Blackheath & Thornburgh
College
Celebrating 100 Years in 2019
LOCATED in the heart of Charters Towers,
North Queensland with historic Thornburgh
House sitting pride of place on the campus,
Blackheath and Thornburgh College (BTC) is a
co-educational school that provides quality
education from Prep-Prep to Year 12. BTC
provides an environment that is nurturing,
challenging, technologically rich, offers a
diverse curriculum and co-curricular program
and supports the individual needs of boarding
and day students. The college’s aim is to
enable all students to become resilient, caring
and responsible global citizens. At BTC we
continue to build on the proud traditions of the
past while acknowledging the ever-changing
landscape in regional and rural Australia.
At the start of 2019, BTC completed the
upgrade of the Science block. We now have a
state of the art facility fitted with promethium
screens and modern scientific equipment. The
facility will support our motivation to extend our
focus on STEM (Science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics).
choose from. A proud moment for us was the
celebration of our centenary in 2019. As a
College, we hosted many wonderful events
which were enjoyed by current and past
students, current and past staff and the local
community. The support received during the
Centenary year is a testament to the longevity
and accomplishments of the school, its staff
and alumni.
In the same way our benefactors contribute and
invest in our College’s future, we expect our
students to contribute and invest in their own
educational journeys. There is an expectation
that students will contribute to the co-curricular
life of the College. The more a student puts in,
the more they get out of their time at BTC. We
want our students to experience fulfillment and
gratitude towards hard work.
At BTC we provide a home away from home
for our boarders. Life at BTC is rich with social
activities, career opportunities and a
family-inspired learning culture where respect
and courteousness are fundamentally what we
teach and expect every day. Our students are
enriched with many co-curricular programs to
