ANALYSIS OF THE INCLUSION AND PARTICIPATION OF YOUTH MPS<br />
DURING THE 11TH AND 12TH PARLIAMENTS<br />
Overview<br />
Parliament is vested with three key m<strong>and</strong>ates, namely representation, legislation <strong>and</strong> oversight.<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> Parliament discharge <strong>the</strong>se by way <strong>of</strong> several tools, among <strong>the</strong>m Bills, Motions, Questions/<br />
Statements <strong>and</strong> Petitions, as well as <strong>in</strong>quiries or <strong>in</strong>vestigations by House Committees. This Chapter<br />
highlights some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contributions <strong>of</strong> Youth MPs dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> term <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>11th</strong> Parliament <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />
two years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>12th</strong> Parliament.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>11th</strong> Parliament, <strong>the</strong>re were forty-one MPs aged 35 years <strong>and</strong> below. Of <strong>the</strong>se, thirty-one were<br />
elected while ten were nom<strong>in</strong>ated; thirty-one were Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Assembly while ten were<br />
Senators; <strong>and</strong>, twenty-eight were men while thirteen were women. ODM contributed <strong>the</strong> highest number<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>youth</strong> MPs, at sixteen, followed by TNA <strong>and</strong> URP with n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>youth</strong> MPs each. WDM had two MPs, UDF, NFK<br />
<strong>and</strong> CCU one each, <strong>and</strong> two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>youth</strong> MPs were Independent.<br />
