Fonterra lifts milk price forecast
Dairyfarmers will be buoyedbyFonterra’s
improvedmilk price.
The dairy cooperative has released its
2019/20 forecast farmgate milk price, with
the range up 30 cents,tobetween $6.55 and
$7.55per kilogramofmilk solids.
The advance rate Fonterra pays its
farmer/owners will be set off the midpoint
of $7.05 per kgMS.
Fonterrachairman John Monaghan says
the cooperative had been achievinggood
prices for its milk so far thisseason.
‘‘Demand for whole milk powderhas
been firm, and for the full seasonwe’re
expecting it to be abovelast year.
‘‘Global whole milk powder production
is down year to date and is expected to
continuetodecrease for the remainder of
2019.
‘‘We arealso continuing to sell our skim
Chiefexecutive Miles Hurrell says there
are positive signals for the milk price.
‘‘It is still very earlyinthe season and a
lot canchange.
‘‘There are anumber of factors we are
keeping aclose eye on, which is why we’ve
retained awide forecast milkprice range.
Thesefactors include global tradetensions
and political instability in someofour key
salesregions.
‘‘And, as is always the case, we cannot
predict the weather and clearly weather
conditions play abig role in global supply.’’
Mr Hurrell saysthe strong demandfor
Fonterra’s milk and the pricesthat are
beingachieved, relative to other milkproducing
regions, demonstratethe
rationale of Fonterra’s new strategyto
prioritise New Zealand milk.
