12 • NEWS BRIEFS The Mountain Times • June 5-11, 2019 Police cadet arrested for sexual assault Following a three-day trial that concluded on May 30, a Rutland jury convicted Kyle Lenher, age 26, of sexual assault. At trial, the state proved that just after midnight, on August 14, 2016, Lenher compelled a friend of his from high school to engage in sexual intercourse. Earlier in the evening, the two had met up for drinks at various bars in the Rutland area. Eventually, Lenher became intoxicated and the woman offered to drive him home to his place in Brandon, Vermont. At his apartment, Lenher took the keys of the vehicle and persuaded the woman to come inside his apartment. Inside, Lenher ignored her protests and forcibly escorted her to his bedroom where he sexually assaulted her. Minutes later, the woman called for assistance from her friends while walking down Route 7 after fleeing the apartment and Lenher. At the time of the offense, Lenher was a cadet at the Vermont Police Academy. The case is now set for sentencing on September 17, 2019. Lenher faces up to life imprisonment. Deputy State’s Attorney Travis Weaver tried the case for the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s Office. DSA Weaver indicated, “The state greatly appreciates the time of the jury as well as the bravery and fortitude of the young victim in this case. It is not easy to come forward after being the victim of a sexual assault and we greatly admire her courage. While many people think of sexual assault as a crime perpetrated by strangers, the experience of this office is that many assaults are perpetrated by people known and trusted by the victim. Police said a Danby woman became violent when police arrested her for an abuse prevention order. Immediately after being read the abuse prevention order, Tiffany Covey, 38, became disorderly and intentionally violated multiple aspects of the order in the presence of troopers. As Covey was being taken into custody, she actively resisted arrest. While Police arrest Danby woman being escorted out of the residence Covey kicked belongings that did not belong to her. Covey continued kick the door of a State Police cruiser while being placed in the back seat. Covey was transported to the Vermont State Police Barracks in Rutland Town for processing. Covey was later issued a citation of appear at Vermont Superior Court, Criminal Division on May 24 at 12:30 p.m. Police arrest man for crashing while driving under the influence Police said a Rutland man crashed while under the influence of drugs May 30. Police said Brian Hathaway Sr., 55, drove off the roadway striking a tree. Troopers arrived and Hathaway was not responsive. Hathaway was transported to the Rutland Regional Medical Center. Investigation revealed Hathaway had been under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. Troopers processed Hathaway for driving under the influence of drugs. Hathaway was released on a citation to appear at the Rutland Superior Court Criminal Division at a later date and time. Killington man arrested for marijuana, cocaine, LSD possession The Killington Police Department 28 marijuana plants, multiple bags of cocaine, a small amount of LSD and several vials of suspected Butane Hash Oil during a search warrant at 697 East Mountain Road on May 31. The tenant Nicholas Roucoulet, 26, was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, marijuana and LSD. In addition, police seized over 150 bags of pre-packaged marijuana edibles, each containing 300 mg of THC, according to the packaging label. The investigation revealed that the edibles had been shipped to Roucoulet from California. Roucoulet was transported to the Vermont State Police Barracks where he was processed and released with a citation. Roucoulet is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court in Rutland on July 15, 2019. The Rutland County State’s Attorney’s office is prosecuting Roucoulet. This investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Killington Police Department.
