Bombtrack Groundwork 2017

In September this year the second edition of our anual „Groundwork“ 

event took place. This time we swapped rural France for 

something a little more closer to home, actually so close to home it 

was only a stone’s throw from our base in Cologne. The half-timbered 

and former manor house named „Landgut Breibach“ was our 

base for heading out into the surrounding landscape we know so 

well. 

When originally conceiving our “Groundwork” event for the first 

time, our intention was to keep the riding as the focal point, and 

spread over a few days so we can catch up, talking bikes with 

like-minded friends consisting of teamriders, freelancing contributors, 

distributors, long time supporting shops and befriended media. 

When we draw upon the experience of our team riders in the development 

of new and existing models, the exchanges can often be intense 

and focused on the task in hand, we thought why not establish 

an annual gathering, as kind of “thank you” for those that helped 

and are still helping to build the brand to what it is today. From 

this the idea developed into extending the 

invitations wider to those connected with

the brand, giving everybody the chance to 

try out the latest models. 

In the meanwhile Groundwork has become 

a melting pot for creative brainstorming 

from all perpectives, and an important 

component for our model development 

process - but at the same time it’s the first 

point in the year our latest range of bikes 

are presented for a hands-on experience.

Jason Sellers (born in April, 1980) 

grew up in Wiesbaden Germany, 

lived for a few years in Los Angeles 

CA., studied Graphic Design 

before doing magazine layout 

for several years. Photography 

eventually entered his life and 

quickly dominated his path for 

documentary and lifestyle driven 

photography. Since Bombtrack’s 

inception Jason’s work 

has been a very important component 

of how we have been displayed 

in media. His eye for detail 

and composition always places 

our bikes and their stories into 

the ideal, probably perfect light.

Franzi Wernsing was born in Muenster, 

Germany in 1986 and has been 

exploring the world ever since. 

When she came back from studying 

art in Melbourne, Australia - 

Franzi added an apprenticeship of 

photography in Hamburg, Germany 

before delving into the world 

of advertising photography. Franzi 

became fed up with the daily 

grind, and actually did something 

about it - she sold all her belongings, 

took her boyfriend Jona and

began to document and explore the 

GROUNDWORK world by bike. 2017 This gave rise to the 

- project 6 known as “Tales On Tyres”.

Frank Maier, born in April 1987, 

has been a passionate cyclist and 

bike lover since his childhood. 

His love for cycling was one of his 

main drivers to take up photography 

– a desire to document life 

on bike that eventually caused 

him to create a blog covering all 

spheres of cycling. Over the past 

few years shutuplegs.de has become 

one of the staples for original 

cycling photography content, 

not only for its immaculate layout, 

but also because Frank strictly 

avoids reposting anything.
