KRISTA - MALAYSIA'S PREFERRED KINDERGARTEN
PROGRAMME
Krista believes that the early childhood period is a very crucial stage of a child's
development that will set the direction for his or her life. While high quality and loving care
is indispensable during this period of time, there is also the all-encompassing programme
as well as a stimulating learning and nurturing environment that should form the desired
platform on which to secure strong, valuable foundations for these young ones.
It is with this belief that Krista makes every effort to provide as many opportunities as
possible for its children in their early childhood years to develop holistically through
well-planned programmes and meaningful extra-curricular activities in a wonderfully
nurturing environment.
Krista caters to the uniqueness and the different needs of each and every child and
provides him or her with the right conducive environment and experiences so that he or she
may be moulded and nurtured to mature into balanced, resourceful, successful and
wonderful individuals. Krista's CAPABLE Programme, an all-encompassing programme
conducted in all its centres nationwide, focuses on individuality, the effective acquisition of
knowledge, character building and the achieving of competency. These 4 segments of the
CAPABLE Programme are made up of the components of child-centred learning, academic
foundation, practical experiences, assessment provision, benevolence inculcation, learn to
play and exploratory endeavours.
Krista@RedQ. Looking on is Wong Wai Kuan and Rajes Jesylyn, Principal of Krista@RedQ
Krista books, teaching materials and hands-on fun learning activities have been prepared with this
concept in mind and are tailored according to the children's various learning and experience stages,
allowing them to learn at their own pace in the conducive environment prepared for them.
Krista strives to translate life's lessons and values to the children through plenty of fun experiential
learning activities in a safe environment where every child is given the opportunity to develop as an
all-rounder and have memorable childhood experiences. Krista also believes in building up the child's
self esteem and self confidence, inculcating good values and discipline in the child, stimulating and
sustaining the child's interest in learning new things about the world around them while developing the
child's thinking, cognitive, language and literacy, social and other skills that are needed for continued
school success and beyond.
Krista's programmes and methods haves undoubtedly added meaningfully to the enrichment of the overall development and progress of the Krista kid. In addition, Krista has always valued a close
partnership with parents as the desirable development of the child in its totality is only possible with the support, understanding, commitment as well as the intimate involvement of parents. The
regular feedback received from Krista parents on their children's developmental progress give a valuable insight into the effectiveness of the holistic and nurturing environment at Krista centres.
Sam Ang, whose daughter, Li-Chin is enrolled at a Krista centre, has this to say, “I am pleased with Krista and really appreciate the feedback I get from the all the teachers there. I feel good about
the way Li-Chin is progressing from the feedback we get from our daughter. I also like the many excursions and the invited guest speakers that show up at Krista to give the children the relevant
educational experiences. I must say that my wife and I are very satisfied parents when it comes to our daughter's developmental progress at school.”
Parents, Sivamoorthy and Letchumy who send their son, Tommy to a Krista centre are impressed
with the way Krista nurtures the kids. “It's the extra quality care that Krista provides that makes it
a special place. When you arrive to pick up your child. The teachers would make time to share
with you the little details about your child's day and challenges, any new skills learned and the
kind of day he had. We have found that the connection and communication between the staff at
Krista and us to be an open one at all times. Our boy has developed important social skills and
confidence through structured activities under the guidance of the dedicated teachers and this he
will need as he journeys on in his schooling life later on. We are certainly impressed with Krista.”
The first batch of Krista students are already in colleges and universities today. Since Krista
opened its doors to young children in their early childhood years some twenty three years ago,
thousands of them have benefited from the wonderful programmes and meaningful activities
carried out at Krista centres throughout the nation. This has been made possible with Krista's
nation-wide network of kindergartens that have continuously gone beyond just meeting the
academic needs of these young children, in a purposefully prepared holistic and nurturing
environment of a Krista centre.
All parents wear their hearts on their sleeves, so to speak. The day we become a
parent is the day that our thoughts are no longer with ourselves, but rather, we think
of ways to give the best to our child or children.
It’s natural for new parents to worry endlessly about their little ones too, but as you
go on, things will get better and you’ll learn to take things one day at a time. Trusting
your natural instinct is one way to go, for it’s almost always right!
As mothers, nature has given us the gift of being able to nourish our babies with our
own milk, whereby it provides everything our precious newborn needs for the first
few months of his or her life. Not all new moms get a smooth start to their
breastfeeding journey though - some may run into problems that if left unsolved, may
hinder or even prevent breastfeeding. In view of that, we hope that this month’s
special guide will be of help, for it covers almost every aspect of breastfeeding and all
its challenges, with tips on how to get around them.
This and so much more, all await you within the pages of this issue of BabyTalk. Enjoy!
Boy or girl? It’s in the father’s genes
A Newcastle University study involving thousands of families
is helping prospective parents work out whether they are
likely to have sons or daughters. The work by Corry Gellatly, a
research scientist at the university, has shown that men inherit
a tendency to have more sons or more daughters from their
parents. This means that a man with many brothers is more
likely to have sons, while a man with many sisters is more
likely to have daughters.
The research involved a study of 927 family trees containing
information on 556,387 people from North America and
Europe going back to 1600. “The family tree study showed
that whether you’re likely to have a boy or a girl is inherited.
We now know that men are more likely to have sons if they
have more brothers but are more likely to have daughters if
they have more sisters. However, in women, you just can’t
predict it,” Mr Gellatly explains.
Low vitamin D at birth raises risk
of higher blood pressure in kids
Vitamin D deficiency from birth to early childhood was
associated with an increased risk of elevated blood pressure in
later childhood and adolescence, according to new research in
the American Heart Association journal Hypertension.
Researchers followed 775 children from birth to age
18 at the Boston Medical Center. Most lived in a lowincome,
urban area and 68% of the children were African
American. Low vitamin D levels were defined as less
than 11 ng/ml (nanograms per millimeter) in cord blood
at birth and less than 25 ng/ml in a child’s blood during
early childhood. Compared to children who were born
with adequate vitamin D levels, those born with low levels
of vitamin D had an approximately 60% higher risk of
elevated systolic blood pressure between ages 6 and 18.
Both mother and baby genes affect
birth weight
The largest study of its kind has led to new insights into the
complex relationships surrounding how mothers’ and babies’
genes influence birth weight. The research, published in
Nature Genetics, identifies 190 links between our genetic
code and birth weight, two-thirds of which are identified
for the first time. It is the result of a large scale international
collaboration, led by the universities of Exeter, Queensland,
Oxford and Cambridge.
Scientists have long known that babies who are particularly
small at birth have a higher risk of birth complications, and also
tend to be more prone than average weight babies to high
blood pressure in adulthood. To understand the relationships
between birth weight and such risks to health, it is necessary to understand the contributions of both genetics and the
environment. But until now, these have been unclear. This study casts new light in this area by allowing scientists to clearly
separate the effects of a mother’s genetics on birth weight from the baby’s own genetics for the first time.
Autism: New clues on its
beginning
Researchers at the University of North
Carolina Health Care unveiled how
a particular gene helps organize the
scaffolding of brain cells called radial
progenitors necessary for the orderly
formation of the brain. Previous studies
have shown that this gene is mutated in
some people with autism. The discovery,
published in Neuron, illuminates the
molecular details of a key process in
brain development and adds to the
scientific understanding of the biological
basis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD),
a condition linked to brain development
and estimated to affect about one in 59
children born in the United States.
“This finding suggests that ASD can be
caused by disruptions occurring very
early on, when the cerebral cortex is
just beginning to construct itself,” said
study senior author Eva S. Anton, PhD,
professor of cell biology and physiology at
the UNC School of Medicine and member
of the UNC Neuroscience Center and the
UNC Autism Research Center.
Breastfeeding
challenges conquered!
Breastfeeding
challenges
conquered!
Breastfeeding has many
benefits for both you and
your baby, but, as many
moms can attest, it may
not be all smooth sailing
at first. You might have to
take some time to get the
hang of it. Some mothers
may even find it tricky at
first, but with patience,
there really isn’t any
breastfeeding issue that
cannot be overcome. Once
you’re on the role, we
promise you, it’ll be your
best decision ever!
BabyTalk | August 2019 13

Breastfeeding
challenges conquered!
The best nutrition
and it’s perfect in
every way
Breast milk is the perfect food for your
baby in every possible way. Nature
has seen to it that as your baby’s need
changes, so will the composition of
your breast milk. It is available on
demand too, and you do not have to
get up and prepare it. What’s more,
you’ll be assured that your breast milk
is also at the perfect temperature for
your baby’s consumption at any time!
With all this being said, new moms,
as mentioned before, may have a
daunting time at first, when they’re
attempting to establish breastfeeding
for the first time.
Getting around
breastfeeding issues
Common issues that may occur include
nipple pain and baby not being able
to latch on properly. Some new moms
may also find it difficult to find a
comfortable feeding position. Here are
some common breastfeeding issues
new moms may bump into.
Painful latch
This is probably the most common
issue that many new breastfeeding
moms face, especially during the
first few feeds. While it’s normal to
feel soreness in the nipples at the
beginning of your breastfeeding
journey, it should not prolong. In fact,
it shouldn’t even last more than a
minute from when baby first latches
on. If baby has latched and the pain
lasts longer than a minute into your
feeding session, check the positioning
of your baby on your breast.
Position your baby so that his mouth
covers more of the areola below the
nipple rather than above. You may have
to break his latch a few times to get the
perfect position. To do that, place your
index finger inside your baby’s mouth
to take him off your breast. Tickle his
chin so his mouth is wide open, and
try again. Your baby’s latch is good
when his chin and nose are touching
your breast, his lips are splay out and
you can’t see your nipple or part of the
lower areola.
Engorged breasts
While some experienced moms find
that if you nurse your baby frequently
enough from the start, you might
actually escape from having engorged
breasts, many others find that it’s part
and parcel of nursing, whereby it’s
bound to happen at some point. Either
way, engorgement makes it difficult
for babies to latch on to the breast
because it’s hard and un-conforming
to their tiny mouths. If you happen
to experience it, try hand expressing
some milk to get it flowing and to
soften up the breast a little. This will
hopefully make it easier for your baby
to latch on. And yes, frequent nursing
does help.
Thrush
Thrush is a yeast
infection in your baby’s
mouth, which can also
spread to your breasts.
It causes incessant
itchiness, soreness,
and sometimes a rash.
Your doctor will need
to give you antifungal
medication to put on
your nipple and in your
baby's mouth. Both
baby and you will have
to be treated for this. If
treatment isn’t given at
the same time, it may
keep being passed from
baby to you and vice
versa, and delay healing.
Cracked, sore nipples
If baby’s position seems fine and it’s
still painful for you to breastfeed, your
nipples may be dry, cracked or sore.
Cracked nipples can be the result of
many different things: thrush, dry skin,
improper pumping, etc.. During the first
week of breastfeeding, you may have
bloody discharge when your baby is just
learning to latch or you are just beginning
to pump - this won’t harm your baby,
though, so you need not worry.
Assuming that you no longer have
latching on problems, try breastfeeding
more frequently, and at shorter
intervals. The less hungry baby is, the
softer his sucking will be.
When it comes to treating your dry and
cracked nipples, resist using products
14 BabyTalk | August 2019

Breastfeeding
challenges conquered!
in your medicine cupboard, unless of course, they’re gentle and organic. Soaps
and conventional lotions or creams are a no-no. Try letting some of your milk stay
on your nipples to air dry after feeding (the milk actually helps heal them). Other
than that, you can also try a good nipple cream in between feedings to keep them
moisturised and prevent them from getting dry, cracked and sore. Remember to
never use soap to wash your nipples, and always use comfortable, lose clothing.
If the pain is unbearable, consult your doctor - he may be able to prescribe a safe
painkiller which you can take half an hour before nursing - it may help while your
nipple takes time to heal and get accustomed to regular feedings.
Inverted nipples
There is a simple way to tell if you happen to have inverted nipples, and that’s by
doing the ‘pinch test’. Gently pinch your areola with your thumb and index finger
and observe — your nipple should protrude. If it retracts, it indicates that you have
what’s called inverted (or flat) nipples. This could present some problems when
breastfeeding, but nothing that can’t be overcome.
Try using a good breast pump to get the milk flowing before placing baby at your
nipple and use breast shells between feeds. Once you feel like your milk supply is
adequate, you can also use nipple shields to help baby latch on better.
Note too, that if you begin to feel
feverish due to this, consult with your
doctor at once, for you may have an
infection. Apart from that, try feeding
your baby more frequently. You can
also try pumping your breast after
each feed to ensure that they empty
out properly while waiting for the next
feed. Lastly, ensure that you’re wearing
a proper nursing bra - one which fits
you well and has good support.
Mastitis
Mastitis is a bacterial infection in your
breasts marked by flu-like symptoms
such as fever and pain in your breasts.
As serious as it sounds, it’s actually
safe to nurse your baby when you
have mastitis, whereby most doctors
recommend that you do, to help speed
up recovery.
Mastitis is common within the first few
weeks after birth, although it may also
happen later. It is caused by prolonged
clogged milk ducts, or engorgement.
While hot compresses and frequent
emptying of the breast via pumping or
feeding helps a lot, antibiotics may be
needed if it prolongs, so consult with
your doctor if you are worried.
Clogged milk ducts
Milk ducts in a nursing mom’s breasts may clog up and cause pain and soreness to
the touch. A hard lump may also be visible, sometimes accompanied by reddening
of the skin around it. Ducts clog when your milk isn’t draining completely, or too
much time is passing between feeds. Warm compresses and breast massages are
Breastfeeding
challenges conquered!
Everything you need for comfortable breastfeeding
Nursing bras: You’ll need
a few good nursing bras,
including sleeping ones.
Choose bras without
complicated designs. Keep
in mind what’s important
right now, and that’s
convenience, comfort and
ease of use. Make sure that your
nursing bra offers easy access to your breasts
and that you’re able to manage while holding
your baby with one hand.
Nipple shields: These will
come in handy if you have
nipple pains, or inverted
nipples.
Nursing pads: You can get
these in either disposable
or reusable varieties.
They help to prevent
embarrassing leaks due to
milk-filled breasts.
Nipple cream: An indispensable
item to have at hand to treat dry, cracked
nipples, and also to keep them moisturised.
Breast cooling pads: When
the breasts are engorged,
they can feel hot and
uncomfortable. Breast
cooling pads will help cool
them down.
Nursing pillow: It may not
be an absolute necessity,
but having one will help
eliminate any aches and
pains from holding your baby
in one position for too long.
It can be propped or placed
in various positions according to
your needs, to help provide you with more
comfort and ease while you breastfeed. Tip:
Ask your midwife to help you position your baby
comfortably during your first feed.
Breast pump: Pumping your
breast will help regulate the
flow of milk. It can also be
useful when you need to
pump out your milk to allow
another person to feed
your baby in your absence.
There are many breast pumps
available in the market and you
should choose one that suits your needs best.
Breastmilk storage bags: You’ll need lots of
these if you’re going to pump out your milk for
future use. These bags will allow you to refrigerate
or freeze your breast milk till it’s time to use it.
Feeding bottles and accessories: Although
you’re breastfeeding your baby, these may come
in handy when in case you need to pump out
your milk and let others feed your baby.
Steriliser: A good quality
steriliser is an excellent
item to have, for it will
keep important feeding
items clean and sterilised.
Breastfeeding
challenges conquered!
When baby keeps
sleeping at
the breasts
Well, babies normally
do sleep a whole lot for
the first few months of
their lives, hence falling
asleep while being fed
is quite common. If it
becomes an issue for you
however, start off at the
fuller breast, then switch
to the other breast
sooner, rather than later.
Also, as soon as you
notice your baby’s
sucking slowing down
and if his eyes look
like they’re closing,
remove him from
your breast and try
to burp him, tickle his
feet, or gently ‘talk’ to
him while rubbing his
back. Remember to
switch breast when you
continue to nurse him
after that. Your baby
will not be in this ‘sleepy’
phase for too long, so
don’t worry!
Nursing your baby outside
Once you leave your home with a nursing baby, it can be assumed that unless you
can manage to hurry back for the next feeding session, you may have to end up
nursing your baby outside of your home. If you’re concerned about modesty (most
of us Asians are), make sure you have a nursing poncho (nursing cover) on standby.
This will keep things discreet as baby happily feeds undercover!
Alternatively, you could also pump your breast milk and take a supply with you, and
bottle feed your baby. However, this is only advisable when your baby has already
been adapted to switching between bottle feeding and direct breastfeeding.
A well-stocked nursing bag
We may also refer to this as a diaper bag, and there are so many to choose from
out there. As you’ll be carrying it with you each time you leave home with your
baby, you might as well invest in one that’s going to serve you well. When picking
one out, don’t forget that convenience is just as important as style, mama! It’ll be
good to ensure that you can organise your baby’s things well enough to be able to
reach in a grab them without any trouble.
Decide on which suits you best - a backpack, a tote or a messenger/sling bag.
Check for insulated pockets - it should have at least one, to keep your baby’s bottle
warm (or keep your drinks cold!). Some modern nursing bags also feature an easyaccess
wet-tissue dispenser pocket, as well as other extras such as a changing mat,
an extra compartment for soiled clothing, anti-theft straps, etc.
The most important thing to remember when you go looking for a nursing bag is
that it should be comfortable and convenient to carry along with you wherever you
go with your baby, and it should also be easy to locate the things you need!
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
}
Should education on nutrition be a subject in
preschools and kindergartens in the future, seeing
that more and more people are getting ill from
obesity, diabetes, etc at a younger age these days? ~
In preschools, or even older schools such as primary and
secondary schools, a child is impressionable. What the child
experiences can have a profound impact on habit and belief
formation. A recurring class on nutrition provides awareness
and cultivates healthy attitude about nutrition. It teaches a
child from young the importance of feeding and nourishing
our body with nutritious foods and ingredients.
On the other hand, eating healthily paints only half the picture
of good health. It is vital that we teach our child to move his/
her body daily and to develop a positive body image.
This is why I myself place utmost importance in setting
up a fun and sheltered playground so that children have
access to run free and socialize, rain or shine, in a safe and
secure environment. We dedicate at least 30% of our daily
schedule to creative play. Scheduling in regular pockets
of time for play, socializing, creative activities add to the
productivity of our child.
This seems trivial but plants an important belief that life
is about balance. Our child learns the tools to build and
maintain their fitness and good health.
In a nutshell, offering nutrition as a learning subject is a step
in the right direction to promote positive health outcomes. It
would, however, be more powerful to incorporate measures
to make healthy lifestyle a belief and way of life.
The greatest wealth in life is our health.
Good health is a vital component of life. A healthy body
includes a sharp productive mind, agility and energy to
pursue our dreams.
Obesity as well as diabetes are negative outcomes in
health. Negative health outcomes happen when there is a
disconnection between what our body needs and what we
do with our body.
Good outcomes in health depends on two conditions:
i. What we put into our body
ii. What we do with our body
homegrown brand
BabyOrganix
Always True, Never Compromising
Modern consumers who wish to make serious lifestyle changes for themselves and their families know all too
other products brazenly labeled as ‘natural’. Through the entire BabyOrganix range, Malaysians can always take
great care of themselves and their families without double-guessing their choice of product and without harming
Healthy Baby
Disposable Diaper
Bb Diapers ®
Created To Care For A Baby’s Skin
Disposable diapers have experienced a lot of bad press in the past, one of the main reasons being that they are
not kind enough to be used on a baby’s skin. In most cases, this is due to poor performance when it comes to a
diaper’s absorbency power which will cause prolonged wetness to a baby’s bottom, leading to nappy rashes.
Proudly homegrown here in Malaysia, and after seven years of detailed planning and preparation, Bb Diapers ®
has stepped up to prove that through the right technology and high standard of production, it’s possible to
create a line of diapers that can be used safely and confidently for babies without harming their skin. The first
in Malaysia to use a 100% Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) Core Technology, Bb Diapers ® feature a base that has
30% more absorption power compared to traditional wood pulp material in other disposable diapers in the
market. They are also lighter in weight, providing additional comfort as well as freedom of movement to a
growing baby. Bb Diapers ® allow optimum air circulation to provide dry comfort via its Breathable Backsheet,
which keeps baby’s skin healthier, where else its Triple Leaking Protection ensures that nothing leaks out. It’s as
healthy as it can get as far as disposable baby diapers go!
There’s No Need To Tolerate Indoor Pollutants
There has always been a misconception that polluted air only comes from the outdoors, such as in the city, factory
time we spend indoors, the more unhealthy it is for us! This is where Blueair, a range of high performance air
purifiers come in to literally make it safer for us to breathe indoors. The range consists of a series of sleek air
purifying machines that uses the HEPASilent technology which marries electrostatic and mechanical filtration
effectiveness of intervention. The ABA (applied behaviour analysis) therapy, which is the “gold standard” in
speech delays, ADHD, ADD, behavioral challenges and social challenges. ABC adheres to international standards
Toddlers curriculum
Trinity Kids
Meeting The Needs Of The Most Demanding Age Group
The toddler years are some of the most challenging years for parents. Although learning is rapid during the
toddler ages, you’ll find that little ones have very short attention span and they’ll possess the kind of energy
that seem to go on and on. To enroll them into enrichment centres, parents would have to ensure that their
needs are met in every aspect so as to enhance their development. Trinity Kids Toddlers Class is a fine example
of how toddlers should be spending a large part of their day. Its conducive and stimulating environment is
designed to take into account a child’s cognitive and physical development and needs. The classes are run
by trained professionals who are passionate about their job, whereby their time is wholly dedicated to
ensuring the best care and early education for little ones. Plus, with Malaysia’s first Dr Sears Health Coach
in Family Nutrition as its Founder and in-house Chef, parents can ensure that their little ones are fed nothing
but the best meals and snacks. It’s no wonder that parents start inquiring about these classes at Trinity Kids
while still pregnant!
Gossip and
drama
in your
mommy circle
Remember all those secondary school days filled
with gossip of who likes who, and who did what?
And who can forget too, the school rumor starter,
who somehow always had the juiciest gossip to
share? Now that you’re a mommy with lots of
things to do with your life, thank goodness those
days are long gone. Or are they?
68 BabyTalk | August 2019

Life & Style
Feature
Watch out for the
drama queen
Chances are high that among your
circle of friends, there is at least one
individual who loves drama and
probably the attention that comes with
creating that drama too. Chances are,
she may be intimidating and has a
penchant for making others agree with
her, one way or another. Individuals
such as these, as you probably have
already come to learn, seem to always
have the latest ‘news’, most of which
no one has ever heard of before.
Unfortunately, the reason why no one
heard of them is probably because
they’re probably nothing but rumours,
and she’s probably the source.
Things can get rough when there is a
drama queen in your mommy clique,
for such individuals either see their
friends as accomplices or as targets.
It’s safe to say at this point that you’d
probably care for neither, for all
you’re looking for is to spend some
time with moms who have the same
interests as you.
If she happens to be a part of a
mommy clique which you hope to
spend some quality time with, you may
have to be extra careful around her,
or risk being dragged into dramas you
did not create, making you look as bad
as her. If you’re a target, well, you’ll
know it straight away when she and
her ‘sidekicks’ snub you, belittle you,
etc. Neither of these are good positions
to be in, especially when all you want
is to establish meaningful connections
and friendships with other moms in the
neighbourhood.
You don’t have to be part of it, you
know, for it’s not such a hopeless
situation as it seems! Here’s how you
can deal with a drama mama.
Understanding
the drama
queen
The thing with drama
mamas is, they’re rarely
interested in the kind of
friendships that other
moms want to cultivate.
A friend, to her, is a
willing accomplice to
her malice and more
often than not, she is
determined to be the
queen bee of her clique.
When drama and come
gossip knocking
When it comes to circulating
gossip, do remember that silence is
often interpreted as agreement or
participating. So, you may think you’re
in the clear by just sitting quietly and
nodding away at her stories, but you’re
not doing yourself any favours! Instead,
voice out a carefully and diplomatically
worded statement that you feel it’s best
that you and her not talk about others
when they’re not there to explain their
alleged wrongdoing or situation. After
all, the subject of her gossip isn’t there
to defend herself, is she?
If that fails to stop her from going on,
then it’s time you moved on from there.
It may seem rude to excuse yourself
abruptly, but believe us, it’s either that
or risk being sucked into that wild and
ugly whirlwind of gossip that is unlikely
to end well. You may not be able to
diffuse it, but at least, you’ll have
nothing to do with it!
BabyTalk | August 2019 69

Life & Style
Feature
Entertain no
malicious talk
Drama mama can’t create trouble on
her own. She’ll always need to have
someone on her side to either validate
her actions or take the fall for them.
So, if this unscrupulous individual
happens to call you up for a prattle
about another mother’s marital issues,
or the way someone dresses, diffuse
the topic and change the subject at
once. Remember, even if she’s the only
one talking, just by giving her your ears
could mean being implicated if this
gossip ever gets out of hand.
Never, ever take the easy way out
and agree with a gossip queen or tell
her what she wants to hear, for, at
the end of the day, it spells nothing
but heartache and possibly a loss of
friendship for you.
She may be super-nice
to you, but...
If a drama mama is busy spreading
rumours about another mom, you’re
being pretty naive if you think she’s
not doing the same about you behind
your back. So, for one, be very careful
about the conversations that take
place between the two of you or in
her presence. Resist sharing personal
views about anything or anyone with
this individual, much less personal
information about yourself, for you can
be sure she will use it against you in
the future. Of course, if you can help
it, keeping away from her as much as
possible will be the safest bet.
Oh no, she hates me!
There is no way one can be a target of
malice and not know it. Gossip has a
way of coming around and you’ll know
what’s going around about you once
it comes back to you. It’s not a nice
position to be in at all, but you don’t
have to suffer the consequences if you
knew how to get around it.
Anger has never done anyone any
good. In fact, it’s one of the most
unhealthiest emotions. Your body
will tell you when you are about to
boil over. Maybe your heart thumps
and races, you feel hot, or terribly
bothered. Know the signs that you’ve
had enough and remove yourself from
the situation.
Remember, this is real life and
unlike reality TV shows, you’re not
contractually obligated to stay and ride
out a situation that is bad. If you hear or
overhear a piece of gossip about you, it
doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, you can
always excuse yourself and walk away.
You don’t have to waste your precious
emotional energy on trying to justify
anything. So, if you feel that there’s just
no end of a drama mama’s tirades, hey,
it’s not your problem! Just forget about
her and mind your own thing. After all,
you do have a beautiful family to care
for, right?
Take home message: At the end
of the day, gossip and drama
among friends are just not worth
the consequences, so no matter
how interesting or outrageously
newsworthy a gossip seems to be, say
you’ve got something urgent to tend
to, get up and walk away!
You’re never
alone
Even adults get hit with
feelings of “not fitting
in” and it can affect us
badly. That’s when it’s
time to seek out and
make some new friends.
Remember too, that
like attracts like, so if
you’re truly against
mean moms and drama
queens, you’ll attract
the kind of friends
who think like you too,
provided you make it
clear that you’ll have no
part in mama dramas.
Bump to Birth
Giving Birth
When the time is
near and instinct
takes over
For most pregnant women, a natural instinct takes over somewhere in the third
trimester of their pregnancy, where there will be feeling an intense urge to prepare
their home for a baby’s arrival. This is called the nesting instinct, whereby even animals
go through this. Just do whatever it is you need to do, mama!
BabyTalk | August 2019 71

Bump to Birth
Giving Birth
What will your family eat (When
you’re in the hospital)?
Some moms like to prepare a week’s worth of meals in
advance so that their family members will be well-fed
during the first few days of their confinement and they’ll
not have to depend on outside food. Preparing some of
your family’s favourite dishes in advance and storing them in
the refrigerator will keep their tummies happy and satisfied
while you recuperate, rest and take care of the newest
family member.
This nesting mode is usually fuelled by bursts of energy during
the last stages of pregnancy and the intense need to sort
things out before the baby arrives. Due to this instinct, you
might feel like taking on every little cleaning and organising
task there is around the house. Just be sensible and don’t go
overboard! Avoid climbing up ladders, stretching too much to
reach anything or lifting heavy stuff.
Keep in mind that feeling like doing stuff does not necessarily
mean knowing what’s worth the energy and what’s not, or
what’s reasonable and what’s over-the-top. This drive to get
things done might even render some moms-to-be a bit fuzzybrained.
For example, many moms who indulge in heavy
shopping during this period tend to end up with a whole lot
of redundant baby stuff that are not worth the price tags.
If you happen to be heavily pregnant and feel the nesting
instinct taking over, make the most of it! Let’s see if we can
help sort out some of the tasks that most moms will want to
check off their list.
Sort out the laundry
Anything that needs to be thrown in the wash can be done
now. Wash and dry the floor rugs, towels, your nursing wear
and baby’s clothes. If you plan to have your mom or MIL stay
over during your confinement, sort out the spare sheets and
towels too. Believe us, once your baby arrives, you may not
have the time for it.
Last minute house cleaning
There’s no better time to do this then now while your nesting
instinct is on the roll. If your windows need wiping or the
furniture needs dusting, you might as well see to them while
you still have the energy and drive! If you allocate a whole day
for this, you can easily take it from section to section and room
to room. Be sensible though in this cleaning quest, and listen
to your body - Stop when you feel uncomfortably tired and
never let yourself get to the point of being short of breath.
Kitchen and pantry stock check
Even if you plan to have your mom, MIL or even a
confinement lady to come over and cook your meals for you
after giving birth, the rest of your household needs to eat
(and snack!) too. In any case, there is no harm in stocking up
your pantry as well as refrigerator. A trip to the supermarket
might be in order, so get your pen and paper and start
writing a shopping list.
Final touches to the nursery
If you have a nursery for your baby, you’ll want to see if
there is anything else that needs to be done, or if it needs
any rearranging. Is your nursing chair in the right spot with
your nursing gear in place? Have you hung up all those lovely
baby posters you bought some time ago? Or perhaps baby’s
clothing have not been arranged in the closet yet? Well,
might as well see to these things now, mama.
Baby’s essentials
Being in the nesting mode isn’t just about preparing the ideal
homecoming for your precious little one. Many moms tend
to also get into a shopping frenzy for baby stuff such as baby
toiletries, clothes, bedding, diapers and everything else that
should be ready before the newborn arrives. If by any chance
your car seat isn’t installed yet or your haven’t bought a baby
carrier and/or stroller yet, this will be the best time to do so!
Hospital bag final check
Here’s a bag that gets rearranged and re-stocked over and
over again. After all, not every mom can easily make up her
mind on what to put on for her newborn baby when it’s time
to bring him or her home. Apart from newborn clothes, what
else should go into your hospital bag? Determine, write them
down, and sort it out to your heart’s content.
Prepare for your
confinement
Some moms spend their first few days in
special confinement centers where just about
everything is done for them. Most moms though,
spend this crucial period of their lives at home.
Assuming you’re one of the latter, do spare a
thought on what you need to facilitate your
confinement period to help you bounce back
faster. Is your confinement lady booked? If your
mom or MIL will be looking after you, do they
have everything they need? Seeing to these
things now while you still have time will help
ensure that things run smoothly for you after
giving birth.
Baby & Toddler
Early Education & Development
Help Your Child
be Confident
Sensible and smart parenting ways can help build better confidence in little ones. Not
all children have the same traits and most times, parents have to deal with different
characters even among their own children. If your child seems to lack confidence or
seems too shy, this piece is for you.
1. Criticising never works
Your child needs to know that you can be depended upon
for support and understanding when she's feeling insecure,
so criticising her will not help at all. Don't label her either, for
it will not help if you keep declaring to others that she's shy.
2. Encourage happiness
There must be something that your shy toddler likes to do.
Be it a certain kind of game, or a dance you do together at
home, or even colouring,
scribbling or drawing.
Try involving her in an
enrichment program that
she enjoys. That way,
she'll meet other children
with similar interests
and she may be able to
forget or ignore her own
shyness and focus on the
activity instead.
3. Your child hs a right to make
mistakes
There is a big difference between rudeness and shyness and
since you already know your kid is shy, you do not need
to keep apologising if she does not respond when she is
spoken to. Constant apologising and making of excuses
for her behavior only serves to degrade her and focus
everyone's attention to her shyness, which does little to
help her overcome it.
4. don't rush to correct
With a little tact, and lots of encouragement from you,
your child may be coaxed out of her shell. Try to discover
what's making her feel shy and from there, you may, with
your innate maternal instinct, help her work it out.
5. Keep it interesting
Tell her a story, either a true one or a made-up one, of a
time in your life when you too lived with extreme feelings of
shyness. Create if you must, examples of situations much like
what she's experiencing now. Work your story up to how
you overcame your shyness and how everything changed for
the better for you. This will reassure her that she's not that
abnormal and that this shyness can be overcome.
6. Be a role model
If you're an exceptionally shy person yourself, you'll have to
work on it for you are your child's greatest role model! Try
your best to overcome this tendency to be super-shy, if not
for yourself, then for your kid who's watching and learning
from you. As much as you can, do model confident,
outgoing behaviour for your child to follow.
7. Ease her worries
The last thing a shy kid needs is a whole lot of attention on
her. So, start by dressing her in a way that she will blend
right in instead of standing out among a group of friends.
This way, she will feel more at ease to participate in play
and other activities.
Wonders Of Childhood
What will you serve
at you toddler’s
birthday party?
Have you been to a toddler’s
birthday party lately? They seem
to cater more for the parents than
the little ones don’t they - foodwise,
that is? Could one of the
reasons be that there’s not that
many appropriate or ‘safe’ choice
of food to be offered to little ones?
Let’s face it… When it comes to planning a birthday
party, most of us would rather just choose the easiest
way to do it when it comes to the food we plan to serve.
We either cater our fare or whip up some non-labourintensive
offerings such as pasta, finger sandwiches, fried
rice, maybe even some chicken wings, etc. How about a
toddler’s party then? If our choices are akin to the above,
then it’s surely not the little ones’ appetite we’re looking
to satisfy.
It’s a tricky thing, planning a suitable yet interesting fare
for a toddler’s birthday party, but if you’re going to go
through it, you might as well do it well and give them a
party to remember! Here are a few ideas you may like to
try. We suggest you give them a go a few weeks before
the actual party day, so you’ll know how to adjust the
taste, amount, variations, etc.
Cornflakes chicken tenders
• 3/4 cup plain flour
• 2 eggs
• 1 cup cornflake crumbs
• 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves
• 40g packet French onion soup mix
• 16 (1kg) chicken tenderloins, trimmed
• Sweet chili sauce or tomato sauce, to serve
Method:
1. Line two baking trays with baking paper.
2. Place flour on a plate.
3. Whisk eggs in a shallow bowl. Combine cornflake
crumbs, parsley and soup mix in another shallow bowl.
4. Lightly coat chicken in flour, shaking off excess. Dip
in egg, followed by crumb mixture, pressing crumbs
on with fingertips to secure.
5. Place chicken on
prepared tray.
Refrigerate for 30
minutes.
6. Preheat oven to 200°C
7. Spray chicken with
oil and bake for 20
halfway during cooking,
or until golden and
cooked through.
8. Serve with yogurt or
• 2 tablespoons olive
• Yogurt or tomato ketchup, to serve
Method:
1. Sift the combined flours and salt into a large bowl. Add
the corn, carrot, zucchini and cheddar and stir to combine.
2. Whisk the egg and milk together in a jug. Add to the flour
mixture and stir to combine.
3. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frypan over medium heat.
Pour three 1/4-cupfuls (60ml) of mixture into the pan and
cook for two minutes or until bubbles rise to the surface.
4. Use a spatula to turn and cook for a further 1-2 minutes
or until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to
a plate.
5. Repeat in three more batches with remaining batter. It
should make about 12 pancake-like fritters.
Biscuits with Icing
Ingredients:
• 250g plain white flour
• 85g golden caster sugar
• 175g unsalted butter, at room temperature, cubed
• 2 tbsp lemon curd
• 250g white icing sugar
• 1 tbsp strawberry jam
Method:
1. Heat oven to 180C
2. Put the flour, sugar and butter into a food processor.
Whizz until the mixture forms crumbs, then pulse a
little more until it forms a ball.
3. Dust with a little flour onto your work surface or
rolling block and turn the dough onto it. Roll out to
about the thickness an Oreo cookie, for example.
4. Cut out your cookies with a cookie cutter place onto
the baking sheet.
5. Bake for 10 mins until pale golden. Cool on a wire
rack.
6. Put the lemon curd into a bowl with two tbsp boiling
water and mix until smooth.
7. Sieve in 175g of
the icing sugar; stir
together to make a
smooth icing. Put
the strawberry fruit
spread in another
bowl and add two
tsp boiling water,
mix, then sieve in the
remaining icing sugar.
8. Spoon the lemon
icing over the biscuits,
then drizzle or pipe
over the pinky icing.
Leave to set for at
least 20 mins.
9. These biscuits keep
for up to two days in
an airtight tin, longer
if left un-iced.
Baby & Toddler
Nutrition
How can a child
learn to eat
healthy?
Let’s face it - eating healthy is something even adults struggle with, even though it’s
something totally doable! It’s no secret these days that eating the right kinds of food
will help keep all sorts of illnesses at bay, and the younger a person develops the
taste for healthy foods, the better! So, if you would like your child to walk the route
of healthy eating, the time to start is now!
76 BabyTalk | August 2019

Baby & Toddler
Nutrition
Nutrition should always remain a top priority, even after
a baby weans off breast milk. This is the time baby
transitions into toddlerhood and when parents will
find themselves busy shifting gears to accommodate a
new era where their toddlers venture into independent
eating and drinking. It’s easy to give up at this point,
and just give your child whatever he asks for, even if
it’s not good for him, but remember, children develop
eating habits really easily at this age,
especially if there are sweet tasting food
involved! If you think your little one is
beginning to have a penchant
for sweet drinks and food, get a
hold of this situation and turn it
around before it gets out of hand!
Tip: Offer fruits instead of candy, cake
or sweet drinks.
The crucial first bites &
developing tastebuds
Between 12-24 months, toddlers will begin to learn
what it's like to eat solid food. They'll be introduced to
new tastes and textures. Variety is the key to ensuring a
toddler gets the nutrition needed to thrive and develop
well. For this to happen, parents have to be mindful
of the food offered to their little ones and strive to get
them introduced to as many new wholesome foods
as possible! Tip: Start off the first week or two with
pureed vegetables instead of fruits, for you don’t want
your baby to refuse new foods just because they’re not
sweet-tasting as what they had the first time. Getting
babies to like the taste of vegetables is harder than
getting them to like fruits, so, it will help immensely to
hold off the latter for as long as you can.
Encourage, don’t force
If your toddler isn't hungry, it just means that his or her
body does not need the extra energy! This is especially
so if the little one is happily playing, seems to be fine
and is not seriously ill. So, there is really no need to
bribe a bub to clean off that plate, and there is certainly
no need to lose your cool either! Remember too, that
you really do not want your little one to associate
mealtime with anxiety and frustration. Forcing toddlers
to eat when they’re not hungry also weakens their
sensitivity to their own hunger and fullness cues.
Keep portions small - if they
want more, you’ll know
Many parents are guilty of piling up their children's
plate with food, especially if they're serving a favourite,
in hopes of tricking them into eating more. The result?
Most of the time, the little ones are overwhelmed and
are also denied the opportunity to independently ask
for more.
Keep proper mealtimes
As far as possible and if their appetite allows it,
toddler's meals and snacks should ideally be served
at the same time every day. Milk or diluted fruit juice
may be offered with these meals or snacks, but in
between them, water will be the best thirst quencher
for growing bodies. Note: Watch that your toddler
does not overload on juice, milk or snacks throughout
the day, for that might decrease his or her appetite for
nutritious meals.
Be patient (with new foods)
It's highly unlikely that you would remember your own
experiences with new foods when you were a tiny tot,
but chances are high that you didn't take too easily
with certain foods. Your toddler is no different and has
the right to take his or her time to determine if they like
a certain food after trying it out. It's not uncommon
for toddlers to touch or smell new foods, taste them
and then take them back out again. Some
toddlers might also need repeated
exposure to a new food before they
even take the first bite!
You can offer encouragement to
your child by talking about a food's
color, shape, aroma and texture. If you
have to talk about the taste, always maintain positive
descriptions. Also, try serving new foods in the same
plate with your little one's favorite foods.
Why milk should stay
Milk should always remain an important part of a
toddler's diet for it provides calcium and vitamin D to
help build strong bones. Toddlers
should have 700 milligrams of
calcium daily, and to help absorb
this, 600 IU (International Units)
of vitamin D a day should
accompany it. This calcium
need is met if kids get at least
two servings of dairy foods
every day. As for the vitamin
D, doctors sometimes
recommend vitamin D
supplements, for the
daily requirement
is not easily met
through dairy foods.
Kids between the
age of 12 to 36
months old should be
offered a good quality milk formula
to help provide the dietary fats they need for better
growth and brain development.
Baby & Toddler
Love For Life
Since they were born,
children are listening
and learning from their
surrounding every
waking hour of their lives.
They are listening to you
too, and hanging on to
most of what you say. So,
remember, what comes
out of your mouth as their
parent or caregiver has an
impact on them whether
or not you realise it.
The way most of us
naturally are
We can’t help it - it’s probably the way we
ourselves were brought up, but a large
part of what we say to our children seem
to have a strong disciplinary air about
it - we tend to say ‘no’ quite a lot. It’s
probably why ‘no’ is one of the first words
a baby picks up - sometimes before he can
even say ‘mummy’ or ‘daddy’!
Let’s take a look now at some things we
say to our children without thinking, and
what their consequences are.
12 things
you should never say
to little ones
78 BabyTalk | August 2019

Baby & Toddler
Love For Life
1. That’s NOT how you do it - I’ll show
you how.
Automatically taking over from
whatever a child is doing, just because
it’s not being done right (or right by
your book), isn’t helping him at all.
We’ve all either experienced this in
our lives or have said it to our child.
It gives a message to your little one
that only adults are capable of doing
things right and it may eat into his self
confidence at trying new things and
learning from mistakes. Instead, he’ll
be anticipating an adult to intercede
and do it the right way.
2. I’m really disappointed in you
It’s sad to think that these words are
often spoken to kids at times when
they already feel bad about either
doing something wrong, or failing at
something they were trying to do. Kids
need to be comforted, forgiven and be
given encouragement through life’s
ups and downs, and not be condemned
for ‘failing’. Although it’s natural to feel
disappointed when your child doesn’t
do as well as you expected him to, trying
to make them responsible for your
disappointment only adds to their pain.
Note too, that most times, some sort of
competitive attitude you may have with
other parents may be to blame for how
you feel, so try addressing that instead.
them to believe that they should never
trust their feelings and their perceptions
are always wrong. The ability to show
emotions is the key to understanding
how feelings work, before addressing
them, e.g. finding and understanding the
cause, comforting, reassuring, etc. If these
are not part of your parenting life, you
child could end up missing something
meaningful during this precious growing
years. Remember, compassion is what
the world needs more of, and if you feel
uncomfortable reading this, it wouldn’t
harm to do a little self check, for the sake
of your child.
4. Leave me alone!
This may sound harmless, especially
if your child is driving you up the wall
with his endless requests and needs,
but if you keep repeating this, the
message that may be internalised by
your little one might be that he or she is
a nuisance who does not deserve your
help or attention. If you’re not quick to
remedy this situation, in time, if they
have issues in life that need urgent
attention and care, they’ll have second
thoughts about turning to you for help.
Surely, that’s not what you want?
3. You’re being too sensitive
This is a common phrase used
among parents who are emotionally
disconnected themselves (read: they tend
to show little or no emotion towards events
in life). Telling a child who is feeling sad,
down or upset that he or she should not
be feeling so, is, in a way, akin to telling
them their feelings are not important to
you. Or, worse still, if they happen to be
a very sensitive individual, it may lead
Baby & Toddler
Love For Life
5. You did great the other time, so
what happened this time?
When a compliment is followed by
a negative remark, children tend
to focus on the negative statement.
Well, wouldn’t you, if you were in
their shoes? All the initial positive
reinforcement, boost of self confidence
and motivation gained from the
compliment are lost as soon as the latter
comes in to crush them. Keep in mind
that your child is under your guidance
and care, and what you think of them
matters a lot to them. At the end of the
day, they too are only humans who
should be allowed to fall and rise again
without being judged by the one they
love the most.
6. You better stop making me angry
One of the main rules of parenting is
to stay calm no matter what happens.
Aside from the fact that we usually
say things we later regret when we're
angry or frustrated, staying calm also
demonstrates to children how we
want them to behave. This is especially
important for parents of kids who tend
to get easily upset.
7. It’s not a big deal
Even if something isn't a big deal to you,
it can be a big deal to your child. Telling
them that it isn't invalidates and shames
them for their emotions. Not only are
they then upset about the original issue,
but they're ashamed or embarrassed
about how upset you are on top of that.
These comments never helped anyone
– children or adults – actually feel
better or calm down.
8. You’re too fat
Children who are overweight or obese
can benefit from nutritional changes;
but calling a child fat is hurtful and
does nothing in providing guidance
for how to slim down. Negative
body labeling and shaming feed into
a culture of disordered eating and
unhealthy body images. At the end
of the day, you may want to remind
yourself that there is always a reason
why your child ended up overweight….
and address it accordingly.
Baby & Toddler
Love For Life
9. Why are you so lazy?
Children are rarely lazy for it is
naturally against their nature to be
so. In fact, as parents, it’s our duty to
actually provide them with activities
to keep them moving! So, perhaps
instead of accusing, you should be
wondering, what went wrong here?
Often, there's an underlying reason as
to why they aren't able to accomplish
what's being asked of them. As a parent,
you are actually attacking your child's
self-esteem and self-worth with this
statement. And let's face it, none of us
have ever been motivated to do better
by being called lazy.
10. Stop being such a baby
You can't expect kids to act like adults
because they're not adults. If a child
is exhibiting a behavior that seems
babyish, look at the situation. Often
they revert to old behaviors when
they're nervous, anxious, or scared.
Instead of shaming them, listen to
what they have to say, and help them
address their feelings - that would go a
long way in helping them regulate their
emotions as they grow and develop.
11. Don’t make me tell your dad/mom
about this
‘Telling the other parent’, just like time
out or taking things away and other
threats are often default discipline
techniques that most of us practice
without much thought. It seems to
work, for a while. When a parent sets
a limit however, they should always
be prepared to follow through, so don't
threaten anything you won't actually
do, like turn the car around on a trip to
somewhere special, because your child
isn’t behaving. In fact, setting a limit
and not following through may actually
serve to maintain rather than repair
unbecoming behaviours in children.
12. Do you know how sad you’re
making me feel now?
Children are not responsible for their
parents' emotional well-being! (read:
parents are responsible for their
children's well-being, not the other
way around.) While it's important
for children to understand that their
behavior affects other people, it's
developmentally inappropriate and
emotionally strenuous to ask that they
act a certain way out of a sense of
responsibility for their parents' feelings.
House Proud
Six Simple Steps
To A Sustainable
Family Lifestyle
It’s encouraging to see that everywhere you look these days, families seem to be
adapting a greener, more sustainable lifestyle. You see more shoppers carrying
their own reusable bags, diners at restaurants whipping out their own metal
straws, more and more households separating and recycling their trash, etc. The
sustainable lifestyle is becoming a popular choice for many households these days
- if you haven’t jumped in yet, what are you waiting for?
82 BabyTalk | August 2019

Life & Style
House Proud
Going green (another term for adapting a sustainable
lifestyle) means so much more than just cutting back on stuff
- it’s also eco-friendly and helpful for the environment. In the
long run, it will save you money too, for if you’re truly all for
it, you’ll find yourself deliberately cutting back on electricity,
avoiding wastage in any way be it food or anything else, and
also, you’ll rethink the purchase and use of costly items in the
household that serve little purpose other than just adding on
to your belongings.
So, are you ready for some small changes? If so, you’ll soon
be discovering how exciting the challenges of going green
can be for your whole family, even for the little ones!
Here are some simple steps to get you on the right track.
Walk the talk first
If you intend to teach your children to live a green lifestyle,
go ahead and set a good example first. Children are greatly
influenced by their parents, and when they see their parents
showing care and consideration for the environment, animals,
and people with whom they share the world, they will
eventually follow suit. So, be a life-size example and watch
them grow up as experts in greener, more sustainable living.
For example, what would you normally do if your find a paper
cup left on the stool at a public park? If your child were to
observe you picking it up and placing it in the trash bin, even
if it wasn’t your piece of trash in the first place, he or she will
begin to understand the value of keeping public places clean,
especially if you do it often enough. When it comes to a lot
of things in life, your actions truly speak louder than words,
believe us!
To get them interested, get them
involved
Children are generally eager to contribute to grown-up
activities, so use this opportunity to teach them well! Have
them carry a small bucket of vegetable scraps to the compost
bin, or let them help sort your recycling, though you should
handle the potentially sharp edges on cans and glass. Older
children can also help with the gardening, the household
recycling or they may want to get involved with cleaning
up their neighborhood in our community gotong-royong
style! Make these kind of eco-friendly activities a family-time
priority and in no time, your kids will be taking the lead -
mission accomplished!
Evaluate and de-clutter
If you’ve watched and followed the petite Marie Kondo, a
Japanese woman who has a special knack for organising,
and who helps people declutter their lives, you’ll realise by
now that overloading your home and your life with material
things is hardly what you need to have a happy, meaningful
life. When it comes to anything at all, even toys for your
kids, choose quality over quantity. Think before making
any purchases and also, talk to family and friends about
not overwhelming children with too many gifts and about
checking with you first if they’re considering a big gift.
Encourage kids to donate toys and clothes they no longer use
to the less fortunate.
Encourage conservation
Explain to your kids the plus points of resource-conserving
habits such as switching off lights and turning off the water
when brushing their teeth. Remember though, that if these
are somewhat new concepts to them, it might take some
time to get used to. You did not change overnight, and you
shouldn’t expect your children to, either. Start with the things
that are easiest to change and remember that every little bit
helps. Add more changes gradually, and your family will soon
be living greener without even realizing it.
Grow some food!
Growing your own vegetables, composting, and mulching,
are all ways to contribute to a green environment in your
home. Eggshells, fruit rinds and coffee grounds are great for
compost. These are simple and easy tasks that will allow you
to cut down on waste, save money and reuse as well recycle
natural resources.
Make your own natural
household cleansers
Using natural cleansers or DIY cleansers that use household
items is also a step you can take. For example, you can clean
glass with vinegar and newspaper, or you can use baking
soda instead of scouring powder. You can also add three
tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice
(or even any citrus essential oil of your choice) to a spray
bottle filled with plain water and use it as a spray-and-wipe
for tables, kitchen counters, bathtubs, etc. These are things
that you may not think of much, but with a little research and
knowledge you’ll start to need less and less of the chemicalladen
cleaning solutions sold at the stores.
