breathable you’re looking at allday
comfort in an energetic style that’s right on trend.
businesses,” says Renee Murray from
NZME Events. “This is what makes our
expo quite varied. We have artisan
crafters exhibiting alongside national
brands like Vivo Hair or Suzuki.”
Renee says it is great to see all the
various women visit the show, from
teenagers to business women, mothers
WEARABLE
MAKEUP
There’s plenty of change in the makeup world, but what
model looks can you make your own?
Words Kate Preece
The good news is that
you don’t have to
apply lashings of glitter to
be on trend this season.
There are other options.
In fact, once you’ve sifted
past the more avant-garde
looks – face appliques
and bleached eyebrows
– you’ll find some rather
accessible styles. So, arm
yourself with a steady
hand, breathe in and step
into a new palette.

COLOUR ME CRAZY
A hard pill to swallow for southern
fashionistas, but it’s time to break out of
black and embrace another season of
colour. Consider a boldly coloured lip or
even a dash of colour on the eye. When
you do, remember, it will be important
you fix any bright shades in place – so
don’t skimp on the primers and consider a
setting spray if you fear your makeup will
make a run for it. It’s much harder to carry
off streaks of wandering purple or orange.
A model prepares for P.E Nation show, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2019.
SMUDGE IT OR JUST
WING IT
The smudge is back. The ‘80s
trend returns, knocking out the
sharp liner look with one that’s
more smoky – and so much easier
to apply. Take one long-wear liner,
apply, then smudge with a brush
to ensure it’s less crisp and much
softer. No steady hands necessary
and slip-ups blended away with a
casual brushstroke or two.
However… don’t pack
away your pencil sharpener
or liquid liner quite yet.
The eye wing is still a thing.
How it is changing this
season is that, quite simply,
it’s getting thicker. Imagine
swapping your pencil for
a highlighter and you can
see how fine lines have
become a thing of the past.
SO CHEEKY
Been chained to the desk too long to
share the naturally sun-kissed look of
winter escapees? Spring is here and with
it comes a good excuse to add colour
the sun-smart way – with a bit of a blush
going on. Warm peach is a surprisingly
usable option and can lend to a romantic,
soft look, especially when paired with
similarly toned lippie, or go bold with hot
pinks to be more playful and frivolous,
matching that frilly fashion in stores.
Warm colours on the apples of your
cheeks will turn up the heat, while
bronzer should remain restricted to the
top of your nose and across the cheeks.
Charlize Theron.
SAY IT WITH RED
Red lippie just doesn’t get old. However, how
it’s applied does. Whether you call it ‘diffused’
or ‘just kissed’, using a brush to apply your
colour or leaning on those lippies with a matte
finish, will mean it’s all a little more blurred
between the lines – exactly as it should be. It’s
all about the imperfect finish currently, which is
terribly convenient. I certainly wouldn’t take it
to the extreme to get the so-called ‘snogging’
effect this look has evolved into, but leaning
more towards a lip stain can be a nice change.
Then, there are the shades. The brick tone
is in, but as 2019 was decreed the year for
coral, if you follow what Pantone says (Living
Coral being its Colour of the Year), a hint of
pinky-orange is truly encouraged. Whatever
you do, with lips like these, you should count
on them doing all the talking.
ALL ABOUT APPEARANCES
Transform Clinic’s Dr Ian Little was the first to use Botox cosmetically in New Zealand.
We asked Christchurch’s appearance medicine expert about changing attitudes and
options when it comes to enhancing our skin without surgery.
You’ve been an appearance medicine practitioner for more
than 30 years; what do you regard as your personal speciality?
We have fantastic results with clients who regularly visit
Transform’s Christchurch or Dunedin clinics, or my monthly
consultations in Queenstown clinics. We encourage clients
to do a little, often, for the best outcome, which also
spreads the cost of treatment. I like working out the best
combinations and plan for several treatments to:
1. improve skin quality;
2. shape the face to a youthful shape;
3. enhance the eyes and the lips; and
4. always try to minimise blemishes such as brown spots,
red veins and wrinkles
Have you seen the demand for dermal fillers and
Botox increase since you first started offering this in
New Zealand?
Our industry is booming. Market researchers predict the
global facial injectable market, which was US$7,125.65 million
in 2017, will balloon 165 per cent by 2026. Facial injectables
are the most popular non-surgical procedure in the US with
botulinium (Botox and Dysport) twice as popular as the next
most requested non-surgical face lift option, hyaluronic acid.
Facial injectables include dermal fillers, as well as synthetic
fillers. New Zealanders have embraced non-surgical options
and the number of treatments we’ve delivered has grown
5-10%, with many new operators entering the market.
Has the attitude to such treatments changed?
Yes, it’s certainly more acceptable now. Also market demand
has widened from primarily women aged 35-60 to men and
a wider age range of women desiring non-surgical options to
rejuvenate their skin. The trick is to not overdo it.
How do we avoid looking artificial?
The artificial look and freezing faces have nothing to do
with the tools of Botox and fillers. It is whom that is using
these tools that you need to be aware of. If you play any
instrument you know that anyone can press a key, blow
into a mouthpiece or strike a string. But, it has nothing
to do with music. How frozen or natural someone looks
is technique dependent. We are known for our natural
administration and use of specific techniques to capture the
essence of each client.
Are there any new or improved treatments that are
impressing you currently?
I love working with skin quality programmes such as our Glo
and Go Fotona Laser Fotofacial programme. Most recently
I’ve been excited by Profhilo (great for solving ‘tech neck’) a
new hydrating and skin tightening product from Italy.
To what do you attribute the 20-year longevity of
Transform Clinic?
Passion to see the delight on our clients’ faces.
PERMANENTLY PRETTY
We talk with Wake Up With Make Up’s new South Island licensee
Miranda Hill about the art of micropigmentation, otherwise known as
permanent makeup, and her talent for creating facial masterpieces.
What does a micropigmentation artist do?
Also known as permanent makeup and cosmetic tattooing,
micropigmentation is an advanced form of tattooing
in which medical-grade pigments are infused into the
dermal layer of the skin using pre- sterilised needles. The
technique creates a shadow of colour that perfectly mimics
applied makeup in soft natural tones of colour. I thrive
off creating a customised brow that suits the shape and
style of your face, with eyeliner and lips being popular
treatments as well.
How does your varied beauty experience contribute to
your micropigmentation work?
As a micropigmentation artist, it is vital to understand the
skin, the different textures, pigments and enhancements.
My experience specialising in age prevention, acne and
pigmentation and alongside appearance medicine nurses
is hugely beneficial for knowing the techniques used and
the placing of the facial muscles. Combining that with my
experience as a makeup artist, knowing the shapes of
clients’ facial features and how to define them, is a huge
advantage for doing cosmetic tattooing.
When did you know that the beauty industry was the
place for you?
When I was about 10 years old… I would go into my
parents’ bathroom and mix up potions like toothpaste and
cleanser and put them on as a face mask! It’s in my blood!
At age 14 I began working for my sister in her hairdressing
salon and there was a beauty therapist working there, so I
guess it all just thrived from there.
What has been a highlight of your 26 year career so far?
It has all been a highlight, however my seven years at
Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown would have to be up
there. I began working out of one room at the Millbrook
gym, from there I grew an amazing team of girls from all
parts of the globe to become voted 6th best spa in the
world. And, of course, having worldwide celebrities to do
treatments on was a definite highlight! The clients I have
met along the way and their stories they share are also a
highlight for me.
What does it mean for you now to be a licensee of the
national Wake Up With Make Up?
I am excited to join a family business with Michelle and
Kirsty (mother and daughter), and recently my own
daughter Charmaine joining our team to concentrate on
Central Otago clients. We see an opportunity to grow
the Wake Up With Make Up brand and remain at the
forefront of the NZ permanent cosmetics industry through
continuing education, advancing our knowledge on current
technology and fashion trends and always meeting and
exceeding regulations.
How do you split your time between Christchurch,
Queenstown and Invercargill?
With lots of multivitamins!! I am very fortunate to have
a great support network in all three places. When I’m
working I have a team cooking my dinners and running
around after me and get lots of grandchildren hugs.
DERMAL DETOX
We usually associate the word ‘detox’ with diet and the elimination
of certain foods, but it applies equally to the skin.
Words Clemency Alice

82 STYLE | beauty
T
he skin is the body's largest organ and because
of its continual exposure to the external
elements and pollutants, we need to provide our
skin with a seasonal detox. This will enable the
release of any toxins, boost oxygen in the cells and
get skin back to its optimum condition.
There are various methods for approaching a
detox for the skin. The Japanese Skincare Revolution,
written by Japanese beauty expert Chizu Saeki,
suggests doing a ‘skin fast’ once a week. This means
avoiding product and makeup on your face for 24
hours, and performing a simplified routine of washing
your face with water.
Another approach is to take advantage of
New Zealand’s geothermal activity and privileged
access to thermal hot springs. The sulphur pools
at Maruia Hot Springs resort – just 200km north
of Christchurch – are a blissful escape from the
hustle and bustle of the city and will provide your
skin with the ultimate skin detox. Nestled amongst
native bush in a flourishing sheltered valley in the
Lewis Pass, the thermal spring pools are infused with
natural minerals and trace elements that assist in
detoxifying the body and skin.
La Prairie’s SOS solution to recharging and
detoxifying the skin is their Cellular Power Infusion,
Comprised of three patent-pending biotechnologies
and the exclusive Cellular Complex, this 28 to 40
day seasonal booster treatment works effectively
through energising, renewing and rebuilding the skin.
This is presented in four small vials, in which the
actives are combined then released once activated.
Take advantage of New Zealand’s
geothermal activity and privileged access to
thermal hot springs.

Another highly effective skin
detox solution is Gatineau’s Renew
7 Detox Serum. This intensive
purifying seven-day treatment for the
skin will revive tired and devitalised
skin, boosting your skin’s natural
detoxifying action. Enriched with
a sophisticated formula of AHAs,
Peptides and Vitamin C, your skin
is flushed of toxins, leaving it deeply
cleansed, bright and healthy.
Dry body brushing for only a few
minutes each day (before showering
or bathing) will miraculously
transform your skin. This simple
detox ritual sloughs away dead
skin cells and detoxifies through
stimulating the lymphatic system.
Elemis Body Detox Skin Brush
made from natural cactus bristle
enhances this proven skin treatment
through improving the texture and
tone of the skin.
Using clay-based masks once a
week provides an instant, effective
method of drawing out toxins
whilst clarifying and firming the skin.
Sodashi’s stellar Brightening Mineral
Mask both detoxifies AND revitalises
the skin with its ‘three types of clay’
and marine mineral-rich content of
seaweed and spirulina. Using this
mask as your weekend beauty ritual
will leave your skin looking plumper,
softer and more radiant.
When detoxing your skin from
the outside, remember to maintain
internal health with organic seasonal
fruit and vegetables and a balanced
well-nourished diet. This will only
enhance the benefits, resulting in a
more glowing, restored and revived
skin for spring.
Murad’s NEW INVIsICar
Velvety-smooth resurfacing
How do you know GM Hair would be the right salon for you?
Expertise that counts
With over 40 years of experience
owning a hair salon and working with
Gallery has a huge range of expertise
that suits all people and all hair types.
We are a professional salon with staff
that uphold great values and treat all
people with the respect they deserve.
Our salon has an atmosphere that
sets it apart from any other salon,
with a unique modern industrial vibe it
creates a space you want to come and
spend time in.
The best stylists
At GM, we always allow time for a
consultation before your appointment,
that way we can get to know you
better on a personal level, your hair
and the outcome you are wanting.
From there, understanding all angles,
we will be able to make an educated
decision on which of our team would
be best suited for you and your hair.
Consider what’s important
People often dismiss how important
it is to be using the correct hair
products, not just for your individual
hair type but for the benefit of your
overall health. No one head of hair is
the same, therefore you should have
an individual routine to get the best
out of your hair type, think of it like
a skincare routine, everyone’s skin
is different and needs different care,
your hair works the same.
Not only do we need to be aware of
what we are using on our head for our
hair’s sake, but for our overall health.
When you wash your hair, whatever
you use washes over your whole body
seeping into your scalp and skin. It’s the
same for styling products, they don’t
just stop with your head – you use
your hands to apply them, therefore
they also get into your skin.
Our salon is environmentally
friendly along with our products and
their packaging. We are doing our
best to contribute to positive change
and caring for our world. You can
come here and get your hair done
guilt-free!
Take it slowly
You only have one head of hair,
remember to treat it wisely and
carefully. Don’t rush into anything and
remember to listen to your stylist’s
advice when it comes to a dramatic
change; it can definitely be achieved
but make sure to allow time to be able
to do the full process correctly.
Only use good products
A lot of hair products contain
parabens, sulphates and other nasty
chemicals that not only ruin your hair
health but have carceogens in them
that you don’t want coming in contact
with your body.
We always say, how many heads
do you have? Treat yours with the
ultimate care! Our New Zealand
made MHC (Mike Hair Care) product
range is 100% natural with no nasty
chemicals. It also contains keratin from
NZ sheep wool, which is a protein that
penetrates the hair follicle repairing it
from inside out.
Do your hair and overall health a
favour and only use the good stuff.
BEDTIME STORIES
We spend a third of our life asleep. Or ought to. But if tossing and
turning is one of your bedroom issues, try these expert tips for
quality kips and the latest fashion in the bedroom.
Words Gaynor Stanley
ABOVE: Introduced in autumn, Ballantynes reports the dark floral Fiori duvet has outsold any
other duvet introduced by M.M. Linen in its five-year history – four times over!

90 STYLE | home
Quality over quantity
Don’t mistake 1000 thread count sheets with
necessarily the highest quality. Unless woven
with very fine threads you may feel like you’re
slipping between the tablecloths.
“In my opinion, thread count on its own
does not tell the entire quality story,” says Bed
and Bath Buyer for Ballantynes Deb Hymers-
Ross, explaining the measurement of quality is
subjective. Do you measure this by sheets that
are going to last for years, not shrink, fade, pill
or wear out? If so, choose percale.
“If you do not like the feel of a thicker, crisp,
often cool-to-the-touch sheet and measure
quality by the ‘aha’ moment when you first get
in to a comfortable bed, followed by a good
night’s sleep, you’ll prefer sateen.
“In my experience you are one or the other,
a percale or a sateen customer.”
Egyptian cotton
It’s considered to be the best in the world
because of its long, smooth fibres that produce
a fine yarn that is strong and less likely
to pill. However, Consumer New Zealand
warns much of what is labelled Egyptian cotton
also contains cotton grown elsewhere. For the
real deal, look for the Egyptian Government’s
seal of authenticity (as below).
The new Victoria range from Lala Linen, which imports
genuine Eygyptian cotton linen made in Egypt.
Delicate florals feature in Wallace Cotton’s new spring collection in the Allegra floral toile
print, above, in soft blues and white, and Dovetail, a lightweight organic cotton quilt.
Organic cotton
The trend to living more organically is also
manifesting in bed linen. A growing number of
brands, including Wallace Cotton and Sheridan,
have introduced organic cotton products
into their ranges or moved away from plastic
packaging to self-packaging in fabric. Organic
cotton is grown without the use of pesticides
or fertilisers and won’t undergo chemical
treatments, like mercerising to increase lustre.
Look for the GOTS (Global Organic Textile
Standard) certification that requires a minimum
of 95 per cent organic fibres. “Having seen
and felt the finished products made in organic
cotton I cannot see any detriment to the
finished product, nor loss of luxury,” says Deb
Hymers-Ross. “If we choose only natural fibres
we assist the environment every time we wash
our sheets. The chemicals used to produce
synthetic fabrics break down in the wash and
their effects have been seen in our oceans as
far away as Antarctica.”

STYLE | home 91
Too tight!
We’re getting bigger. Our mattresses are too, and
when you upgrade you’ll likely need to upsize your
bedding. Twelve years ago the standard drop on
a fitted sheet was 34cm and it is now 45 to 50cm
thanks to ‘pillow top’ cushioning and padding. Pillow
cases have increased two centimetres in each
direction so a loftier pillow is required to fill the new
50 x 75cm standard.
Both Ballantynes and McKenzie & Willis report
their best-selling size has moved from Queen to
King, while the most luxuriously sized bed, the
California King – as long as it is wide at 203cm
square – is now commonly seen in bedding
showrooms. “Customers want bigger beds for
less heat transfer, less chance of roll-together and
less partner disturbance,” says McKenzie & Willis’
Bedding Manager Allan Walton.
Also watch out for that tricky bedroom issue,
shrinkage. Monique Bohnenn of Lala Linen advises
an average cotton product will shrink 6-8% after
washing at high temperature. Lower temperature
washing at 30–40°C will cause less shrinkage.
Too hot!
Allan Walton reports growing demand for cooler
beds as New Zealand homes become warmer
through extra insulation and Cantabrians move into
better insulated rebuild homes. He says most topend
beds now feature cooling foam technologies,
cooling fabrics, natural fibres or even breathable
gussets on the pillow tops (Sealy Posturepedic).
“Make sure your new mattress has a breathable
natural fibre such as wool, silk, cashmere, Angora or
alpaca. A bed needs to breathe so that it is warm in
winter and cool in summer,” he says. For sleeping
luxury at a new level, he says coming in a few
months are Ultra Luxurious Hand Tufted Beds from
King Koil. These will be the only New Zealand-made
hand-tufted beds.
Australian celebrity florist, Saskia Havekes, partnered with Sheridan
on this limited-edition The Botanist Grandiflora digital print quilt set
featuring hand-drawn botanicals.
Linen lore
Thread count: the number of threads both vertically
and horizontally per 10cm 2 . The lower the number the
looser the weave (think muslin); more closely woven
fabric (minimum 180 thread count) wears better and
shrinks less.
Percale: closely woven (at least 225 threads per 10cm 2 )
fabric with an equal number of warp (vertical) and weft
(horizontal) threads woven in a square pattern. More
hard-wearing than sateen because the fabric is equally
strong in both directions, it’s less prone to pilling and
changing of shape.
Sateen: smoother, shinier and silkier twill fabric woven
by weaving one warp (vertical) yarn across several weft
yarns diagonally.
Dyson’s new V11 cord-free vacuum is ideal
for sucking dirt out of mattresses.
Just right
Along with general posture, our choice of mattress and
pillows are very important for spinal health, says Dr
Cassandra Fairest of the New Zealand Chiropractors’
Association. “If we aren’t getting good quality sleep, then our
nervous systems aren’t effectively able to regulate, rest and
rejuvenate our bodies during the night,” she says.
But short of sleeping the night in a department store, or
the three bears’ house, how can we get our mattress choice
just right?
A good place to start is visiting the online bed selectors
offered by major manufacturers and retailers. These will
prompt you for your comfort preferences, sleeping positions
and issues and make recommendations to suit. Once you’re
more informed, it’s less daunting to visit the showroom
where a sleep specialist, like Allan Walton, will pepper you
with similar questions to narrow the selection to three or
four beds before you get to play Goldilocks.
“I would advise my customers that I will need them instore
for 45 minutes to an hour and to please come wearing
comfortable, loose-fitting clothing so that they can judge the
feel of the bed,” he says. “Try the bed in your main sleeping
position – for most of us it is on our side – and ensure the
pillow on the sample mattress is the correct height for you
and use this same pillow on all the mattress choices. Once
you have found a mattress that you like please spend 15
minutes lying on it in the showroom.”
be at the top
of my list.
Wallace Cotton’s new Lisbon Duvet Set.
Pillow talk
Leading hotels are genuinely on to something when
they offer a pillow menu. Our experts all agree the
right pillow loft (or height) and support to suit different
sleeping positions is as vital to a good night’s sleep
as your mattress, and a simple way to avoid spinal
problems and nervous system agitation. (See Which
pillow?) As for pillow fill, Dr Fairest recommends natural
fibres as they allow us to breathe better. Synthetic
fibres aren’t great for our airways, she says, and can
contribute to excess sweating as well as other health
hazards. A lot of natural fibres are also hypoallergenic
for those with allergies.
Which pillow?
Different sleeping positions require different lofts
for optimal head and spine alignment. The NZ
Chiropractors’ Association’s Dr Cassandra Fairest
recommends:
Back sleepers: Generally considered to be the best
position alignment-wise as not as much neck support is
necessary; need the lower side of a firm ‘contour’ pillow.
Side sleepers: Good for posture and spinal health, while
pregnant, and for anyone who tends to snore when on
their back. To support the neck in a neutral position
(nose approximately in the centreline of the body)
choose firm, higher pillows (try latex or foam).
Stomach sleepers: Best suited to a soft, lower pillow
(good options: synthetic, wool-fibre, feather and down).
Not recommended if you have any lower back pain, as
it puts the lumbar spine into extension.
Combination sleepers: Contour pillows that offer a
high and low side are great, but unless you’re going to
flip the pillow around every time you turn over, they’re
not that much use! A medium-height pillow that allows
for any position is probably the most appropriate.
Going topless
Like it or loathe it, we are slowly but surely
adopting the European way of dispensing with a
top sheet and just having the duvet cover next
to the skin, says Deb Hymers-Ross. This is good
for retailers as more duvet covers are required,
she says, but with most sheets in New Zealand
still sold as sets (with a redundant top sheet) it
can be an issue for customers. Also, single fitted
sheets are not currently readily available much
beyond classic white.
Use-by dates
You might be surprised to learn that, just like
your toothbrush and milk, your pillows have a
‘use by’ date. Generally they are past their best
within three years, only one year if synthetic,
because of the build-up of dust mites and mildew
and breakdown of the fibres that support our
heads, which weigh 4-5 kilos. When your pillows
no longer spring back into shape to fill the gap
between your shoulder and head or you’re
waking up with a stiff neck, it’s time to replace
them, says Dr Fairest.
For mattresses, she says a good rule of thumb
is to consider replacing it after 10 years. If you’re
waking with spinal pain or your bed has rolltogether
it’s time to look at a replacement. And
perhaps book an assessment with a chiropractor.
Texture range features
fibres in styles like the
Finch and Aviana. For
a pop of colour, top
your duvet cover with
Cover is 100% organic
cotton, crafted in a
jacquard seersucker
Be gentle
Quality bedding doesn’t come cheap so look
after your investment. Both mattresses and
pillows will last longer and be healthier fitted with
protectors. Give your pillow a good shake daily
to fluff it up and kill any dust mites. Check the
label to see if it can be gently machine-washed.
“The importance of a mattress protector
shouldn’t be underestimated,” says Allan Walton,
citing studies showing that after five years, up
to half the weight of an unprotected mattress is
made up of bodily fluids, skin cells, bacteria and
mould. Ick! Also heed the manufacturer’s advice
on how often to rotate your mattress to extend
its lifespan.
Air your bed by removing all linen and
protectors and vacuum the mattress regularly to
prevent any dust from settling into the fibres.
As for feathers and down duvets, M.M. Linen’s
Kerry Jackson advises a duvet inner should be
aired at least monthly. “Just hang it outside on a
clear sunny day or just inside your windows in
the winter. It is also good to give it a good shake
weekly for maximum lofting and warmth. They
can be hand-washed or gentle machine-washed
but must be rinsed well, and then line dried.”

TOP 10 ON TOUR
Architect Richard Dalman takes us on a journey around the
South Island where the key pit stops are designed to induce awe.
Image: University of Canterbury
UC Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences Building.
My cousin Didi is coming to New Zealand from Holland
and has booked a typical bus tour throughout the
country. You know the type – one town, one day, then onto
the next. A bit like those European bus tours.
This got me thinking about architectural highlights that
could be checked out on such a tour, or perhaps on a
personalised Dalman architectural tour.
So, I’ve put together my own Top 10 buildings of
architectural quality or interest that could be seen on a round
trip from Christchurch, across to the West Coast, then back
up the east coast of the South Island.
1. Mathematics, Statistics and
Computer Sciences Building
On the way out west, visit the
University of Canterbury and check
out this building by Architectus. The
eastern façade reminds me of buildings
by American architect Louis Kahn, and
is separated from the glazed eastern
façade that overlooks the river, by a
central atrium space.

beautiful, and the view out to the bush and
spiritual.
Creating the perfect path
A path’s purpose is not just in its functionality,
but in the definition, structure and style it adds
to areas around your home.
Planning your Path
To create a pathway, you first need to decide its purpose
and where you plan to lead people. The most common
reason for creating a path is practicality. A practical path
leads to locations such as clotheslines, vegetable gardens,
wood piles, barbeque areas, or garden sheds, and provides
access to the home. A path may have aesthetic properties,
but its main purpose may be to stop mud being tramped
into the home from a well-beaten track.
Path Material
Choosing the right material and pathway style for your
garden involves several factors, including the volume of
traffic, your budget and the style of your garden. Popular
path styles include stone mulch, paving, stepping-stones
and concrete. With so many products and options on the
market there is no need for your path to just be a ‘path’; it
can also become a design feature and a talking point in
your landscape.
STONES: Stone mulch paths are the most cost-effective
option. Select a decorative stone type that will complement
other features in the garden. Consider the shape and size
of the stone you select; pathways that get a lot of summer
foot traffic will need smooth, round stones for bare feet.
PAVERS: If you want the “wow” factor, we recommend laying
pavers. With a huge range of pavers available, including
stone, schist and granite, you can be assured of having
a path that looks great and stands the test of time.
STEPPING STONES: These are suited to most situations
and are a versatile option. Create a functional and
attractive path by combining stone mulch and pavers for
a stepping stone look.
CONCRETE: With so many colours and finishing options
available, a concrete path can enhance your overall
landscaping and doesn’t need to look plain. The great thing
about concrete paths is that there is no chance for weeds
to grow, and little to no maintenance is required.
For help in selecting and installing the right path for your
property, the Oderings Landscaping team are just a phone
call away. Call or email us now to book your free measure
SEASONAL
CHANGE
Trends in the garden come and go as our tastes for certain
palettes and plants change with the years.
STYLE | landscaping 107
Like a lot of other disciplines, landscape design
is subject to changes in fashion over years
and decades. I always find it fascinating to visit a
Christchurch garden built 30 or 40 years ago and see
what the designer was drawing back then.
Gardens were often highlighted with curved
paths, and perfectly laid out red brick paving in
concentric circles. They were typically planted with
lots of flowering azaleas, rhodos and the occasional
introduction of a native pittosporum. Some had
sizeable areas of gravel with a slight nod to a
Japanese aesthetic. The outdoor spaces were often a
lot smaller with a real intimate, ‘plant-rich’ feel.
Such gardens sit in strong contrast to most of what
we see being designed today. The modern approach
features harder, straight lines with higher native plant
content and more expansive hard surfaces. Today’s
garden designers could take a little inspiration from
our predecessors’ work and try incorporating a few
more curves into our contemporary layouts.
In Europe, contemporary garden design is still
being influenced by the likes of Dutch landscape
architect Piet Oudolf and the ‘New Perennial’
movement (naturalistic planting). As seen in the
urban Lurie Garden in Chicago, a wide range of
new and old flowering perennials are being superbly
blended with tall grasses, creating large, sprawling,
romantic-looking meadow plantings.
Flowers have been somewhat out of step with
garden design in Canterbury for some time now.
Perhaps this coming season we’ll see a swing towards
more flowering perennials.
THE QUEEN OF FLOWERS
One of the flowers due for a comeback is the
rose. Cantabrians like the odd white ‘Iceberg’
or ‘Margaret Merril’, but, as a whole, we don’t
branch out much further than that.
A trip to the rose garden at the Botanic
Gardens in summer reveals a kaleidoscope of
colour and crowds of admirers taking photos,
sniffing scents and taking in the beauty of the
crowned ‘queen of flowers’.
Probably my favourite find last time I visited
was Rosa ‘Lemon ‘N Lime’ – a floribunda
with good disease resistance and, as its name
suggests, soft lemon blooms with tinges of green.
If you wanted to give a rose a go again, try
choosing a grafted standard rose (so you don’t
have to bend down to it). Explore the massive
range of colour, shape and scent at your local
garden centre or grower – you’re sure to find
something you find quite beautiful to take pride
of place in a sunny spot at your place.
FASHIONABLE ART
The rise to stardom of Chinese
designer Guo Pei came, in part,
on the heels of Rihanna. In 2015,
when the Met Gala’s theme was
‘China: Through the Looking Glass’,
Rihanna’s people stumbled upon
Guo and a cape first worn on a
catwalk in 2012. Weighing 25kg
and stretching five-metres long, the
model didn’t make it to the end
of the runway. However, three
years later, Rihanna didn’t miss a
step. Featuring 50,000 hours’ worth
of hand embroidery, it took two
years to make this dress, which
currently forms part of an exhibition
at Singapore’s Asian Civilisation’s
Museum (until 15 September).
Italian designer Gaetano Pesce (79) has been busy
marking 50 years since his Up5 armchair was first
was not met with glee from feminists (who saw it
promoting violence against women as opposed to
a critique of patriarchy), the true-to-form room-size
version is being rolled out in a limited-edition beige
Beauty pays. Well, for the likes of Françoise
a ranking her mother, Liliane Bettencourt,
Worth US$55.6 billion, Françoise and her
from the company’s success that, just last year,
saw her bank balance increase by $7.1 billion.
Officially L’Oreal heiress following the death of
her 94-year-old mother two years ago, she is
also president of the philanthropic Bettencourt
WHY, HELLO THERE,
MERCEDES
Kate Preece finds herself talking to her car.
They say madness is not talking to yourself, but when
you start responding. But, with technology becoming
cleverer with every upgrade, it becomes acceptable to
have open dialogue with inanimate objects, right?
Ask the Mercedes-Benz A200 what the speed limit
is and she’ll tell you. Ask her to turn on a reading light,
the front window heating, the heated seats, and she’ll
do so instantly. Once you find yourselves on the same
wavelength, you’re away laughing.
“Hey Mercedes, what’s the temperature?”
“The outside temperature is 15 degrees.”
“Hey, Mercedes, call Gran.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t know your grandmother’s name yet.”
She’s smart alright.
This new Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX)
and its ‘Natural Voice Control’ accompanies the latest
update, first rolled out in the top S-Class models last
year. It includes a touchscreen dashboard that spreads
like an elongated tablet from in front of the steering
wheel to the centre position, with two 10.25-inch digital
screens. From here you can control everything from
colour themes, to your car’s climate. Further controls
on the steering wheel are small square touch sensors
that you can swipe over to change your display. Flick
through options that show consumption, trip details, your
navigation, a Nm/G-force dial, analogue clock and more.
Too much? Simplify back to full-screen graphic detailing
your trip itinerary, with an icon to show how far your fuel
will take you. (If you’d rather keep your eyes on the road,
ask Mercedes, she’ll tell you too.)

FASHION FACT:
Mercedes-Benz has been tied to
the fashion industry for 22 years.
As the title sponsor for Mercedes-
desire for style, innovative design
sees the headlights gradually light up
your path, from the ground up. The
Multibeam LED headlights see 18
LEDs adjust the light distribution to
suit the setting.
Something I hadn’t encountered
with a cruise control offering was an
automatic slowing for corners. The
car, in conjunction with its navigation
system, decides if the speed it’s set
to is appropriate for the upcoming
bend. A particular part of the Akaroa
Highway tested this out perfectly, as
a 100kmh straight ends with a bend
to the right. Once out of the bend,
the car speeds up to meet the preestablished
limit – handy, though you
still have to keep your wits about you.
So focused was it to returning to said
speed, it seemed unlikely to make the
45kmh turn that followed soon after.
Converted SUV drivers will have
long forgotten what it feels like to
be this close to the ground. Yes, it’s
a sedan, people. But it adds to that
sleek, fashionable look for another
Mercedes hit. Just ask Mercedes.
A NEW SEASON
FOR EATING
Noteworthy places to eat and drink this spring.
Words Vanessa Ortynsky
Sandfly Café
En route to Milford Sound? Make sure to stop in Te Anau for one of
the best breakfasts in the area. Sandfly Café (9 The Lane) is a cosy spot
that serves up an excellent espresso alongside breakfasts, light meals
and the best caramel slices; perfect to keep you going on your road
trip. Either grab a seat outside on the lawn or head inside to enjoy the
quirky interior (with free Wi-Fi, we might add). With a large selection of
breakfast options from standard eggs and bacon to vegan and vegetarian
dishes galore, everyone will leave satisfied.
West End Stories
The sleek West End Stories on Cambridge Terrace is our go-to for
flawless breakfast and lunch options in the heart of the city. The elegant
restaurant and café is favoured among nearby office workers, locals
and tourists alike. With a seasonal menu that changes regularly, you’re
always in store for a tasty feed. We fawn over their Mediterranean
omelette, which is packed full of veges and cheese or the muesli served
with berries. It’s also worth noting that the plant-filled interior here is a
gorgeous space in which to recharge over an hour or two.
Fiddler’s Green Vineyard & Bistro
Open since June and steered by head chef,
Viv van den Bosch, Fiddler’s Green Vineyard
& Bistro (246 Georges Rd, Amberley) is
quickly becoming a Waipara Valley favourite.
On the menu, expect a combination of
European-inspired dishes and tasty Kiwi
favourites like their market fish, which is
pan-fried with ginger and served on pickled
winter vegetables with a sesame seaweed
topping. The French pastries are definitely
worth trying as well. Then, of course, be sure
to sample their selection of wines.
WINE NOTES
Throw caution to the wind with these whimsical wines.
Words Kate Preece
Hello Sailor Swanky
Pinot Noir Rosé 2017
When the word “swanky” is
incorporated into the label and the
wine description, you can expect to
be sipping something that doesn’t
take itself too seriously. The newest
addition to the Giesen Group, it
has a warm apricot-pink glow and
is beautifully crisp when served
straight from the fridge. Super fruity
– priming us for a sweet summer
ahead – but far from sweet, it’s a
good match for salmon or a good
hunk of camembert. $19.99
Giesen Riesling Blush
If you don’t know what you’ve been
poured, it’s a sweet rosé you’re
thinking about as you sip this cheeky
wine. Described as medium, and
dry, it pours like silk from the bottle
and fills a glass with an alluring
apricot-pink. Thick on the mouth
it doesn’t fail to deliver in flavour –
blood orange and lime for starters.
It’s amazing what a splash of syrah
can do to a riesling. Very cheerful
and cheap, at $12.99.
Lost Garden
Chardonnay 2018
In a colour aptly described by one at
our table as “see-through dandelion”,
this golden number has a lot to say for
itself. On the nose, tropical fruits came
through, but it’s that first taste that
will take you on the most wonderful
journey. I discovered a surprising
sense of sweetness, which progressed
through to that dry tannin-induced
finish. Though described as boasting
oak and spice, it was more the peach
that dominated this truly fruity number.
Easy drinking, it might just turn a
riesling drinker to chardonnay. $29.99
