Anna Fisher, who is also a chemist and a specialist in emergency medicine, will take part in a special panel discussion A Future for Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) on Wednesday. In 1983, just weeks before having her first daughter, Dr Fisher secured a spot in the Discovery shuttle crew as a mission specialist. She lifted off in 1984 to become the first mother in space. Dr Fisher was also chief of the space station branch during the building of the International Anna Fisher Space Station and worked on the Orion capsule under development for NASA’s Space Launch System. She also served as the ISS capsule communicator at the Mission Control Centre. Her visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. Dr Fisher will join New Zealand scientists Rose Swears, Victoria Metcalf, Sarah Kessans and leading STEM educator Miranda Satterthwaite to discuss pathways for women in science and aeronautics, the development of young talent and leadership. PHOTO: ODT • By Brent Melville A HEAT pump company has come under fire for allegedly misrepresenting its services to elderly customers. The Commerce Commission is taking action against Christchurch-based Ocean Contracting, also trading as Ocean Heat- Master, which it says misrepresented its services to the public. The company is facing 10 charges under the Fair Trading Act for “representations made during servicing of heat pumps.” The charges relate to complaints from Otago and Southland customers, who received cold calls from Ocean Contracting in 2016 or 2017, with subsequent visits to service their heat pumps. The majority of complainants were pensioners. The commission alleges Ocean Contracting misled consumers by telling them their heat pumps were leaking refrigerant gas and that it would cost between $180 and $400 to “top up” the refrigerant gas. “None of the complainants’ heat pumps required a refrigerant top-up. The evidence gathered by the commission suggests that Ocean Contracting did not actually carry out the gas top-ups which it held out as necessary,” the commission said. One former customer, Madeline Clark, of Dunedin, complained about Ocean Contracting services in 2017 after the two service technicians advised her the pump had a gas leak, which would cost an additional $350 to replace. She agreed and the work took “around 10 minutes” she said. Davies Heat & Cool manager Peter Chettleburgh said the heat pump would simply stop working if it had a refrigerant gas leak. “It would also have taken much longer than 10min to clean and fix it – we’d estimate around two to three hours work, including the gas, which should cost around $250 plus GST for a full replacement.” Ocean HeatMaster subsequently waived Ms Clark’s $350 fee. Ocean Contracting owner and manager Mithun Naidu did not to return calls. A research fellow at Canterbury University, Dr Kessans has initiated several projects in the foundation of a local space biotechnology industry, while Ms Satterthwaite has trained in STEM education at several NASA centres, and taught aerodynamics. A Future for Women in STEM panel discussion will be held in the TSB Space at Turanga on Wednesday, 5.30-7pm.
