Here we are, another year further<br />

down the trail. The Bombtrack<br />

show rolls onwards.<br />

So who’s been where since the<br />

last time we caught up? Fish,<br />

Joachim and Marc teamed up to<br />

attempt the inaugural Silk Road<br />

Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan,<br />

while Matty and Clare’s more<br />

sedate wanderings saw them reach<br />

the Himalayas. With their new<br />

van complete Franzi and Jona<br />

barely spent two nights in the<br />

same place, hitting France, Italy,<br />

Morocco, and Spain.<br />

We’ve made new friends on the<br />

road too. Including new team<br />

member Gaëlle Bojko, who’s<br />

undertaking a solo lap around<br />

the edge of Europe as part of her<br />

dissertation research.<br />

Besides adventuring, we’ve<br />

had competitive success too,<br />

with cyclocross rider Gosse<br />

van der Meer scoring podiums<br />

in Australia and Switzerland,<br />

alongside a first UCI win in<br />

China. Also racing this year was<br />

Clem, again battling Yorkshire’s<br />

fearsome Three Peaks race.<br />

In between it all we’ve continued<br />

bringing adventure to the masses,<br />

supporting events across Europe<br />

including The Dirty Reiver,<br />

Tuscany Trail, and Dirty Boar.<br />

As we’ve explored fresh places<br />

and met new people, so ideas for<br />

bikes have sprung into being.<br />

This year we’re launching three.<br />

First, our Tension cyclocross<br />

line gains a dedicated women’s<br />

model. Next, the Beyond touring<br />

range shrinks to meet the needs<br />

of younger riders, with a 24-inch<br />

wheel version. Finally, the allnew<br />

Cale mountain bike combines<br />

the ability to haul with the<br />

capacity to shred, taking riders<br />

into as yet uncharted territory.<br />

So we’ve got the kit sorted, but<br />

what comes next? Despite having<br />

plenty of routes sketched, plans<br />

half made, and a few dates in the<br />

diary, who knows where we’ll be<br />

How do you plan your days?<br />

I plan as I travel. I have offline<br />

maps on my phone to choose<br />

roughly the roads I’ll take. That’s<br />

pretty much it. From Transylvania<br />

onwards, it’s been pretty straight<br />

forward as there aren’t that many<br />

to choose between. I’d just follow<br />

one all day long. In Spain, France<br />

or the UK, you can’t take the big<br />

roads, so you have to manage with<br />

the smaller ones.<br />

Were you apprehensive about<br />

sleeping out?<br />

I’ve done some wild camping, so<br />

it wasn’t my biggest concern. But<br />

in Albania, Greece, and Turkey<br />

it was pretty cold. The worst<br />

was Greece, where it was around<br />

-18°c. My sleeping bag goes down<br />

to -8°c, and the tent adds a few<br />

degrees. I slept in my down jacket<br />

and drank lots of tea. I thought<br />

it would be ok. Then I met some<br />

hunters and they told me there<br />

were wolves around. I saw their<br />

tracks in the snow, and that was<br />

enough. I didn’t really sleep<br />

much.<br />

place?<br />

Croatia felt wild. There were<br />

stretches where I would cycle for<br />

70km without seeing a town or<br />

village, nothing. I always have<br />

enough food in my bag for a<br />

few days, but getting water was<br />

sometimes a bit difficult and I<br />

had to start rationing it.<br />

Which cities have been your<br />

favourite?<br />

I like Tirana in Albania and<br />

Tbilisi in Georgia. Both have a<br />

very rich history. You can see it<br />

when you wander around. I meet<br />

fewer people in the cities though.<br />

People won’t just stop to talk. In<br />

the countryside, people will wave<br />

at you as you ride by and just<br />

start talking.<br />

What does the perfect city for<br />

cycling look like?<br />

The infrastructure has to be well<br />

thought out. People have to cycle<br />

themselves to understand how it<br />

works. Then it has something to<br />

do with those people too, both<br />

cyclists and pedestrians, car<br />

drivers and truck drivers. There<br />

has to be an attitude of respect.<br />

It’s about a state of mind.<br />

Do you enjoy the cities or the<br />

countryside more?<br />

I don’t go into the cities often,<br />

so I enjoy my time when I’m<br />

there. It’s nice to have everything<br />

around you and not have to worry<br />

about finding a supermarket<br />

or getting water. It feels more<br />

like being back at home. You<br />

get sucked back into city life<br />

quite easily. But I can get fed<br />

up quickly. I normally spend<br />

one or two days in the city,<br />

then I’m ready to go back to the<br />

countryside.<br />

On average, how much money<br />

a day are you spending, and on<br />

what?<br />

I spend most of my money on<br />

food. It depends on what country<br />

I’m in. In Norway, it will be<br />

crazy expensive. So far, Turkey<br />

was really cheap. I was spending<br />

maybe a couple of euros a day.<br />

From time to time I’ll spend some<br />

on camping or staying in a hostel.<br />

Mostly just to get a shower. You<br />

come to really appreciate them.<br />

Where has had the worst<br />

conditions and where’s been the<br />

best?<br />

Greece was the worst because<br />

I wasn’t expecting such low<br />

temperatures. I knew Turkey was<br />

going to be cold, so it wasn’t that<br />

bad. The best? I’m not sure. The<br />

past couple of weeks taking the<br />

ferry from Georgia to Ukraine,<br />

and then riding through Ukraine<br />

to Romania have been good.<br />

Who’s the most interesting<br />

person you’ve met?<br />

I’ve met a lot of interesting<br />

people. I don’t think I could<br />

choose one. There have been lots<br />

that have taught me something<br />

about their country or its culture.<br />

One time I fell down and I got<br />

picked up by a trucker, so I got<br />

to see what life is like for them.<br />

Language can be difficult. I often<br />

find myself just reading the signs<br />

or the expressions on peoples<br />

faces.<br />

What’s the most important item<br />

in your panniers?<br />

Turkish coffee is really nice. Now<br />

I carry a small Turkish coffee<br />

pot on my panniers. But the most<br />

important item is my folding<br />

knife. It’s always very useful.<br />

Our Hook line heads further<br />

into unmapped terrain. What<br />

started as a radical design has<br />

now become accepted as almost<br />

mainstream. Both the Hook<br />

most of the original machine’s<br />

gravel-taming DNA. This sees<br />

How did the Dirty Boar come<br />

about?<br />

The idea of the Dirty Boar came<br />

to life after riding the Dirty<br />

Reiver (UK) back in 2016. On the<br />

way back home from the event,<br />

while having a beer on the ferry,<br />

we decided we needed an event<br />

like this in Belgium. We almost<br />

instantly knew that the Hautes<br />

Fagnes was the ideal region for<br />

it.<br />

We call it the Dirty Boar because<br />

you (might) get dirty during the<br />

ride, and because the wild boar is<br />

a typical animal of the region.<br />

Can you explain its appeal?<br />

We hope it’s appeal are the<br />

elements you experience during<br />

the route. It’s a challenging ride<br />

in a beautiful area where you<br />

hardly encounter villages.<br />

As well, you get to share the<br />

experiences of the day with other<br />

riders over a post ride beer and<br />

some Belgian fries.<br />

What’s the perfect bike for the<br />

Dirty Boar?<br />

The perfect bike is a gravel bike<br />

but mountain bikes, cyclocross<br />

bikes and even trekking bikes<br />

are also welcome. It’s about the<br />

ride, the people and not about the<br />

bike!<br />

What have been the fastest and<br />

slowest times to complete the<br />

165 kilometre route, and is it the<br />

exact same route every year?<br />

The route is roughly the same<br />

every year, and covers 165-170km<br />

of distance with around 2600m<br />

of elevation. We start close to<br />

the highest point of Belgium,<br />

then head over to Germany for<br />

about 50km before finishing<br />

back in Belgium with some more<br />

climbing. The previous times for<br />

completing the ride lie between<br />

7 to 12 hours. We try to change<br />

the route a little bit for every<br />

edition. This makes it fun for the<br />

people that return every year but<br />

also fun for us as it forces us to<br />

keep on exploring the roads in<br />

the region.<br />

How do you keep on attracting<br />

starters? Whats the main point<br />

for someone to attend the Boar<br />

a second time - do you have<br />

specific plans for the future and<br />

upcoming editions and how do<br />

the annual events differ from<br />

each other so far?<br />

We think what attracts the riders<br />

are the core ideas we wanted to<br />

put into the ride. A challenging<br />

route, a beautiful area and the<br />

chance to meet other gravel<br />

grinders. Maybe some also return<br />

for the beautiful Dirty Boar stem<br />

cap (the colour changes every<br />

year), a trophy that participants<br />

receive at the finish. We have<br />

a few additional plans for the<br />

future but you will have to wait<br />

and see what they are and if we’re<br />

able to realize them. The basic<br />

event of the 3 previous editions<br />

has been the same. We just try to<br />

improve on the details of every<br />

edition.<br />

What is the reason to keep the<br />

starter’s field limited to 500<br />

riders?<br />

That’s based on permits and for<br />

limiting our general workload,<br />

besides it keeps the event<br />

“cosy”. It is not our intention to<br />

commercialize the Boar, it should<br />

be fun for the riders but also for<br />

us as organisers at the same time.<br />

How long does it usually take<br />

until the event is sold out?<br />

The first 2 editions took about 4<br />

months, the 3rd edition took only<br />

36 hours. Honestly, we’re kind of<br />

excited for what will happen for<br />

the 4th edition!<br />

What goes into making a<br />

successful event?<br />

We try to make an event in a way<br />

that we would like to participate<br />

in ourselves. Besides the work<br />

during the year, it takes about<br />

40 volunteers on the weekend to<br />

help provide all the riders with<br />

a great day on the bike. Without<br />

them events like this would not<br />

be successful nor possible.<br />

What’s your attitude towards<br />

making existing gravel events<br />

into races?<br />

Everybody should create and ride<br />

the existing event the way they<br />

want and which gives them the<br />

most amount of fun. The riders<br />

are free to choose which mode<br />

they ride, as it is time measured<br />

it always could be a ride against<br />

the clock - but there’s absolutely<br />

no need to if you prefer to enjoy<br />

the landscape, the views and the<br />

chat at the feeding stations.<br />

How do you balance making the<br />

ride an adventure versus making<br />

it accessible?<br />

This is fairly simple; we are not<br />

the strongest riders ourselves.<br />

So if it sounds accessible to<br />

us it should be OK for most<br />

of the riders. We also try to<br />

provide “services” at the events,<br />

from 3 feed stations to having<br />

mechanical service-points along<br />

side and bike cleaning stations<br />

at the finish and so on. The full<br />

route is marked with arrows, so<br />

you can even enjoy your ride<br />

without staring the whole time at<br />

your GPS device. Then at our 2nd<br />

event, the Dirty Boar bikepacker<br />

event taking placer in Summer,<br />

we provide dinner, breakfast and<br />

the possibility to rent a tent.<br />

This means the curious can try<br />

out bikepacking without the need<br />

to buy all the special and/or<br />

lightweight equipment.<br />

What are some of your favourite<br />

events from around the world?<br />

There are a few, but among<br />

them would definitely be the<br />

Torino-Nice Rally (I / F), the<br />

Dirty Reiver (UK), definitely<br />

the Tuscany Trail (I), The Rift<br />

Iceland (IS) and some of the<br />

famous gravel rides in the USA.<br />

We haven’t ridden all of them<br />

yet but those are on our bucket<br />

list and we hope to do so in the<br />

coming years!<br />

ABOUT HIS VISION FOR<br />

THE FUTURE.<br />

How did Microshift come to<br />

be founded and what did the<br />

company want to achieve?<br />

Gus Juffer: Microshift was<br />

founded in 1999 with the goal<br />

of creating a drivetrain company<br />

that could work with other brands<br />

in the burgeoning Taiwanese<br />

bike industry and compete with<br />

Shimano. Our first product was<br />

a twist shifter design with a<br />

more tactile shifting action than<br />

the Sram product at the time.<br />

Eventually, the team developed<br />

derailleurs and cassettes as well.<br />

Who works at Microshift and<br />

where are they based?<br />

Our nerve centre is in Taichung,<br />

Taiwan. The company’s core is<br />

the engineering team, some of<br />

who have been with the company<br />

since it was founded. We keep<br />

the engineering and production<br />

teams close to each other. When<br />

we take a new product to market,<br />

there are always changes to be<br />

made between prototype and<br />

production, and we can do that<br />

very quickly. Our branding team<br />

is located in the United States.<br />

Their main responsibility is<br />

to make Microshift relevant<br />

to riders, and they do lots of<br />

research to help set the direction<br />

for new product development.<br />

How has Microshift been able to<br />

adapt to trends in the way people<br />

are using their bike?<br />

Bicycle design has become more<br />

diverse in the last decade. Look<br />

at the “all road” segment. There<br />

are bikes for gravel racing,<br />

endurance gravel, randoneering,<br />

touring, bikepacking, adventure<br />

racing... Overall, competition<br />

has become less important to<br />

how people ride and how bikes<br />

are designed. Makers now focus<br />

on building better bikes for the<br />

ways people actually want to<br />

ride. That’s perfect for us. Bigger<br />

players like Shimano and Sram<br />

have to focus on broad market<br />

segments, whereas we can focus<br />

on niches like bikepacking and<br />

make products perfectly suited to<br />

it.<br />

How did your collaboration with<br />

Bombtrack come about?<br />

Bombtrack makes beautiful<br />

bikes, but they’re not held<br />

back by tradition – they’re<br />

actively exploring new designs<br />

to give people a more fun riding<br />

experience. Partnering with us is<br />

a little bit of a risk – it’s easier<br />

to just put Shimano on a bike<br />

because no one will question that<br />

decision. But since our product is<br />

well designed and manufactured,<br />

since it works reliably, since the<br />

warranty is good, and since we<br />

make products in niches no one<br />

else does, Bombtrack has decided<br />

we’re a good fit.<br />

You make a lot of niche<br />

components, like bar end<br />

shifters. What’s the logic behind<br />

this?<br />

For years microshift produced<br />

products that were functionally<br />

similar to Shimano, but cheaper.<br />

Without a trusted name, there<br />

wasn’t much reason to buy our


product. Recently we’ve changed<br />

direction by focusing on unique<br />

products, offering different<br />

features to what’s currently<br />

available. Our bar end shifters<br />

are a staple of the adventure<br />

cycling scene. They’re simple,<br />

durable, affordable, and allow<br />

you to set up your bike how you<br />

want, no matter which handlebars<br />

you’re using. If you’re not<br />

racing, integrated road shifters<br />

just aren’t necessary, and the<br />

advantages of a wide range,<br />

single-chainring setup are much<br />

more important.<br />

Sram, Shimano and Campagnolo<br />

seem to have the market sewn up.<br />

How do you compete against the<br />

big three?<br />

There’s plenty of room as long as<br />

we keep making unique products.<br />

Our Advent group is an example<br />

of this. No one else is making<br />

a budget-friendly 9-speed wide<br />

range group, but judging by our<br />

sales, lots of people out there<br />

that want it. We also need brands<br />

like Bombtrack to get our product<br />

out there. Once riders try them,<br />

we know they’ll be stoked!<br />

Building trust doesn’t happen<br />

overnight, but we’re confident<br />

enough in the product to offer a<br />

four-year warranty. The only way<br />

we can compete is to make cool<br />

stuff that works and stand behind<br />

it.<br />

Explain a little about what you<br />

wanted to achieve with the new<br />

Advent groupset?<br />

We wanted a group that could<br />

tolerate a ton of abuse and still<br />

finish the ride. Right now Sram<br />

is dominating the mountain<br />

bike market with its 12-speed<br />

drivetrain. The system has a<br />

lot of advantages, but there<br />

are some key disadvantages we<br />

wanted to address. The biggest<br />

is tolerance: a 12-speed chain<br />

is so narrow everything needs<br />

to be aligned perfectly for the<br />

system to work. That means it’s<br />

finicky to set up. If you introduce<br />

dirt, cable stretch, or a bent<br />

derailleur hanger, it’ll need<br />

immediate maintenance to work<br />

properly again. Advent is based<br />

on a 9-speed chain. It’s super<br />

easy to set up and barely requires<br />

any maintenance. It’s old school<br />

durability for new school bikes.<br />

How does Microshift go about<br />

A steel Audax bike that refuses to be bound by convention. A robust and adaptable Columbus Cromor frame is the starting<br />

point. With through-axles and a threaded T47 bottom bracket, it should survive a lifetime of intense use, as will its<br />

lightweight full carbon fork. With all the fixing you need to secure your gear, its 650B wheels might once have seemed radical,<br />

but are now widely accepted. Their voluminous size keeps rolling resistance low, yet allows the Audax to swoop across a range<br />
