Welcome to the Monash Health Annual Report 2018-19
Our progress over the past year shines
through the many achievements
highlighted in this report.
In our 165 th year, the care we provide to
our community continues to grow with
4.1 million episodes of patient care, an
increase of nine per cent over last year.
A highlight was the launch of our Strategic
Plan 2019-2023, which provides our
focus for the next five years, setting out
our aspirations for the future and what we
will do to meet the needs of the local and
broader Victorian community.
Our strategic intent we are relentless
in our pursuit of excellence defines our
approach as a leading teaching and
research health service of international
standing. After much consultation, we
identified six guiding principles:

We work with humility, respect,
kindness and compassion in high

We integrate teaching, research and

community
Our health professionals made
improvements to clinical practice across
the world, conducting world-class clinical
and translational research, with 531 new
research projects and 1,417 patient-focused
research projects currently underway.
We have continued to deliver our
Transforming Care Program of work,
introducing initiatives across the
organisation, enabling us to provide the
best possible care and experience for our
consumers.
A stand-out for this portfolio has been our
work towards the introduction of our largest
technology-based transformation, the
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Program,
implemented in August 2019.
In line with our guiding principles,
we launched an Equity and Inclusion
Strategy. The Strategy ensures we are
a place of opportunity and inclusion for
our employees. We worked with our
community, setting strategies and key
actions to improve and enhance the care
we provide.
The $135 million expansion of Casey
Hospital continued, and we look forward
to the phased opening of clinical spaces
next year. Australia’s first Victorian Heart
Hospital and upgrades to Monash Medical
Centre’s Emergency Department also
progressed well.
In the following pages, you will find
highlights that reflect our large and
diverse health service and demonstrate
our principles, values and commitment to
excellence.
Acknowledgements
It is a privilege and honour for both of us
to lead this organisation, full of dedicated
individuals who share a passion for
achieving excellence.
We extend thanks to our Board Members
and Executive team for their leadership.
To all Monash Health employees, thank
you for your work and the wonderful
contribution you make every day to
the health of our consumers. To our
community, we thank you for your
feedback, which provides us with rich
insights into how we can improve and
continue to grow.
In addition, we recognise and honour
the incredible strength our 377 official
volunteers bring to Monash Health; along
with more than 100 volunteers who visit
our hospitals from organisations such
as the Starlight Children’s Foundation,
Ronald McDonald House and Clown
Doctors.
We acknowledge and thank the Victorian
Government, Department of Health and
Human Services (DHHS) and Federal
Government for supporting us to serve
our diverse and evolving community.
