New deputy mayor humbled<br />

Neville Atkinsonisthrilled to be<br />

Waimakariri’s new deputy<br />

mayor.The long­serving Kaiapoi<br />

councillor was unanimously<br />

elected to be new mayorDan<br />

Gordon’s deputyatFriday’s<br />

inaugural meetingofthe 11thterm<br />

Waimakariri District<br />

Council.<br />

‘‘I’m just humbled and thrilled<br />

to be in this seat and Iintend to<br />

perform the duties as diligently<br />

as Ihave in the last 18 years and<br />

to support Dan as best Ican,’’ Cr<br />

Atkinson said.<br />

‘‘I’m reallyexcited to be here<br />

and to be part of the new council.<br />

The last coupleorthree days<br />

getting to know the other<br />

councillors have been good. We<br />

have areallygood council.’’<br />

Cr Atkinson has servedfive<br />

terms on the council and one<br />

term as aKaiapoi Community<br />

Board member before that.<br />

His sentiments were echoed by<br />

chief executive JimPalmer,who<br />

presided over the meeting until<br />

he witnessed Mr Gordon<br />

presenting andthensigningthe<br />

mayoral declaration.<br />

‘‘Theyhave come together<br />

reallywell over the last two<br />

weeks and I’m sure we are going<br />

to haveafantastic three years.’’<br />

The meeting openedwith Ngai<br />

Tuahuriri and councilkaumatua<br />

Aroha Reritii­Crofts calling the<br />

councillors into the chambers<br />

and then blessing the new<br />

council term.<br />

Councillorsalso unanimously<br />

approved Mr Gordon’s<br />

recommendations for portfolio<br />

holders and council committee<br />

appointments. Further<br />

appointmentswill be made at the<br />

first regular councilmeeting on<br />

November 5.<br />

of Cr Fletcher was backed<br />

unanimously by the full<br />

council.<br />

confirmation thatthe first<br />

‘‘business as usual’’council<br />

meetingwill be held today.<br />

Mr Fletcher saidhewas<br />

humbled by thehonour of<br />

being electeddeputy mayor.<br />
