Since then de Rose has been obsessed, thinking of little else outside of skating. “I just had a thing for it ever since I started and was constantly wanting to go back, he said. “At the start it was more casual until I was about eight then I started competing in Australia and that made me want to progress and be competitive. “It’s so tense and so strategic and you’ve just got to give it everything you’ve got, I love it.” De Rose has been going from ‘I was super stoked that all my training over the years has paid off’ – Ethan de Rose strength to strength within the sport, setting New Zealand agegroup records and placing 16 th at this year’s junior world champs where he competed against older athletes. Ms Peden said she would like members and her own pay as chairwoman to be in “at least the same ball park” as the inner-city community boards. The current pay checks may change soon, as the Fran Wilde newly-elected city council is set to vote on the allocation of a $1,843,200 governance pool before the end of the year. The city councillors can decide to allocate funds from the pool towards the remuneration of community board members. However, Ms Peden said she is not holding her breath. “It’s not a given. We understand that it’s there for their delegations and increased role capacities.” She believes the community board has a good case to put forward to the Remuneration Authority. Its representatives look after two harbours and the board covers the largest geographical area out of seven community boards. There is still one vacant seat on the community board after it failed to attract enough candidates in the October local body elections. Low pay has also been cited as one of the reasons five former board members chose to retire after the last term. “We do feel it’s because of the remuneration doesn’t match the workload. Not many people have the time or capacity to put themselves forward.” Ms Peden said having better remuneration would encourage better democracy around the table. AREA: The Banks Peninsula Community Board looks after two harbours and covers the largest geographical area out of the city’s seven community boards. “Working for $6 an hour is painful, but we do it for the love.” Remuneration Authority chairwoman Fran Wilde said it is “very happy to receive submissions” put forward by a community board. The next annual review, using the current model of local government remuneration, is due on July 1. “The authority takes into account all information it receives,” Dame Wilde said. A by-election will be held early next year to fill the vacant community board seat, which represents the Mt Herbert Subdivision. Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre manager Ruth Targus has started working on ideas put forward at a community meeting on the potential effects of a new cruise berth, which is set to open in October. Lyttelton Port Company’s berth will allow cruise ships which cater to more than 5000 passengers and 2000 staff to dock. At the meeting in August, residents and businesses raised concerns over the possibility tourists will not stay in the port town and will instead go directly into the central city. There has now been confirmation of a shuttle bus which will bring cruise ship passengers to the information centre on Oxford St, as well as coaches to the city, so that World Famous in neW Zealand Try our famous dessert presented to the “My Restaurant Rules” judges Kiwi reality show. She has sent out a notice to Lyttelton businesses asking whether they would be interested in running events like these to build the towns “brand” as more of a destination. “The harbour is amazing. We want to make sure it’s not just a place to pass through.” She said there will be support for any businesses planning to start-up and offer experiences from Lyttelton.
