Folic acid forhealthybabydevelopment
Folic acid is an essential Bvitamin important for the healthy
developmentofbabies early in pregnancy.
Thereisoverwhelming evidencethatconsuming sufficient folic
acid beforeconceptionand during early pregnancycan prevent
manycasesofneural tube defects such as spina bifida.
Folic acid, the synthetic form of the essential B vitamin folate, is
essential for reducing the risk of NTDs if consumed in sufficient
amounts at least one month before and for the first three
months following conception.
It is difficult to get enough folate through natural sources to
prevent NTDs. InNew Zealand, blood folate levels amongst
women of childbearing age arecurrently insufficienttoprevent
NTD-affected pregnancies, and reductions in NTDs could be
achieved if morefolicacidwas consumed by this group.
Folic acid supplementation only works for women who plan
their pregnancies and are aware of the importance oftaking
folic acid during the critical period.Around 53% of pregnancies
in New Zealand areunplanned.
As aresult, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking
feedback on options for strengthening fortification of bread or
fortifying wheatflour.
Theconsultationruns from October 1toNovember 12, 2019.
What’s being proposed?
New Zealand’s rate of neural tube defects is higher than it could
be affecting on average 64 pregnancies ayear in New Zealand
and Maoriwomen have higher ratesofaffectedlivebirths than
other groups.
The financial, social, and emotional impact from these birth
defects can be significant for many families, whanau, and
communities across New Zealand.
MPI recognises the importance ofthis issue and is seeking
At Ashburton Montessori wehave 3
children from 4 months to 6 years.
Bambino Piccolo is our nursery for babies and toddlers
aged 4months to 2years. Our teachers in here bring a
vast knowledge of best practice aswell as avariety of
qualifications that allow them to provide the best care
and education for infants and toddlers. The teachers
ensurethathigh qualitycareisatop priority, our teachers
feedback on whether the governmentshould:
• continue with the current voluntaryapproachoffortifying up
to 50% of packaged sliced bread
• ask industry to enhance the voluntary approach to fortify
80% of packaged sliced bread,or
• introduce mandatory fortification of bread, bread-making
wheatflour,orall wheatflour.
Alloptionswould exclude organic products.
“Folic acid fortification is an effective way to reduce our rate of
neural tube defects. There is no conclusive evidence that folic
acid in the amount recommended for fortification has any
harmful effectsonhealth.
“Hearing the views ofthe public will help us understand the
possible impacts of the proposals.”
