Saturday, June 8, 11 a.m.—KILLINGTON—The Foundry at Summit Pond will be hosting the annual Huck Finn Catfish Derby on June 8 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Families and community members will enjoy a day on the pond casting out lines and catching some prize fish. All of the proceeds from the Huck Finn Catfish Derby will benefit the Killington Elementary School organization, PEAKS. Registration is only $5 day-of and includes a ready-to-use fishing pole. Participants will test their luck by casting their primitive Huck Finn style fishing poles with hopes of catching the largest fish in Killington! The largest catch of the day will receive a pair of tickets to a Red Sox game in Boston. Trophies will be awarded to all of the winners. A Vermont-style barbecue with burgers and hot dogs will be available for purchase at the event. Lawn games and family fun will be offered all day long! RRMC offers off-season conditioning program for student athletes Wednesday, June 12, 6 p.m.—RUT- LAND—During the off season, it is still important for school athletes to maintain some form of conditioning program to reduce the risk of early season injuries and to keep their competitive edge. Rutland Regional Medical Center will be offering a free program. Off Season Conditioning for the High School Athlete, Wednesday, June 12, 6-7:30 p.m. in the CVPS/ Leahy Community Health Education Center in Conference Room B. This program, presented by Tyler White, AT; Matt Howland, AT; and Dominick Maniery, AT from Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic, targets student athletes in grades 7-12, coaches, and parents. It will focus on off season strength and conditioning principals in preparation for the upcoming fall sports season. Grace Coolidge Musicale series begins June 9 Sunday, June 9, 4 p.m.—PLYMOUTH NOTCH—The President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site welcomes two exceptional regional musicians for a Grace Coolidge Musicale on Sunday, June 9. Pianist Abigail Charbeneau and cellist Kate Jensik will perform in the Coolidge Museum & Education Center at 4 p.m. The 45-minute concert is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. Charbeneau and Jensik will present the Sonata in E minor by Johannes Brahms. The piano and cello are equal partners in this three-movement sonata that displays many of the composer’s signature styles including THE PIANO AND CELLO ARE EQUAL PARTNERS IN THIS THREE-MOVEMENT SONATA. hemiola, dynamic octave passages, and sumptuous lyricism. The program also includes Vivaldi’s fourth Sonata in B flat major, Fauré’s Elegie, Op. 24, and a new work by New Hampshire composer Nicholas White, which is based on the Gregorian chant “Adoro te devote.” This is the first concert of the 2019 Grace Coolidge Musicales, a series organized by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation and generously sponsored by the Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation. Tuesday, June 11, 7:30 a.m.—CASTLETON—Join Slate Valley Trails (SVT) and the Rutland County Audubon Society for weekly slow-paced (approximately 3 miles, 3-3.5 hours) hikes in Poultney, Castleton, Middletown Springs, and Wells. All are welcome. No worries for those that can’t identify many birds – there will be many friendly and accomplished birders in the group who will happily share their knowledge with all. Bring water, binoculars, cameras, and any field guides that may be available. For those that use insect repellant, bring that, too. The first hike was held June 4 on the Endless Brook Trails. The second hike is Tuesday, June 11, at the SVT Castleton University trails. Meet at the D&H trail crossing on South Street in Castleton at 7:30 a.m. The parking lot is on east side of South Street, south of the crossing. It will be easy to moderate terrain. The third hike will take place Tuesday, June 18, on the SVT Poultney River and Rail trail. Meet at the D&H Trail crossing on Main Street, Poultney, at 7:30 a.m., for an easy terrain walk alsting about 3.5 hours. Soovin Kim, Gloria Chien to open RCMS 25th anniversary concert season Saturday, June 8, 4 p.m.—ROCHESTER—The Rochester Chamber Music Society opens its 25th summer series on Saturday, June 8 at 4 p.m. at the Rochester Federated Church, with violinist Soovin Kim and pianist Gloria Chien. Kim has a long association with the RCMS and first performed on the series in 1999. Audiences were elated when he brought his newly formed Johannes Quartet as a regular fixture to the series. The Saturday afternoon concert offers a rare opportunity to hear these masterful performers in an intimate chamber setting. Programming will include works by Ravel, Copland and Szymanowski. Violinist Soovin Kim is increasingly sought after for the character, nuance, and excitement of his performances as concerto soloist, chamber musician and recitalist, both in the U.S. and abroad. Particularly known for his breadth of repertoire, Kim typically takes on everything from Bach to Paganini to the big romantic concertos to new commissions within a single season. He maintains a close relationship with the Marlboro Music Festival and is the founding Artistic Director of the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival. In 2014 he joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory. Taiwanese-born pianist Gloria Chien has one of the most diverse musical lives as a noted performer, concert presenter, and educator. She was selected by the Boston Globe as one of its Superior Pianists of the year. She made her orchestral debut at the age of 16 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2009 she launched String Theory, a chamber music series at Hunter Museum of American Art in downtown Chattanooga. In 2017, she joined her husband, violinist Soovin Kim, as co-artisitc director of the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington. A Steinway Artist, she holds the position of artist-in-residence at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Rochester Federated Church is located at 15 N. Main St., Rochester.
