New life for former wharf piles
By SHELLEY TOPP
Wooden pilesused to build Lyttelton’s
Cashin Quay 2wharf are beingrepurposed
for use at Christchurch’sFarmers’Market
development.
The timberwill be used for stalls, stair
treads and bar leaners at the market on
Oxford Terrace.
The Australianironbark piles became
available for recyclingafterthe wharf had
to be demolished because of severe
damage that occurred during the201011
Lyttelton Port Company by Sefton’s John
Fairweather SpecialtyTimber Solutions.
The firm favoursNew Zealandgrown
hardwoodsfor the products it makes,but
could not pass up the opportunity to
acquire the tough,durableAustralian
wood.
‘‘Whileweemphasisethe use of locally
grown eucalypts, we embracethe
repurposing of wharf piles which have
beeninservice in Canterbury for along
time,’’ John Fairweather says.
‘‘The piles have been in salt water for
about 50 years and they have lasted very
well.
‘‘Infact, when you cut one, the
heartwoodlooksquite fresh and if you tap
the end of the log it rings as if it were a
freshly cut log.
‘‘The logs are in good condition in part
because, when installed, the outsideof
eachlog was burnt and thentreated with
creosote.’’
Ironbarksget their name fromthe
normally hard, roughbark on theirtrunks
which stays dead on the trees, rather than
peelingoff, and is resistanttofire and
heat.
The Farmers Market work is alittle
unusualfor John’scompany,which
generally specialises in makinghardwood
products, suchassolidtimber flooring,
fromeucalyptustreesgrown in
Canterbury.
It is acommon misconceptionthat
eucalyptus trees are only good for
firewood because they have atendency to
split, John says.
‘‘They do splitbecause of the tensionin
the log.
‘‘However,careful milling and drying
can overcome thisproblem and this allows
us to produce high quality and stable
timber.’’
Imported hardwoods alsomake
excellent timber, he says. ‘‘But bringing
themtoNew Zealandhas alarge carbon
footprint and someoverseas hardwoods
which are claimed to be sustainably
produced are not whatthey are claimed to
be.’’
