Late yesterday police had not located the 21-year-old Black Power member who is wanted in relation to the death of Dean Amies in New Brighton last Wednesday. Strickland was allegedly driving a stolen white van and fleeing police when he struck Mr Amies at the intersection of Shaw Ave and Hawke St. A funeral service for Mr Amies, 46, was held at St Faith’s Church Ha l in New Brighton yesterday afternoon. Thursday October 3 2019 The Star Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz White supremacist posters appear at university • By Louis Day THE SAME white supremacist posters that appeared on the University of Auckland campus have been found on Canterbury University’s campus. A Canterbury University student made a post on the USCA Noticeboard Facebook group saying they had found the posters on campus and warned students to keep a look out for them and rip them off if they come across any. The posters encourage people to visit the webpage of a white supremacist group who wish “to build a new generation of capable, young white men who will assume the mantle of re-taking control of our own country.” It has been reported that women, non-Europeans and non-heterosexual individuals are excluded from becoming members. A Canterbury University spokeswoman said they had not come across any of the posters but would remove any discovered on campus. Vice-chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey said the university will not tolerate racism or harassment of any kind. This comes after University of Auckland vice-chancellor Stuart McCutcheon said the posters were “unfortunate” but the university would not be removing them. This has led to more than 400 university staff signing an open letter declaring racism and white supremacy has no place on the campus. Dumped rubbish could jeopardise mill project • By Louis Day THE DUMPING of rubbish outside the historic Wood Brothers Mill could jeopardise its $9 million restoration. Developer Michael King has been working for more than two years on grand plans to transform the 19th-century, four-storey former mill building in Michael King Addington into a mecca of offices, restaurants, a theatre and apartments. However, he said the constant dumping of rubbish outside the building could jeopardise the entire project. “It drives me insane, I have got the boys out there cleaning it up and I’m paying their salaries to clean it up. The other thing is the state of the building, it is completely covered in graffiti. “I can’t afford to pay people 40 to 50 bucks an hour every week to get rid of graffiti and rubbish,” he said. Mr King said he has installed cameras due to the persistent EYESORE: Rubbish dumped outside the Wood Brothers Mill on Bernard St. dumping and vandalism. “It is cheaper for me to buy cameras and monitor this, I can yell at people through the camera which freaks them out when the building starts talking to them.” Stage one of the restoration was completed in July, which was largely structural work, repairing and strengthening the mill before turning the building into offices. Stage two is converting the grain store building into restaurants, apartments and the community theatre, as well as refit with new roof and floors. A glass tower joins the two buildings with stairs, a lift and toilets. Mr King hoped to have the project completed within a year. “I can’t afford to not have it finished by then.” The restoration was previously delayed due to a pay dispute between Mr King and D & M Solutions. This led to delays to work on the elevator, under-floor electricals and heating, ventilation and air conditioning, holding the project up. However, the dispute has now been resolved and the work completed. Before that, the works were delayed due to the creation of unit titles taking longer than anticipated to complete. Mr King originally hoped to have eight restaurants and the theatre open by Show Weekend and the apartments finished early this year. NEWS 3 in brief Mother of fraudster also pleads guilty A mother who helped her fraudster son con people and a finance company out of hundreds of thousands of dollars has pleaded guilty. Karinya Isherwood will be sentenced on December 6 on multiple receiving charges for her role in the $250,000 scam. Her son, Brendon Karl Dean Harris, also pleaded guilty to 12 fraud charges. He obtained the money by collecting the identification details of people online, typically using fake social media accounts and advertising items for sale. He then used those details to apply for loans from Gem Finance. The money obtained was transferred into his friends and family members’ bank accounts, including his mother’s. Arrests made after police pursuit Two people have been arrested and charged after a police pursuit ended with a vehicle being stopped with spikes. The pursuit on Saturday about 11.25pm started and ended on Marshland Rd. Police attempted to pull the vehicle over but it fled. It was spiked and two people were arrested and charged with unlawfully getting into a vehicle and failing to stop. Bid to move accused gunman’s trial An application to move the trial for the March 15 terror attacks out of Christchurch is due to be heard in court today. At a call-over hearing in the High Court, the accused gunman’s lawyers, Shane Tait and Jonathon Hudson, will argue the trial should be transferred out of the city to a different venue. The accused gunman pleaded not guilty to the murder of 51 people and the attempted murder of 40 others, along with one charge under the Terrorism Suppression Act. Justice Cameron Mander will make the final decision on whether the trial, which has been scheduled to start on June 2, 2020, will be moved. The defendant will appear via audiovisual link.
