Here we are, another year further 

down the trail. The Bombtrack 

show rolls onwards. 

So who’s been where since the 

last time we caught up? Fish, 

Joachim and Marc teamed up to 

attempt the inaugural Silk Road 

Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan, 

while Matty and Clare’s more 

sedate wanderings saw them reach 

the Himalayas. With their new 

van complete Franzi and Jona 

barely spent two nights in the 

same place, hitting France, Italy, 

Morocco, and Spain. 

We’ve made new friends on the 

road too. Including new team 

member Gaëlle Bojko, who’s 

undertaking a solo lap around 

the edge of Europe as part of her 

dissertation research. 

Besides adventuring, we’ve 

had competitive success too, 

with cyclocross rider Gosse 

van der Meer scoring podiums 

in Australia and Switzerland, 

alongside a first UCI win in 

China. Also racing this year was 

Clem, again battling Yorkshire’s 

fearsome Three Peaks race. 

In between it all we’ve continued 

bringing adventure to the masses, 

supporting events across Europe 

including The Dirty Reiver, 

Tuscany Trail, and Dirty Boar. 

As we’ve explored fresh places 

and met new people, so ideas for 

bikes have sprung into being. 

This year we’re launching three. 

First, our Tension cyclocross 

line gains a dedicated women’s 

model. Next, the Beyond touring 

range shrinks to meet the needs 

of younger riders, with a 24-inch 

wheel version. Finally, the allnew 

Cale mountain bike combines 

the ability to haul with the 

capacity to shred, taking riders 

into as yet uncharted territory. 

So we’ve got the kit sorted, but 

what comes next? Despite having 

plenty of routes sketched, plans 

half made, and a few dates in the 

diary, who knows where we’ll be 

this time next year?

How do you plan your days? 

I plan as I travel. I have offline 

maps on my phone to choose 

roughly the roads I’ll take. That’s 

pretty much it. From Transylvania 

onwards, it’s been pretty straight 

forward as there aren’t that many 

to choose between. I’d just follow 

one all day long. In Spain, France 

or the UK, you can’t take the big 

roads, so you have to manage with 

the smaller ones. 

Were you apprehensive about 

sleeping out? 

I’ve done some wild camping, so 

it wasn’t my biggest concern. But 

in Albania, Greece, and Turkey 

it was pretty cold. The worst 

was Greece, where it was around 

-18°c. My sleeping bag goes down 

to -8°c, and the tent adds a few 

degrees. I slept in my down jacket 

and drank lots of tea. I thought 

it would be ok. Then I met some 

hunters and they told me there 

were wolves around. I saw their 

tracks in the snow, and that was 

enough. I didn’t really sleep 

much.

place?

Croatia felt wild. There were 

stretches where I would cycle for 

70km without seeing a town or 

village, nothing. I always have 

enough food in my bag for a 

few days, but getting water was 

sometimes a bit difficult and I 

had to start rationing it.

Which cities have been your 

favourite? 

I like Tirana in Albania and 

Tbilisi in Georgia. Both have a 

very rich history. You can see it 

when you wander around. I meet 

fewer people in the cities though. 

People won’t just stop to talk. In 

the countryside, people will wave 

at you as you ride by and just 

start talking. 

What does the perfect city for 

cycling look like? 

The infrastructure has to be well 

thought out. People have to cycle 

themselves to understand how it 

works. Then it has something to 

do with those people too, both 

cyclists and pedestrians, car 

drivers and truck drivers. There 

has to be an attitude of respect. 

It’s about a state of mind. 

Do you enjoy the cities or the 

countryside more? 

I don’t go into the cities often, 

so I enjoy my time when I’m 

there. It’s nice to have everything 

around you and not have to worry 

about finding a supermarket 

or getting water. It feels more 

like being back at home. You 

get sucked back into city life 

quite easily. But I can get fed 

up quickly. I normally spend 

one or two days in the city, 

then I’m ready to go back to the 

countryside. 

On average, how much money 

a day are you spending, and on 

what? 

I spend most of my money on 

food. It depends on what country 

I’m in. In Norway, it will be 

crazy expensive. So far, Turkey 

was really cheap. I was spending 

maybe a couple of euros a day. 

From time to time I’ll spend some 

on camping or staying in a hostel. 

Mostly just to get a shower. You 

come to really appreciate them. 

Where has had the worst 

conditions and where’s been the 

best? 

Greece was the worst because 

I wasn’t expecting such low 

temperatures. I knew Turkey was 

going to be cold, so it wasn’t that 

bad. The best? I’m not sure. The 

past couple of weeks taking the 

ferry from Georgia to Ukraine, 

and then riding through Ukraine 

to Romania have been good. 

Who’s the most interesting 

person you’ve met? 

I’ve met a lot of interesting 

people. I don’t think I could 

choose one. There have been lots 

that have taught me something 

about their country or its culture. 

One time I fell down and I got 

picked up by a trucker, so I got 

to see what life is like for them. 

Language can be difficult. I often 

find myself just reading the signs 

or the expressions on peoples 

faces. 

What’s the most important item 

in your panniers? 

Turkish coffee is really nice. Now 

I carry a small Turkish coffee 

pot on my panniers. But the most 

important item is my folding 

knife. It’s always very useful.

How did the Dirty Boar come 

about? 

The idea of the Dirty Boar came 

to life after riding the Dirty 

Reiver (UK) back in 2016. On the 

way back home from the event, 

while having a beer on the ferry, 

we decided we needed an event 

like this in Belgium. We almost 

instantly knew that the Hautes 

Fagnes was the ideal region for 

it. 

We call it the Dirty Boar because 

you (might) get dirty during the 

ride, and because the wild boar is 

a typical animal of the region. 

Can you explain its appeal? 

We hope it’s appeal are the 

elements you experience during 

the route. It’s a challenging ride 

in a beautiful area where you 

hardly encounter villages. 

As well, you get to share the 

experiences of the day with other 

riders over a post ride beer and 

some Belgian fries. 

What’s the perfect bike for the 

Dirty Boar? 

The perfect bike is a gravel bike 

but mountain bikes, cyclocross 

bikes and even trekking bikes 

are also welcome. It’s about the 

ride, the people and not about the 

bike! 

What have been the fastest and 

slowest times to complete the 

165 kilometre route, and is it the 

exact same route every year? 

The route is roughly the same 

every year, and covers 165-170km 

of distance with around 2600m 

of elevation. We start close to 

the highest point of Belgium, 

then head over to Germany for 

about 50km before finishing 

back in Belgium with some more 

climbing. The previous times for 

completing the ride lie between 

7 to 12 hours. We try to change 

the route a little bit for every 

edition. This makes it fun for the 

people that return every year but 

also fun for us as it forces us to 

keep on exploring the roads in 

the region. 

How do you keep on attracting 

starters? Whats the main point 

for someone to attend the Boar 

a second time - do you have 

specific plans for the future and 

upcoming editions and how do 

the annual events differ from 

each other so far? 

We think what attracts the riders 

are the core ideas we wanted to 

put into the ride. A challenging 

route, a beautiful area and the 

chance to meet other gravel 

grinders. Maybe some also return 

for the beautiful Dirty Boar stem 

cap (the colour changes every 

year), a trophy that participants 

receive at the finish. We have 

a few additional plans for the 

future but you will have to wait 

and see what they are and if we’re 

able to realize them. The basic 

event of the 3 previous editions 

has been the same. We just try to

improve on the details of every 

edition. 

What is the reason to keep the 

starter’s field limited to 500 

riders? 

That’s based on permits and for 

limiting our general workload, 

besides it keeps the event 

“cosy”. It is not our intention to 

commercialize the Boar, it should 

be fun for the riders but also for 

us as organisers at the same time. 

How long does it usually take 

until the event is sold out? 

The first 2 editions took about 4 

months, the 3rd edition took only

What goes into making a 

successful event? 

We try to make an event in a way 

that we would like to participate 

in ourselves. Besides the work 

during the year, it takes about 

40 volunteers on the weekend to 

help provide all the riders with 

a great day on the bike. Without 

them events like this would not 

be successful nor possible. 

What’s your attitude towards 

making existing gravel events 

into races? 

Everybody should create and ride 

the existing event the way they 

want and which gives them the 

most amount of fun. The riders 

are free to choose which mode 

they ride, as it is time measured 

it always could be a ride against 

the clock - but there’s absolutely 

no need to if you prefer to enjoy 

the landscape, the views and the 

chat at the feeding stations. 

How do you balance making the 

ride an adventure versus making 

it accessible? 

This is fairly simple; we are not 

the strongest riders ourselves. 

So if it sounds accessible to 

us it should be OK for most 

of the riders. We also try to 

provide “services” at the events, 

from 3 feed stations to having 

mechanical service-points along 

side and bike cleaning stations 

at the finish and so on. The full 

route is marked with arrows, so 

you can even enjoy your ride 

without staring the whole time at 

your GPS device. Then at our 2nd 

event, the Dirty Boar bikepacker 

event taking placer in Summer, 

we provide dinner, breakfast and 

the possibility to rent a tent. 

This means the curious can try 

out bikepacking without the need 

to buy all the special and/or 

lightweight equipment. 

What are some of your favourite 

events from around the world? 

There are a few, but among 

them would definitely be the 

Torino-Nice Rally (I / F), the 

Dirty Reiver (UK), definitely 

the Tuscany Trail (I), The Rift 

Iceland (IS) and some of the 

famous gravel rides in the USA. 

We haven’t ridden all of them 

yet but those are on our bucket 

list and we hope to do so in the 

coming years!

THE FUTURE. 

How did Microshift come to 

be founded and what did the 

company want to achieve? 

Gus Juffer: Microshift was 

founded in 1999 with the goal 

of creating a drivetrain company 

that could work with other brands 

in the burgeoning Taiwanese 

bike industry and compete with 

Shimano. Our first product was

a twist shifter design with a 

more tactile shifting action than 

the Sram product at the time. 

Eventually, the team developed 

derailleurs and cassettes as well. 

Who works at Microshift and 

where are they based? 

Our nerve centre is in Taichung, 

Taiwan. The company’s core is 

the engineering team, some of 

who have been with the company 

since it was founded. We keep 

the engineering and production 

teams close to each other. When 

we take a new product to market, 

there are always changes to be 

made between prototype and 

production, and we can do that 

very quickly. Our branding team 

is located in the United States. 

Their main responsibility is 

to make Microshift relevant 

to riders, and they do lots of 

research to help set the direction 

for new product development. 

How has Microshift been able to 

adapt to trends in the way people 

are using their bike? 

Bicycle design has become more 

diverse in the last decade. Look 

at the “all road” segment. There 

are bikes for gravel racing, 

endurance gravel, randoneering, 

touring, bikepacking, adventure 

racing... Overall, competition 

has become less important to 

how people ride and how bikes 

are designed. Makers now focus 

on building better bikes for the 

ways people actually want to 

ride. That’s perfect for us. Bigger 

players like Shimano and Sram 

have to focus on broad market 

segments, whereas we can focus 

on niches like bikepacking and 

make products perfectly suited to 

it. 

How did your collaboration with 

Bombtrack come about? 

Bombtrack makes beautiful 

bikes, but they’re not held 

back by tradition – they’re 

actively exploring new designs 

to give people a more fun riding 

experience. Partnering with us is 

a little bit of a risk – it’s easier 

to just put Shimano on a bike 

because no one will question that 

decision. But since our product is 

well designed and manufactured, 

since it works reliably, since the 

warranty is good, and since we 

make products in niches no one 

else does, Bombtrack has decided 

we’re a good fit. 

You make a lot of niche 

components, like bar end 

shifters. What’s the logic behind 

this? 

For years microshift produced 

products that were functionally 

similar to Shimano, but cheaper. 

Without a trusted name, there 

wasn’t much reason to buy our

product. Recently we’ve changed 

direction by focusing on unique 

products, offering different 

features to what’s currently 

available. Our bar end shifters 

are a staple of the adventure 

cycling scene. They’re simple, 

durable, affordable, and allow 

you to set up your bike how you 

want, no matter which handlebars 

you’re using. If you’re not 

racing, integrated road shifters 

just aren’t necessary, and the 

advantages of a wide range, 

single-chainring setup are much 

more important. 

Sram, Shimano and Campagnolo 

seem to have the market sewn up. 

How do you compete against the 

big three? 

There’s plenty of room as long as 

we keep making unique products. 

Our Advent group is an example 

of this. No one else is making 

a budget-friendly 9-speed wide 

range group, but judging by our 

sales, lots of people out there 

that want it. We also need brands 

like Bombtrack to get our product 

out there. Once riders try them, 

we know they’ll be stoked! 

Building trust doesn’t happen 

overnight, but we’re confident 

enough in the product to offer a 

four-year warranty. The only way 

we can compete is to make cool 

stuff that works and stand behind 

it. 

Explain a little about what you 

wanted to achieve with the new 

Advent groupset? 

We wanted a group that could 

tolerate a ton of abuse and still 

finish the ride. Right now Sram 

is dominating the mountain 

bike market with its 12-speed 

drivetrain. The system has a 

lot of advantages, but there 

are some key disadvantages we 

wanted to address. The biggest 

is tolerance: a 12-speed chain 

is so narrow everything needs 

to be aligned perfectly for the 

system to work. That means it’s 

finicky to set up. If you introduce 

dirt, cable stretch, or a bent 

derailleur hanger, it’ll need 

immediate maintenance to work 

properly again. Advent is based 

on a 9-speed chain. It’s super 

easy to set up and barely requires 

any maintenance. It’s old school 

durability for new school bikes. 

How does Microshift go about 

designing its product ranges? 

Sram, Shimano, and Campagnolo 

fight each other for the highend 

market and then trickle 

technology down to their middleend 

groups. Sometimes high-end 

features don’t trickle down at 

all. We want to take high-end 

technology and bring it directly 

to a budget-friendly market. It 

used to be that the nameplate 

on the rear derailleur told you 

how nice a bike was. Those days 

are long gone. Suspension, tyre 

choice, frame design, all are just 

as important as moving from one 

gear to another. Our goal is to 

make drivetrains that give you all 

the features you need and allow 

you to spend 

your money 

on better 

suspension, 

tires, cockpit, 

or just better 

beer. 

What are 

your hopes 

for the future 

and where do 

you see the 

adventure 

cycling market 

going? 

Adventure 

cycling is a 

return to cycling’s roots. Riding a 

bike is so fun, and it’s relatively 

easy for human beings to go long 

distances efficiently – it gives 

you such a feeling of freedom to 

pedal around, see the country, 

and go wherever you want without 

worrying about having the right 

bike. When bikes were first 

introduced, this kind of riding 

was obvious – ride somewhere 

pretty and have a picnic or camp 

out. In the future, I think we’ll 

look on the road racing craze and 

ask, “what were we thinking?”
