Meeting to address Hoon Hay crime

CRIME AND safety concerns in
Hoon Hay will be discussed at a
community meeting.

Berney, said he has seen
residents
reporting
more crime,
particularly
car break-ins
recently.

he is not
sure which
crimes have happened most
often in Hoon Hay, but thefts
from vehicles, burglaries,
neighbourhood disputes and
anti-social driving (boy racing)
have been happening the most
frequently across Christchurch.
Concerned residents, police
and neighbourhood support
representatives have been invited
to attend the meeting, organised
by Wigram MP Megan Woods.
It has been scheduled for
Thursday at 6pm at the Hoon
Hay Community Centre.

it has increased. However, he
said it is important to meet with
the community to encourage
people to report crime to give
police a more accurate picture
of this.
“Not reporting crime for me,
is actually good because it keeps
crime down, but it’s bad in the
respect of we don’t actually know
what the true picture is so we
can’t commit more resourcing to
an area if we don’t know,” said
Senior Sergeant Appley.
Said Mr Berney: “There are
pockets where I think the crime
rate has gone up a wee bit,” said
Mr Berney.
Senior Sergeant Appley said

for police would be “that they

what the police are doing in their

discover everything that we
need to know about that area
and thirdly, that we might go
on to look for solutions that will
resolve the issues raised, which
also might include community
solutions, not just police
solutions.”

NEW MENZSHED BUILDING
The St Martins Community
MenzShed has received a
donated classroom building
from Rangiora that will be
relocated to 43 St Martins
Rd. It will be a 60 sq m space
for men to work on wood
and metalwork projects. The
original smaller MenzShed
building will be dedicated to
electronics. The group has 50
members who want to assist
with community projects. The
building installation requires
consents, repairs and utility
connections before it can
become operational.
CAR PARK CONSTRUCTION
The construction of a car park
with pavement and fencing for
Halswell Domain on Edward
Stafford Ave is set to begin this
month and should be completed
by late January.
HOCKEY GRANT
A grant of $1500 has been
given to Southern United
Hockey Club towards the
cost of its development and
equipment project. The funds
came from the Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board’s
Discretionary Response Fund.
This amount was less than the
$3628 the club requested.
