Encouraging more<br />
women to join<br />
Only four percent of career firefighters<br />
and 16 per cent of volunteer<br />
firefighters are women but this is<br />
slowly changing, chairperson of<br />
Region Te Ihu Women’s Advisory<br />
Network and Timaru senior fire fighter<br />
Donna Lindsay said.<br />
She said the move from using the<br />
term firemen to firefighters has been a<br />
positive step in recognising the work<br />
women have been doing for years,<br />
and FENZ is beginning to promote the<br />
job to get more women involved.<br />
“A lot of them see the fitness side,<br />
especially the upper body strength, as<br />
a bit of a barrier.”<br />
“<strong>The</strong>re has been, in Auckland and<br />
hopefully Christchurch, little boot<br />
camps in eight week blocks to help<br />
people get up to speed with their<br />
fitness and strength but that’s only a<br />
part of the job.”<br />
Lindsay said the work of the fire<br />
service is more community-based<br />
such as education at A&P shows and<br />
in schools, and supporting at call outs<br />
such as road traffic incidents.<br />
Some brigades also take on childcare<br />
volunteers to look after the firefighters<br />
children when they are called to a job.<br />
Most women would find something<br />
within Fire and Emergency that would<br />
make them want to join whether<br />
it’s team building, community work,<br />
talking – it’s not always fighting fires.”<br />
It’s a very rewarding job and we need<br />
the students and young people out<br />
there to realise it is a possibility when<br />
they start looking at careers.”<br />
