Pavers brighten Bishopdale
• By Claire Booker
BISHOPDALE VILLAGE Mall
was in dire need of a bit of a
spruce up.
So a group of locals joined
forces to form the Bishopdale
Beautification Project group.
Now, the path, water fountain
and planting on the new village
green are complete.
The path is orange and yellow
– the colours of Bishopdale
Village Mall, it curves through
the village green and is lined by
flowering cherry trees.
Lindsay Dell, of the Enliven
Bishopdale Group, is one of the
members of the BBP, and he
hoped the way the community
has been involved could be a
good model for other groups in
the city.
The project is led by the city
council, but run by the community,
with multiple organisations
being involved and local businesses
offering resources for the
project.
The project has been funded
by the Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board,
which granted $10,000 for
improvements in the mall late
last year.
This grant is set to be used by
multiple community groups to
fund a number of projects.
Mr Dell said the group isn’t
concerned about potential graffiti
or vandalism in the space.
“If you’re worried about what
might go wrong, you’d never get
out of bed,” he said.
The collaboration of multiple
community groups and local
businesses to provide resources
and volunteers has meant more
will be achieved with the available
finance.
Group member Bill
Greenwood was pleased with the
community involvement in the
project.
“The Bishopdale Village Green
path now provides a colourful
link between the mall and
library,” Mr Greenwood said.
The group was helped by some
Burnside and Waimairi tennis
players, Riccarton and Christchurch
Sunrise Rotary members
and the Bishopdale MeNZ shed.
Mr Greenwood said workers
from Allied Concrete played
a big role in the path, the two
members that poured the concrete,
David Baker and Mike
Smith gave their time freely,
and spent an extra two hours
applying a non-slip coating to
the path.
The next part of the project
is to paint a mural on the large
brick wall behind the village
green.
Resene will sponsor the paint
for the mural, and local schools
will paint panels as part of the
mural.
Isleworth School, Emmanuel
Christian School, Casebrook and
Breens Intermediate schools and
Papanui High have expressed
interest in being a part of the
project.
Chris Coles, community
development worker at the Bishopdale
Community Trust said
he is excited about the first stage
nearing completion.
“When we originally came
up with the plans I had no
idea it would look so good and
transform the feel of the space so
significantly. The colours of the
path in particular really brighten
up the area – it’s noticeable even
on an overcast day,” he said.
Once the mural is complete,
the group will work towards
repainting the seats around the
mall and adding more features
to the village green.
