COMPLETE BIKES 2015

Bike lovers rarely have just one bike, we all know the 

amount of bikes you can own is n+1 (n = number of bikes 

currently owned) but what if you could have one bike 

that could do it all? Hm..., yes you’ll probably still 

have more than one bike and this is simply because we 

love bikes. We love the occasion of riding the joy and 

satisfaction from each and every ride. We love having 

bikes to ‘tinker’ with, to compete on, to travel with, 

and of course that long term project bike. 

From the moment we started Bombtrack we said we would 

stick to one fundamental rule, to only make bikes we 

would love to own and ride, and that’s still the case 

today.

The Script has undergone a serious transformation, 

slicker meaner and more performance focused than 

before. The geometry is more aggressive, with steeper 

head and seat tube angles, the fork has a tapered

When we set out to create our steel cyclocross 

and criterium bikes we wanted to get some input 

from someone who has a proven track record 

for developing and honing performance bike 

geometries that simply work! 

We knew Olaf already through his bike design 

work at Koga and his accessory design company 

Wit Industries. It wasn’t long before we got talking 

as Olaf explains… 

a cyclist, even now that my whole life revolves 

around cycling. 

Educated as an industrial design engineer, I 

have been designing complete bikes, frames, 

geometries, parts and accessories all my 

working life. I got the chance to work on 

projects like designing the frame for one of the 

fastest ever track sprinters, Theo Bos, but I also 

made headlights and other parts like my foldable 

fender Fendor-Bendor and helped all kinds of 

bicycle companies with designing frame geo’s. 

I’ve been doing that for over a decade now.“ 

How did the project come about? 

“I guess we found each other in our love for 

cycling but also in a certain ‘unconventionalism’ 

the want for a no-nonsense approach to making 

really fast and fun bikes. Bombtrack coming 

from BMX and FGFS and having started only 

recently with geared and race related bikes, and 

me coming from designing carbon track frames for 

Olympic athletes and having moved to being involved 

in fixed gear criterium racing. And maybe being a bit 

bored with the traditional bicycle industry. I guess we 

met each other on these cross roads.“ 

In designing these bikes you have opted to use 

steel over other materials, why was this? 

“Why Steel? Because it works! It’s not the lightest, 

but can obviously be made light enough to be 

competitive in races. Especially in the fields of both 

the Needle and Hook: fixed gear racing and CX/gravel 

racing. It maintains its properties, steel frames feel 

like new decades after they were made, and it’s nice 

to have a bike you can grow old with and pass on 

to your grandchildren. Steel can be used to make 

a frame with a very direct feeling, yet maintaining 

riding comfort and control over the bumps. In fast 

fixed gear criteriums, which are often not on the 

smoothest of roads, the forgiving feel of steel can 

add lots of control in tight corners. And steel makes 

a bomb-proof frame that is there for hard use during 

your insane cycling projects and races.“ 

“So, after about a year of talking with the guys 

at Bombtrack, I was invited over to the office in 

Colgone to be briefed about the new models they 

were planning. I remember talking with the team for 

almost an entire day about the bikes which now have 

become the Needle and Hook.“ 

What is your background, how did you get into 

bike design? 

“I started cycling at a very young age, just like any 

other Dutch kid, but started doing it as sports since I 

was competing in speed skating on ice. I know, that’s 

also a very Dutch thing to do. In the summertime we 

trained on our road bikes to prepare for winter season. 

Maybe because I’ve always been cycling in service of 

other things, like training for another sports or just 

simply getting around, I’ve never considered myself 

You’ve been involved in criterium racing for a 

while now, right? 

“Yes, I’ve been working with Team F.A.S.T. Amsterdam 

as a manager and sponsor. This is the team around 

track racer and messenger legend Stefan «Fish» Vis, 

who is now successfully racing fixed gear criteriums. 

So successfully that he won the Red Hook Criterium, 

mother of all fixed crits, in Barcelona in 2013. I’ve 

gained lots of experience from working with them and 

from racing fixed gear bikes myself.“ 

So what was your concept for the Needle? 

“I wanted to give it smooth and stable handling, with 

just enough ‘twitchiness’ to be able to maneuver 

quickly and precisely. This fine balance will give it 

enough comfort for longer rides while still providing

the joy and control of a very responsive track 

geometry. It helps that it’s a steel frame, for reasons 

I’ve mentioned before: it combines a forgiving feel 

with being direct. 

The sizing of the bikes is based on its ‘reach’ and 

‘stack’, where I made sure that the larger sizes still 

are compact enough for direct handling.“ 

What was your approach to designing the Hook 

frame? 

“The starting point was to use a tube set that would 

allow us to create a super stiff lower section of the 

frame, coming from head tube all the way down to 

the rear axle and through the BB shell. Oversized 

head tube, for the tapered fork, and press fit BB30 

bottom bracket shell, gives lots of space to use 

oversized down tube and chain stays. This oversized 

‘lower frame’ allows for great transmission of leg 

power into propulsion. 

The upper part of the frame is made with much thinner 

tubing, providing comfort and control. 

We figured that the fact that it’s steel, it will 

inevitably be used for more than CX racing. Stefan 

‘Fish’ Vis has proven that it can even handle an 

entire off road Alp crossing. But we also see this as a 

winter road bike, or commuter. Or use it with luggage 

to go on a gravel/dirt adventure. The frame offers 

plenty of mud clearance, and even enough space 

to mount 40 mm tires, or use it with mudguards. 

The head tube angle and fork offset we chose 

lets you handle difficult terrain beautifully, but 

the tube setup and sitting position are definitely 

‘racey’.“

The Needle is a seriously tough track bike suitable for 

daily riding but with the performance to compete on 

the criterium race scene. Designed in partnership with 

Olaf Wit, the geometry is dialed in to perfection and the 

Reynolds 725 tubing ensures a rigid yet comfortable and 

light frame. The welded crmo forks are built for strength 

but the curved shape helps to soak up the bumps, giving 

you more control and the confidence to place the bike 

exactly where you want.

In any design process you have to go through 

a phase of testing and evaluation. Getting the 

feedback from the rider and accessing the bikes 

performance to identify areas that need further 

development. We were well aware that the Hook 

would be used for a lot more than just a leisurely 

weekend ride through the woods, so we looked for 

an event that would push the bike to the limit. 

The Transalp is a test of man and machine, spread 

over 7 days, with 600km and 19,000 vertical meters 

and 1,200 mountain bike riders it was the perfect 

proving ground. We had the bike but we needed 

a rider. Stefan ‘Fish’ Vis, had been giving input 

to Olaf and us in the development of the Hook, 

and as a rider always hungry for a new adventure 

and never one to shy away from challenging the 

conventions he was ‘the’ man for this challenge. 

A study of the entry requirements revealed there 

was nothing preventing us from entering a CX 

bike into the race, and although breaths were 

held through registration, the organizers were in 

complete support of this unconventional entry. 

It soon became obvious on asphalt sections Fish 

was able to overtake a huge bunch of riders. Fish 

explains; “Each uphill I overtook some 80-100 

riders, but at least half that amount overtook me 

on the next downhill section haha. Not seldom, I 

even had to make way to stay fair - somehow it 

became a running gag during the race days.“

“...The downhill sections were quiet horrible...Imagine the 

combination of my seat super high like a road racer with the 

brakelevers on the drop of the bar...My nose almost felt like 

it was touching the ground.“ 

The weather conditions in the mountains 

are always unpredictable and with two solid 

days of rain it made the challenge almost 

impossible. The narrow tires put Fish at a 

major disadvantage through the mud and 

down hill sections became perilous. 

Despite having the odds against him, Fish 

made it over the finishing line. It was an 

incredible achievement and the battle damage 

was only a pair of tires and a set of break 

pads. Fish had confirmed beyond doubt that 

the Hook has capabilities beyond which most 

riders will take it. Overall he was blown away 

by how capeable the bike was, “the bike is 

awesome, it rides like crazy...the geometry 

works so well, I could throw it into tight 

corners with so much confidence, I could just 

pedal straight threw them… the bike wants 

to be ridden fast, it actually feels better the 

faster you go.”

Developed with Olaf Wit and proven in the extreme 

Transalp race by Stefan ‘Fish’ Vis, the Hook is a true 

wolf in sheep’s clothing, the subtle understated looks 

masking the true abilities of this bike. The Columbus 

tubing and carbon fork keep things stiff but light, and 

the SRAM Rival group set ensure flawless shifting. The 

wheel set is the latest offering from Mavic, so the bike 

is well equipped to take on whatever adventure you have 

in store for it, gravel, CX or even a trip across the Alps.

The Arise is like a Swiss Army Knife, tough, dependable 

and versatile. At its heart is the heat-treated crmo frame, 

strong and light. The fork crown is invest casted with an 

internal sleeve design to keep the outside looking clean 

and smooth. Removable cable tabs and the horizontal

for a women’s version soon started rolling in. Based 

around a classic Mixte shape with slim tubing, and a 

slightly more sporty geometry, this Oxbridge is built

The Red Bull Ride‘n’Style is undoubtedly ‘the’ 

event on the fixed gear calendar. Now in its 

4th year the event attracts riders from all 

over the world and San Fransisco provides 

a fitting backdrop for this unique competition. 

This year saw over 50 riders competing, 

from all corners of the globe and with diverse 

backgrounds; messengers, track pro’s and 

freestyle riders went all in, for this unique 

mash up contest.

Bombtrack had both Elliott Milner and 

JBall on site to represent in the freestyle 

contest. With both riders putting in 

an incredible performance with technical 

riding that is truly pushing boundaries. In 

the end it was JBall who brought home a 

silver medal that was a fantastic achievement 

given the tough competition.

From the first moment the Divide broke surface no one 

could define what it was, is it a 700c fixed freestyle 

bike? a fixed gear commuter? or simply an urban mosh 

bike? We’d like to think it’s actually all of these things, 

but above everything else it’s a daily companion. The 

fun and playful geometry combined with bullet proof 

pars and build quality meant this bike was an instant 

hit. For 2015 we redesigned the rear hub to allow for 

an easy conversion into a cassette hub making this bike 

even more diverse in its appeal.

Well established in the fixed freestyle world as the goto 

for an out of the box street weapon the Dash is now 

something of a benchmark in the sport. The bike continues 

to evolv, with input from team rider Elliott Milner, the 

stand over height is lower, the bars are taller and the 

dropouts smaller. The Dash is also laying down some new 

rubber in the form of the Helix v2 street tires, and in a 

perfect 2.3” width they round off this incredible machine.
