Cycle the full length Quarryman’s Trail
THE FINAL section of the new
Quarryman’s Trail cycleway has
opened between Halswell and
the central city.
The 8.4km track, which runs
between Moorhouse Ave and
the Halswell, was constructed
in stages and took two years to
finish.
Work on the now completed
second and final 3.8km stage,
between Victors Rd and Te
Hāpua: Halswell Centre/
Halswell Domain, started last
year.
The first 4.6km section from
Moorhouse Ave to Victors Rd
opened in September last year.
The cycleway provides a route
to four schools in the Hoon Hay
area and also connects Pioneer
Recreation and Sport Centre to
the planned metro sports facility
to be built in the central city.
About 6136 cycle trips were
recorded on the Sparks Rd
section of the cycleway in
September – a 30 per cent
increase compared to the same
month last year.
At the central city end, 11,447
cycle trips were recorded last
month – a 12 per cent increase
from last year.
City council planning and
delivery transport manager
Lynette Ellis said the route’s
completion is a major milestone
which will benefit cyclists who
commute between Halswell
and the city, pedestrians and
motorists.
“This is a busy route with
many new housing areas and
RIDE ON:
The new
Quarryman’s
Trail,
connecting
Halswell and
the city, has
opened.
several schools. The changes
we’ve introduced as part of the
Quarryman’s Trail project will
give people transport choices,
improve safety for all road users,
including pedestrians, and make
the popular Te Hāpua: Halswell
Centre even more accessible.”
The project involved building
two new sets of traffic lights at
the Henderson and Sparks Rds
intersection and creating a new
pedestrian and cycle crossing
point from Sparks Rd into Milns
Reserve, a small native wetland
area.
Ms Ellis said city council
contractors and planners had
to make sure the cycle path
through Milns Reserve worked
in well with the pedestrian
walkways.
A reduced speed limit
of 60km/h has also been
introduced along parts of Sparks
and Hendersons Rds.
Quarryman’s Trail is part of
a network of cycle routes being
built by the city council to link
shopping centres, businesses,
schools, parks and popular
recreation destinations.
In the future, the trail will
connect to the Southern Lights
cycleway and the Nor’West Arc
route.
Michael J Brathwaite
responds to last
week’s article about
residents’ calls for the
city council to invest
more into Addington
I WOULD prefer it if the city
council left Addington alone.
Its idea of investing in a
suburb is narrowing streets,
closing or narrowing street
entrances and adding median
strips to prevent motorists from
using side streets to get away
from congested main roads. It
might also replace the old-style
gutters which can cope with the
rain with the shallow new kind
which cannot and cause flooding
whenever it rains hard.
It may add judder bars, replace
parking spaces with yellow lines
and cycle lanes no one uses, and
lower speed limits.
The city council’s plan
for Lincoln Rd is a classic
example.
One would think such
practices would go against its
climate change policy, as they
force motorists to make long
detours, wasting fossil fuels
and producing emissions to get
where we want to go.
I would rather the city council
just continues doing its worst
to the central city, as I never
venture there now.
Nazareth
Community of Care
When people think
about moving into a
retirement village or
need rest home care,
they sometimes worry
about a loss of freedom.
Ensuring residents
have choice and variety
are key priorities at
Nazareth Community
of Care.
Offering continuum
of care, Nazareth has
65 architecturally
designed two and three
bedroom, two bathroom
villas, and a spacious 80 bed rest home
and hospital if you need some extra
assistance.
Nazareth respects all faiths and
residents are welcome to spend some
quiet time in the on-site chapel or join
daily services at 10am.
Whether you’re in a villa or living in
our rest home/hospital, Nazareth staff
will work hard to meet your individual
needs – in a secure and friendly
environment.
Family and friends are always
welcome. The rest home has four large
lounges, two with SKY TV, and eight
smaller lounges, four of these with
a fridge and tea and coffee making
facilities.
A community within a community,
Nazareth House incorporates a market
style square, featuring amenities such as
a café, hairdresser, medical consulting
suite, gift shop, large function space,
chapel and comfortable cinema. There’s
also a newly opened community centre.
Life is as varied outside the village as
it is in, with Sydenham Bowling Club
next door, The Colombo shopping
centre is nearby and it’s a short drive
to the city. Villa residents can do their
own garden or have some help from our
team if they’d prefer. Raised communal
garden beds mean you can grow your
own vegetables and herbs.
Everything at Nazareth Community
of Care is guided by their values of love,
respect, patience, justice, hospitality and
compassion.
