Cafe expands next door<br />

Desire Cafe haveexpandedtheir<br />
business, takingover the former<br />
florist shop next door.<br />
When florist Fi Sidey decided to<br />
move her business from Conway<br />
Lane to the former Sparks<br />
Menswear shopinRangiora’s High<br />
St, the Fools of Desire owners<br />
ElisaLeachand KarlHorwarth<br />
decided to obtainthe extra space<br />
next door.<br />
The wall inside the little seating<br />
nook in the cafewas removed to<br />
accessthe new space.<br />
‘‘Fools of Desirehas been<br />
growing overour almost four years,<br />
and we are often full to capacity,so<br />
when the opportunity to have a<br />
littlemore space came up, we<br />
decided to grab it,’’Karl said.<br />
‘‘It is acompetitive hospitality<br />
marketinRangiora so to survive<br />
you mustconstantly be improving<br />
and innovating.’’ The new space,<br />
which openedfor cafe customers<br />
on Wednesdaylast week, is also<br />
available for functions, meetings<br />
and events during the day.<br />
‘‘Withaprojectorand sound<br />
systeminstalled we can handle<br />
anything, and it is probably the<br />
biggest screeninRangiora for<br />
meetings at over 3m wide.’’<br />

Skills recognised<br />

recognised for her<br />
leadershipskills.<br />
AnnaliseGraham,aged 17,<br />
aYear 12 student at<br />
KaikouraHigh School,<br />
received theoverall<br />
excellence award at the<br />
weeklong Blue Lightlife<br />
skills camp run by the New<br />
Zealand policeforceat<br />
Burnham MilitaryCamp<br />
recently.<br />
‘‘It was prettycool.Iwasn’t<br />
expecting it,’’she said.<br />
‘‘It was awesome. Ireally<br />
enjoyed justbeing at the<br />
camp.Itwas very strict, butit<br />
was an amazing<br />
atmosphere.’’<br />
The opportunitytoattend<br />
the camp arose after going<br />
through the Cactusfitness<br />
and leadershipprogramme<br />
at schooland gaining one of<br />
two scholarships.<br />
She is now considering a<br />
career in the policeforce.<br />
‘‘I wouldn’t have really<br />
looked at it before, but being<br />
there on the camp and seeing<br />
whatitwas like has certainly<br />
opened my eyes.’’<br />
She says her school<br />
provides plentyof<br />
leadership experiencesand,<br />
in the aftermath of the2016<br />
earthquake, there havebeen<br />
manyopportunities for<br />
young peopletoget involved.<br />
‘‘It’s such acool wee<br />
community and the<br />
earthquakehas definitely<br />
boostedopportunities for<br />
young people. It’s pretty cool<br />
to see the community open<br />
up and createopportunities<br />
for us to help out.’’<br />
