Long wait for
tram shelter

RESIDENTS ARE frustrated they
will have to wait until the end of
December to use the Moncks Bay
tram shelter.
City council transport
operations manager Steffan
Thomas said in April the 85-yearold
shelter on Main Rd was likely
to be repaired and re-opened
before the end of September.
However, he now says further
design work on the maintenance
and strengthening of the shelter
is required, which
will then need to
be signed off by the
city council heritage
team.
In January, the
Redcliffs Residents
Christine
Toner
Association was critical
of the progress
made on the shelter
after the city council closed it the
month before due to earthquake
vulnerability.
Now association chairwoman
Christine Toner says she is “very
disappointed” city council staff
did not keep their word to have it
finished by September. She said
the association was not told about
the delay.
“We would like it to be given
priority. It’s a precious piece of
equipment and one of the few
historic treasures we have left on
the waterfront,” Ms Toner said.

TEENAGER Maddie Collins is
recovering after signs of kidney
rejection left her in Starship
Hospital for a week.
The Star has been following
the 15-year-old’s battle with
the kidney disease, nephrotic
syndrome, since 2014.
She underwent her second
kidney transplant in January last
year.
A recent blood
test showed
Maddie’s
creatinine levels
had spiked to 330.
Typically, 60-80
is normal and
Maddie’s normal
is about 170.

Collins said the
raised levels started a whirlwind
of scans, needles and tests
which landed them in Starship
Hospital, Auckland.
“We got rushed into
Christchurch Hospital with some
IV fluids hoping that would
resolve it but it didn’t,” Mrs
Manson-Collins said.
“We were then flown to Starship
where she had a kidney biopsy that
showed she had another bout of
rejection.”
Maddie then started a course
of high dose steroids, and

has since responded to the
treatment. She flew back to
Christchurch with her mother
last week.
Mrs Manson-Collins said it
will be another week before they
know if any permanent damage
has been done to Maddie’s
kidney.
“It just shows us how vulnerable
and fragile her health is. When
she’s well, then she’s well, but when
she’s sick, she is really sick.
“As of right now, she is doing
okay. She’s pretty exhausted
from the side effects of such a
high dose steroids.”
In spite of the health scare,
Maddie competed in the
Canterbury Dressage Spring
Series equestrian competition
at McLeans Island on Sunday,
winning the intro ponies
division.
“As a mum, it’s really
delightful to watch her compete
because riding is Maddie’s
lifeline. I know that she’s ready
to tackle anything and can keep
going when she is determined to
ride,” she said.
Maddie was donated a kidney
six years ago by her father Adam
but her body rejected it.
She then received what was
termed a ‘miracle’ second kidney
transplant in January last year
after being told there was only a
two per cent chance of finding a
match in New Zealand.
They were planning a trip to
The John Hopkins Hospital in
Baltimore, United States, to find
one when they were notified an
organ had been found.
However, Maddie ended up
at Starship Hospital in July this
year with signs her new kidney
was failing. She was struggling
with its declining function and
high blood pressure.
