Golden glow across Main Divide<br />

Main Divide wines, made at<br />

the Pegasus Bay winery<br />

operated by the Donaldson<br />

family,won three gold<br />

medals at the New World<br />

Wine Awards.<br />

The goldswent to Main<br />

Divide’s <strong>2019</strong> sauvignon<br />

blanc, 2015 riesling, and 2017<br />

merlot cabernet.<br />

Main Divide’s 2017 merlot<br />

cabernet was also placed in<br />

the top 50 wines, selected<br />

from the gold medal winners.<br />

They wereproducedbythe<br />

team at PegasusBay under<br />

the direction of Matt<br />

Donaldson.<br />

Tastingnotessaid the<br />

merlot blend providedripe<br />

fruit and drinkability,while<br />

the cabernet sauvignon gave<br />

body, backbone and<br />

structure.<br />

‘‘The result is arich wine<br />

with ripe flavours of red<br />

berries, plums and<br />

blueberry, the fruitissweet<br />

and the flavourfull with a<br />

long soft finish. Pair this with<br />

lamb shoulder chops slow<br />

cooked withthymeand<br />

onions.’’<br />

tasted up to 19 timesby11<br />

different judges before being<br />

awardedthis merit, and<br />

champion wines will have<br />

been tasted up to 36 times.<br />

All entries are tasted blind,<br />

meaningjudges see the wine<br />

only in the glass,never in a<br />

bottle.<br />

Well over athousand wines<br />

entered the <strong>2019</strong> New World<br />

Wine Awards. Entrieswere<br />

judged by 17 independent<br />

experts over three days to<br />

awardgold,silverand<br />

bronze medals, as well as<br />

championtrophies and the<br />

top 50 rankings.<br />

The Donaldson familyhas<br />

been involved in wine since<br />

the early 1970s and were<br />

pioneersofthe <strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong>region.<br />

TheirPegasus Bay Winery<br />

and Vineyard is atrue family<br />

affair.<br />

Ivan Donaldson, who had a<br />

long career as an associate<br />

professor and consultant<br />

neurologist,aswell as being<br />

awine writer and wine<br />

judge, oversees viticulture<br />

and wine styles.<br />

He beganthe vineyard<br />

while holdingdown his day<br />

job.<br />

His wife, Christine,<br />

established the gardensat<br />

Pegasus Bay and maintains<br />

the extensive grounds.<br />

Their eldest son, Ed, takes<br />

care of the marketing; Matt is<br />

the winemaker;his younger<br />

brother,Paul, is the general<br />

manager;his other brother,<br />

Mike, is their localsales<br />

manager;and Ed’s wife,<br />

Belinda,runs the restaurant.<br />

They have two brands in<br />

operation: PegasusBay,<br />

which includes only fruit<br />

grown on their estate; while<br />

The top 50 gold­medalwinning<br />

wines are available<br />

in all liquor­selling New<br />

World stores nationwide<br />

until November 10, sellingat<br />

$25 and below. However, not<br />

all medal­winning wines are<br />

available at New World as<br />

they do not have to be<br />

stocked by the supermarket<br />

chain to enter the awards.<br />
