“Bee” happy
The past few months Canal
Winchester resident Marie Gibbons
noticed bees buzzing around a water
main cap in the street at the end of her
driveway. On Sept. 16, she saw a
swarm of bees forming. She called the
Franklin County Extension Office for a
beekeeper to come and collect the
bees. “He came out and found a rather
large colony of bees (inside the
pipe),” said Gibbons. “He removed
thousands of bees, the brood comb,
and honeycombs. He said it had been
there for years!” The beekeeper gathered
up the bees and found them a
new home.
Pictured here are: (bottom left) the
bees swarming around the water main
cap; (at right) the bees working on
honeycombs that were inside the
pipe, and; (bottom right) the beekeeper
CW explores its relation
to Madison Twp. police
Also, council discusses
bed tax distribution
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Canal Winchester City Council is taking
steps to clarify the working relationship
between the city and the Madison
Township Police Department following
council’s Sept. 30 committee of the whole
meeting.
“We need to work on this partnership,”
said Councilman Pat Lynch, who first
broached the topic and, along with
Councilman Will Bennett, suggested council
create a sub-committee to work on a
document of understanding between the
two entities.
Canal Winchester Law Director Gene
Hollins said the county prosecutor’s office
is working on a memo outlining a process
by which citations written in Canal
Winchester by Madison Township officers
would be handled at the local level in
mayor’s court.
Under state law, township officers have
the jurisdiction to patrol the city and write
citations, which are then handled outside
Canal Winchester’s control.
Hollins said a meeting between the
township, city and county focused on if
township activity picked up, would it make
more sense to have cases heard in Canal
Winchester, which could afford more oversight
financially and statistically.
Under a county-created memorandum
of understanding, charges against a
motorist could then be filed in the local
court.
Discussion also included the ramifications
if the city and the township police
department severed ties with each other,
such as the potential loss of township fire
service or the high cost in creating a city
force.
“The reason a lot of cities and villages
are still in a township is fire service,” said
Hollins.
Canal Winchester Public Service
Director Matt Peoples said the township is
willing to discuss the issue with city officials.
“We’re looking to open up channels of
communication,” said Council President
“We’re looking to open up
channels of communication.”
- Bruce Jarvis,
CW council president
Bruce Jarvis, who suggested the topic be
brought up again during the old and new
business portion of the regular work session
agenda this month.
Bed tax distribution
Council also discussed potential
changes to bed tax fund distribution with
the upcoming addition of more hotel/motel
revenue into city coffers.
“We are getting a lot of additional
hotels,” Lynch said, adding that the city is
projecting $275,000 in bed tax revenue
next year. “It’s a lot of money and the game
has changed, but it’s a great problem to
have.”
According to Councilman Mike
Coolman, the city collects six percent in
bed tax, with half of that going into the
general fund and the other half split
between Destination: Canal Winchester
and the city’s grant award program.
“In order to collect bed tax, we must
have a tourism bureau and that is
Destination: Canal Winchester,” Coolman
said.
Councilman Bob Clark suggested a
quarter of the city’s share be earmarked for
economic development, such as the facade
grant program improving the visual
appearance of downtown businesses.
“It (economic development) is the only
thing that brings in more wealth to our
community,” said Clark.
Canal Winchester to celebrate its history
Two day event planned
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A day of old-time fun preceded by an
evening white-tented gala raising funds for
a trio of historical landmarks will take
place in Canal Winchester this month.
The first-of-its-kind pair of events take
place Oct. 18 and 19 in and around the
grounds of the Canal Winchester Area
Historical Society complex, located at
North High and Oak streets. The site is
home to the Queen of the Line train depot,
Prentiss School and the O.P. Chaney grain
elevator.
On Oct. 18, a ticketed gala–limited to
125 guests age 21 and older and held from
7-10 p.m.–celebrates “Bringing History
Forward” in an intimate setting with food
and beverage.
The cost is $60 for an individual or $100
per couple and may be purchased online at
bringinghistoryforwardcw.com or by check
mailed to CW Historical Society, P.O. Box
15, Canal Winchester, OH 43110. Limited
tickets available. Proceeds from the gala
will be used to improve the society complex.
Canal Winchester Area Historical
Society Trustee Carm Smith said the
grounds will be lit by a professional team
and even though the Oct. 18 gala is a
fundraiser, the driving
force behind the event is to
get people to look at the
space in a different way.
On Oct. 19, the society
opens the grounds for its
first Founders Day celebration
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is free and family-friendly.
Visitors can
enjoy the complex while
meeting a weaver, baker,
candle maker and more.
Old time games such as
pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey,
bucket walk, hula hoops,
etc., will delight young and
old alike. Raffles, food and
beverage will be available
for purchase as well.
“The trustees of the
CWAHS are grateful to
have ownership of the iconic
historical complex,”
Smith said. “We have hopes
and dreams for the future
of the complex and are
working on several big next
steps, but before we partake
in new ventures, we
want folks in and around
our area to spend time
enjoying the special nature
of our unique complex.”
According to Smith,
while the complex housing
the train depot, schoolhouse
and grain elevator is
a beautiful backdrop for
Canal Winchester’s historical district, the
trustees are hoping to get visitors to begin
thinking of the complex in a new and
broader way.
“This became the impetus for the
Founder’s Day event–to get people to fall
in love with the complex by experiencing it
in different way,” said Smith.
The one-room Prentiss School originally
housed students in grades 1-8 and was
built in the latter half of the 19th century.
It was used by children living in the rural
area outside of town and moved to its present
location in 1980. The Queen of the Line
train station was built in 1894 to replace a
previous depot that burned down after a
Messenger photo by Linda Dillman
Area resident Anna Whitmer visits the Canal Winchester
Area Historical Society complex at North High and Oak
streets.
spark from a locomotive landed on the roof.
The present O.P. Chaney grain elevator
was constructed in the late 1870s on an
original sandstone foundation after a previous
structure burned to the ground. It
stands four stories tall.
Both the grain elevator and the railroad
depot are individually listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
“We have the opportunity to let others
explore the history of Canal Winchester in
the late 1800s while creating new memories
for them today,” said CWAHS
President Steve Donahue. “The complex is
a gem for our town — we are willing and
eager to share it with others.”
Historic Ghost Tour will have new twists
By Rick Palsgrove
Eastside Editor
Explore the history of Canal
Winchester with the spirits of the
town’s past at the Canal Winchester
Area Historical Society’s annual
Historic Ghost Tour.
The 14th annual Historic Ghost
Tour will be held on Oct. 11 and 12 and
will feature historic locations throughout
downtown Canal Winchester.
Event-goers will be guided through a
short walking tour as they are entertained
by actors depicting people from
Canal Winchester’s past.
This year’s actors who are portraying
the ghosts are Dwayne Spence,
Mark Saylor, Jr. Jill Amos, Trinity
Yeomans, Julianne Nofsinger, and
Jonathon Pauwels.
Historic tour locations include: The Times Building;
Dr. Saylor’s House; House on the Hill; Holley’s Variety
Store; and Original Funeral Home.
“Mark Saylor will be portraying his father, Dr.
Mark Saylor,” said Sean Cleary of the Canal
Winchester Area Historical Society. “We are also incorporating
three actors from Canal Winchester High
School and will have 11 other students involved with
other aspects of the tour. We are also going to have a
surprise stop where a ghost story will be shared, so
there are some new twists this year.”
Cleary said the Canal Winchester Area Historical
Society is excited to have involvement from the high
school this year and it’s hoped the relationship can be
maintained moving forward.
“To have their enthusiasm for
local history is most welcome and
encouraging,” said Cleary. “We will
also have some old photos and
footage of Canal Winchester previewing
at the Francis Steube
Community Center for those waiting
to go on the tour.”
Cleary said an event like this is
important in regards to helping to
preserve and share Canal
Winchester history.
“History is what distinguishes
one community from another and we
are steeped in history in Canal
Winchester,” said Cleary. “We will
be celebrating the town’s 200 years
in 2028.”
Tours will last approximately 90
minutes and will begin at 7 p.m. each night, with the
last tour departing at 7:30 p.m. All tours will depart
from the Frances Steube Community Center, 22 S.
Trine St.
Tickets will be available at the Community Center
each evening of the tour beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets
are offered at $10 per adult and $5 per student aged 6-
18.
Children age 5 and under will be free. No pets. Tour
proceeds help support the Canal Winchester Area
Historical Society’s core programs and preservation
projects.
Run to the theater to catch this indie film
There was a tremendous amount of buzz surrounding
“Brittany Runs a Marathon” when it premiered on
the festival circuit earlier this year, so much so that it
was quickly snatched up by Amazon Studios for a staggering
$14 million.
While willing to take a chance on a small indie,
Amazon struggled with the decision that all studios do
regarding films without an established base: Do they
roll it out slowly and hope word of mouth carries it far
or do they go nationwide and hope it is not swallowed
into the ether?
Amazon chose the former, releasing the film in larger
markets while sporadically advertising in the small
ones. This, unfortunately, did not prove to be the best
strategy as the film came into the smaller markets
with the buzz of a solo bee in a vast garden.
There is a high probability “Brittany Runs a
Marathon” will be out of the theaters by the time this
review comes to print despite the fact that it literally
just arrived. And if by some chance it is still there, do
yourself a favor and go see it at that very odd time. I
don’t think you will regret it.
Noted supporting actress Jillian Bell
(“Workaholics”, “22 Jump Street”) plays the titular
character, a close-to-30 something whose life has
stalled. In the first few minutes, we get a sense of her
long-held daily patterns — waking up at noon, trying to
survive her dead-end job, cruising the clubs for the
best drinks and available men, becoming sadder by the
moment while looking at her social media feed.
Wanting to address some slight concerns with her
concentration, Brittany schedules an appointment
with a highly rated but cheap doctor in hopes of being
prescribed Adderall to cure her ailments. What he
gives her instead is advice to lose weight. Feeling
affronted by his determination that she “shed the
weight of a medium sized working dog” off her body,
she resolves to push the recommendation to the back of
her mind.
At first, her method of ignoring the issue seems to
work (another long-held pattern, we learn) but then
around Canal Winchester
The sixth annual Run Your ‘Stache Off 5K run/walk
and 1K kid’s run will be held Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. at Canal
participate regardless of age or mustache growing ability.
There will be food, music, and Fairfield County
Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team equipment and vehicles
on site for viewing. Race day registration is from 8-9
a.m. with the 1K for kids age 10 and under at 9:05 a.m.
CW leaf pick up
The city of Canal Winchester will conduct curbside
leaf collection from Oct. 7 through Dec. 13. To avoid
water backup in the event of rain, leaf piles must be
placed behind the curb along the street. Leaf piles
may contain leaves only, as sticks, grass trimmings
she hits a very low
point in her life after a
soul-crushing sexual
encounter and decides
to make a true change for the betterment
of her life.
While “Brittany Runs a
Marathon” may seem like one of
those awful makeover films where
lives are magically transformed
once pounds are shed and fashionable
clothes are purchased, the
meaning within is a little deeper
and closer to reality. This film,
written and directed by Paul
Downs Coliazzo, is actually based
The Reel Deal
Dedra
Cordle
on one of his best friends and the utmost care is shown
with these sensitive subjects. Brittany and her weight
is not played for laughs, nor is her emotional
state/mental health as one obsession (food for comfort)
manifests into another (exercise for self-respect).
Though some serious topics are covered within,
there are plenty of laughs and relatable scenarios to go
around. While the supporting cast of Michaela
Watkins (the nosey neighbor), Micha Stock (the beginner
jogger) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (the loafing love
interest) is great, it is Bell and her performance that
really drives this film. In one of her first leading roles,
Bell is immensely engaging, playing Brittany with
warmth and joy just as easily as she does with the uglier
aspects of her personality and insecurities. She isn’t
always the role model those making life changes are
perceived (or asked) to be, but she is entertaining,
maddening, and real; all of which are portrayed deftly
by Bell. In “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” she is a wonder
to watch and I hope this film can propel her into
more starring roles.
Fall means Apple Butter Day
By Rick Palsgrove
Eastside Editor
One can just sense it in the autumn air
- it’s time for Apple Butter Day.
Groveport’s 46th annual Apple Butter
Day will be held in Groveport’s Heritage
Park, 551 Wirt Road, near and around the
historic log house on Oct. 12 from 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m.
Apple Butter Day is rich in tradition
featuring historical demonstrations,
crafters, and great food - especially the piping
hot, freshly stirred apple butter
slathered on homemade bread. There’s
nothing like the taste of homemade apple
butter cooked over a wood fire to make one
embrace autumn.
Apples were important to Ohio’s and
Groveport’s pioneer agricultural economy
and daily life. Apples could be stored year
round and travelled well when shipped
over the rough roads or the slow moving
freight boats on the Ohio and Erie Canal.
Apples, in addition to being a refreshing
treat picked right off the tree, could be
used in many products used by the pioneers
like dried apples, apple butter, cider,
apple brandy, apple chips, and vinegar.
They were even fed to hogs, which were
important livestock to the Ohio pioneer.
Music and entertainment
Music will grace the festival as the Out
of Mind Bluegrass Band (10 a.m.), Mad
River Tradition (12:15 p.m.), The
Hamiltons (2:15 p.m.), and Bo Richardson
(4:15 p.m.) will perform on the main stage.
The Madison Christian Band (noon) and
acoustic folk band Delightful Sounds
(12:15 p.m.) will perform in front of the log
house. Storyteller Ellen Ford will be at
Palm Pond from 2-4 p.m. Johnny
Appleseed will roam the festival grounds.
Apple Butter Day activities
The day features craft demonstrations,
historical demonstrations, hayrides, pony
rides, children’s activities, and food vendors.
There will also be a display of antique tractors.
A cane fishing derby for kids age 15
and under will be at Palm Pond from 10:30-
11:30 a.m. (sign up at 10 a.m.). The first 50
kids get to fish with a cane pole. Bait is provided.
Remember to buy a raffle ticket for a
chance to win the Apple Butter Day quilt.
The Groveport Log House
A center piece of Heritage Park and
Apple Butter Day is the 1815 era
Groveport Log House.
The log house originally sat on the southwest
corner of Main and Madison streets,
where the Groveport Post Office is now
located. Workers discovered the log house
as they were dismantling it in 1974 to make
way for the Post Office. Volunteers from the
Groveport Heritage Society pitched in to
preserve the house and in 1974, with help
from the United States Army Corps of
Engineers, moved it to its present location
in Heritage Park. The log house will be
open throughout Apple Butter Day.
Sharp’s Landing building
Visitors to Apple Butter Day can get
A special tractor will be part of the
antique tractor display at this year’s
Apple Butter Day in Groveport as Dan
Thomas of Plain City will bring his 1917
Waterloo Boy tractor to the event. The
tractor is a one-of-a-kind, John Deere
restored attraction. Come see the tractor
and listen to Dan Thomas’ story.
glimpse of the area’s Ohio and Erie Canal
past because, across Wirt Road from the
log house and Heritage Park, the
Groveport Heritage Society reconstructed
a 62x21 foot, one story, brick, 19th century
canal era building. Visit the building from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Apple Butter Day.
The building is believed to have been
used as a smokehouse, bakery, and ice
house that sat along the Ohio and Erie
Canal in what was once Sharp’s Landing
at the corner of Rohr and Pontius roads.
In 2015, the Groveport Heritage Society
dismantled the building and had it moved
and reassembled at its current site across
from the log house along Wirt Road. The
building serves as a museum to represent
the commercial life that once operated
along the canal.
Apple Butter Day 5K
Register for the Apple Butter Day 5K
and 1 Mile Walk to be held on Oct. 12. The
route will begin and end in Groveport Park,
7370 Groveport Road. All ages welcome.
The 1-mile walk starts at 9 a.m. and the 5K
at 9:30 a.m. For on-site registrations, register
no less than 20-minutes prior to the start
of your event. Fee is $10 for the 1-mile and
$20 for the 5K. Register through Oct. 12.
Call 614-836-1000 for information.
Free shuttle service
The Groveport Transportation
Department will provide free shuttle service
to and from Apple Butter Day. The
shuttle will leave Groveport Park, 7370
Groveport Road (lower most parking lot)
every half hour at the top and bottom of
the hour beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at
5 p.m. The shuttle will leave the corner of
Wirt Road and Cherry Street every half
hour at the quarter hour beginning at 9:15
a.m. and ending at 5:15 p.m.
No dogs allowed
Per city ordinance, people are prohibited
from bringing animals to city sponsored
event and festival areas, which includes
Apple Butter Day. The law does not apply
to guide or service dogs, police dogs, animal
exhibits at the events, or pets on residential
properties within the event area.

Canal Winchester
Labor Day Festival
The 2019 Canal Winchester Labor Day
Festival is in the books as another successful
hometown event.
While there was some weather that
moved into the area Sunday evening that
cancelled out our bands, it didn’t stop festival
goers from doing just that, coming to
the festival and keeping the food vendors
open until the scheduled closing time.
Saturday we saw people coming into the
festival area more than an hour before its
official start, just browsing around and
getting ready for Free Ride Saturday.
Sunday’s car show was another success
with more than 170 vehicles on display,
despite more threat of rain. C-Town
Cruisers was the host once again this year,
managing what I believe to be one of the
best car shows in Central Ohio.
Kingy’s was back this year after taking
a couple years off to recuperate and did a
fantastic job of running the beer tent and
Monday we saw one of the largest Labor
Day parades we have seen for a few years.
This year’s parade theme was Hero’s and
the BrockStrong Foundation was tapped
By the Labor Day committee as the 2019
parade marshal. The Hero’s theme brought
some interesting and familiar characters
from early television and movie days, making
this year’s parade one of our most popular
for kids of all ages.
It was a fantastic festival and it was
brought to you by a few resident volunteers
who work all year long making it come
together for the benefit of our community.
Major sponsors for the 2019 festival
were Diley Ridge Medical Center, Jeff
Wyler Automotive, HER Kelly Abbott &
the A Team, M. G. Abbott Electric, Central
Ohio Honda Dealers, Waste Management,
Mr. & Mrs. V R Hershberger & the Joiner
Family / Hersh Packing and Rubber
Company, Park National Bank, Mac’s
NAPA Auto Parts, Madison Township,
Violet Township, City of Canal
Winchester, Weaver Law Office, Vinton
County Bank / Canal Banking Center, The
Insurance Circle, Canal Wigwam and several
Friends of the Festival, monetary
donors, all of whom are very much appreciated.
This year we raised $1,040 for one of our
columbusmessenger.com
letters
neighbors, the Wagnalls Memorial &
Library Building Fund, with a 50/50 and a
TV raffle. The building is in need of over
$400,000 in repairs.
The volunteers work their tails off each
and every year making it happen and
doing their best to bring you an event you
can be proud of as the longest running and
largest Labor Day festival in the state. The
year 2020 will mark the 100th anniversary
of the Canal Winchester Labor Day
Festival and it will be better than ever.
Now is the time to become involved in a
once in a lifetime opportunity to volunteer
or financially support the 100th, as our
total budget and workload will be more
than double. Plans are to have entertainers
never seen before in Canal Winchester
and may never be seen again, that is why
the committee needs your help to make it
happen in, “The Greatest Little City In
Ohio.”
Mike Ebert, mayor
Canal Winchester
Tragedy at Diley
I am very sad to hear that Scott Davis
was killed in an act of senseless violence at
the Diley Ridge Medical Center on Sept.
13. Scott was a founding member of the
Groveport Men’s Tennis Team. Scott was
my teammate and friend. Scott was a respiratory
therapist at Diley Ridge and just
happened to be covering the front desk
when the truck was intentionally driven
into the building, killing him and injuring
several others. Scott was a great teammate
and an even better person. Our community
has lost a good man. Tomorrow is not
promised my friends. Scott spent every day
helping people, he will be missed.
Lawrence (Larry) and Janet Dowler, from Groveport, were
married October 17, 1959 at Obetz Lutheran Church. Janet's
father, Rev Walter Lindemuth officiated. It was a beautiful,
sunny, fall afternoon. Jan's brother introduced them on a blind
was born and organized the Groveport Apple Butter Day
antique tractor show 24 years ago. He currently drives a
senior transportation bus in Columbus and sings in the
Groveport Community choir. Jan worked 25 years at Groveport
Pharmacy and has played the organ and piano at several
different churches over the last 50 years. Various church and
community activities play a key role for both of them. The
Dowlers have been residents of Groveport for all 60 years.
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
positions with benefits. Interested
individuals should submit an application
on our website at swcsd.us. Follow the
Clients are scattered throughout the U.S. Our company delivers new units,
Company performs background checks and drug-screening tests as part of the
