Lights for major Rolleston intersection

A MAJOR intersection in 

Rolleston will get traffic lights 

by the middle of next year, 

The project is expected to cost 

$3.2 million. 

This includes the cost of design 

work for another intersection 

upgrade in the township.

at Lowes Rd and Tennyson 

St. 

The lights will help to 

ease congestion and improve 

safety at the intersection, he 

said.

FIFTY-FOUR objections 

have been made against an 

application for a liquor store in 

Tai Tapu. 

Gulati Brothers Enterprises Ltd 

has applied to the district council 

for an off-licence to operate a 

liquor store in the vacant Belleza 

Boutique building on Christchurch 

Akaroa Rd. 

If approved, it would operate 

Monday-Sunday, 10am-9pm, under 

the name of Tai Tapu Liquor 

Store. 

The police and the Canterbury 

District Health Board medical 

officer of health are among the 

objectors. 

Tai Tapu Community 

Association is trying to stop the 

liquor store getting a licence. 

Chairman Gerald Carter said 

they are against it for a number of 

reasons. 

“The key ones being it is 

inappropriate to have it in a small 

village such as Tai Tapu. The 

community is already served by 

a hotel close by that has a bottle 

store with it and Lincoln is close 

by.

Ellesmere rugby awards (pages 23-23). 

The good thing about awards nights 

is every category is as important as the 

next – to those who are getting the awards 

anyway. 

The awards are a culmination of a season’s work, whether it be 

on or off the field. 

Darfield flanker Haigh Jebson took out the senior player 

award for a great season, capped by being part of Ellesmere’s 

winning Southbridge Shield campaign. 

Jebson said his Darfield teammates were a big part of his 

progress in 2019. 

On another rugby note, we profile Bevan Sisson (pages 10-11).

Show aims to 

celebrate Selwyn 

THE SELWYN Spring Show on 

Saturday is all about celebrating 

the district. 

The Ellesmere A & P Association 

is hosting its 149th annual 

event with the theme ‘celebrating 

Selwyn’. 

“It is about recognising the 

special qualities of the Selwyn 

District and celebrating all things 

country,” association secretary 

Vikki Prendergast said. 

The event will take place at 

the Ellesmere Showgrounds in 

Leeston. 

The show attracts visitors, 

competitors, judges and organisers 

from all over the South Island 

and this year it will host the final 

of the International Mounted 

Games for the first time. 

Mounted Games is a branch of 

equestrian sport in which games 

are played by people on ponies up 

to a height of 15 hands. 

Teams from South Africa, 

Australia, Canada, United States, 

Pakistan and New Zealand will 

compete in the first event of its 

kind for the South Island. 

Ms Prendergast said they are 

honoured to be 

hosting the event. 

“It will feature 

teams from 

around the world, 

demonstrating 

agility, speed and 

horsemanship at the 

highest level.” 

The event is undoubtedly 

the best 

day in the district, 

she said. 

“Where else can 

you see everything 

from chickens to alpacas, 

horse riding 

to sheep shearing? 

You can come and savour the 

good food, wine and craft beer 

and watch cookery demonstrations 

and enjoy the many displays 

on show.”

“As a child I grew 

up in the Ellesmere 

area, attending the 

Catholic primary 

school and Ellesmere 

College in Leeston, 

before graduating 

with a degree in Farm Management 

and Rural Valuation from 

Lincoln University. 

“After years of entering chooks 

and pet lambs in the show as a 

child, I took my turn parking 

cars for Sudeley Park before 

trying my luck at dog trialling. I 

was asked to join the association 

in 2002 and after roles on various 

sub-committees gathering insight 

into how the show is run.” Mr

WASTE BYLAW ADOPTED 

The district council has voted to 

adopt the Waste Management 

and Minimisation Bylaw 

2019. The key changes relate 

to kerbside collection times, 

waste management plans 

for commercial or industrial 

resource and building consents, 

as well as events. The new bylaw 

changes the times that wheelie 

bins, bags and crates need to 

be kerbside. From November 

4, all Selwyn residents will 

need to ensure that all rubbish, 

recycling and organics are 

out by 6.30am.It also requires 

people applying to run an 

event or for a commercial or 

industrial resource or building 

consent to include a plan on 

minimising waste as part of the 

consent. 

FUNDING APPLICATIONS 

The Selwyn Community 

Fund is closing at the end 

of this month. The fund is 

designed to support events 

and activities that make the 

district a great place to live, 

work and play by contributing 

to community well-being, 

bringing communities together 

and attracting visitors to 

Selwyn. Applications close

The work is a part of a 

project to upgrade three major 

intersections in Rolleston. 

For the project to go ahead, 

funding has been transferred 

from one of the other upgrades 

due to a $2.5 million shortfall. 

The roundabout at the intersection 

of Rolleston Drive and 

Tennyson St was planned to be 

removed and replaced with traffic 

lights also. 

The project was set down in the 

district council’s 2018-28 Long 

Term Plan and was expected 

to be completed in the 2020/21 

financial year. 

The work was expected to be 

completed alongside the Lowes 

Rd and Tennyson St upgrade and 

an extension of Markham Drive 

with the installation of traffic 

lights at Dryden Ave. 

Mr Mazey said detailed designs 

have been completed and 

construction cost estimates have 

been determined for each of the 

projects. 

“It became apparent through 

detailed construction cost 

estimates produced for each 

of the projects, that there is an 

estimated $2.5 million funding 

shortfall if all three projects were 

sought to be constructed at the 

same time,” he said.

set to be upgraded in a bid 

to make them safer. 

The crossings at Hoskyns 

Rd in Rolleston, Frasers 

and Boundary Creek Rds 

in Dunsandel and State 

Highway One near Selwyn 

Creek Rd will be upgraded. 

The crossing at Sheats 

Rd in Dunsandel will be 

closed permanently. 

The improvements are a 

part of the Safe Network 

Programme which focuses 

on safety improvements 

on high-risk routes across 

New Zealand to make 

roads more forgiving of 

people’s mistakes. 

The work is being commissioned 

by the New 

Zealand Transport Agency 

and KiwiRail. 

An NZTA spokesperson 

said there had been two 

serious crashes at the 

Frasers Rd crossing in 2012 

and 2013. 

SH1 at Selwyn had two 

serious injury crashes in 

2006 and 2007 and there 

have been no recorded serious 

crashes at the Boundary 

Creek and Hoskyns 

Rds crossings. 

Sheats Road had one serious 

injury crash in 2007. 

“Crash numbers are not 

the only factor in deciding 

to improve safety at 

a crossing. Other factors 

include near misses, the 

location of the crossing 

relative to the state highway 

network, sites where a 

long vehicle may be forced 

to stop over the tracks, 

proximity to corners and 

intersections, and speed 

limits on the section of 

road and nearby roads,” 

the spokesperson said. 

The reason behind the 

permanent closure of the 

Sheats Rd crossing is due 

to its location and the low 

numbers of vehicles that 

use it. 

“Closing this crossing is 

the safest option, particularly 

as there is another 

crossing in the near vicinity 

that is being upgraded. 

Because this crossing is so 

close to the state highway, 

there’s a risk that people 

driving cars or trucks 

queue over the crossing 

while waiting to turn on to 

the highway. 

“Likewise, there’s also 

the risk that drivers wishing 

to turn into Sheats 

Road, who have to wait for 

a train to pass at the crossing, 

queue on the highway 

itself,” the spokesperson 

said. 

Upgrades at the Hoskyns 

Rd crossing will include 

improvements of the existing 

pedestrian crossing. 

A rubber material that 

fills the gap between 

the road and the tracks, 

STRAIL, will be installed 

along with flashing lights, 

a bell and automatic gates. 

Existing road marking 

and signage will also be 

refreshed to meet relevant 

standards 

The work is still in the 

design phase and a starting 

date is yet to be set. 

At the SH1 near Selwyn 

Creek Rd crossing, the 

rail crossing surface and 

road safety barrier will be 

replaced. 

Road marking and 

signage at approaches on 

the SH1 will be improved 

to meet standards with the 

addition of active warning 

signs on SH1. 

The work is due to begin 

in November. 

The crossings at Boundary 

Creek and Frasers Rds 

will both get half arm barriers, 

flashing lights and a 

bell, these will replace the 

current flashing lights and 

bell at Boundary Creek Rd. 

Road marking and 

signage will be improved 

at the crossings and active 

warning signs linked to the 

rail signals are proposed 

for short-stacked vehicles 

on the roads and vehicles 

approaching the side roads 

on SH1. 

The work at both crossings 

is expected to start in 

early 2020. 

The closure of the 

crossing at Sheats Rd will 

include removing all surfacing 

and signage adjacent 

to the crossing and fencing 

it off at Sheats Rd. 

Signs and road marking 

will be adjusted to reflect 

the changes and avoid 

confusion. 

Sheats Rd will also be 

converted into a no exit 

road with a turning area at 

the end. 

The crossing is due for 

closure next year.

Election 2019 wrap: New 

All results are preliminary. 

Final results are expected on 

Thursday. 

THERE WILL be three new 

faces around the district council 

table at the inaugural meeting 

later this month. 

Newcomer Shane Epiha has 

been elected in the Ellesmere 

Ward with 997 votes alongside 

returning councillor Murray 

Lemon who secured 1832 votes. 

Malvern Community Board 

chairwoman Jenny Gallagher 

has been elected in the Malvern 

Ward on 1744 votes, ahead of returning 

councillor Bob Mugford 

who has also been elected. 

Michelle Jones or Sophie 

McInnes is set to take the fourth 

Selwyn Central Ward spot. 

There are currently only seven 

votes separating both first-time 

candidates with final results being 

released on Thursday. 

The voter turnout was 41.86 

per cent totalling 16,868 votes, 

excluding special votes. 

That is down from 44.5 per

problems we have

how we can bring a 

maintainable perspective 

to council,” 

she said.

Mr Broughton said he was very 

happy with the result and wanted to 

thank Selwyn for their support. 

Mr Broughton said the district 

council had made a lot of progress 

over the last three years. 

This includes making made major 

investments in community infrastructure, 

completed earthquake works, 

and changing its consultation process 

to focus on speaking with residents on 

streets rather than in meetings. 

He said it will be important the district 

council keeps costs in line with 

what it has signalled to ratepayers. 

Mr Woods said he had stood to give 

people an alternative.

Ward candidates are waiting 

with bated breath for the final 

local body election results to 

be released. 

Preliminary results show 

Sophie McInnes currently 

holds the fourth district 

council spot for the ward but 

Michelle Jones is sitting just 

seven votes behind her. 

Special votes are still to be 

counted and the final results 

will be released on Thursday. 

Mrs McInnes currently sits 

on 2306 votes and Mrs Jones 

is on 2299. 

Calvin Payne isn’t far 

behind that with 2202 votes. 

Mrs McInnes said it feels 

like she is in a holding pattern 

waiting to hear the 

results. 

“It is exciting but I think I 

probably would rather know. 

I know Michelle will do a 

great job if she gets it, it is a 

lot harder when you like the 

person,” she said.

“I am looking forward to

“Either way, it is a good

More success for piper

CAMPBELL Wilson’s list 

of bagpiping success has 

continued. 

Last week, the Tai Tapu 

16-year-old won the New Zealand 

Young Piper of the Year 

award for the second year in a 

row. 

“It feels pretty surreal, all I 

wanted to do in Nelson was to 

play good tunes, and that was 

what I did,” Campbell said. 

At the competition held in 

Nelson last week, Campbell won 

all three under-21 events, the 

Piobaireachd, March, Strathspey 

and Reel, and the Hornpipe jig. 

“It’s certainly one of the most 

prestigious awards I’ve won in 

New Zealand, for sure,” he said. 

In August, Campbell won 

the under-18 Piobaireachd and 

under-18 March, Strathspey 

and Reel events at the Northern 

Meeting in Inverness, Scotland. 

In the piping world, the annual 

Northern Meeting is the 

most prestigious competition for 

solo pipers around the world. 

He made history at the Hastings 

Highland Games in April 

when he became the youngest 

ever winner of the New Zealand 

Gold Medal for Piobaireachd. 

Campbell said he practices 

about five or six hours each week 

and usually has a lesson on the 

weekend with his father. 

He said the hours he practices 

when competitions are not in the 

near future seem extensive, but 

when competitions are on the 

horizon, he feels well prepared. 

Campbell’s father Greg Wilson 

is classified as one of the 

top pipers in the world – and 

doubles as his tutor. 

“He [Greg] has been the 

backbone of my piping successes.

Cashmere Club as part of the Christchurch Big Band Festival. 

Band ready to perform 

THE ELLESMERE Big Band 

will feature in the pop-up 

Christchurch Big Band Festival. 

The event will see between 40 

to 60 short performances in popup 

locations through the streets 

of the CBD between October 24 

and 28. 

The Ellesmere Big Band will 

perform at the Cashmere Club 

on October 25 as part of the 

festival. 

They will play alongside the 

Ellensburg Big Band from New 

Hampshire in the United States. 

The band formed in 1902 

and in 2004, with the addition 

of saxophones and a rhythm 

section, it became known as the 

Ellesmere Concert Band. 

In 2014, the band moved to its 

current big band style. 

The group rehearse in the 

Ellesmere Brass Band Hall which 

was built in 1905 and has a long 

history of appearances at local 

community events. 

Band chairman Alexander 

Hayward said the group is looking 

forward to the performance. 

“Our band leader Matt Davis 

and the band members are 

excited about the chance to share 

the occasion with visitors,” he 

said. 

The Christchurch Big Band 

Festival has been running for 

over a decade. 

Performances will be held 

in numerous venues including 

the newly reopened James Hay 

Theatre.

Two years since Clare’s last Little River gallery show, 

and much has changed in her life; she has moved south 

to Blueskin Bay and fashioned a new existence after the 

death of her life partner and fellow artist, Max Podstolski. 

Last September Clare travelled to Spain to walk part of 

the Camino, raising money for Leukaemia and Blood 

Cancer New Zealand, as a way of giving something to 

help others coping with a terminally ill loved one and a 

way of self-healing.

IT HAS been 25 years but 

volunteer firefighter Roger Sheat 

is not slowing down anytime 

soon. 

Since joining the Leeston Volunteer 

Fire Brigade in 1994, Mr 

Sheat has responded to a number 

of memorable calls. 

But he said his biggest challenge 

to date was the Port Hills 

fires in 2017. 

He said it was the longest campaign 

fire he has been involved 

in. 

Now, the 59-year-old has 

been awarded a gold star to mark 

his 25 years of service to the 

brigade. 

Mr Sheat said he is very proud 

to be a member of the Leeston 

brigade and Fire and Emergency 

NZ. 

“The time has just flown by. It 

really doesn’t feel like it’s been 25 

years,” he said. 

The 2010 earthquake is another 

memorable call for him, he says 

it was one of the busier times 

locally. 

Mr Sheat also responded to the 

February 22, 2011, earthquake in 

Christchurch. 

“It was just mind-blowing 

to see the power of nature and 

the damage that series of earthquakes 

caused,” he said. 

He said there have been a 

number of house fires and motor 

vehicle crashes that always stay 

with him for various reasons. 

Mr Sheat works for PGG 

Wrightson Seeds as an arable 

seeds representative in the 

Springs-Ellesmere area. 

He said he joined the brigade 

after being asked by a neighbour. 

“They asked if I would like 

to join and I’d stopped playing 

competitive sport so it seemed 

like a good idea. I also had a 

brother in the Dunsandel brigade 

so it wasn’t a hard decision.” 

He stayed so long because it

involved in. 

“You are looked to provide help 

to people who are probably having 

the worst moment in their 

lives whether it be a medical 

event, motor vehicle accident or 

property fire. We turn up to give 

them the best outcome for the 

challenges they face.” 

Mr Sheat said he plans on 

staying with the brigade for the 

foreseeable future. 

“As long as I’m still able to 

contribute I intend to remain but 

it really is an organisation 

that requires full commitment 

to training and all brigade 

activities,” he said.

I hear you are a Cantabrian 

who found his way to North 

Harbour? 

I went up to North Harbour 

when I was 17 or 18 and played 

rugby for East Coast Bays, I met 

my wife (Vanessa) through there 

as she played for North Harbour. 

I was a hooker and played 

division one up there, made 

some trial teams but that was my 

level and we were there for 10 

years. 

We came back to Christchurch 

on a six-month trial about 18 

years ago. 

How was your childhood? 

I grew up down here and 

went to Shirley Boys’ High 

School. 

Back then, things were a bit 

different, I got out of there at 15, 

school wasn’t my thing. 

I only passed one subject – 

English. I never went to the other 

exams. I’d realised I probably 

wasn’t going to pass (school cert)

so I’d better get a job. I actually 

got a job before the end of that 

year. 

I didn’t tell Mum so I’d get 

dressed up in my school gear 

walk to the end of the road, get 

changed and then I worked for 

a guy who was a monumental 

mason as a labourer. 

At the end of the day he’d 

drop me off at the end of the 

street and I’d get change back 

into my school gear and come 

home. 

How did the chance to go 

north come about? 

I got offered a job truck 

driving and I ended up playing 

rugby as part of that. 

North Harbour had Slade 

McFarland (former New Zealand 

Maori hooker) who would beat 

me into the rep teams. 

I was going to come home after 

a couple of years because I hadn’t 

made it in the North Harbour set 

up but I had a friend who wanted 

me to stay and he offered me a 

job at an emporium business 

which was great because I was 

sick of truck driving by that 

point. 

When did you hang up the 

boots and start to look at 

coaching? 

It was only when I looked at it 

when we came back in the early 

2000s, I was in my mid-30s and 

we didn’t know anyone so 

I opened up the phone book 

where we were living in 

Avonhead and looked for 

the closest rugby club which 

happened to be Burnside. 

I played one year for them and 

it was just to meet some guys and 

the team ended up winning. 

The next year I was pretty 

broken physically and the senior 

B team needed a coach so I 

thought I’d help out and I did 

that for a couple of years and I 

realised it was a lot of fun and I 

kept doing it a few years. 

One year we made a semi-final 

and that’s when I started to get a 

lot of satisfaction out of it.

Plan to rid Arthur’s Pass 

of native plant pests 

A PLANNED community event 

aims to rid rivers of pest plants 

and protect native species in 

Arthur’s Pass. 

The Protecting Our Rivers 

annual event was thought 

up by Colleen Philip of ECO 

Canterbury in support of the 

work done by the Arthur’s Pass 

Wildlife Trust. 

The idea is to bring together 

as many people and groups as 

possible to remove lupins, gorse, 

broom and sedge. 

The weeds make the 

environment uninhabitable for 

many native plants.

Canterbury, North Canterbury 

Forest & Bird, Conservation 

Volunteers NZ, Sustainable 

Ōtautahi Christchurch and the 

Department of Conservation 

will take part. 

It is hoped that by the end of 

the season the volunteers will 

have covered a total of 250ha.

different,” she said. 

Ms Bower said the timing of 

the working bee will mean that 

the volunteers catch the lupins 

in their early stage of flowering 

which is better than the flowers 

already being developed and 

seeding. 

It is hoped that lupins can 

be eradicated from the area 

completely.

Plan to change blood spinning rules 

But racing industry under pressure to ban it 

EXTRACTION: Harness Racing New Zealand has made 

changes to the practice of blood spinning.

CHANGES HAVE been made to 

the rules around blood spinning 

in the harness racing industry. 

But Harness Racing New 

Zealand is refusing to go public 

with the revised rules. 

The process of blood spinning, 

also known as ACS or PRP, 

involves collecting blood from the 

horse using a needle, processing 

it in a laboratory, and then reinjecting 

it back into the horse. 

In July, The Star reported 

HRNZ would review the rules of 

the practice after the controversial 

process was slammed by industry 

veteran David Phillips. He made a 

submission on the Special Review 

of Racing Integrity Bodies, as part 

of Minister for Racing Winston 

Peters’ Messara Report. 

In the submission, Mr Phillips 

said the process is cruel and 

called for it to be banned. 

Animal welfare groups PETA, 

SPCA and SAFE have also raised 

concerns about the process and its 

effect on animals. 

HRNZ says the process is used 

as a therapeutic treatment to aid 

the healing of horses’ injuries. 

HRNZ general manager 

corporate services Liz Bishop 

said proposed changes to the 

rules were approved at an annual 

conference at the end of last 

month. 

“There is a formal process to 

go through before these changes 

are incorporated into the HRNZ 

rules of racing, which will happen 

over the next month,” she said. 

“The revised rules of racing 

will be published on the HRNZ 

website, once this process is 

completed,” she said. 

The rules currently state the 

process must be used only when 

prescribed by a vet and cannot 

be done within one clear day of 

racing. 

It is understood the new 

rules may involve a seven-day 

withholding period on the reintroduction 

of the extracted 

blood. 

However, Mr Phillips said 

“tinkering with the number of 

days (by a day or two or even 

week or two) pre-race spun blood 

can be used is useless. 

“No horses should be prepared 

for any racing on a ‘diet’ of spun 

blood or EPO or other artificial 

enhancers. Racing should not 

be about who has the best and 

latest ‘vet’ product. It should be 

about horses competing on a level 

playing field. Why has (HRNZ) 

introduced a seven-day ban, 

when before it argued vocally a 

one-day ban 

was sufficient?

Catchpole signs off after 

60 years with Hornby

PREBBLETON resident John 

Catchpole took a last-minute 

ticket to the Canterbury Rugby 

Awards night last week and 

ended up being named volunteer 

of the year. 

“My son offered me a ticket 

because he said his wife couldn’t 

go and I thought it would be a 

good night then all of a sudden I 

hear my name being called.” 

The outgoing Hornby Rugby 

Club president said it was quite a 

surprise. 

“It was an amazing feeling, 

totally overwhelming.” 

Mr Catchpole, who was born 

and raised in Hornby, first joined 

the club in 1959 as an under-5 

player. 

A talented first-five eighth, he 

moved through the ranks at the 

club and made his senior debut 

the year Hornby was promoted 

to the top-flight of Christchurch 

rugby in 1975. 

He played senior rugby until 

1983. 

He then joined a fourth grade A 

side which went unbeaten for five 

seasons and a total of 83 games. 

He was still playing into his 

40s but joined the committee as 

club captain in 1998 and became

president in 2005, a position he 

held until the end of this winter. 

“The timing was right, it’s been 

60 years in the club and I retire 

from work at the end of the year 

so it just felt right.” 

“Hornby has always been home 

for me, we moved out of the area 

five years ago and went to Prebbleton 

but I still work in Hornby. 

“My favourite saying is that 

we give people a chance to get 

involved and participate. 

“The club has been a big part 

of my life and I’ve made life-long 

friends, people I see regularly for 

a drink on a Friday night.” 

Mr Catchpole, who was made 

a life member in 2012, said he 

would still be a regular on the 

sidelines. 

“The great thing is that I’ll be 

able to go and watch any games 

I want now but I’ll certainly still 

be around the place, it’s like a 

second home.”

Foul-smelling stink bug 

THERE ARE several shield 

bugs in New Zealand and 

one of the smaller species is 

the Pittosporum shield bug 

(Monteithiella 

humeralis) at 

10mm long. 

THis species 

arrived from 

Australia and was 

first detected here 

in New Zealand in 

1950 and is now 

found throughout the country. 

As its common name 

suggests, its host is a number of 

Pittoporum species including 

karo, kohuhu and lemonwood. 

THe bug has a straw-like 

piercing mouthpart that it uses 

to suck sap from trees. They 

are also known as stink bugs as 

they can release a foul-smelling 

defensive chemical from special 

glands to deter predators. 

THe adults when 

overwintering are often 

gregarious, probably due to 

an aggregation pheromone. 

Breeding occurs from October 

to late summer and females lay 

eggs in a cluster. 

Up to 14 blue-green eggs, 

1mm in diameter, are laid in a 

cluster. The eggs 

change to white 

and develop an 

eye spot before 

hatching. Nymphs 

to adults can range 

in colour from 

brown to black, 

and younger stages 

often have two white or yellow 

dots on the abdomen. 

Adults develop two pairs of 

wings. The species can have 

one to three generations per 

year depending on the climate. 

Another larger (13-17mm), 

foul-smelling species is the 

brown marmorated stink bug 

(Halyomorpha halys). 

Many of these have been 

intercepted at our ports by MPI 

and are a very serious pest. We 

certainly do not want them in 

New Zealand, so check out the 

MPI website if you see a larger 

stink bug.

There are two “road trips” planned; one to the Ecodrop on Friday 1st 

November to learn all about recycling processes. This will be followed by a 

lunch in Lincoln to “talk rubbish”. The Final trip of the two week “Trail” will 

be to a Sustainable Winery where we will learn about their practices over a 

light lunch and a drink. This finale is lunch time Sunday 17th November.

Lincoln rider claims third national title 

LINCOLN’S LUCY Turner 

has proved she definitely is one 

of New Zealand’s best young 

riders when she won her third 

national young rider three-day 

eventing title, on Sunday, at 

McLeans Island. 

In the process, the 20-yearold 

was the best performed 

pony club rider, and was s 

econd in the Springston/ 

South Island three-day event 

accumulator. 

She had previously 

won the title in 2016 

and 2018.

“He was amazing, 

he just tried so hard 

for me and I am just so 

happy about that,” she said. 

She said winning her third 

title was a thrill. 

“Gosh, it’s not bad to get 

another young rider title under 

my belt, the last two I won was 

on Carbon so to get a title like 

that on my beautiful young 

horse is awesome.” 

Astek Victor is a horse with a 

big future too. 

“I was lucky enough to 

get him from Sam Taylor 

who produced him to 1.05m, 

and I have taken him from 

there. 

“He had a couple of buttons 

before I got him. And now yes,

added I think.” 

As to the immediate future, 

Turner is thinking she will 

head to the Puhinui threeday 

event in December in 

Auckland. 

“It wouldn’t be bad to 

grab that accumulator 

prize,” she said. 

“Also, this has really 

been my first proper 

run this season, so it 

would be good to do 

another big event.” 

Turner has one more 

chance to win another 

young rider title next 

year. 

Olympian Heelan Tompkins 

holds the record of five young 

rider titles (1996-2000), so 

Turner won’t be able to beat 

that, but she’s hoping she 

doesn’t stop at three titles.

Two major roading projects in Rolleston are expected to be completed in 2020. 

The Council has agreed to bring forward upgrades to the intersection of Lowes Road/Tennyson 

Street and to the extension of Markham Way, which will see roading changes to Norman Kirk 

Drive and a new intersection created at Dryden Avenue. The projects were scheduled for 2020/21 

but are now due to be completed this financial year. 

Council Transportation Asset manager Andrew Mazey says 13,000 vehicles a day travel along 

the affected area of Rolleston Drive and 11,000 vehicles per day travel across the Lowes Road 

intersection to and from Tennyson Street. Lowes Road traffic is expected to increase significantly 

once the Southern Motorway interchange at Weedons Road is fully opened. 

The upgrades will make traffic flows smoother and prepare the town for growth in the future, 

he says. 

Both projects will see traffic lights installed along with new lanes and cycleways. This will support 

the growing number of Rolleston High School students who cycle through the Lowes Road/ 

Tennyson Street intersection to and from school, Mr Mazey says. 

The Markham Way extension will connect Norman Kirk Drive with Markham Way, removing the 

intersection of Norman Kirk Drive and Rolleston Drive and creating a new single intersection between 

Rolleston Drive, Markham Way and Dryden Avenue, which will be controlled by traffic lights. 

This will help with traffic build-up and make it simpler for Rolleston School pupils by replacing the 

volunteer-operated school kea crossing. It will link up with the new Rolleston Town Centre, provide 

access to the new Health Hub, when this is built, and improve access to nearby subdivisions. 

The Council also agreed to defer planned traffic lights for the Rolleston Drive/Tennyson Street 

intersection to secure funding and minimise disruption to traffic. It allocated the funding that had 

been budgeted for that project to the Lowes/Road Tennyson Street upgraded. 

The Council approved a budget of $3.2 million for the Lowes Road/Tennyson Street upgrade and 

$2.6 million for the Dryden Avenue/Markham Way extension. 

Fresh start for families 

The next step in a fresh start was celebrated at Selwyn’s monthly Citizenship Ceremony. 

A group of 29 people from 11 different countries took the oath to become New Zealand citizens. Family 

was a key focus for all the new citizens. Many young families were among the group becoming Kiwis 

and spoke about moving to New Zealand for a fresh start for their children. Craig Smith, from South 

Africa, told the group the timing of the ceremony was special for his family, coming six years to the day 

since they moved to New Zealand. 

“We came for the kids primarily, but it’s given all of us such a fantastic life. We’re very thankful to be here.” 

Sam Ragnarsson, from Iceland, said the day was a highlight after many years of planning and hoping. 

“We have been all over the world. My wife is 

Chinese and we have lived in America, Japan, 

China, but we have really found ourselves here 

and settled. It’s so beautiful. The people are 

beautiful and we’re thankful to be part of it.” 

Atal Safi from Afghanistan said he moved to 

New Zealand for love, after his sister, who was 

living here, introduced him to a friend who 

would soon become his wife. Originally based 

in Auckland the family moved to Canterbury 

for work and decided to base themselves in 

Rolleston to build a house and be close to work. 

They are loving the beauty of New Zealand and 

the friendliness of the people, he says. “For 

me I never thought I would come this far. This

flying start in Selwyn

A gorgeous Canterbury day had hundreds of motorbike riders 

out on SH75 on Saturday 5 October, stopping for the first of 

three Kickstart events for motorcyclists in October. 

The Selwyn District Council started the ball rolling with a coffee 

stop at Tai Tapu, the start of the SH75 Akaroa motorcycle route, 

offering people a free coffee and information on the ACC Ride 

Forever training programme. 

A second Kickstart event was held on the weekend at Little River 

and the final Kickstart event will be held in Oxford this Sunday

and organisations that contribute to community wellbeing 

through our Community Fund. 

The fund is available for Selwyn based not-for-profit 

community groups who are looking to run a project, event 

or initiative in the Selwyn district.

To improve efficiency, we’re changing the time that you need to have your wheelie bins, bags and crates 

kerbside. 

From Monday 4 November, all Selwyn residents will need to ensure that all rubbish, recycling and 

organics are out by 6.30am on their collection day. 

The change is part of the new Waste Management Bylaw which was passed by Council last week. 

The new bylaw will require some event organisers and people applying for a commercial or industrial 

resource consent, or building consent to include a waste management plan showing how they are 

managing and minimising waste. The Council will be working with industry over the coming year to 

develop simple templates to assist this.

Jebson was named senior 

player of the year at the annual 

Ellesmere Rugby Awards on 

Friday night at the Dunsandel 

Community Centre. 

Jebson capped a strong club 

campaign with being a key member 

of Ellesmere’s Southbridge 

Shield winning team during the 

representative season. 

“I still am quite lost for words, 

it was shocking,” he said. 

“I wasn’t expecting anything 

at all.” 

Jebson said his goal before the 

season was to make the Ellesmere 

team and get some minutes off 

the bench. 

“He ended up being Ellesmere’s 

starting on the side of the scrum. 

The 22-year-old praised Darfield’s 

team culture as a big part 

of his success. 

“The culture is really good 

out here at the moment with the 

senior guys really setting a tone,” 

he said. 

Jebson said he prides himself 

on being a good defender who 

enjoyed the physicality but he did 

try to work on his ball-carrying. 

He said he aimed to “bulk-up 

over the summer to try to push 

for Canterbury B selection in 

2020. 

Lincoln High School and 

Waihora utility back Wil Gualter 

was named under-18 player of 

the year after making the New 

Zealand schools’ team and being 

a standout in the UC Championship. 

Lincoln prop Isaac Roth was 

named under-21 player of the 

year after propping the Ellesmere 

scrum to a Southbridge Shield 

victory over North Canterbury. 

Lincoln No 8 Sam Henderson 

was named under-19 player of the 

year. 

Scott McIlroy was named 

rugby personality of the year.

secretary in a weak moment 

over a few gins one night.” 

She said it was a huge honour

“It’s quite humbling you don’t 

get into doing volunteering for 

awards, you do it to make a contribution. 

“It feels like more of a club 

award than anything. 

“I can be as bossy as I like but 

if you don’t have people around 

you willing to look alongside you, 

then it doesn’t really work.” 

She said with the club’s centenary 

and hosting the Coleman 

Shield final made it a massive 

season. 

“I think we all got to the end of 

the season and took a big gulp of 

air and finally relaxed.”

OUTGOING DARFIELD Rugby 

Club president Scott McIlroy is 

more used to giving out awards 

than receiving them himself. 

The 35-year-old was given 

personality of the year honour on 

Friday night after a big year on 

and off the field. 

“It was a bloody big shock, I 

wasn’t expecting it,” he said. 

McIlroy, initially retired from 

senior rugby in 2017 to focus on 

leading the club but he has kept 

the boots on and pulled doubleduty 

propping a Darfield senior 

scrum that is one of the best in 

the district. 

McIlroy has played more than 

200 games for the senior team and 

is a damaging ball-runner even 

with a “bad knee” that was meant 

to force him into retirement two 

seasons ago, 

McIlroy scored three tries in 

Darfield’s 22-21 Coleman Shield 

semifinal win over Springston in 

July and also dotted down in the 

final where his team lost 16-12 

against Southbridge. 

McIlroy has committed to another 

senior season in 2020. 

“We’re getting closer to 

that Coleman Shield and the 

atmosphere at the club is really 

good so I’ll put the boots on again.

Slow start and limited success tests parenting skill 

FROM WHAT I can gather 

of this parenting game, there 

must be a whole lot time spent 

doubting your abilities. 

Whenever a friend’s child of an 

age with Vittoria does some new 

thing – talking, toileting, that sort 

of thing – I tend to think along 

the lines as to whether I should’ve 

been doing more to get bubs to 

match. Sounds dumb right? 

Getting her back into sleeping 

in her own bed and transitioning 

her to using a potty are my 

current goals. The thought that 

out there, people I know go 

through whole nights without 

being woken up by a toddler 

rolling onto their head and 

snoring in their ears spurs on the 

first goal. 

Hearing about the elaborate 

toilet training schemes of others 

drives the second. 

Because, lets be real, unless 

you’ve done it before, how on 

Earth do you train someone to 

use the toilet? 

The bed thing is pretty self 

explanatory, it just takes sufficient 

resolve and she’s been happy in 

her own bed (in our room still) 

for the last couple of nights. 

The potty thing? I’m not so 

sure. I tried slowly introducing 

a potty by getting her to sit on it 

before changing her clothes and it 

worked amazingly. Once. 

She successfully used it on

the first go, but the experience 

traumatised her somehow, it was 

actually an incredibly civilised 

affair with a victory treat. After 

four days I’ve only just bribed her 

enough to sit on it again. But only 

with pants her on. 

So, slowly, slowly on that one. 

I assume, like I said, I’ve never 

trained anyone to use a toilet. 

But like a little surprise to 

boost my parenting confidence, 

I discovered on Monday 

that Vittoria is already an 

environmentally and communityminded 

young lady. 

I’d taken her to Latimer Square 

to run about in the sun and grass, 

with a side order of first stickfighting

Moving veges to centre stage 

No longer the side dishes, the back-up dancers or the understudies, vegetables 

have earned their place front and centre on the plate as this pizza shows 

Broccoli margherita pizzas 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

1 x quantity broccoli dough (see 

following basic recipe) 

⅔ cup (50g) finely grated 

parmesan 

300g cherry tomatoes, torn in 

half and squeezed to remove the 

seeds 

¼ cup (4g) oregano leaves 

Extra virgin olive oil, for 

drizzling 

2 x 125g fresh mozzarella balls, 

torn 

Basil leaves, to serve 

Finely grated parmesan, plus 

extra to serve (optional) 

Directions 

Preheat oven to 200 deg C. 

Line 2cm x 30cm round oven 

trays with non-stick baking 

paper. 

Divide the dough in half and 

press on to each tray to make 

2cm x 28cm round pizza bases. 

Bake for 20min or until firm and 

slightly golden. 

Sprinkle the bases with 

parmesan and top with the 

tomatoes and oregano. 

Drizzle with a little oil. 

Return the pizzas to the oven 

and bake for a further 20min or 

until golden. 

Top warm pizzas with the 

mozzarella and sprinkle with 

basil and extra parmesan to 

serve. 

Cook’s notes: You can add 

your favourite toppings to this 

pizza. 

Just avoid anything that might 

make the broccoli base turn soft 

(such as tomato puree). 

It’s best to stick to fresh 

tomatoes with the seeds and 

some of the juice squeezed out. 

Try sprinkling over preroasted 

pumpkin, eggplant 

(aubergine) or zucchini 

(courgette). 

To have these pizza bases on 

standby for busy days, bake 

them for the first 20min, then 

cool, wrap and freeze for later 

use. 

Broccoli dough 

Ingredients 

600g broccoli florets (about two 

heads), roughly chopped (see 

cook’s notes) 

¾ cup (90g) almond meal 

(ground almonds) 

½ cup (25g) finely grated 

Parmesan 

3 eggs 

Sea salt and cracked black 

pepper 

Directions 

In small batches, place 

the broccoli in a food 

processor and process until 

finely chopped. Transfer to a 

large bowl. 

Add the almond meal, 

parmesan, eggs, salt and pepper 

to the broccoli and mix well to 

combine. 

Makes one quantity. 

Cook’s notes: It’s best if you 

don’t add too much of the 

broccoli stem to this dough. 

A floret with roughly 6-8cm of 

stem is great. 

Adding extra can make the 

dough watery. 

You can swap half, or all, of 

the broccoli for cauliflower if 

you prefer. 

Again, just don’t use too much 

of the stem.

Big Mercedes SUV tempts with its versatility

WHEN I’M picking up an 

evaluation car at a dealership, the 

first question I usually ask the 

sales team is: “What is selling in 

the company’s line-up?’’ 

In the case of Mercedes-Benz, 

I was told the GLE sport utility 

vehicle is the shaker and mover, 

which is the car in this evaluation, 

however, supply is problematic, 

such is its popularity waiting lists 

are looming. 

The GLE is all-new and lands 

here in two standard variants, 

effectively four and six-cylinder, 

both diesel. Interestingly, the 

3-litre six is an in-line unit, a 

departure from the vee-series 

engines that Mercedes-Benz has 

utilised for the last 10 years or so. 

I’ve covered that transition in 

recent Mercedes-Benz evaluations, 

and it has little relevance to 

the 300d this evaluation focuses 

on, its 2-litre engine is a traditional 

in-line four which sits longitudinally 

under the bonnet. 

The GLE is a large five or 

seven-seat, five-door wagon, it is 

almost 5m and weighs in at over 

2.2-tonne, consequently, there’s 

a lot of vehicle and it offers all of 

the credentials you would expect 

from something sizeable. It is a 

true luxury car and it comes with 

a high level of specification that 

justifies its $128,200 sticker price. 

It also gets a huge safety profile 

and that’s no surprise, you don’t 

buy Mercedes-Benz without 

investing in safety. There are way 

too many features to mention 

but to say any potential buyer 

won’t be disappointed, especially 

if you take into account the very 

extensive option lists. The test car 

was heavily optioned, adding over 

$20k to the price. 

One standard feature I do very 

much like is the wide digital display 

panel which extends across 

the facia, picture it as two i-Pads 

joined together, it’s a touch-type 

system, or you can use a mouselike 

device on the centre console 

to manipulate most of the settings 

within the vehicle.

a highway overtake in 4.6sec

When it came time to take the 

evaluation car out on the highway 

the weather was against me, it was 

wet and freezing. On my usual 

inland route snow was down to 

low levels. However, these were 

perfect conditions for the GLE, its 

driveline and safety systems put 

you at ease and, of course, had I 

ventured to high ground, it would 

be the ideal vehicle to tackle the 

ski-field access road. 

While the GLE is the car for 

the moment at Mercedes-Benz, 

it must be kept in mind that 

it is just one model in a very 

comprehensive SUV line-up 

from this high-profile German 

manufacturer. It’s good to have 

such choice.

Furthermore, container gardens 

look great anywhere – as 

hanging baskets on terraces and 

pergolas, half round containers 

spilling colour down a wall or 

fence, or simply sitting on paved 

areas, decks and steps. For best 

effect, plan your planter by 

height as well as colour. 

You can mix annuals with 

a central perennial until the 

perennial gets well established, 

and in the meantime, enjoy a 

miniature garden rather than a 

miniature plant surrounded by 

bare earth. 

You can dispense with the annuals 

when the perennial takes 

over. 

Container gardeners can 

pretty much give up weeding 

altogether. But you don’t need 

to do a bit of soil maintenance 

from time to time, because the 

plants aren’t in a self renewing 

environment – they’re relying 

on you to give them nutrition 

and moisture. 

Potted plants can dry out 

fast. Some will need watering 

up to twice a day in the hotter 

months, particularly those in 

terracotta and other porous 

pots.

Celebrating Selwyn is the theme of this 

year’s Ellesmere A & P Association Show 

being held on Saturday October 19 at the 

Ellesmere Show Grounds in Leeston. The 

149th Selwyn Spring Show is the largest one 

day show in New Zealand and encourages 

people to come together to celebrate Selwyn 

through their success in art, music, culture, 

business and agriculture. 

As one of the most truly diverse spring 

shows in New Zealand, the show attracts 

visitors, competitors, judges and organisers 

from throughout the South Island. 

This year the Association is delighted to 

host the final of the International Mounted 

Games. From 9.30am crowds will be treated 

to riders vaulting on and off ponies at high 

speeds, hitting targets at a gallop, along 

with high speed changeovers of equipment 

between team members representing New 

Zealand, Australia, South Africa and the 

USA. The race finals will take place at 1pm. 

Sheep entries have stayed strong this year 

with record entries in the Dorper section 

as the Selwyn Spring Show is their feature 

show of the year drawing exhibitors from 

all over the Canterbury region. Other well 

supported sections include the Corriedale, 

Southdown, Poll Dorset and black and 

coloured sheep. 

This year sees the return of both dairy 

and beef cattle. In the dairy section 

numbers of entries are down due to M 

Bovis but there will be a selection of 

Ayrshire dairy cows. Both the alpaca and 

dairy goat sections are displaying a large 

number of entries which is great for the 

future of the Selwyn Spring Show. 

Once again the sheep 

dog trials are one of the 

main attractions at the 

show. A highlight will be 

the return of the current 

New Zealand test 

captain Andy Clark and 

his dog Girl who have 

to defend the Wayleggo 

cup against Australia in 

late November. There 

will also be some new 

younger faces to keep 

the older competitors 

honest.

Plenty to entertain the 

whole family 

The show’s craft sites will be selling a 

range of goods from handmade crafts, 

plants, clothing, food, outdoor furniture - 

and fundraising by local organisations. 

The trade sites comprise of businesses 

selling their products or services with 

a wide variety from banks to real estate 

to fertiliser and power distribution 

companies. 

The machinery sites will display the 

latest in agricultural equipment and 

technology, as well as new car sales, 

irrigation companies, mowers and fertiliser 

spreading. Also on display is a large 

selection of vintage cars and agricultural 

machinery and the three magnificent 

Godley Heads Guns. The guns were 

6” breech loading Mark XXIV Coastal 

Defence guns on Mark V 45° mountings. 

The Produce Sheds have a large number 

of sections including cooking, homemade 

beverages, handcrafts, photography and 

flowers. For the school children there are 

sections for technology, art, flowers and 

cooking. 

Sport Canterbury is once again returning 

to host Year 6 teams from the Ellesmere 

district in the Cochranes Top Team 

Challenge. Teams of six will go head-tohead 

in a number of team based activities 

and test their skills in speed, ingenuity and 

craftiness. 

The hugely successful Farmlands/ 

Oakleys ‘Muster Chef ’ Competition also 

returns. This year’s challenge focuses 

on the preparation of food that fits with 

Celebrating Selwyn theme between 

contestants from six Selwyn schools. 

The annual Christchurch District 

Young Farmers Contest provides a relaxed 

and supportive environment whereby 

contestants aged between 18-31 years old 

compete against each other in a variety of 

modules. 

In keeping with the show theme of 

Celebrating Selwyn, Wearable Arts will be 

showcasing how spectacular ensembles 

can capture the essence of Selwyn. This 

year there will be two parades at 11am and 

1.30pm. 

Selwyn’s Got Talent returns for the 

second year as a fun local talent quest 

for the whole of Selwyn providing great 

entertainment and a wonderful way 

to showcase our local talent. Other 

entertainment includes the Ellesmere Big 

Band, highland dancing and live band 4 

Stroke.

For an awesome day out with something 

for everyone come along to the Selwyn 

Spring Show on Saturday October 19 at 

the Ellesmere Showgrounds. Admission 

is $15 for adults. Children aged up to 12 

years free and family passes are $40 for 

two adults and three children. Cash only 

is accepted at the gate, but there are Eftpos 

facilities available on the grounds. Parking 

is free. 

There is also a free bus that leaves 

the Selwyn District Council Carpark, 2 

Norman Kirk Drive, Rolleston at 9am and 

again at 10.30am. The return trip leaves 

Ellesmere Showgrounds, Leeston at 4pm.

Marketing your property – 

what does it mean? 

Marketing a property is more than presentation and advertising. 

Conceptually, marketing is identifying 

what prospective buyers are looking for 

then providing this. For example, larger 

homes and sections may appeal more 

to families. Young couples starting out, 

generally have tight budgets leading 

them to smaller properties, while older 

people may be looking to downsize. 

Brand new has a particular appeal 

however there will always be a market for 

established homes. Having a picture in 

your mind of the type of buyer will help 

in determining the features to emphasise. 

If repairs and maintenance need to be 

carried out before putting the property 

on the market, seek the advice of a real 

estate agent. They can advise on what 

tasks are worth completing and what 

might be unnecessary expense. 

Installing a new kitchen or changing 

the carpet may lift the house but will 

the expense be recouped in the sale 

price? On the other hand, modernising 

an outdated kitchen or bathroom could 

make a huge difference to the look of 

the place. Avoid going overboard unless 

the capital value of properties in the area 

justifies this. 

Real estate agents are in contact with 

prospective buyers so aware of what they 

are looking for. Draw on their expertise 

and advice to help make the most of the 

selling opportunity. 

Establishing a relevant and fair price 

for a property is important. Most 

agents calculate this based on the price 

properties in the area have sold for, and 

what a particular property has to offer. 

A unique or exceptional property may 

justify a higher price, though run-down 

properties can gain more than they 

appear to merit. This might be due to the 

area or other factors that suggest a good 

investment. 

When promoting a property, mix it up 

and be creative so your property stands 

out from the rest. TradeMe is a must; 

checked by most people looking to buy. 

Present the features the property offers as 

benefits to potential buyers. 

Erect a sign outside the property. 

People stop and look at photographs and 

this might spark sufficient interest for 

them to visit an open home. Spending 

a fortune on massive advertising 

campaigns in every media might seem a 

way to attract potential buyers but may 

be an unnecessary expense without the 

return. A better philosophy could be a 

little often. This will depend on the value 

of the property, your budget and how 

best to reach target buyers. 

Buyer perception is also significant. 

For example, properties that sit for a 

while can become stale. Resting the 

property by taking it off the market for 

a short time, then relisting perhaps in 

spring or when sales in the area appear 

to lift a little, can make a difference. 

However, if a property does not sell 

immediately there is no need for panic or 

dropping the price. It may simply be that 

the right buyer has not yet come along. If 

the mix is right your property will sell.

The triumph of light 

The people of Selwyn comprise a multi-culturally diverse community,

Diwali Festival will be one such occasion. 

A Hindu festival of lights, Diwali is organised 

by the Indian Social and Cultural Club (ISCC). 

This established group within Canterbury’s Indian 

community arrange Indian cultural events across 

the year. 

A free festival for all ages, Diwali blends 

traditional and contemporary Indian culture, 

presenting the flavours, sounds and sights of Indian 

culture through the story of a great Indian warrior 

named Prince Rama, his beautiful wife, Sita and 

the demonic King Ravana who had 20 arms and 10 

heads. 

Ravana kidnapped Sita who left a trail of her 

jewellery for Rama to follow. With the help of the 

monkey king Hanuman along with all the monkeys, 

bears and other animals, Sita was found and freed 

after a mighty battle between Rama and the evil 

Ravana. Diwali is a representation of the people 

lighting oil lamps to guide Rama and Sita back to 

their home with Diwali becoming an annual event 

to signify how light triumphs over dark and good 

triumphs over evil.
