Mountain
rescue
•From page 1
The woman was then
winched off the mountain.
She had non-life-threatening
injuries, including multiple
limb fractures, friction burns,
a suspected spinal injury and
multiple lacerations to her body,
Garden City Helicopters general
manager Simon Duncan said.
Prior to the rescue, two other
experienced climbers had
abseiled down into the valley
to find the fallen climber and
disaster nearly struck again.
“Well, you don’t normally
climb in that valley, because it
is very difficult to get out. They
were quite experienced climbers,
one of them was a Red Cross
medic in Lebanon,” Senior
Constable McCormack said.
“They were about 100m away.
But the helicopter got to her first,
which was great.”
The climbers then heard a
rumble. We were still up on
the ridge and then there was
an avalanche that came down,
within metres of the two guys. I
was watching it from up in the
valley. I heard the rumble and
they started running.
“They ran onto the rocks and
the avalanche passed within
metres of them. We were lucky
they didn’t get smoked into that,”
he said.
Worker critical after
port explosion
An explosion has left a worker
critically injured in Lyttelton.
A police spokeswoman said
emergency services were
called to a workplace accident
on Cashin Quay, near the
weighbridge, about 3.30pm on
Wednesday. She said there were
reports of an explosion and a
person appeared to have burn
injuries. Worksafe had been
Governors Bay jetty sold for $1
• By Jess Gibson
THE GOVERNORS Bay Jetty
sold for $1 yesterday.
The historic, 300m wooden
structure has been closed since
2011 after a post-earthquake
inspection found it to be unsafe.
The Governors Bay Jetty
Restoration Trust bought it from
the city council to enact an
agreement and take ownership of
the jetty so it can start its repair
project.
Deputy Mayor and city councillor
Andrew Turner was at the
jetty yesterday to officiate the sale
during a ceremony held at 11am.
Due to the deteriorated state of
the piles, the sub-structure needs
replacing.
The trust will raise the deck
height by 1m to allow for
sea-level rise caused by climate
change.
Over the years, money to
rebuild the jetty has been raised
by the community in many
ways – including music festivals,
calendar sales, art sales and
Christmas gift packs.
DONE DEAL: Deputy Mayor
and councillor Andrew
Turner is handed a $1 coin
by Governors Bay Jetty
Restoration Trust chairman
Simon Mortlock to officiate
the sale of the jetty.
advised, she said. A St John alert
said two ambulance crews had
attended the incident and had
taken one critically injured
person to Christchurch Hospital.
Another person had been treated
at the scene.
Jail sentence after
violent incident
Leonie Sherie Cook, 27, was
sentenced in the High Court
on Wednesday, 11 months
after she dropped 25-year-old
Shayne George Heappey at
Christchurch Hospital with 14
stab wounds from a gang attack
by members of the Nomads.
The mother had arrived late and
out of breath for the sentencing
which took place before Justice
Rachel Dunningham. Justice
Dunningham jailed her for two
years and three months for her
role in the violent incident, and
added another two years for
her methamphetamine dealing.
Cook had admitted both
charges.
