Wearable arts success for Lincoln High
LINCOLN HIGH School
students have proven their
skills at the North Canterbury
Wearable Arts show.
Nine students took part in the
competition in Rangiora and
they received four awards.
In the environment section,
Alexandra Causer came second
in the year 9-10 division with
her 60s-inspired garment
made from old computer punch
cards.
Sarah McDougall, Aria Lyver
and Caitlin Watson came third
in the same division with their
LGBTQ+ inspired rainbow coloured
dress made from Resene
paint pallets.
In the open section, Sarah
Giles came second with her
playing cards dress and Cassandra
Ngo came third with her
Vietnamese-inspired dress made
from toi toi and plants
Textile teacher Emma Paterson
said other great garments
were also on show, Rosa Dunbar
had a cloud-inspired garment
made from stuffing and Ardra
Heffer made a dress from chip
packets.
“The girls looked amazing
and even though they were a
bit nervous they didn’t show it
once they were on stage. The
parents were all there to support
the girls, which was a proud
moment for all the families
involved,” she said.
“I want to congratulate the
girls for their hard work over
the past three terms getting
their garments finished, they all
looked fabulous and the hard
work paid off.”
Ms Paterson said she looks
forward to seeing the garments
entered in the Art Couture Show
at the Lincoln Event Centre in
the school holidays next month.
Work on uni rec centre
to start next month
THE LINCOLN University
Recreation Centre is set to
undergo a transformation.
Next month a major $10 million
upgrade on the building will begin
and will add around 1800m²
floor space as well as new exercise,
teaching and research space.
The main gym will more than
double in size and there will be
a separate RPM room, external
exercise space, multiuse studio
and revamped changing facilities.
The upgrade begins next
month with the refurbishment of
the external changing rooms and
then the main work will begin in
early 2020, with a scheduled finish
in February 2021.
Lincoln University executive
director campus life Stuart Reilly
said the facility was last upgraded
in 1995 and the improved facilities
and new equipment would
give students and community
members more options.
“The focus for the refurbishment
is on student sport and
fitness needs and would include
a new sport and exercise lab for
research, contributing to the
expertise the centre could offer to
the public through being part of
a university,” Mr Reilly said.
He said the work would be
staged to ensure as little disruption
as possible to the centre
users and there will be regular
updates on progress.
“The upgrade is part of a wider
campus development plan which
aims to develop a more modern,
vibrant and safe campus, providing
a positive campus experience
for students and staff, and growing
Lincoln University’s future as
a world-class research and teaching
precinct.”
Environmental sustainability
is at the core of the campus
improvements, which includes
energy diversification measures
such as the use of renewable
energy sources like solar energy.
