Despite cool weather, thousands ofkeen anglers around the country have been enjoying success as theytry to catch a trout for the family dinner table. The 201920 season began on October 1, with lakes, streams and rivers reopening after being closed over winter to allow trout to complete their breeding season undisturbed. The new fishing season coincides with the school holidays and Fish &Game has been encouraging parents to take their children fishing as great holiday activity. Reports fromFish and Game’s 12regions indicate good success for many anglers. Down south, Fish & Game staff say with the big Canterbury rivers in flood, the clear lowland streams and lakes became the angling hotspot. "Often overlooked in favour ofthe big rivers, the smaller rivers streams that are not subject to alpine rainfall are great choices for anglers to visit when heavy rain fills up rivers like the Rakaia and Waimakariri" says North Canterbury acting manager Richard Cosgrove. In the Central South Island region, despite early morning snowfalls, anglers were out in their dozens onLake Opuha. Some anglers on Lake Opuha had caught their bag limit of four trout before lunchtime. "On West Coast majority of anglers who found some water that wasn’t too discoloured from recent rain were able to connect with afish or two" says West Coast Fish and Game officer Baylee Kersten. "It’s fantastic how the opening of the fishing season has aligned with school holidays this year, all we need now is some nice weather to take the kids out." Kersten says. Rivers inthe west and north of the Southland region were in great fishing order especially for spin and bait fishing. Fish and Game staff were ranging on the middle reaches of the Aparima River as well as the Oreti and Mavora Lakes. Transport agency seeks feedback The NZ Transport Agency is identifying state highways where lower speed limits could make abig difference in preventing deaths and serious injuries, and where communities are calling for change. South Canterbury/ North Otago has two communities where residents have been wanting aspeed review for some time and both welcome the announcement of the required formal speed review consultation opening. Residents of Glenavy and Waitaki, on both sides of the Waitaki River, want to see the speeds in their area reduced. In Winchester, north of Timaru, residents want to see the 50km/h zone extended to incorporate the many residences and businesses on the north side of the town. “We are proposing to reduce the existing 70km/ hspeed limit in Glenavy to 60km/h and then reduce the speed from 100km/h to 80km/h over the Waitaki Bridge and through the settlement on the south side of the bridge,” says Jim Harland, director of regional relationships for the Transport Agency. There have been 26 crashes onthis stretch of highway in the last ten years (2009 2018) resulting in one person being killed, three seriously injured, and another 16 people receiving minor injuries. “In Winchester, the busy intersection where North Street meets State Highway 1ina100km/h zone causes a lot of concern,” says Mr Harland. “The residents there were so keen to see the speed reduced they recently presented us with apetition signed by close to 300 people supporting the speed reduction.” Jo Parke, aresident of Winchester, has been keen to see the speed reduced for years. To show that it wasn’t just her and a few of her neighbours pushing for this speed review, she started the petition. An overwhelming majority of Winchester residents and business people signed the petition in support of the speed review. “We have huge concerns regarding residents’ safety and especially for the children in our community because of the high speedspeople are travelling through Winchester,” she says. Residents were concerned about multiple nearmisses related to the current signage and its visibility relative to the nearby bend.
