Plenty of tight contests in title fights<br />

The recent <strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> Table Tennis<br />

championshipsproved<br />

competitive, with many<br />

close matches and players<br />

risingtothe occasion to<br />

win their respective titles.<br />

New and existing<br />

players, both juniors and<br />

seniors, from Clarkville,<br />

Oxford, Rangiora and<br />

Kaiapoi, showed their<br />

strengths and proved they<br />

are not to be taken lightly.<br />

There was an upset in<br />

the open men’s singles<br />

event,with Colin Viegas, of<br />

Rangiora,beating last<br />

year’swinner Michael<br />

Sumner, of Clarkville, in a<br />

nail­biting finish.<br />

For the sixth consecutive<br />

year Sumner and teammate<br />

MichaelBonner,of<br />

Clarkville, showed their<br />

strength to win the men’s<br />

open doubles title.<br />

Rangiora team­mates<br />

Viegasand RossTabb<br />

foughthard, but the<br />

Clarkvilleduo were too<br />

strong.<br />

Georgina Walker, of<br />

Oxford, retained the open<br />

women’s singles title for<br />

the 9th consecutive year.<br />

Georgina then teamed<br />

upwithGlenn Ross and put<br />

on an excellent<br />

performancetowin the<br />

open mixeddoubles title,<br />

beating Rangiora duo Ross<br />

Tabb and MikaKawasaki.<br />

The under­18 junior<br />

singles title was won by<br />

newcomer Kawasaki, who<br />

showed her strength in<br />

winning four of the five<br />

junior events.She played<br />

outstandingly to get to the<br />

finals of all the categories<br />

she entered,proving she<br />

can compete with the<br />

senior players.<br />

Josh Lubbers, of<br />

Rangiora, won theunder­<br />

18 boys’singles forthe first<br />

year.Hethen joined with<br />

clubmate Amelia Todd to<br />

win the under­18 junior<br />

doubles title.<br />
