Plan to upgrade playgrounds
• By Jess Gibson
TWO PLAYGROUNDS in the
Bay Harbour area are set to get
a refresh.
The city council is seeking
feedback on proposals for the
Radley playground in Woolston
and King Park playground in Mt
Pleasant until November 6.
Both playgrounds are reaching
the end of their life span and
will receive new equipment for a
range of ages and abilities.
Radley playground was built at
Radley Park on Woolston Cres in
the mid-1980s.
Before that, the area was
part of Troutdale Farm, where
Andrew Mensal Johnson bred
the first brown trout in New
Zealand.
The farm was a popular picnic
area until it closed in the early
1930s and a number of the
original trees remain in the park
today.
There is a plaque along the
PRIZE-WINNING “Kelliher”
paintings will be showcased in
Akaroa.
Sir Henry Kelliher was a longstanding
patron of the arts and
set up the Kelliher Art Award
in 1956.
The objective of the
competition, which lasted until
1977, was to encourage realistic
portrayals of New Zealand
landscapes and the way of life
of its people for the entire world
to see.
The Kelliher Art Exhibition
will be held at the Powerhouse
Gallery from Saturday to
November 24.
The paintings to be displayed
in Akaroa are either Kelliher
competition prize-winners
or paintings acquired by the
Kelliher Art Trust.
It will be the second time
in 63 years a selection of the
paintings have been shown in
banks of the Heathcote River
which commemorates Mr
Johnson.
The city council has proposed
new equipment which would be
suitable for both the park setting
and the community, including
swings, a slide, a carousel, a seesaw
and a fish-rocker.
King Park playground,
which is off Quarry Rd and
Rangatira Tce, dates back to the
1930s.
The proposed new equipment
includes swings, a slide, a “space
shuttle” with rope climbing, and
a choice between a dinosaur
rocker or a kiwi rocker.
Once the consultation
period has closed for both
playgrounds, the project
team will analyse feedback
and produce a report with
a recommendation to the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board.
A decision from the board
is expected sometime in April
the South Island.
Peter McIntyre, Cedric
Savage, David Barker, Austen
Deans, Colin Wheeler, Robert
McDowell and Richard
McWhannell are among the
artists to be exhibited are.
and if the plans are approved,
construction of the playgrounds
is likely to start in May or June.
Feedback sought on
improvement plan
for busy Akaroa road
• By Jess Gibson
A CROSSING build-out has
been proposed for a busy road in
Akaroa.
The city council has asked for
feedback on the planned changes
to Beach Rd next to Stanley Park.
The proposal includes a
crossing point, with a kerb buildout,
to align with the park steps.
The changes will create a safer
crossing point for pedestrians,
make the park entrance more
visible and prevent cars and
buses from parking in front of it.
Consultation opened on
Thursday and will close
on November 6, and a
recommendation will go to the
Banks Peninsula Community
Board.
If the community board
approves the recommendation,
construction is likely to start
halfway through next year.
Meanwhile, work will begin to
replace the old stone steps where
Stanley Park meets Beach Rd at
the end of the month.
Approval was granted to
replace the steps several years
ago.
The steps will be realigned for
better access and provide room
for the possible future instalment
of the bell tower.
Locally-sourced stone will be
incorporated into the design and
a handrail will also be included
on one side of the steps.
