Rocks, fossils to fore
Petrified wood, fossils
and polished stones were
unearthed during the
‘‘journey to the centre of
the earth’’ holiday programme
at the Ashburton
Public Library this
week.
The ‘create our own
voyages’ session saw local
rock enthusiast Paul
Breakwell, amember of
the Canterbury Mineral
and Lapidary Club, talk
about his experience collecting
rocks and fossils
in the district and further
afield. He spoke of his
collection and areas
around Mid Canterbury
which were great sources
of fossils, such as Mt
Somers, and encouraged
the children attending to
get into rock and fossil
hunting.
Ten year old Donovan
Monk was one of around
25 children at the session
who already enjoys the
hobby.
He has acollection of
rocks and shells found
mostly around Wakanui
and Ashton beaches.
He was also able to use
some for his fish tank.
Mr Breakwell said
there may have been no
jurassic animals able to
roam Mid Canterbury, as
mountains such as Mt
Somers were all under
water, but there were
many waterbased
creatures which is why
fossils of shells, whale
bones or those of the
giant penguin found last
year in North Canterbury
were found in the middle
of landlocked areas.
He had examples of
rocks, fossils, agate and
petrified wood for the children
to see, and feel, up
close.
And gave them afossilised
shark’s tooth and a
polished stone to take
home.
The children then made
their own dinosaur fossil
using a imprinted clay
mould and plaster of Paris.
Strict communication rule
during council meetings
There were strict protocols
to prohibit councillors
‘‘corresponding out
of this room’’, chief
executive officer Hamish
Riach said.
He was reacting to a
suggestion from Ashburton
councillor Lynette
Lovett, as council
reviewed its video policy,
that council create a
bigger delay in its live
feed of council meetings
to do away with any
perception councillors
might be sending or
receiving emails on their
tablets.
Cr Lovett said with
meetings being broadcast
‘‘some may think we
are being contacted’’ if a
councillor looked at a
tablet, on which their
agendas are shown.
Mr Riach said that
would only be aperception
as there were strict
rules on that.
Communications
manager Ruben Garcia
said the delay now was
between 30 seconds and
two minutes and anything
else required a
better system.
Cr Selwyn Price asked
if it was possible for
2210141
votes to be recorded.
It was difficult for
viewers to hear how
councillors had voted if
they did not have their
microphones on, and
only four could be on at
any one time.
Meanwhile, the council
may consider some
