Eastlife Winter 2019

It might be cold, damp and dark, but there’s still plenty to do across the region. With impressive museums, galleries, cosy pubs, theatres in an abundance and of course country walks, the East of England is very much geared up to make the most of winter.

A Weekend

in the City

PETERBOROUGH

Written by Liz Mattock

Peterborough has never been as popular as it is today with over

200,000 residents and thousands more flocking to the town to

shop, explore and more.

What to do?

Peterborough Cathedral has to be at the top of your to do list

when visiting the city. The cathedral is open to the public daily and

welcomes visitors to join in Morning Prayer and evensong if you

so wish. The cathedral dates back to 655AD when it was founded

as a monastic community. It is also the burial place of two queens,

Katharine of Aragon and Mary, Queen of Scots. Tours are available

every day which can be booked onsite or online before your visit.

There are a number of events throughout the year, including the

Peterborough City Christmas Market from Saturday 16 November

to Saturday 28 December.

Railworld Wildlife Haven is home to an impressive and detailed

railway model design with several tracks, derailed carriages

and working examples. Railworld is also home to The Haven, a

picturesque landscape home to over 200 species of flora and

fauna as well as a tranquil waterfall and local wildlife.

If the weather is dreary and damp and you want to go out but

stay in, pop into Queensgate Shopping Centre; full of high street

stores, popular brands and places to eat and drink. If you have

nothing planned for your evening why not book tickets to see a

show at The Key Theatre? The bill this December includes ‘The

Nutcracker’, a perfect wintery watch, and various comics just

waiting to make you laugh out loud.

Where to eat?

You will be spoilt for choice for eateries in and around

Peterborough, the town offers Italian, Mexican, Thai, hearty English

cuisine, Chinese, good old fish and chips, sandwich shops, delis,

café’s and plenty of stops for breakfast and afternoon tea.

Breakfast

Located outside the city centre, The Granary at Willowbrook Farm

offers homely breakfasts using only produce from the farm itself.

Walkers and cyclists are very welcome as the farm sits on some

very popular scenic routes. If you visit the farm shop make sure

to stock up for the day with fresh pork pies, homemade cakes

and sandwiches. Keen fishermen? The Granary also has its own

stocked carp lake on which you are welcome to fish but pre-book

in advance.

Lunch

If you’re after a proper pub lunch, head out of the city and visit

The Golden Pheasant offering a traditional British menu including

homemade soup, steak and ale pie, steaks, fish and a selection of

warming vegetarian options to set you up for the afternoon. The

pub also offers a varied selection of desserts including a seasonal

hot fruit crumble perfect for a cold day.

Dinner

Fancy something different for dinner? You’ve been out in the

cold all day exploring the area then you’ll be in need of a hot,

comforting meal. Try Tavan Restaurant offering modern Moroccan

and Turkish cuisine full of eastern promise and delicious flavours

to warm you through. Tagines are perfect for wintery days, a mix of

vegetables and spices and meat if desired.
