COSTAS BATTERED BY
SEPTEMBER STORMS
BUILDINGS destroyed, roads
closed, severe flooding, cars
washed away, trees being
blown over and tens of thousands
of kids told to stay away
from school were among the
issues as the red and orange
storm alerts from the Met Office
proved to be devastatingly
accurate this week.
There was plenty of rain, but
by Simon Russell
the wind caused much of the
damage with an entire wall of
the Municipal Sports Centre
in Denia being knocked down
early on Thursday morning as
what was described as a tornado
passed through the Marina
Alta town.
Trucks were blown over,
The Sports Centre in Denia was among the dozens of damaged buildings
trees blocked roads and windows
were blown out of buildings
while the roof of the fish
market, now a museum, was
badly damaged.
The local police in the town
were called out to over 50 incidents
at the height of the
storm, fallen trees being the
main reason but also snapped
electricity cables, trapped ve-
hicle and damaged buildings
among others.
Javea experienced an incredible
100 litres of rainfall in
the period from midnight until
9am on Thursday morning
with winds reaching 108 kmph,
among the highest ever recorded
there while the Marina Alta
area took much of the brunt of
the damage.
Most towns in the region took
the decision to close schools
while the storms were raging,
heeding their own advice to
avoid non-essential journeys.
This signalled a disruptive
start to the new school year
and for parents who found their
children back home just three
days after the long summer
break ended.
While thankfully there are
no reports at this stage of any
fatalities or serious injuries,
the region will once again be
counting the cost of more devastating
weather, just a few
months after the Easter floods.
Many towns and beaches are
still awaiting repairs from the
storms of two winters ago and
will be keeping their fingers
crossed that this winter will not
see any more of the same.
Another unhappy bunch will
be the tens of thousands of people
who have travelled over to
the area on holiday hoping for
some late summer sun. Ironically
the weather in most of the
UK this week has been unseasonably
warm and sunny.
The nest was found
stood little chance of
survival on the busy
province, so they
were carefully collected
and transferred to the
foundation.
The babies started
hatching at the end of
August and were sustaining
themselves on
the yolk of the egg as
they would in the wild.
They were transferred
FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 3
New ambassador
goes to court
Finance Feature
provided by...
Are you Brexit prepared?
by Simon Russell
KING Felipe last week officially received
Britain’s new ambassador
in the royal courts, a ceremony
deep in tradition including the ambassadors
traditional 19th century
state uniform that only a handful of
dignitaries are permitted to wear.
The new man in the job, Hugh Elliot,
is very familiar with Spain and
its culture, and has a Spanish wife
who he met while he was teaching
in Salamanca University back in the
1990s.
Both the King and Mr Elliot are
well aware of the looming Brexit and
the fact that the UK is the biggest
single investor in Spain, not to mention
the 300,000 Britons living here
and the 200,000 Spaniards in the UK.
Funerals are no laughing matter, says bishop
JULIAN Ruiz Martorell, the
bishop of Huesca, has written
a decree about the celebrations
at funerals in his
diocese.
This includes limiting music
played to that within the
Christian canon - so no My
Way or Always look on the
Bright Side of Life then (the
UK’s favourite, apparently).
by Simon Russell
The bishop also wants to
stop the practice of reading out
farewell letters or thank you
letters, biographical speeches
and various other modern day
practices.
He said “Christian funerals
should clearly reflect the Easter
meaning of the Christian’s
death (where eternal life follows)”
and should not be seen
as a final goodbye or heartbreaking
experience.
However the practice is not
as widespread as in the UK,
where the most common sendoff
songs played also include
“Angels” by Robbie Williams
and, bizarrely, the Match of
the Day theme tune.
It has certainly been the most talked
about subject in years, and as expats
we have lived through some worrying
times. The lack of clear guidance and
information has been a huge frustration,
but Chorus have ensured we’ve been
on the front line. Every month for the
last 2 years, Chorus have been on the
Brexpats in Spain advisory panel at the
British Consulate Brexit meetings, so
have had first-hand information from
the British Consulate and Ambassador
on how best to prepare.
Both the British and Spanish
governments have given clear advice
on the best way to ensure a smooth
transition for British expats in Spain,
and I wanted to use this article to pass
on as much of that information as
possible.
1. GET LEGAL
Make sure that if your intention is to
live in Spain more than 183 days, you
are resident (you might know this as the
green card or green paper, depending
upon when you took it out). This is the
No.1 piece of advice given by both the
UK and Spanish governments.
2. PAY YOUR TAXES
CORRECTLY
The rules on this are pretty simple, if
you live here, and are resident here
then you should pay your taxes on your
worldwide income in Spain. Many
people put this off simply because they
are not aware of the implications and
may believe they’ll be worse off. If you
have any doubts, get expert advice.
3. STAY CORRECTLY INFORMED
Don’t rely on information from friends
or neighbours. Go straight to the source
of information, my advice would be
to follow the governments website –
www.gov.uk/livinginspain here you
will find up to date information, and
also have the chance to register for
email alerts should anything change.
4. GET A SPANISH DRIVING
LICENCE
If you are a Spanish resident, then you
should have a Spanish driving licence.
Failure to do so could result in fines,
and in the result of a no deal Brexit
could even mean that your UK licence
would be invalid in Spain.
5. ENSURE THAT YOUR
FINANCES ARE IN ORDER
Pensions – most importantly, don’t
fall for scare-mongering! Sadly, many
firms in my industry are using Brexit
as a ruse to convince people to make
inappropriate pension transfers, often
to overseas jurisdictions. It’s incredibly
unlikely, under any scenario, that Brits
will lose access to their pensions. What
is a concern is that if you are living
in Spain, you should always have a
locally regulated adviser and hold
an appropriate pension product. We
also don’t know if pension freedoms,
which were introduced following EU
legislation, may exist in their same
form after Brexit. Now may be the time
to see what potential benefits could
be available from your existing UK
pensions.
Investments - If you are becoming a
legal resident in Spain, you should
also be aware that it is unlikely that
your UK financial adviser will have
the appropriate license to give ongoing
advice to you as a Spanish resident.
Equally as important, they may not
have the appropriate knowledge of
Spanish tax law, and Spanish compliant
products, to be able optimise your
finances and taxation moving forward.
It is so important to ensure you are
holding investment products designed
for Spanish resident, rather than those,
like ISAs, UK platforms etc, that are
designed for UK tax payers. Getting
this wrong can result in you overpaying
Newborn found in bin
A MAN scavenging rubbish
container bins in Alicante
City was shocked to
discover the corpse of a
newborn baby in one, and
immediately contacted the
authorities.
The sad find was made in the
Pla neighbourhood on Monday
and several National Police officers
attended the scene.
The baby still had its umbilical
cord attached and had
probably been dead for a few
hours said a spokesman.
The corpse has been transferred
to the cities Medical
Forensic Institute where an
Valencia has been
named as the World
Capital of Design for
in India to the post.
The steering committee
of the World Design
Organisation (WDO) have
paid visits to the city and
made the final decision
this Monday.
The designation is an
architectural one (not
fashion) based on the cities
transformation over
by Simon Russell
the years and awareness
of how design affects ordinary
people when done
2022 will now see a
packed programme of
events throughout the year
which the city council and
WDO will now start developing.
Recent holders of
The discovery was said
to have caused a stir in the
area, a busy and up-market
place close to the MARQ Archaeological
Museum.
Shoplifting
spree
TWO MEN who stole perfumes
and sunglasses
worth 37 thousand euros
from an Alicante-Elche
airport shop have been
arrested by the Guardia
Civil.
The Lithuanians, aged 29
and 31, targeted the store
and stole from it twice, helping
themselves to 225 bottles
of perfume worth 28 thousand
euros, and then returning
another day to take 35
sunglasses valued at nearly
nine thousand euros.
The crooks would buy
cheap air tickets online using
fake identities and different
bank cards, and once they
had printed out the boarding
cards, they would cancel the
trip to get a refund.
The passes gave them access
to the “airside” area of
by Alex Trelinski
the airport and the shop they
wanted to steal from.
Guardia officers ploughed
through video footage to confirm
that it was the same
duo that had struck on both
occasions, and they saw
them drive away from the
airport each time after their
plunder.
The Guardia launched an
operation over several evenings,
based on the time of
the two occasions that the
men had struck before, and
eventually they popped up
again to presumably do some
more stealing.
They were detained, with
one of them being the subject
of a European Arrest Warrant
issued against him by
Austrian authorities.
Mobile racket
A BIG GANG that robbed
at least 32 mobile phone
shops across Spain, including
outlets in Alicante
Province and the
Murcia region, has been
busted by the National
Police, after a two year
investigation.
by Alex Trelinski
Eleven arrests were made
in Spain, in an international
operation in conjunction
with Europol and Romania’s
internal ministry,
with people also detained
in Romania, France, Italy
and Sweden. Twenty-three
towns and cities were hit by
the thieves in Spain, including
Elche, Gandia, Santa
Pola, Murcia, Cartagena,
and Elda.
The value of the phones,
that were always stolen
during the night, amounted
to over 700 thousand
euros, and they would
then be shipped over to
Romania, either with the
gang members, or posted
in parcels.
Police say inquiries are
continuing with further
arrests not being ruled out.
Stabbed after
knocking on
neighbours door
A MAN who went to his
neighbours apartment to
tell him he could see water
leaking from his property
was stabbed several
times with a pair of scissors,
suffering a serious
stomach wound.
The police were alerted
to the assault last Wednesday
morning and found the
27 year old victim who told
by Simon Russell
them that his neighbour has
said “he was going to kill
him”.
They arrested the alleged
perpetrator, a 45 year old
Spanish national with a
lengthy police record.
He has been provisionally
charged with attempted
murder and assault.
Celebrating local food
OLIVA is holding the
town’s XII Mostra Gastronomic
this month, a celebration
of Valencian and
Olivense gastronomy.
From the 16 to 19 September
the town’s schools will be
visiting the indoor market
where the students will be
by Simon Russell
guided around and able to
sample various foods.
Sunday 20 September is
World Paella Day and to
mark this occasion, chefs
will be making a giant paella
from 8pm on Paseig
Lluis Vives. The next day
there is the stuffed pepper
making competition, a typical
local dish. This is from
9.30 to 12.00 at the indoor
market.
Next Sunday (28 September)
is the figatell competition,
from 8.30pm at the
market, these being another
very traditional dish in the
area.
closures
Galicia burns
FIREFIGHTERS backed by
over a dozen aircraft battled
forest blazes raging in
Spain’s northwestern region
of Galicia at the end
of last week.
The fires cut motorways
and forced the evacuation of
several villages,
Fanned by strong winds
by Alex Trelinski
amid hot and dry weather,
the wildfires destroyed over
500 hectares of forest.
In October 2017, Galicia
suffered from a wave of deadly
wildfires that were fanned
by gusty, shifting winds and
killed at least four people.
SANTANDER Bank has announced
the closure of a
dozen branches in the Valencia
and Murcia regions
in the first phase of of plan
to eventually shutdown
1,150 branches across the
country.
The bank declared the
first deck of 86 closures
last Friday, as it plans to
slash just over 3,700 jobs,
or around 11 per cent of its
workforce.
The measures are part of
by Alex Trelinski
Santander’s wider strategy
to focus on cost savings in
Surprise neighbours
by Alex Trelinski
A SEVILLA area home
owner got more than he
bargained for when workers
building an extension
at his house uncovered a
Roman burial chamber in
his garden.
José Avilés from the town
of Carmona was shocked
when the ancient graveyard
structure surfaced whilst
workmen were lowering the
ground level and demolishing
part of a broken wall.
It has been described as A historical expert found and protected by a lead outer the plans for his house extension
so as to incorporate
a hole of around a metre eight niches with the chamber,
six of which contained were engraved with what the ancient structure as a
Cutting the cord
by Alex Trelinski
A MAN from the Catalunya
region has lost his claim
against his parents, who
refused to give him money.
A Barcelona judge ruled
that “relatives cannot be expected
to maintain the illusions
or expectations” of someone
who is an adult.
The unnamed 24-year-old
was told that he “should accept
responsibility for his decisions”,
after wanting his parents
to pay his food bills after
he decided to return to college.
The court heard that when
his parents separated, thethen
teenager spent time in
both his parents homes and
on turning 18 he got a grant to
go on a course, but had spent
the money instead on a tattoo.
His parents told him off,
and he then moved in with his
grandparents who have supported
him since.
The man´s view was that
since he had returned to college,
his parents and not his
grandparents should shoulder
the cost.
The law in Spain says that
parents are not automatically
absolved of legal obligation to
support their offspring beyond
the age of 18, but are expected
to do so if they are unable to
support themselves during
full time study or while job
seeking, providing they can
prove that they are incapable
of supporting themselves.
Like in the matter of the
24-year-old, individual situations
can end up being judged
on a case-by-case basis.
Mosquito summer
by Simon Russell
RESIDENTS and visitors to
Elche have said that the
mosquitoes this summer
have been the worst in living
memory, both for sheer
numbers and the ferocity
of their bites.
The town centre and the
Hondo, El Altet and Arenales
areas have all been badly
affected and poor fumigation
by the government has been
partly blamed.
However the heavy rains
in August followed by the
return of more warm muggy
weather also formed a perfect
late summer habitat for
the creatures.
Many of them are the more
virulent tiger mosquitoes and
their appearance has prompted
the abandonment of sports
events, near emptying of
beaches and people being
forced to keep their windows
shut despite the heat.
Elche council has said it is
looking into the problem but
conceded that when it was at
its height in August “nothing
ever gets done.”
Cars to be banned
THE proposed redevelopment
plans for Valencia’s
Plaza Ayuntamiento
include the banning of
private vehicles, the initial
report this week has
shown.
Along with Plaza Reina
this is Valencia’s most important
square, well known
for its flower stalls and fountains
in the heart of the old
by Simon Russell
town.
The €400,000 facelift has
yet to be signed off and there
are a number of different
proposals on the table.
However it appears that
the council is keen to ban
private traffic in the area,
excluding local residents and
deliveries.
THE National Police have
arrested four people in
the Los Montesinos area,
as part of an operation
against the exploitation
of people working in agriculture
in the Vega Baja
region.
The main detainee was
a 58-year-old Ecuadorian
man, who employed and exploited
workers by forcing
by Alex Trelinski
them to work long hours;
giving them no contracts;
and charging them extortionate
rates to qualify for
social security and health
insurance.
Police tracked the man´s
movements and the way
he operated, and early one
morning he picked up 15
workers at a regular meeting
point in Orihuela, and
the workers were to be
taken to work in various
fields.
Authorities had by then
meeting point was, and
they arrested the Ecuadorian
when he and the unregistered
labourers arrived in
Lucky escape
MASSIVE LAND DEAL
AN 80-year-old woman
suffered just minor injuries
after her car turned
over on a Torrevieja road
last Friday night.
The incident happened
at the junction of Calle
Orihuela and the Ricardo
Lafuente roundabout at
11.15pm, after the driver
SAN FULGENCIO´S local police
made an unusual seizure recently,
as they took away three adult
Greek Turtles from a property in
the municipality.
The turtles are a protected and
endangered species, and are found
across southern Spain and North Africa.
by Alex Trelinski
lost control of her car, which
then lit a lamppost, and then
overturned.
The carriageway heading
towards Avenida de Cortes
Valencianas was blocked for
30 minutes, as firefighters
freed her from her vehicle.
by Alex Trelinski
They can live up to an average of
125 years, with some unconfirmed
reports suggesting that 200 years has
been achieved.
The turtles are being looked after
by a vet at the Species Recovery Centre
at Santa Faz in Alicante.
THE TORREVIEJA-BASED TM Real
Estate Group has spent 30 million
euros on buying a third of the last
large available area of land available
for property development in the city.
TM has bagged part of the old farmland
at La Hoya between the San Luis-El
Chaparral urbanisation and the
N-332, with the company planning to
building two thousand homes.
La Hoya has the capacity for 7,490
properties on an area of nearly two million
square metres, and is the largest
piece of developable land in Alicante
Province.
Despite approval for the land to be
built on a decade ago by the Valencian
government, nothing has happened
due to the recession as well as a whole
series of legal hitches and changes, including
an environmental impact study
concerning the adjoining natural park.
TM had hoped to start building work
earlier this year, but final changes
need to be made in regard to environmental
issues to satisfy Valencian government
rules.
to be installed on the Orihuela Costa
Orihuela´s environment councillor,
in Playa Flamenca, in addition to
six other locations in the municipality.
FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 13
Business & Money
Don’t break the law
as a landlord in spain
If you only live for part
of the year on the Costa
Blanca in your property,
then an excellent way of
boosting your income is
to rent out your home for
tourists, at Sun Lawyers
they can tell you exactly
how this can be done.
The big point is that it
must be done legally by getting
a Tourist License from
the Valencian government,
and since it can be a complex
bit of business, we can act on
your behalf in applying for
the tourist license.
Crucially, if you are renting
out and do not have a license,
then you are breaking
the law, and inspectors are
checking on websites where
properties are being advertised
and have not registered
with the authorities.
There have been many reports
of this happening, so
don´t gamble by being an illegal
landlord.
It is compulsory for all holiday
lets to be registered, and
that´s why we at Sun Lawyers
can sort everything out
for you, and you are left with
no nasty surprises, and the
possibility of fines and legal
action being taken because
you are illegally letting out
your property.
To keep it brief, the Valencian
regional rules say that
“tourist rentals are properties
of any type that are rented
out regularly in exchange
for money, with immediate
availability, and with the aim
of fulfilling accommodation
needs for tourism, holidays,
or leisure”.
There are different gradings
for the type of property
that you let out, namely Superior,
Premier, and Standard
but the Sun Lawyers
team can cut through all the
red tape and get the right
documentation and permissions
for what you have.
You will also have to pay
tax on the rental income that
you get, but we will sort that
aspect out for you, and then
you can get the money coming
in, and you can sit back
and relax wherever you are
living!
Sun Lawyers will take you
through the stages that you
need to get the Tourist License:
1. Give you an assessment
of your property and
what you exactly need.
2. Apply to the Town Hall
for the compatibility
certificate
3. After obtaining the
compatibility certificate,
we will apply
to the local government
to get the rental
license.
There is a lot to be done,
which may not seem obvious
at first hand, but again we at
Sun Lawyers will be across
every single aspect.
The landlord personally
needs to:
1. Apply for the property
registration number
which you will use to
advertise your rental.
For example, if you are
renting out your property,
you will have to put up a sign
close to the front door, with
the registration number on
it.
If you take a booking, then
you must get some internet
access codes from the police,
so that you can fill in the details
of the guests that will be
staying.
The laws on Tourist Rentals
also demand a certain
standard of accommodation
for what you are letting out
in terms of the description
and the category like Standard
that me mentioned
earlier.
An added twist as well is
that different standards also
apply if you want to let out a
property in a rural area!
There are clearly many potential
pitfalls if you try and
go through all the different
stages of getting a Tourist
License on your own, which
is where we at Sun Lawyers
come in.
We have years of dealing
with such matters across the
Costa Blanca, and our friendly
English-speaking lawyers
will do everything necessary
to make sure that you have
complete piece of mind.
Keeping your holiday letting
under the radar is not a
good idea, and don´t listen to
people offering you an easy
fix at your local bar, or just
giving you the wrong details
and bad advice.
Trust us at Sun Lawyers
to act on your behalf, in the
knowledge that everything
will be done to the letter of
the law, which is what we are
in business for.
Don´t plough on without
the right advice and experts
behind you, and touch base
with us straight away!
THE SPANISH cabinet, under
meeting last Thursday to
discuss preparations for
a no-deal Brexit, which
currently still sees the
UK leave the EU without a
deal on October 31st.
Amidst the dramatic political
moves in Britain over
the last fortnight, Sanchez
presided over a gathering
of his ministers to pour over
all of the Brexit contingency
plans that were passed in
the Spanish parliament back
in March.
The session focused on the
rights of the 300 thousand
British nationals living in
Spain, and the 180 thousand
Spaniards residing in the UK.
It emerged that regional
governments like the one
covering Valencia will now
get more involved in Brexit
contingency plans.
Powers over matters such
as healthcare and education
are devolved to the regions,
by Alex Trelinski
and regional officials have
been called to a future meeting
of the Conference for EU-
Related Matters.
The Valencian regional
president, Ximo Puig, has
continually stated that access
to the healthcare system
will be maintained for
all British nationals irrespective
of whether a Brexit
deal is struck or not.
The respected El Pais
newspaper reported that Pedro
Sanchez had got a deal
Madrid
meeting
with ex-UK PM Theresa May
on rights for both Spaniards
and British nationals earlier
in the year, which would last
until the end of 2020. El Pais
also quoted Foreign Minister,
Josep Borrell, as saying that
changes to the contingency
plans could happen soon.
A more vexed issue for last
week’s cabinet session was
the matter of Gibraltar and
what happens at the border
if the UK crashes out of the
EU, especially with 28 thousand
people crossing it daily
to go to work.
Planes rotting away at Spanish airports
THERE are more than
a hundred aircraft that
have been on the ground
at airports across Spain
for more than a decade,
according to a trade
union report issued this
week.
Most of these have been effectively
abandoned, many by
airline that firms have gone
out of business, and are incurring
about 3 million euros
a year in costs.
The union has become involved
as they are concerned
about talks of breaking these
by Simon Russell
up on site, with environmental
damage and increased
health and safety risks for
their members.
Sabadell airport in Barcelona
has easily the most
with 35 abandoned hulks,
followed by Madrid and Valencia
which have 9 and 8.
Some have become tangled
in legal disputes while
others have been seized to
pay debts, such as the Jumbo
747 at Valencia airport
which was impounded after
the Spanish carrier Pronair
went bust a decade ago.
Attempts to auction the
massive purple plane failed
and the 747 is sitting on the
grass at the airport, depreciating
in value and condition
on a daily basis.
Probably the oldest plane is
the Douglas DC3 in Sabadell
airport.
These planes revolutionised
commercial air travel
making it affordable for
many for the first time - but
production of the DC3 ceased
in the mid 1940s.

You may have other questions too,
at night via moonlight, which, after all,
is reflected sunlight? To find out the
a pest
answer to these questions and a few
more, please read on.
GARDENERS looking to
protect their fruit and veg
are being warned to remain
vigilant against destructive
garden pests.
From aphids and caterpillars
to snails, the smallest
creatures can still pack a
punch when it comes to destroying
your much-loved
flowers and veg.
Often, it’s best to try and
prevent pest problems before
they occur, but if you are too
late there are still some options
to explore that don’t involve
chemical pesticides.
It can be really frustrating
and disheartening when you
find some of your prized crops
destroyed by common pests.
So here some common pests
to keep an eye out for as you’re
preening and pruning your
plants.
Aphids
These tiny critters have long
antennae and two little tubes
projecting rearward from
their abdomen. They like to
hang out on fruits, vegetables,
flowers and shaded trees and
suck plant sap, causing foliage
to distort and leaves to drop.
To control these bugs, wash
your plants with a strong
spray of water and if possible,
cover them with floating row
covers. You can also try applying
hot-pepper or garlic repellent
sprays and for severe
problems, apply horticultural
oil, insecticidal soap, or neem
oil.
Caterpillars
Caterpillars are soft, segmented
larvae with six legs in the
front and fleshy ‘false’ legs on
rear segments. You’ll often
find them munching through
a variety of fruits, vegetables
and plants. To deter them
apply floating row covers or
alternatively, hand-pick them
from the plants.
Slugs
Slugs are single-shelled, softbodied
animals that are persistent
and widespread pests.
They can cause damage on a
wide range of plants, munching
holes in leaves, stems,
flowers, tubers and bulbs.
Attract slugs and snails by
leaving out decaying organic
matter – inspect these after
dark.
You could also try using
copper rings around the base
of susceptible plants, and
sprinkle ashes, soot, sharp
sand, crushed nut of eggshells
around your precious plants to
provide a physical barrier that
slugs and snails don’t like to
cross.
Carrot root fly
It’s the larvae of the carrot fly
that are the major cause of
plant damage – as they move
through the soil feeding on
different roots, they can cause
widespread damage to crops.
Signs to check for are leaf discolouration,
and holes or tunnels
in the carrot.
You should check for damage
or infestation regularly
and choose growing sites that
are fairly open and exposed.
It’s also a good idea to companion
plant with a strongsmelling
vegetable to mask
the carrot smell, such as onions
or garlic.
Thin your seedlings in the
evening when adult flies are
less active and then destroy
all thinned plants. Remember
to firm the soil around the
plants after thinning as this
deters the flies from laying
eggs.
Birds
Birds such as pigeons can
cause major problems on edible
crops, removing leaves
and buds. This can happen
quickly with no visible culprit
as pigeons often feed in flocks
and target gardens early in
the morning when they’re less
likely to be disturbed.
The most effective way to
deal with pigeons is to prevent
them from reaching the crops
in the first place. As such, covering
your plants with netting
or fleece is a good idea but
make sure you stake or weight
down the edges. You could also
make items to scare the birds
– hang old CDs along wires to
flash sunlight and scare the
birds, or use aluminium cans
and similar items.

Getting the garden
of your dreams
TO a beginner, gardening
might feel like some kind
of rocket science.
Whether you have acres
of land at your disposal or
just a few square metres to
work with, it can be a daunting
task to tackle largely due
to the commitment and time
you have to invest.
These step-by-step tips will
cover the basics and have you
nursing a variety of plants,
flowers and vegetables in no
time.
A spokesman for BillyOh.
com, which compiled the
tips, says: “Not only does
gardening produce rewarding
results, it also gets you
outside in the fresh air and
helps to burn hundreds of
calories too. Simply follow
our step-by-step guide and
you’ll be nursing the garden
of your dreams in no time!”
Plan ahead
Before you even consider
heading out to buy new
plants and equipment, first
have a think about the bigger
picture and how you’d
eventually like your garden
to look. There are some great
gardening apps available
that will help you plan your
dream garden with ease.
When you have a strong
idea and you have the bulbs,
plants and seeds to hand,
place them all on to the soil
before planting them as
you’ll be able to move them
around until you’re happy
with the arrangement. This
is much easier than having
to dig up and replant them
afterwards!
Pick easy-togrow
plants
Although azaleas and orchids
look and smell amazing,
they’re notoriously difficult
to grow, so are no good
for a gardening novice.
Instead, opt for plants and
flowers that have a reputation
for being easy to grow
and care for.
Look for plants that come
in a variety of colours and
shapes, that are reliable, low
maintenance and will grow
quickly so you’ll be able to
reap the rewards sooner!
Soak the roots
By thoroughly soaking the
roots of a new plant before
putting it in the soil, you’ll
reduce the risk of getting dry
root balls.
Also make sure that the
hole is bigger than the root
ball before you plant it, as
a plant’s roots need to be
able to spread to get the best
chance of tapping into moisture
and absorbing the soil’s
natural nutrients.
Be gentle
Instead of yanking plants
from their pots by their
stems, gently squeeze the
sides of the pot and turn it
upside-down, using your oth-

at night via moonlight, which, after all,
answer to these questions and a few
more, please read on.
Charge your
home with the
power of the sun
er hand to catch it as it slides
out. Otherwise, you’re likely
to break or bruise them.
Give plants
space
Crowded plants are much
more susceptible to disease
and young plants often will
not survive if placed too close
together.
If they do manage to pull
through, they’ll need more
frequent watering and fertiliser
too, so make sure you
read each plant care label
carefully to find out how
much room they need.
Label, label,
label
As a gardening rookie, it can
be easy to forget exactly what
you’ve planted and where as
you might not be able to identify
plants and flowers easily
just from looking at them.
To avoid any confusion,
take some time to write a
plant label and pop it in the
ground next to the seeds,
bulbs or plants you’ve planted.
Most plants you buy will
come with a care label anyway
but they can get quickly
ruined being outdoors, so try
copying out the information
on to small strips of wood or
lollipop sticks that you can
stick in the ground instead.
Water, water,
water
Make sure you give young
plants plenty of water, but
avoid getting the plant’s
leaves wet! Wet leave can
quickly lead to mould, rot
and decay – which equate
to one sick plant! Be on the
lookout for yellow leave as
that means too much water!
Trim and prune
Trimming and pruning your
plants allows for increased air
circulation and fewer leaves
for you to spill water on.
It also keeps your plants
and flower looking neat and
pretty, instead of unkempt
and bedraggled.
Beware of
weeds
Weeds are a gardener’s
worst enemy – FACT! So,
make sure you get in to the
habit of weeding regularly.
Remember to remove
weeds along with their roots
to reduce the chance of them
re-growing, and if there are
seeds clinging to the weeds,
don’t put them in the compost
heap. You’ll just end up
re-seeding them when you
spread the compost!
Set reminders
Set up a dedicated calendar
so you’ll have an idea
of when to complete general
gardening tasks for each
plant throughout the year.
There are also some fantastic
mobile apps that have
virtual assistants to remind
you when to water, feed, and
prune your plants, so you
can have the garden of your
dreams.
Rio de Janeiro is the second
largest city in Brazil,
Rio used to be the Capital
city until April 1960 when
the honour was taken up
by the Brasilia, a new built
city in the Highlands of
Brazil.
Famous for it’s beaches of
Copacabana and Ipanema,
the Rio de Janeiro is also
known for it’s world famous
statue of Christ the Redeemer,
located overlooking the
city. Built between 1922 and
1931, the statue is a towering
30 meters high and 28 me-
ters wide and was built as a
symbol of Christianity.
The best way to visit the
monument is by Cog Train,
which winds up through the
green foliage of the Tijuka
Natural park, offering stunning
scenery offering views
of the city in it’s wake. The
by Yvonne Hollywood,
Worldwide Horizons
train leaves every 30 minutes
and can be booked in
advance.
Back down on ground level,
what could be more Brazilian
than visiting Copacabana
Beach? Rebuilt in 1970 with
a long walkway, the beach is
well served by bars and restaurants
on the 4km paved
area.
Each New Year, around
two million people visit this
beach to witness one of the
world’s most spectacular firework
display to welcome in
the new year.
A little further along the
coast, you will find Ipanema
Beach, one of the best places
to take a dip. The surrounding
area of this beach is where
local artists gather and has
an altogether more hippy feel
to it. Both beach areas are
well served by hotels and local
accommodation, from the
truly 5 star to the adventurous
home rentals.
It is good to note that Copacabana
and Ipanema areas
are two of the three safest
places to stay whilst in Rio.
They are also the some of
the best places to enjoy the
nightlife of the city, complete
with hip nightclubs as well
as many places featuring live
music.
And one can’t think of Rio
without mentioning the huge
Carnival that takes place
there annually in February.
This is the party to end all
parties, held over a 4-5 day
period, a parade of thousands
of persons in some of the
most colourful costumes that
can be imagined. This event
has developed over the years
(it first started around 1723,
so these people know how to
party!) and now many of the
events held at it are ticketed
events – a good idea to buy in
advance given that there can
be up to 2 million visitors to
the festival on a daily basis!
The best time to visit Rio
is between December and
March, when the weather is
at its best.
The currency is Brazilian
Real, with €100 buying you
around 450 reais. Around
45 Reais is the cost of a nice
wine, accompanying a meal
which costs around 50-100
reais.
Kotor
The old town – that is the
most famous part of Kotor,
where the Kotor history,
culture, and tradition are
being preserved.
The old town of Kotor has a
great number of monuments
of the medieval architecture
– churches, cathedrals, palaces
and museums. Its beauty
is complemented with the
multitude of narrow streets,
squares and markets.
The old town also stands
out due to the great number
of stylishly-made gates, palaces
of the wealthy families,
and a great number of stairs.
Today, the old nucleus of
Kotor is considered to be
the best preserved medieval
urban entity in the Mediterranean.
The largest and the
most impressive are, without
doubt, city bulwarks
which surround the town.
They are about 5km long,
20m high and about 10m
wide. Being completely preserved,
they are a unique
sample of the fortification
architecture in Europe. The
beginning of their construction
started in the 9th century.
Bulwarks have 3 doors,
through which for centuries
people have come in and out
of the town. From whichever
door you enter the town, the
road will bring you to the
most famous edifice – Cathedral
of Sveti Tripun, from
the 12th century, which is
dedicated to the protector of
the town – Sveti Tripun.
There are several squares
in the town and the main,
and the biggest, city square
is Trg od oruzja (Square of
arms). That square was, and
remained, the main place for
gathering. Various gatherings
happened there.
Cultural richness of Kotor
is made priceless by its treasury
which hides some significant
cultural monuments
like Tower Watch (8th century),
Cathedral of Sveti Tripun
(12th century), Church
of Sveti Luka (12th century),
Prince’s Palace (17th century),
Church of Sveta Marija
(12th century), Church of
Lady of Health (15th century)
and Napoleon’s Theatre
(19th century).
Old Kotor also has numerous
palaces, such as Bizanti,
Buca, Pima and Grgurin,
which today houses the Maritime
museum.

Pets
More than
a stroll in
the park
ARE you a social stroller
or an escapist? New research
has revealed the
benefits people get from
walking their dog.
Eight out of ten dog owners
say they take their pet
out for a stroll just go get
some peace and quiet.
As well as exercising
their pooch, 71 per cent believe
this space is a vital destressing
tool in the hustle
and bustle of life, while
time spent with mans’ best
friend gives more than three
quarters of owners valuable
thinking time.
The study discovered that
one in five dog owners have
made a major life decision
while out on a walk – using
the time to mull over a
problem or dilemma.
And that includes more
than one in four who have
decided to end a relationship
while exercising their pet.
Others have made the decision
to move home, change
jobs, start their own business
or even try for a baby.
Not getting out on the
walk can make owners
guilty, irritable and even
sad, according the research.
The study was carried out
amongst 2,000 dog owners.
Gemma Cunningham, brand
manager for YuMOVE, which
commissioned the research,
said: “Walking the dog is one
of the most important jobs as
an owner.
“But while it is primarily
for the benefit of the dog, it
can also be beneficial for dog
owners too.
“Getting away from everyday
life for a bit while you go
on a quiet stroll can give you
some much needed time with
man’s best friend to clear
your head and enjoy some
time to yourself – something
many can struggle to get otherwise.”
The study also found the
average dog owner heads out
on eight walks with their pet
a week, and with each one
lasting around 30 minutes –
so that comes to four hours
of thinking time per week.
Most of the owners quizzed
also spoke of the benefits of
exercise while six in 10 enjoy
the chance to have quality
time with their canine companion.
Being outdoors, meeting
other dog owners and discovering
new places are also
among the reported benefits
of walking the dog.
A quarter of owners use it
as an opportunity to go for
a stroll with their partner
while, 13 per cent take their
children along.
As a result, 35 per cent say
walking together has bought
them more laughter and enjoyment,
while 15 per cent
say it has made them more
trusting. Others say they
are now more honest with
each other and also more
supportive.
So it’s little wonder that
Gemma added: “It is also
of dog walkers who find different
purpose and meaning
in their daily walks.
“Whether it is to spend
more time together with the
simply find some peace and
quiet, the walk can bring a
wide range of benefits.”
FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 23
First time buying stages
The Spanish property market
has many quirks, and it pays to
do your research before buying a
home in Spain.
The process of buying a property
in Spain usually runs as follows.
First, the buyer makes an offer,
usually through the seller’s estate
agent.
If this is accepted, then the buyer
and seller sign a preliminary contract
(contrato privado de compravento)
and the buyer pays a deposit, typically
10 per cent of the purchase
price.
The buyer then arranges any
mortgage they require, although
they should have already discussed
their needs with the mortgage provider.
The contract of sale (escritura
de compravento) is usually signed in
front of a notary, at which point the
full sale price, taxes and other costs
become due.
The services of a notary are not legally
required to complete the sale,
but it is advisable and required by
many mortgages.
The seller is responsible for hidden
defects in the property, even if
they are not aware of them. However,
in practice gaining restitution
for such defects can be difficult and
costly.
by Alex Trelinski
Paying the costs and taxes associated
with buying a home can be completed
by the buyer or their agent.
It is the buyer’s responsibility, however,
to ensure taxes are paid.
The buyer is also responsible for
registering the property. The notary
may provide this service for a fee,
and/or may notify the registry office
that the sale has taken place, without
completing full registration.
Costs are primarily paid by the
buyer, and vary across Spain. Many
are negotiable – there are no fixed
fees for lawyers or estate agents.
Costs paid by the buyer
include:
• Property transfer tax 6–10 per
cent(existing properties) / IVA
at 10 per cent (new
properties);
• Notary costs, title deed tax and
land registration fee 1 to 2.5
per cent;
• Legal fees 1 to 2 per
cent(including IVA).
The estate agent’s fees are usually
paid by the seller, and this is typically
their only cost. Estate agents
usually charge a percentage, typically
around 3 per cent of the final
sale price.
Coastal demand continues
The prices of homes that
were sold in Spain’s coastal
regions grew by an average
of 5.7 per cent over the
last year, up to 1,727 euros
per metre squared, which
is 160 euros per square
foot, according to a study
published by internet property
portal idealista.
Properties on the Costa
del Sol were those that have
risen the most in the last
year, with an increase of 9.9
per cent. These are followed
by the coastal areas of the
Balearic Islands, with a price
change of 9.3 per cent.
The Costa Blanca saw a
more modest rise of 3.7 per
cent, whilst Murcia’s Costa
Calida was slightly higher
at 4.1 per cent, alongside the
Costa de Valencia.
by Alex Trelinski
The Cantabrian coasts in
the north of Spain, on the
other hand, kept showing
year-on-year drops in their
prices. The greatest decrease
in house prices occurred in
the Mariña Lucense (-6.5 per
cent), followed by the Costa
da Morte in A Coruña (-1.1
per cent), the Costa of Biscay
(-0.7 per cent) and the Costa
Verde in Asturias (-0.6 per
cent).
In all other Spanish coastal
areas, property prices
increased.
The Balearic coast remains
the area with the
highest prices: 3,144 euros/
m 2 , or 289 euros/sq ft. It is followed
by the Costa Guipuzcoana
(2,972 euros/m 2 or 276
euros/sq ft), Maresme (2,368
euros/m 2 or 220 euros/sq ft)
and the Costa Brava (2,250
euros/m 2 or 209 euros/sq ft).
Also above two thousand
euros are the Coast of Biscay
(2,204 euros/m 2 or 205 euros/
sq ft) and the Costa del Sol
(2,030 euros/m 2 or 189 euros/
sq ft).
The Mariña Lucense is the
coastal area with the lowest
prices, with sellers only
asking for 949 euros/m 2 , or
88 euros/sq ft. Close behind
it comes the Costa da Morte
with 957 euros/m 2 , or 89 euros/sq
ft, then the Costa del
Azahar in Castellón (1,044
euros/m 2 or 97 euros/sq ft),
the Costa de Valencia (1,118
euros/m 2 or 104 euros/sq ft)
and the Costa Cálida (1,144
euros/m 2 or 106 euros/sq ft).
Sardine tins for
A CONTROVERSIAL plan
in Barcelona to use shipping
containers as emergency
housing has started
construction - or rather
installation - this month.
Close to La Rambla, the
cities iconic shopping street
and one of its main visitor
attractions, the initial
12 containers have already
been craned into place.
The controversy is twofold,
the aesthetic qualities
of the housing and whether
it is right to house people in
these conditions.
However there are over
1,000 people on the emergency
waiting list alone,
many of them effectively
homeless and the council felt
they had little choice but to
pilot the scheme.
The units will be soundproofed
and have many of
the mod-cons you associate
with modern apartments.
However the council have
said that the speed of installation
is the greatest benefit,
less than a year compared
to an eight year average for
conventional new housing.
Barcelona’s public housing
stock is just 1.5%, one of the
lowest levels in Europe.

Nature’s super
food – QUINOA
Today we would like to tell
you more about nature's
super food – QUINOA.
Not only can you make
wonders with it in your kitchen,
but you can benefit greatly
from its health benefits!
Just to name several important
health benefits for
you:
1. Quinoa is one of the most
protein-rich foods we can
eat. It is a complete protein
containing all nine
essential amino acids.
2. Quinoa contains almost
twice as much fiber as
most other grains. It also
helps to prevent heart
disease by reducing high
blood pressure and diabetes.
3. Quinoa contains Iron.
Iron helps keep our red
blood cells healthy and is
the basis of hemoglobin
formation.
4. Quinoa contains lysine.
Lysine is mainly essential
for tissue growth and repair.
5. Quinoa is rich in magnesium.
Magnesium helps
to relax blood vessels and
thereby to alleviate migraines.
Magnesium also
may reduce Type 2 diabetes
by promoting healthy
blood sugar control.
6. Quinoa is high in Riboflavin
(B2). B2 improves energy
metabolism within
brain and muscle cells
7. Quinoa has a high content
of manganese. Manganese
is an antioxidant,
and helps to protect your
body from free radicals
linked to cancer, aging
and many other diseases.
In short, quinoa is THE
FOOD OF CHOICE for everyone
serious to take their
health to the next level.
Here are some great
ideas how you can
use quinoa:
• In salads
• Make a stew with it
• Make quinoa pudding
• Use quinoa as a stuffing
for vegetable and meats
Don’t fall at the first hurdle
TAKING those first steps to
fitness can be daunting but
experts say you’ve a better
chance of keeping on track
if you can avoid these beginners’
blunders.
Steer clear of these five
common gym rookie errors
and you will maintain
motivation and get fitter.
1. Poor Preparation
Beginners don’t realise that
a workout actually starts
before entering the gym, by
eating the right pre-exercise
meal, getting fully hydrated
and stepping into appropriate
Parents advised to
check that poor eye
sight is not holding
their children back
Opticians are using the start
of the new school year as an
opportunity to inform parents
and children of the importance of
regular eye tests.
At the start of term, they
recommend that parents take
their children to a professional
who can check their vision and
take the right measures to ensure
that their eye sight is not holding
them back. Poor vision can inhibit
learning and hold them back from
performing well in sports.
Juan Carlos Martínez Moral,
president of the General Council
of Colleges of Opticians-
Optometrists (CGCOO), says: ‘As
vision can often change during
your school career, it is important
to have regular eye examinations
by an optician-optometrist. By
having your eyes tested at least
once a year, you can rule out
refractive problems such as longsightedness,
short-sightedness,
or astigmatism; binocular vision
abnormalities such as strabismus,
or amblyopia, popularly
referred to as “lazy eye”.’
Francisco Jurado from optical
group Specsavers Ópticas agrees:
‘We have seen a high number
of children needing glasses
across our opticians in Spain
and experts around the world
are reporting a sharp increase
in myopia in young children.
The difficulty with children with
poor eye sight is they often don’t
realise there is anything wrong
before it is identified in an eye
test. This means they struggle
unnecessarily at school and can
be misdiagnosed with learning
difficulties simply because of their
poor vision. To avoid issues like
these, we also recommend yearly
eye tests for children before they
go to full-time education and
incorporating an eye test into the
“Back to School” routine to pick
clothing.
Don’t eat anything full of
fibre or too heavy to avoid feeling
bloated, take a bottle of
water and wear a loose shirt
and shorts with appropriate
trainers.
Location is also vital to
ensuring a successful ses-
up any changes early, before it
starts to effect their learning.’
According to charity ONCE, they
have 4,245 members aged 18
and under who are suffering
from low vision or blindness
and studies show that one out
of every four children has an
undetected vision problem that
may inhibit their progress.
Common eye conditions can all
be identified with a complete
eye test. The sooner that vision
problems are detected, the better
the outcome. Conditions such as
squint and amblyopia (lazy eye)
can be treated more effectively if
they are picked up earlier.
Book a Back to School eye test
at Specsavers Ópticas during
September and see their range
of glasses which are specially
designed for children, including a
new range of Toy Story glasses.
To find your nearest store visit
sion; don’t choose somewhere
that’s too busy, that could
be distracting or that has
disappointing facilities.
The key to preparation is
warming up the muscles; this
could be as simple as a brisk
walk to the gym followed by
some suitable stretches.
2. Over-ambition
Confidence is key to starting
an exercise journey, but many
first-time gym-goers and running
rookies make the mistake
of trying to do too much
too soon.
It is necessary for novices
to be realistic about their current
with current abilities and
limits and to know what their
objectives in the short and
long-term.
The best approach is to
steadily build a foundation
of fitness – remember every
single session doesn’t need to
be a personal best.
3. Unbalanced
routines
Failing to strike a balance
between cardiovascular calorie
burning and strength or
weight training will not help
achieve fitness goals.
It is normal to have a specific
focus or objective, such as
gaining arm strength or training
for a race, but overall fitness
can only be achieved by
including the whole body in
workout regimes.
Never skip leg day. It has become
a cliché among exercise
enthusiasts, but overlooking
the lower body will eventually
result in the double-whammy
of looking stupid and getting
hurt.
4. Losing motivation
The novelty will wear off naturally
as with any new activity,
but the only way to consistently
uphold and improve fitness
levels is to maintain motivation.
Do this by keeping music or
podcast playlists vibrant and
up to date, but definitely avoid
off-putting books; the gym is
for exercise, not story time.
Also accept that injuries
can happen even with all the
correct precautions; elite athletes,
such as Olympic medallists,
are susceptible to an
occasional strained muscle –
beginners will be too.
Though an obvious physical
barrier in the short-term,
an injury should not become
a mental obstacle and discourage
beginners from all that is
good about getting active.
Working out with a friend
can also be a great inspiration
in the gym.
5. Neglecting
recovery
The warm-down after hitting
the gym or pounding the pavements
is crucial to getting the
most out of exercise.
Inadequate rest and recovery
between sessions could
cause injuries, but that doesn’t
mean an immediate lie down
on the sofa post-workout.
Do some light stretches
covering the whole body and
gradually decrease movement
to avoid stiffness later that
day or the following morning;
consider, for example, a walk
to the shops. Warm-down by
strolling around the local high
street, as this can also provide
the opportunity to rehydrate
and refuel, which is pivotal
to recovery and reaping longterm
benefits.
DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in
that the goal is for the solver to uncover a
hidden quote. A black-and-white crosswordstyle
grid is set up for each quote, with a
number of letters “hovering” above each
column. Your task is to “drop” each of those
letters into the appropriate square in each
column, until the entire quote is revealed. All
punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.)
has been removed. Good luck!
Alex Trelinski’s
Back In Britain
KEEPING
IT PINK
Some of the best rainbows that I have ever seen
have been here in Spain, but a Scottish photographer
clicked something special, as he got a
pink rainbow during sunrise.
Sinclair Cunningham was out in the countryside
looking to capture a striking pink sunrise on his
camera, when he came across the rainbow.
In eight years of taking pictures, the self-employed
photographer says he has never seen a pink rainbow,
which tends to occur either during sunrise or sunset.
The rainbow appeared in the sky at 6.00am near
the ‘Kissing Trees’ in Kinghorn, Fife.
Sinclair said: ‘I turned round and saw the pink
rainbow and just got into position to capture it with
the Kissing Trees in the shot and the rainbow dipping
down into it”.
I suggest that Sinclair spends some time over
here, and he will have a rainbow field day, assuming
it rains.
SLOWEST CHASE EVER
I love watching a good car
chase in the movies or on the
TV, but I’m not sure how high
my excitement levels would
have reached after a man was
arrested last Saturday night after
leading a
leading a 14mph police chase in
a stolen tractor!
Armed police chased the runaway
driver after he refused to
pull over on a road in Lincolnshire,
and attempted to stop the
STRAY KITTY CHAOS
Sparky the kitten caused a lot of She had heard the kitten’s meows
bother as he got trapped in a car, from her lounge but when she went out
which then had to be partially dismantled,
as Sparky was firmly She called her father and they eventu-
and checked she could not find anything.
wedged in the engine compartment. ally tracked the cries down to her car’s
Six-week-old stray Sparky’s plaintive
cries were heard coming from Zoe A wheel and the headlights had to
engine compartment.
Slocombe’s parked car in Huntingdon, come out so they could reach the kitten ,
Cambridgeshire.
and they wrapped him in a blanket and
Her father then took the front of the gave him some food and water before
car apart to get to the kitten.
taking him to a vet.
Ms Slocombe(cue pussy joke from “Are Experts said the little kitten was
You Being Served” ?) said she wrapped lucky to have survived and he’s been
the kitten in a blanket and he is now being
cared for by the RSPCA.
ing him a
looked after by the RSPCA ahead of find-
home.
vehicle because it had no lights
and was believed to be stolen.
However, the driver ignored
their warning signals and led the
cops on Britain’s slowest ever pursuit
– causing damage to one police
vehicle.
Armed officers were forced to
get involved and form a road block
to bring the motorist to a halt
near Market Rasen.
Don’t expect this chase to hit
the big screen soon!
NESSIE’S AN EEL
I’ve been to Loch Ness in Scotland
a couple of times, and of course
it’s all about spotting that monster,
which of course has been
a great fabrication just to boost
tourism.
But scientists from New Zealand
reckon they have come up with an
obvious reason for what Nessie might
really be, namely giant eels.
The researchers have tried to catalogue
all living species in the loch by
extracting DNA from water samples.
Following analysis, the scientists
So much for some species of ditional fish being served up with
trachips
back in Britain, as a survey
done by The Mirror newspaper
shows all kinds of stuff, including
endangered species of shark being
sold at chippies.
A DNA probe found dishes such as
rock salmon contained spiny dogfish
and starry smooth-hound.
A Mirror investigation discovered
threatened spiny dogfish and starry
smooth-hound were being passed off
have ruled out the presence
of large animals
said to be behind reports
of a monster.
No evidence of a prehistoric marine
reptile called a plesiosaur or a large
fish such as a sturgeon(Not, Nicola) were found.
down the years may in fact have been
giant European eels, based on the
Catfish and suggestions that a DNA samples.
wandering Greenland shark were Not exciting, but using logic, we
behind the sightings were also discounted.
Ness Monster sightings, and a blow
probably have the answer to the Loch
But they have reached a conclusion
that some of the Nessie sightings
FISHY BUSINESS
as rock salmon, huss and rock eels to
unsuspecting customers.
Campaigners have now called for
better labelling so wholesalers and
chippies know exactly what species of
fish they are selling.
Scientists tested 15 battered samples
bought at resort towns including
Bournemouth, Brighton, Clacton,
Great Yarmouth, Newquay and Poole.
The Marine Conservation Society
said the research showed “most consumers
are completely unaware of
to the local tourist industry.
what they’re eating”.
Its head of fisheries and aquaculture
Samuel Stone added: “Chippies should
provide better information and labelling
at the point of sale.”
That’s fair enough, but I suspect
chippies are being sold stuff that is not
the real deal, and I do have some sympathy
for them.
UNIFORM
NONSENSE
It’s been “back to existing students.
school” for the last So no skirts for
week or so for many girls(really), and the argument
is over “concerns”
youngsters in the UK,
and also in Spain, and over the length of the
that means that there skirts, with the new rules
had to be some institution
getting embroiled of transgender pupils.
also catering for a handful
in a row over school 150 parents and pupils
uniforms.
staged a protest over the
I’m from the radical gender neutral uniforms,
view of things that they with the protestors saying
that the youngsters
are an utter waste of time
and money, and that the should have a choice to
focus should be on education.
believe clothes are being
wear skirts, while others
That’s why I especially wasted.
have no time for the political
correctness of the have had to buy trousers
So returning pupils
Priory School in Lewes, for the new school year, as
West Sussex who crazily the skirts are dumped.
decided to make trousers It just doesn’t make any
compulsory for new and sense.

Andy
Mansell’s
Stars In My
Eyes
PRETTY WOMAN
HEADS UP WEST
Hard to believe that the movie Pretty
Woman is nearly thirty years old, yes
thirty.
The box office smash, starring
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, first
released in 1990, is a classic story
focusing on an eccentric sex worker
by the name of Vivian Ward who
is hired by wealthy businessman
Edward Lewis to escort him to several
high-flying social and business
events.
Fans of the film will be delighted to
learn that a musical adaptation of the
movie will hit the West End stage on
Valentine’s Day next year.
The Piccadilly Theatre will play host
Boris and
Theresa?
to Pretty Woman: The Musical for a
very limited run, with Bryan Adams
stepping in to helm the tunes.
No word has been released on who
will play the lead roles, but I’m
guessing that Boris Johnson and
Theresa May aren’t in the running.
HOLOGRAM WHITNEY ON TOUR
Not sure how I feel about hearing
that a Whitney Houston hologram
is set to tour the UK next year,
according to reports.
Apparently, though details are still
sketchy, the show will be staged
by Base Entertainment, which has
previously produced holograms
of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison,
with one based on Amy Winehouse
apparently in the works.
The concerts are set to feature
many of the major hits released by
Houston, who passed away in 2012.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody
(Who Loves Me) and The Greatest
Love of All are expected to be
included, with the New York Times
reporting original band members
and backing singers are lined up to
perform alongside the hologram.
I suppose for diehard fans the
chance to hear a flawless Whitney
perform again is hard to resist,
Whitney
on the wall
particularly as some of her last
appearances prior to her death
were plain embarrassing.
Mind you I went to a Chris Rea
concert once and may aswell have
been watching a hologram……He
had as much personality as the
wall.
PROUD OF PRIDE
Homolulu
2019
You may recall last week I wrote
that I would be taking part in the
Benidorm Pride parade along
Levante Beach last Saturday on
our Homolulu float.
Well, I’m very happy to report
that we had a fantastic time,
despite a few technical hitches,
leaving us without music for
a large part of the route and
torrential rain as we decorated
our transport.
Huge thanks to everyone who
jumped onboard and walked
alongside and to those who
helped get it ready.
This year’s festival was one of
the best, so congratulations to
everyone involved, organisers,
performers, participants
and spectators.
GRAHAM’S IN IT FOR
THE LONG HAUL
Having recently reached an age
where, had I stayed in the UK, I
would almost certainly already
have retired, but as I live and
work in Spain, the chances of
me finishing work are next to
zero, I was comforted to read the
thoughts of chat show supremo
Graham Norton.
Speaking on what the future
holds on US radio show SiriusXM,
Graham said: ‘What I might try
to do is just cut back on my
workload. Then I would be able to
stare at a wall, write a book, walk
the dogs…’
However, he added that friends
Teenage
daydream
Graham
who have retired have convinced
him that it’s a terrible idea.
‘What’s odd is, when you stop
working you become a teenage
girl,’ he said. ‘You start obsessing
about minutiae. I don’t want to
turn into that person.’
You’re right Graham, neither do I,
but I don’t want to stare at a wall
either.
Benidorm has had a tough
year, with a negative campaign
waged against us by certain
parts of the UK media, so it was
nice to give a big finger to all
the Beni knockers and show
them that when we want to, we
can put on a show to beat them
all.
Jamie’s Out
So this year’s Strictly Come Dancing hasn’t
even reached the live shows and already
there’s been a casualty.
Made in Chelsea’s blond bombshell, Jamie
Laing has pulled out owing to an injury
sustained in training.
He quit at the weekend after damaging
a tendon in his right foot during a
group number, claims that he told his
professional dance partner, Oti Mabusi,
about his ailment but she told him to grin
and bear it.
“It felt like someone had hit me on the back
of it with a belt. like stepping on glass,”
said Jaimie, “I grabbed Oti and said, ‘Oti
something’s happened to my foot,’ and she
Jamie’s quit
Strictly
just went, ‘Dance.’”
There’s been lots of speculation that Jamie
will return to Strictly next year, but for this
series he has been replaced by Emmerdale
hunk Kelvin Fletcher, who plays Andy
Sugden in the Northern soap.
Not quite chalk and cheese ….. more like
Moet and a mug of Yorkshire tea.

disbelief.
"This year has been a
dream come true," Andreescu
told the crowd.
"I am beyond grateful
and truly blessed. I've
worked really hard for this
moment. To play on this
stage against Serena - a
true legend of the sport - is
amazing."
Casey’s tight win
by Alex Trelinski
Paul Casey won his first
European Tour title for
five years with a onestroke
victory at the
Porsche European Open
last Sunday.
Casey shot a six-under 66
in Hamburg to finish ahead
of Scotland's Bob MacIntyre,
German Bernd Ritthammer
and Matthias Schwab of
Austria.
It was a second victory of
2019 for the 42-year-old after
success at the Valspar
Championship on the PGA
Tour.
"This is an incredibly prestigious
tournament," said
Casey. "I'm over the moon to
be European Open champion."
The 2019 MotoGP season
resumes this weekend
with the San Marino GP,
and Spain’s Marc Marquez
continuing his domination
of the title race.
The Misano circuit opened
50 years ago, and has seen
plenty of Italian success in
the past, though all eyes will
be on world champion Marquez,
who has admitted that
his failure to win races twice
in a row at Silverstone and
by Alex Trelinski
Austria have been his worst
moments of the year.
The perfectionist that
Marquez is and despite the
fact he leads the standings,
he said that losing on the
last lap at Silverstone in late
August to fellow Spaniard,
Alex Rins, was also hard to
take.
Marquez though is on 250
points, 78 points clear of sec-
by Alex Trelinski
citing Italian Grand Prix at
Monza last Sunday.
ond-placed Andrea Dovizioso,
and he’ll be hoping that
the Italian won’t be bring on
a home victory this Sunday.
Back to back wins
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc
held on under intense
pressure from both Mercedes
drivers to win an ex-
Leclerc's victory was his
second in a row, following his
maiden win in Belgium a week
earlier, and Ferrari's first at
their home race since Fernando
Alonso triumphed in
2010. The 21-year-old pushed
the rules on driving conduct
to hold off Lewis Hamilton
through the middle of the race
before Valtteri Bottas took up
the challenge in the closing
laps after a mistake from the
world champion.
Bottas finished second
and his teammate Hamilton
third, with Singapore
to come a week on Sunday,
and Hamilton a healthy 63
points ahead of Bottas in the
championship.

Vunipola
Watford produced the
first Premier League
managerial sacking last
weekend by showing the
door to Javi Garcia, and
then reappointing Quique
Sanchez Flores to his old
job.
Sanchez was in charge
of Watford for the 2015-16
campaign before leaving at
the end of the season.
Fellow Spaniard Gracia,
whose coaching team have
also left, had been in charge
since January 2018 - making
him the first Hornets boss to
last more than one full season
since 2013.
The appointment of Flores
blowby
Prop Mako Vunipola will Alex Trelinski
not be fit until the end of
England's Rugby World opener against Tonga on
Cup pool-stage campaign
after suffering a setback
with his hamstring injury.
It was initially hoped
Vunipola would be fit for
September 22nd.
"He's probably going to be
right for the third or fourth
game," coach Eddie Jones
said after England beat Italy
England's tournament 37-0 in Newcastle last Friday
in their last warm-up
match.
"He just had a little scar
tissue which was impairing
his movement."
The England boss added:
"But that's all been fixed.
He's progressing really well
now."
Sack and return
by Alex Trelinski
was confirmed 30 minutes
later. Watford are bottom of
the Premier League table
with one point.
Gracia led the club to
Wembley last season, where
they lost 6-0 to Manchester
City in the biggest FA Cup
final win in over a century,
as well as 11th place in the
Premier League.

KLOPP
GOES
FOR
FIVE
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool
will be first out of the traps
as the Premier League returns
this weekend after
the international break.
The Reds will go for five
straight wins as they play
Newcastle United at Anfield
tomorrow lunchtime
Liverpool is the only
team that have a 100 per
cent record in the Premier
League, and will fancy
their chances against Steve
Bruce’s Newcastle United.
Having said that, the last
road-trip for Newcastle produced
a one-nil win at Spurs,
though most suspect the Geordies
will be fighting a long
by Alex Trelinski
battle against relegation.
Champions Manchester
City are two points behind
Liverpool, and they go to
early strugglers Norwich for
the Saturday evening clash.
Leicester City have started
well and have a Saturday
afternoon trip to Manchester
United to look forward
to, with the home side still
smarting from all the costly
missed penalties they have
had this season, plus that late
late show by Crystal Palace.
Roy Hodgson’s side are
fourth in an unfamiliarlooking
table, and they
have a London derby clash
at Tottenham tomorrow.
Frank Lampard has
quickly discovered that
high profile Premier League
management is a different
kettle of fish from running
a Championship team, and
you sense that defeat at
Sheffield United, who have
easily looked the best of the
promoted sides, will get the
early panic button pressed
at Stamford Bridge.
Sunday sees Quique return
as boss of bottom side
Watford, and the Vicarage
Road outfit will be looking
for an immediate bounce as
they entertain Arsenal.
Fantastic final
Rafa Nadal won his 19th by Alex Trelinski
Slam victories.
Grand Slam title on Sunday
"It has been one of the
night, after holding
off Russian Daniil Medvedev's
exhilarating fightback
Open final.
His victory moves him
within one of Swiss rival
most emotional nights in
my tennis career," Nadal
said. "It has been an amaz-
in one of the greatest Roger Federer's all-time ing final. It has been a crazy
US Open finals.
leading tally of men's Grand match."
The Spanish star won 7-5
6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4 against the
fifth seed in New York.
Nadal, seeded second, was
cruising at two sets and a
break up, only for Medvedev
to force a decider.
But Nadal stopped his
momentum to clinch a thrilling
win in four hours and 50
minutes - just four minutes
shorter than the longest US
No deal Neymar
Barcelona will not make a
move for Paris St-Germain
forward Neymar in January,
says Barca club president
Josep Maria Bartomeu.
by Alex Trelinski
The La Liga champìons
spent all summer trying to
negotiate a deal to re-sign
the Brazilian, who moved
to France for a world record
220 million euros in 2017.
However, the two clubs
were ultimately unable to
agree a deal.
Asked whether it was possible
for Barca to sign Neymar
in January, Bartomeu
said:"No. Right now, no."
