Of course, one may argue that it is difficult to define “student” and that there are also
many similar situations (with master classes and private teaching), making it difficult to
draw the line and also to verify every situation. But at least, it will already help to have a
rule that eliminates the most obvious cases. And it will definitely be good for the image of
the competition.
The following table gives a few examples of competitions where students of jury
members are not allowed to take part:

*: mostly, a time period is added, during which no official teaching relationship may have taken
place, e.g. “not during the past two years before the start of the competition”. As can be seen, a few
competitions entirely rule out any teaching relation, at present or in the past.
**: at the Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn, current students of jury members may not
apply and neither those, who have been pupils of a jury member for at least one year during the four
years preceding the competition.
NB: occasional attendance of Master Classes is usually allowed.
The Arcangelo Speranza Competition in Taranto (Italy) also has such a rule, but phrases it
slightly differently: “a person may not be on the jury if one of his students is among the
participants”, thus ruling out a potential jury member rather than participants.
At the Isidor Bajic Competition in Novi Sad, pianists are barred from participation when
they had any sort of pedagogical contact with more than three members of the jury.
NB: the above table is only indicative and not exhaustive. Also other competitions have
thought about this. Rules and conditions may also change.
