El Plantio 2
Golf Society
BENIGN conditions that
make Spain such a lovely
place to live in away from
the hot periods of July and
August greeted the 8 members
making up 4 pairs in El
Plantio 2’s Texas Scramble.
However, a breeze sprang
up on the last nine holes
to make things little spicy.
Judging by the final scores
with just 2.5 shots separating
first and fourth positions,
handicapping was spot
on. Indeed first and second
position was decided by a
mere 0.3 handicap points.
Nearest the pins – Hole 4
Graham Blakeway, Hole 8,
Ray Housley.
Second place, Handicap
6.9, David Swann, Paddy
O'Brien – 48.1 points
First place, Handicap 7.2,
Ray Housley, Mike Davies –
47.8 points.
If anyone would like to
join our Society, we play at
El Plantio Golf Club every
Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
We use both courses - the
Par 3 9 hole course and the
main 18 hole course, so we
cater for all abilities.
The membership rates are
very competitive, so call for
more details.
Anyone who wishes to
play in the Society as a guest
or join as a new member,
contact David Swann on 865
Canadian
stunner
Teenager Bianca Andreescu
stunned Serena
Williams in a gripping
US Open final to claim a
first Grand Slam title last
weekend and deny the
American a 24th major.
Williams, 37, did not
cope with the 19-year-old's
quality in a 6-3 7-5 loss.
by Alex Trelinski
Canadian 15th seed Andreescu,
in the main draw
here for the first time,
blew a double break in the
second set before taking
her third match point and
falling to the ground in
disbelief.
"This year has been a
dream come true," Andreescu
told the crowd.
"I am beyond grateful
and truly blessed. I've
worked really hard for this
moment. To play on this
stage against Serena - a
true legend of the sport - is
amazing."
Casey’s tight win
by Alex Trelinski
Paul Casey won his first
European Tour title for
five years with a onestroke
victory at the
Porsche European Open
last Sunday.
Casey shot a six-under 66
in Hamburg to finish ahead
of Scotland's Bob MacIntyre,
German Bernd Ritthammer
and Matthias Schwab of
Austria.
It was a second victory of
2019 for the 42-year-old after
success at the Valspar
Championship on the PGA
Tour.
"This is an incredibly prestigious
tournament," said
Casey. "I'm over the moon to
be European Open champion."
The 2019 MotoGP season
resumes this weekend
with the San Marino GP,
and Spain’s Marc Marquez
continuing his domination
of the title race.
The Misano circuit opened
50 years ago, and has seen
plenty of Italian success in
the past, though all eyes will
be on world champion Marquez,
who has admitted that
his failure to win races twice
in a row at Silverstone and
by Alex Trelinski
Austria have been his worst
moments of the year.
The perfectionist that
Marquez is and despite the
fact he leads the standings,
he said that losing on the
last lap at Silverstone in late
August to fellow Spaniard,
Alex Rins, was also hard to
take.
Marquez though is on 250
points, 78 points clear of sec-
by Alex Trelinski
citing Italian Grand Prix at
Monza last Sunday.
ond-placed Andrea Dovizioso,
and he’ll be hoping that
the Italian won’t be bring on
a home victory this Sunday.
Back to back wins
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc
held on under intense
pressure from both Mercedes
drivers to win an ex-
Leclerc's victory was his
second in a row, following his
maiden win in Belgium a week
earlier, and Ferrari's first at
their home race since Fernando
Alonso triumphed in
2010. The 21-year-old pushed
the rules on driving conduct
to hold off Lewis Hamilton
through the middle of the race
before Valtteri Bottas took up
the challenge in the closing
laps after a mistake from the
world champion.
Bottas finished second
and his teammate Hamilton
third, with Singapore
to come a week on Sunday,
and Hamilton a healthy 63
points ahead of Bottas in the
championship.
