▪▪
Our warehouse and logistics team consider opportunities to
reduce our cardboard footprint by transferring cartons directly
to the relevant wards upon delivery.
Waste management
Encourage the reduction, re-use and recycling of resources, and
increase diversion of resources from landfill.
Achievements:
▪▪
We are continually improving our waste segregation activities
via access to multiple waste streams and tailored education.
▪▪
Operating Theatres at Dandenong Hospital have tailormade
some of their surgical packs, avoiding the wastage of
unnecessary items.
▪▪
Monash Health has donated hundreds of unused curtains to a
wildlife organisation who will re-purpose them.
▪▪
A supplier take-back partnership has been set up with some
of our food suppliers, where they take back their packaging
and re-use it.
▪▪
We have invested in the EMR where we will be phasing out
our inpatient paper medical records and replacing them with
an electronic record where we create, store and retrieve
patient information.
▪▪
The Clayton Pharmacy Department was successful in
securing a grant from the Victorian Health and Human
Services Building Authority. This grant will be used in an
ambitious project aimed at eliminating plastic bag use
throughout the pharmaceutical journey and will remove
approximately 326,500 plastic bags from circulation at
Clayton.
▪▪
Kingston Centre Food Services Department are trialling an
innovative food waste management system that will divert
approximately more than 25 tonnes of food waste from landfill
per annum.
▪▪
Through our Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) recycling stream, we
have diverted almost two tonnes of PVC from landfill this
financial year.
▪▪
Through our Electronic Waste Recycling Program, we have
diverted over five tonnes of electronics from landfill this
financial year.
▪▪
Through our Metal Instruments Recycling Program, we have
diverted over three tonnes of single-use metal instruments
from landfill this financial year.
Sustainable travel and active transport
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Monash Health’s fleet
car service, and encourage the use of car-pooling and active
transport.
Achievements:
▪▪
We have a Bicycle Users Group, and bike facilities across
our campuses promoting and enabling the use of active bike
transport.
▪▪
We are a part of Hospital Car Share, an organisation enabling
workers to carpool to and from work.
▪▪
Our fleet car service operations are purchasing smaller, more
fuel-efficient vehicles now the default for Monash Health and
we are exploring the purchasing of hybrid vehicles where
possible.
Sustainable buildings
Improve environmental standards for new and retrofit building
projects.
Achievement:
▪▪
Monash Health plans to implement mandatory ecologically
sustainable design principles and energy efficiency
initiatives in new builds and major retrofits/refurbishments
in accordance with the relevant sections of the National
Construction Code.
Energy efficiency and emissions
Support the Victorian Government’s climate change framework
for emissions reduction (net zero greenhouse gas emissions by
2050 and renewable energy generation targets of 25% by 2020
and 40% by 2025).
Achievements:
▪▪
Monash Health engaged an energy management consultant
to conduct a level 2 energy audit for Monash Medical
Centre and Dandenong Hospital. We are in the process
of implementing several selected recommendations from
this audit report, which will support our goal of emissions
reduction and improve our energy efficiency.
▪▪
We have implemented a building analytics program for
Monash Children’s Hospital to ensure early detection of any
Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning faults, enabling the
most efficient running of the building.
▪▪
Set point temperatures have been readjusted to 21°C for
heating and 24°C for cooling where possible, and we have
implemented control strategies to automatically reset set
points, reducing the amount of energy used.
▪▪
We are replacing existing T5 fluorescent fittings to LED fittings
where practicable, reducing energy usage and emissions.
▪▪
We plan to increase data storage of the Building Management
System so as to improve the ability to interrogate BMS
information.
▪▪
We will investigate issues in air handling units associated with
wasted reheating and unusually high outside air temperatures
identified as part of spot checks of the BMS, ensuring we
continue to operate at optimal efficiency.
▪▪
We are identifying spaces where 24/7 air conditioning is not
required and adjusting time clocks to correspond with actual
working hours, ensuring energy efficiency and reducing
emissions.
Monash Health is committed to reducing our ecological footprint with
sustainability being one of our strategic principles.
