Health models in action
Donors who contributed
to the Rural Health Academic
Centre Ashburton
(RHACA), based at Ashburton
Hospital, got an
exclusive simulation
demonstration in the
facility this week.
RHACA partners
from Canterbury DHB,
University of Otago,
Advance Ashburton
Community Foundation,
Mackenzie Charitable
Foundation and individual
donors got see the
centre’s medical simulation
models in use for the
first time.
The introduction of
RHACA at Ashburton
Hospital was first
announced by Advance
Ashburton in 2016.
The project budget
was $450k over three
years and together with
other individual donations,
has enabled the
purchase of three simulation
models.
Initially an adult and
child were installed, and
we are now pleased to
announce the third
‘‘baby’’ simulation model
has arrived in Ashburton.
‘‘Without donations
and support from our
project partners and
Ace shearers get warm welcome in Geraldine
From Page 1
In the individual final
shearers had three Texel
ewes and three Suffolk
lambs to shear.
‘‘I chose to shear the
worst of my Texels first
and didn’t do the best
job on her but asIgot
into my second sheep,
which was better, I got
into a rhythm and
started to build mypace.
‘‘I waspushing so hard
that I could feel my
focus felt like aphysical
tension, like it was a
muscle pushing me forward.
‘‘I had my father in my
pen cheering me on,
which really helped as I
got to thehalf way point.
‘‘Bythe timeIfinished
my third sheep I had
other generous individuals,
we wouldn’t have
been able to establish
this training facility,
which will enable the
rural health workforce to
deliver best practice
care,’’ manager of Ashburton
Health Services,
Bernice Marra says.
‘‘We are thrilled to
offer this opportunity for
our partners and donors
to see the simulation
models being used for
Allan Oldfield and grandfathers pat Dolan, left, and Harry Oldfield.
over the field. I could
occasionally hear the
commentators mention
when shearers went for
their next sheep and I
‘‘As I hit the time
button I had a massive
surge of adrenaline as I
realised what had just
happened.’’
He said it was great to
rural health training,’’
Bernice says.
‘‘The simulation
models (we call them ‘the
Sims’), allow clinical staff
and rural health medical
practitioners to practise
reallife scenarios in a
safe environment where
they can familiarise
themselves with clinical
procedures long before
they apply those skills to
real patients,’’ she says.
The open day simulation
involved a trauma
situation with aperson in
amotorcycle accident. A
team of nurses and doctors
managed the lifethreatening
injuries as if
they were caring for a
patient in the acute
assessment unit of Ashburton
Hospital.
RHACA’s purpose is
not just simulation training
but also research and
teaching. Eighteen other
RHACA research projects
are also under way
and others will be added in
time.
‘‘We are confident the
RHACA will encourage
young medical professionals
who train here to
return after they obtain
their qualifications,’’
Bernice says.
Mr Oldfield said he
was given a gift from
French President
Emmanuel Macron
‘‘which was ahuge surprise’’.
‘‘I think myfather was
more delighted than
anyone, which Ithink is
fair as he hasspentyears
coaching me.’’
He willdefend histitle
in Scotland in 2022.
As Mr Dobbs shore,
the crowd cheered, and
Mr Oldfield, world
champion, gave a commentary,
saying Mr
Dobbs was a master
shearer. Mr Oldfield
had been shearing in the
Falklands before heading
back to Geraldine.
